How Did Matt Kindt, David Lapham, and BAD IDEA Make a Comic Book Magically Appear in Stores Overnight?

THE HERO TRADE #1 – In Stores Now (Even If They Don’t Know It Yet)

David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear, David Blaine stood way up high on a pole for a good long while, and, now, Bad Idea has bested them all with an unthinkable feat that defies both logic and space-time: by making a brand-new, never-before-seen comic book by writer Matt Kindt and artist David Lapham materialize overnight in comic shops around the world.

That comic is THE HERO TRADE #1. (gasps)

But more on that in a moment.

Look, back when we told you that The Button – the quasi-supernatural, yet somehow still micro-managing entity currently calling the shots at Bad Idea – had seized control of our publishing plan earlier this year, we made it clear that it wasn't playing around. It demanded a billion clicks and told us to build it a website to collect them – or else we could kiss Bad Idea's sweet little dream of becoming an unruly and experimental comic book publisher goodbye.

The Button has spent the better part of the summer making good on its threats by racking up those clicks – hundreds of millions of them – and releasing a plethora of new art from a bunch of upcoming Bad Idea series without so much as a please or a thank you. To say nothing of feats like disappearing Bad Idea staff, interrogating our creators, and (checks notes) dying and coming back to life whenever it got bored. Honestly, it's been pretty amazing to watch. But even we couldn't have expected this.

So here's the sauce, jack: To certify 800 million clicks clicked – and with the much-vaunted billion just around the corner – The Button has put forward the most awesome display of its considerable powers yet by executing the single greatest magic trick in the history of comics. Yes, magic is real, and, yes, Bad Idea knows how to use it. Obviously.

Here's where THE HERO TRADE #1 comes in: This is a secret comic – secretly written by the New York Times best-selling creator of MIND MGMT, secretly drawn by the Eisner Award-winning creator of STRAY BULLETS, secretly published by an omnipotent button that also happens to have great taste in comics – and magically teleported into Bad Idea's network of destination stores. (leans in) A special, limited promo release now available at participating comic shops. (cups hand to ear). Your very first taste of Bad Idea. (whispers) And it tastes pretty damn good.

Don't believe us? We know what you're thinking. "I'm smart, I get all my news off of Facebook, and this is surely some kind of joke." Right, so pick up the phone and call any one of Bad Idea's wave one destination stores. We promise: THE HERO TRADE #1 is there right now...even if they don't know it yet.

Do it. We'll wait.

***

Okay, now that we have established how really real this is, you naturally want to see more. Here's a tiny taste of THE HERO TRADE #1 – guaranteed to be the only comic that still has that fresh teleportation smell:
Right? Right.

And if you think this is impressive...just wait until we hit a billion.

Yours truly,
Bad Idea

PS – Oh no, don’t leave yet, we forgot something important! Much like an ancient cursed amulet, there are three secrets that we have yet to reveal about THE HERO TRADE #1. We will do so in due time on Bad Idea’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds…so make sure you are paying very, very close attention when the times comes:
  1. WOW, THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THAT EASY, HUH? THE BUTTON WILL REVEAL THE THREE SECRETS WHEN IT'S GOOD AND READY. WE MIGHT EVEN HOLD THEM LONGER NOW THAT YOU TRIED TO PEEK. HOW DO YOU LIVE WITH YOURSELF?
  2. SERIOUSLY, JUST BECAUSE YOU OWN A COPY OF V FOR VENDETTA, THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU A MEMBER OF ANONYMOUS. PUT DOWN THE PALMPILOT AND GIVE IT UP ALREADY.
  3. LOOK, THE BLACK TEXT WAS LITERALLY THE FIRST THING WE KNEW TO FIX. AND, YET, HERE WE ARE -- ON BULLET POINT NUMBER THREE. THIS IS EMBARRASSING FOR US AND FOR YOU. WELL, MOSTLY FOR YOU.

Batman/Catwoman Begins on December 1!

Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle’s 80-Year Romance Continues
in ‘Batman/Catwoman’ by Tom King, Clay Mann and Tomeu Morey…
…and Phantasm Debuts in Batman/Catwoman #1 on December 1!
Picture
Gotham City. Today. Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle have rekindled their long-running, on-again, off-again relationship. Believing all obstacles are removed from their path, they once again begin operating as a duo in their secret lives: Batman and Catwoman working together to fight crime. In Batman/Catwoman, a crime story told across three separate timelines, Tom King, Clay Mann and Tomeu Morey return to the romantic saga of Batman and Catwoman, continuing the story they began in the pages of Batman!
Picture
There’s the past, when The Bat and The Cat first fell in love. Did they meet on the street? Or was it on a boat? Rooftops, ramparts and gargoyles, and over 80 years of fans that have read their comics, are their only witnesses.
Picture
There’s the distant future, where after a long and happy marriage Bruce Wayne has passed away. Selina Kyle decides to settle an old score without having to worry about the Batman objecting. Catwoman is serving a very cold dish: Revenge.
Picture
And in the present, Bruce and Selina’s union is threatened by the arrival of one of Batman’s past flings, Andrea Beaumont, a.k.a. Phantasm. Beaumont’s return calls into question how each character chooses to operate in their costumed, and personal, lives, and any move by Phantasm could change the fate of Bruce and Selina’s future.
Picture
The only other person besides Bruce and Selina to have been along for the whole ride has been the Joker, and what he did in the past is going to have direct consequences on today and tomorrow. Batman’s greatest foe will intervene any time Batman and Catwoman try to take steps towards peace—he already robbed fans of a Bat/Cat wedding celebration! Any change in the Caped Crusader’s life will be matched with the chaos of the Clown Prince of Crime…
Picture
…and the Joker’s not leaving any witnesses. Not even a gargoyle. Will Selina make good on her final kill?

Batman/Catwoman, by Tom King, Clay Mann, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles, edited by Jamie S. Rich and Brittany Holzherr, will launch a 12-issue run on December 1, 2020, with a cover by Mann and Morey and a variant cover by Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair. New issues will ship monthly with a skip month planned for a Batman/Catwoman Special in June 2021, and the series will carry DC’s Black Label content descriptor, indicating content appropriate for readers ages 17+.

STUDENT AMBASSADOR from Iron Circus Comics

As a true-blue middle grade fan I have to mention here, up top, how deeply satisfying it is to find a new non-fantasy kids’ graphic novel with a driving, action-packed narrative full of danger and derring-do. And although that’s just the surface pleasure of STUDENT AMBASSADOR from Iron Circus Comics, I have to say it’s the bit that has stayed with me the longest after blowing through it in one short sitting; lasting images of two kids adventuring in a distant part of the globe against huge odds with no magic or dragons to help them out.

But like I said, that’s just the start of this window into the world of author and polymath Ryan Estrada (co-author of BANNED BOOK CLUB). Ryan's not only a former student ambassador himself but an intrepid globe-trotter who has seen most of the locales in these pages up close himself. He has taken the (admittedly boring) job of student ambassadorship and turned it into what kids wish it really is: tackling geopolitical problems with Dan Brown-style puzzles and chases!

The story opens with Student Ambassador Joseph Bazan who has won a meeting with the President of the United States. While goofing around in the Oval Office together, Joseph solves a thorny situation with the Canadian Prime Minister and the prez hits upon an idea. This kid has some skills, and the boy king of fictional Rhutar -- an authoritarian regime isolated from the rest of the modern world -- might open up if they send someone his own age to talk it out. Joseph now has a real diplomatic mission, and things are about to get real dicey! An obsessively researched adventure of political intrigue for kids awaits, but a touching story of budding friendship is tucked in there, as well, hitting on some essential truths we could all learn from no matter what age.

4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK movie adaptation on the way!

9/4/2020

Picture
As reported today on Deadline, PICTURESTART won a multi-studio bidding war for adaptation rights to 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK, the beloved coming-of-age heist comic book by writer Matthew Rosenberg (Uncanny X-Men, Punisher, We Can Never Go Home, Twelve Reasons To Die, upcoming What's The Furthest Place From Here?) and artist Tyler Boss (upcoming What's The Furthest Place From Here, upcoming Dead Dog's Bite).

The feature film adaptation will be written by Matthew Robinson (upcoming Live Die Repeat And Repeat, Dora And The City Of Gold).

PICTURESTART is developing, producing, and co-financing the feature project, with Jessica Switch and Royce Reeves Darby overseeing for the studio.

Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss will co-produce, with Black Mask's Matt Pizzolo producing.

After the death of her mother, Paige’s father has stepped up and become a more responsible parent. So when a group of criminals show up at their door demanding that Paige’s father join them for one last job, she's faced with a decision: let her newly reformed father dip back into his criminal ways, or enlist her three 12-year-old best friends to do the job first. 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK is a darkly comedic tale steeped in 90s nostalgia about four burgeoning child criminals and their elaborate plans.

PICTURESTART, which focuses on “discovery of voice” content and storytelling, is the media company founded by producer and former studio executive Erik Feig. Although just a year old, PICTURESTART already has a rich and diverse slate of film projects ranging from UNPREGNANT, a road-trip comedy slated for release on HBO Max in the fall of 2020, to YASUKE, starring Chadwick Boseman; SUMMER LOVIN’, a prequel of GREASE for Paramount; and NARUTO and BORDERLANDS with Lionsgate as well as near a dozen scripted series set with multiple outlets.

Winner Announced. Kickstarter 3oz Canbot Series 1 Design Competition Selects New Artist.

Clutter's Official 3oz Canbot Kickstarter  Competition Selects New Artist Design by New York based artist, ZeroProductivity. Our panel of industry experts have chosen the winner of the 3oz Canbot Blindbox Series One Design Competition. Congratulations to design "Can of Coo'" by ZeroProductivity.

This design will be created as the final Canbot in the Series 1 Blindbox line up, alongside the internationally renowned roster of artists!
Picture
Zero Productivity is a New York based artist living in the Brooklyn area. The NY city streets have been home to zero for many years and is often a place of inspiration for his art work including his signature character "PJ the Pigeon," which is seen transformed onto the Canbot for his design.
A nod to street art, the city of Brooklyn and to his own journey as an artist, Can of Coo' features a three pointed crown, three wing feathers, three tail feathers and three swipes to make up the lighting bolt on his chest presenting a personal pattern to the artists story and the number three. Can of Coo' also incorporates a splatter of bird poop on the top to remind himself (and encourage others) that there will always be people looking down on your ideas, but it doesn't mean you aren't a winner.

Catch this little bird and all the other Canbot designs in the new 3oz Canbot Blinbox Series as part of Clutter's official Kickstarter by clicking the link below!

The Canbot: The Canbot design stands as a symbol for the artistic process that all artists share in their careers. Picking up a paint can, a brush or a spray can – this piece is a dedication to the tortured artist and the ongoing entanglement of creation and the discarded object of the process.
