Archie Comics Insider - July 2018
Your New #1 Source for Archie Comics News
Hey there, Archie Comics fans! Welcome to the Archie Comics Insider, a brand-new feature that brings the latest and great Archie Comics news directly to you, our dedicated readers and friends.

As this feature grows, we'll be featuring fan art, answering reader questions, and even debuting exclusive video content. For now, we're kicking off the first Archie Comics Insider with a special Q&A with Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura to discuss everything Archie!
Q&A with Archie Comics Co-President Alex SeguraWe sat down with Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura to answer some of your burning questions about our comics and to get the scoop on the neat stuff coming down the pipeline at Archie HQ.

There's also a bunch of really cool artwork being seen here for the very first time from some of our exciting upcoming projects, so keep reading to get the latest news on ARCHIE 700, ARCHIE 1941, VAMPIRONICA, and more!
ARCHIE #700ArchieComics.com: We know that the ARCHIE series will be returning in November with a special issue #700 and that new writer Nick Spencer and artist Marguerite Sauvage will be telling the stories of Archie and the gang - what else can you share about the title? What should fans who have been reading ARCHIE for the past few years expect to see in the new series?

Alex Segura: I think what fans will see is a bit of a tonal shift, but the core essence of the characters will still be there. This isn't a reboot. We're all fans of what Mark and the amazing ARCHIE artists have built over the last 32 issues. That includes Nick and Marguerite. I think what you'll see is a change of pace and a little zooming out to include some core Archie characters that maybe haven't popped up before.

We'll also see the drama level increase a bit, but not to the point where the humor and familiar character beats go away. It's a new season, basically, and we'll see what new problems and conflicts Nick introduces to the kids of Riverdale High. It also makes for a great, fresh jumping on point for fans of the RIVERDALE show or any comic readers who may have drifted away from the series.

We're also putting a brand-spankin' new ARCHIE logo on the book starting with #700, and you can get a first look at it right here.

Alex Segura: Mark's not going anywhere, that's for sure. From what I've seen, peeking over editor (and fellow co-president) Mike Pellerito's shoulder, has looked absolutely stunning. But why not hear it from him directly? Mike?

"This is the sweeping epic Archie fans have been looking forward to for years," said Archie Comics Co-President and ARCHIE 1941 editor Mike Pellerito."ARCHIE 1941 finds Archie and the gang set against the dramatic back drop of WWII, taking things back to the year they were created to tell a story for the ages. Hats off to Mark, Brian, Pete, Kelly and Jack - they've created a masterpiece."

Archie Comics Co-President/Editor-in-Chief Victor Gorelick, who is also editing the title with Mike, added, “I think 1941 is one of the best books Archie’s ever done. Maybe even THE best.”

Alex Segura: Thanks, Mike and Victor! We've also got a few cool pages to show you from #2. That Peter Krause is not messing around. Masterful!

They've met KISS, jammed with the Ramones and Blondie, and even battled the Predator! The newest crossover features Archie and company meeting the Adam West-era Batman and Robin. What makes the combination of these two franchises so perfect and how has the response been so far from fans and retailers to the ARCHIE MEETS BATMAN '66 mini-series?

Alex Segura: This isn't another run-of-the-mill crossover - it's two iconic properties coming together for the first time. Everyone loves Batman, and they especially love the Adam West 60s iteration, which has the same pop, fun sensibility as Classic Archie. It made perfect sense once we thought of it and we're so happy with the work that Jeff Parker, Michael Moreci, DanParent, J Bone and the entire team are producing. It also seems like the fans are too as issue #1 is basically sold out at the distributor level. Here's a first look at the reprint cover for #1, which will be available soon in limited quantities.

VAMPIRONICA

ArchieComics.com: Fans of the darker side of Archie Comics have been loving the VAMPIRONICA series by Greg & Meg Smallwood, which features Veronica Lodge as a kick-ass vampire. The third issue has seen some delays - can you share any info on the status of issue #3 and when we can expect to see it in stores?

Alex Segura: Yes. We know #3 is egregiously late and we're taking steps to fix that. Greg Smallwood is working hard on finishing the art - here are a few pages! - and we're bringing in the esteemed Greg Scott to close out the first arc of the series. Greg Scott is a pro, and super-talented. Many Archie readers will remember his work from THE BLACK HOOD, and we've got some really haunting character designs that'll give you a taste of what his Vampironica will look like. Thanks to the fans and retailers for their support and patience with this book. We're excited to have more great of the series out and in your hands very soon.

VAMPIRONICA #3 in-progress art by Greg SmallwoodRIVERDALEArchieComics.com: The RIVERDALE tie-in comic book series has been telling new stories set in between episodes of the hit CW show and is a treat for fans of the comics and the show. What's the status of this series and when can fans expect to see more Riverdale stories in print?
Picture
Alex Segura: We're closing out this volume of the RIVERDALE comic with #12, but we'll return with a new series closer to the launch of season three of the show, which will be a lot of fun and very much in the same vein as the TV show, which is exactly what you want from this kind of comic, right? In the meantime, eagle-eye Archie fans know that we've struck a publishing deal with the wonderful folks at Scholastic to create prose novels and other books in the Riverdale world, so I'd suggest they pick up THE OFFICIAL RIVERDALE STUDENT HANDBOOK on August 28th and RIVERDALE: THE DAY BEFORE - THE PREQUEL NOVEL, arriving later this year.

BOOM! Studios Unveils FIREFLY #1 Variant Cover By J.G. Jones

#MalCrushMonday Kicks Off Weekly Five Part Spotlight on The November 2018 Return of Joss Whedon’s Sci-Fi Epic

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 30, 2018) –  BOOM! Studios today announced #MalCrushMonday, a weekly five part spotlight on the debut of FIREFLY #1 in November 2018, bringing the iconic worldwide pop culture phenomenon back to comic books, original graphic novels and more in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.

This spotlight on FIREFLY #1 begins with the reveal of a special variant cover by superstar artist J.G. Jones (Final Crisis) spotlighting the iconic crew of the spaceship Serenity as the series reveals the secret Firefly history that fans have demanded for years! Now, the definitive story of the Unification War — the intergalactic civil war that divided friend and family alike — is told at last by New York Times best-selling writer Greg Pak (World War Hulk, Mech Cadet Yu) and artist Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd), along with series creator & story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s The Avengers and more).

“Firefly has some of the best fans in the world and so we knew that meant recruiting some of the best artists on the planet to deliver stunning covers to this new series,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “J.G. Jones has brought to life some of the biggest heroes on the planet through his work in comics - but none as shiny as the crew of the Serenity”

Created by Whedon and set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war, FIREFLY centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport spaceship that doesn't have a planet to call home. Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the totalitarian governed Alliance, will undertake any job — legal or not — to stay afloat and keep his crew fed. Thrust together by necessity but staying together out of loyalty, these disparate men and women are seeking adventure and the good life, but face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as avoiding capture by the Alliance, and evading the dangers you find on the fringes of the universe.

Mal thought he could outrun his past, but when a simple heist goes wrong, he’s forced to confront it in the form of the Unificators, mercenaries deputized to hunt down war criminals...and they’ve got Mal and Zoe at the top of their list! War can make villains of even the best men, and Mal’s quest for redemption will put him at odds with his own crew, forcing him to make a choice: fix the past or fight for the future.

FIREFLY #1 is available exclusively in comic shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) on November 14, 2018 with a main cover by superstar Lee Garbett (Skyward), along with variant covers by Jock (Batman), Bill Sienkiewicz (Daredevil), Joe Quinones (America) and more.

Arriving in stores the same day, FIREFLY: LEGACY EDITION BOOK ONE collects previously released Serenity comics for the first time under one cover in a new value-priced format as Mal and the crew ride again in these official sequels to the critically acclaimed Firefly television series and Serenity film.

FIREFLY is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, Abbott, Victor LaValle’s Destroyer, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus.

Sistah Shark Is Coming Back For A Bite~ Kailua, Honolulu County, Hawaii ~ July 20, 2018

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water Christopher Caravalho brought the creative team of Sistah Shark #1 back together for one more exciting adventure with Hawaii's First Local Girl Superhero.

Now Live on Kickstarter ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/247175080/sistah-shark-2 ) is the Sistah Shark #2 , “Deepest Fear” Campaign.

If you love Hawaii, Shark fights, and Octopusninjas you will love this comic!

In 2014 Christopher Caravalho created a team of superhero team called the Aumakua Guardians of Hawaii with a roster of characters that reflected the many different ethnicities of our island home.

Among the heroes such as Royal Hawaiian Guard, The Phantom Surfer, and Geckoman, one hero quickly became a fan favorite. Her name was Sistah Shark!

Caravalho wanted a chance to highlight the characters as indviduals so he decided to create solo stories of two of his favorite characters of the Aumakua series. He invested his time and energy into creating another comic book title called MANA DOUBLE FEATURE.

In this book Caravalho wrote a story entitled “Deadly Waters”  It tells of the origin of a small beach town local girl named Lani Castillo. As a baby she was rescued by a man at the end of his ropes who in turn became her father and devoted his life in giving her a normal upbringing. As normal as raising a girl who goes full 'Sharknado' at the drop of blood.

In SISTAH SHARK #1 we dove head first into Lani's life as she battled gangsters, a monk seal shifter and the Yakuzas greatest weapon TAKONINJA!

SISTAH SHARK #2 continues where Issue #1 ended as Lani Castillo has to get her head on straight as she is overwhelmed with enemies and a dark deadly secret.

As Caravalho says "Developing strong female characters is so important to me. I firmly believe Females are not tight spandex and eye candy and I think i was able to reflect that with Sistah Sharks touching and relatable origin story. I was so excited to discover that a lot of island girls fell in love with the character which gave me the motivation to co- write and and with the help of family, firends and FINatics publish Sistah Shark #1 “The Hunter and the Hunted”."

The core team involved in the Sistah Shark Comics are:
Kiko Galpin-Writer
Eliseu Gouviea- Artist
Claudia Palescandolo/ Dijjo Lima- Colorists
Kel Nuttall- Letterer

Please Share and Support.

Born Wild, Media Participations Group
and Titan Comics to go Under

(July 20, 2018, San Diego Comic Con) Graphic novel “Under,” about mutated creatures lurking in the sewers under a major US metropolis, is coming to the big-screen, with Franco-Belgian comics powerhouse Media Participations Group, Titan Comics, and U.K. producer Born Wild bringing the project to life.

“Under” was created by prolific French writer Christophe Bec and his regular illustrator and collaborator Stefano Rafael. It is published by Le Lombard, which sits within Media Participations Group’s stable of comic book publishers alongside the likes of Dargaud, and is represented by Mediatoon.

Set in the near future in the city’s vast sewer complex, which have become a war zone, complete with mutant spiders and crocodiles, disgraced former detective, Jericho, leads the subterranean police force attempting to preserve a semblance of order. Sandra Yeatman, a young female scientist, embeds herself with Jericho’s team, to his disdain, and they battle to stop the underwater carnage spreading above ground.

Anthony Alleyne, whose “Sunburn” recently played at the London Screenings, will adapt the action-sci-fi project with up and coming writer Brennig Hayden. Alleyne will also produce the movie through Born Wild. Laurent Duvault of Mediatoon, Kristian van der Heyden of Harald House and Annemiek van der Hell of Windmill Film are all confirmed co-producers. Raymond Van der Kaaij of Revolver is also on board as executive producer. The budget is Euro8 million.

“It’s exciting to collaborate with tireless and tenacious creatives like Alleyne,” Bec and Raffaele said. “Under is a story which is close to our hearts and it was his and Brennig's strong vision of blending the spirit of our original work with contemporary social elements that won us over. Many of our works together have been influenced by movies and the cinema, and to see ‘Under’ adapted on the big screen would show true appreciation.”

“Anthony is clear about what he wants to do with the property, which is to establish a powerful franchise we are proud to be part of,” Duvault added.

The comics launched in France in 2010, with English-language versions following late last year. The plan is to shoot the film in late 2019. Nick Landau, Owner of Titan Entertainment Group said ‘Under is highly relevant to the world we live in, and it’s really going to surprise people’. Titan officially announced the project, Thursday, at San Diego Comic-Con panel session for its English-language imprint Statix Press.

Mad Cave Studios is proud to announce our third original title, Knights of the Golden Sun, from the creative team of Mark London (Battlecats, Midnight Task Force) and Mauricio Villarreal. In order for the Archangels to overcome the darkness, they will need to discover their own humanity.

With gloriously detailed art, an intricately crafted story, and explosive action, Knights of the Golden Sun will take you on a mind-blowing journey through unexplored events of the past. Follow the Archangels on their quest to protect Providence and humanity from the wicked Fallen!

TITAN COMICS AND SQUARE ENIX ANNOUNCE LIFE IS STRANGE COMIC CREATIVE TEAM!
WRITER EMMA VIECELI AND ARTIST CLAUDIA LEONARDI!
(July 20, 2018, San Diego Comic Con) Titan Comics and SQUARE ENIX® are delighted to announce the creative team of the all-new comic book series set in the world of the acclaimed videogame series, LIFE IS STRANGE™.

The first issue of the four-part comic miniseries launches in November 2018.

Titan Comics’ LIFE IS STRANGE returns readers to Arcadia Bay in the company of fan-favorite characters Max Caulfield and Chloe Price, charting the shocking course of a possible future after one of the two endings of the game.

The first game in the series, LIFE IS STRANGE, which connects directly to this new comics series, follows the story of Max Caulfield, a senior majoring in photography who discovers that she can rewind time when trying to save her best friend Chloe Price. The pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber, and uncover a dark side to the life in Arcadia Bay. Meanwhile, Max quickly learns that changing the past can sometimes lead to a devastating future.

The multi-award winning LIFE IS STRANGE, is available on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation, XBOX, iOS, and is releasing on Android via the Google Play Store in July. THE AWESOME ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN SPIRIT™, a 100% free narrative experience demo that links to LIFE IS STRANGE 2, is available now on XBOX ONE, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC/Steam.  LIFE IS STRANGE 2 will release on September 27th for XBOX ONE, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC/Steam and is available for pre-order now

Titan’s new comic series is written by Emma Vieceli (Olivia Twist, Breaks, Doctor Who, Back to the Future) with interior art and covers by Claudia Leonardi of IHQ Studios, and colors by Andrea Izzo. The series will launch with a cover by superstar Manda Schank, with more to be revealed.

“Like so many players all over the world, I fell hard for Max and her story from the release of episode one, and every chapter brought more heartache, tears and emotional rollercoasters,” said Life Is Strange writer Emma Vieceli, “One of the wonders of the series is that every player may have taken Max and Chloe on a unique journey, and so distilling their possible futures into one mini-series is a huge thing. Importantly, as with the game, it must always be remembered that what we're creating here is one possibility out of many. I'm excited with the story we've opted for, and I hope readers will be too!”

LIFE IS STRANGE #1 will be available to order from the September Diamond Previews catalogue, listings for which go live August 22.

GO-BOTS Return in All-New Comic Book Series
IDW Celebrates the 35th Anniversary of Classic Toy Line
with a Sci-Fi Epic Written and Drawn by Tom Scioli

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 20, 2018) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce that Tom Scioli, the visionary creator that brought you Transformers vs. G.I. Joe, will unleash his imagination on the wonderful world of Go-Bots! Launching in October, Go-Bots will be the first story to feature classic toy and cartoon characters like Leader-1, Scooter, Turbo, and Cy-Kill’s Renegades in over three decades!

In the new five-issue series, the existence of Go-Bots on Earth has changed humans’ way of life. They chauffeur us around. They protect us from harm. They do the jobs that are too boring or dangerous for us. They fight our wars for us. They are friends for the lonely. The only thing they don’t do is dream for us… but that could change any day now. For a generation, Leader-1 and the Guardians have said that they were here to help us… but as they become more integrated into our society, the question must be asked: Are they here to replace us?

“This is a dream project – I’m writing, drawing, coloring, and hand-lettering this book. It’s a labor of love,” says Scioli. “When these characters were conceived of in the ’80s, the idea of robots with human personalities was science fiction. Now, it’s history. The world of living machines is here – we’re living it. The time is right for Go-Bots!”

“Avant-garde creator Tom Scioli has been pushing the comic book storytelling medium for nearly two decades now and his work on Go-Bots is yet another watershed moment in his career,” says IDW Associate Publisher David Hedgecock. “It is a testament to the strong collaboration between IDW Publishing and Hasbro, that projects like this can exist on licensed properties.”

For information on how to secure copies of the monthly Go-Bots comic book series, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Creator Bio:

Tom Scioli is a writer and artist who works primarily in the comic book/graphic novel art form. His solo works include American Barbarian, Satan's Soldier, Mystery Object, and Myth of 8-Opus. He is the co-author of the comic and graphic novel series Godland with Joe Casey, and the co-writer/artist of IDW’s Transformers vs. G.I. Joe.

Tales from Vader’s Castle Celebrates Spooky Stories in a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Campfire Ghost Stories Get a Star Wars Adventures Spin in Weekly October Event
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 18, 2018) – IDW Publishing invites readers of all ages to explore the creepiest corners of the Star Wars universe in Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle, a thrilling five-part comic book event with new issues hitting stands every Wednesday in October. Fan-favorites Cavan Scott and Derek Charm team up with an incredible roster of guest artists for this special miniseries, just in time for Halloween.

“I’ve always loved scary stories, and where better to tell them than the lair of Darth Vader himself?” says writer Cavan Scott. “Being asked to write any Star Warscharacter is a joy, but tackling the Dark Lord of the Sith? That’s a childhood dream… or should I say, a nightmare! Vader terrified me growing up, and I can’t wait to add to the legacy of Star Wars’ villain, providing frightening new scares for the next generation.”

The weekly series features beloved characters from throughout the galaxy, including Rebels stars Hera, Kanan, and Chopper; Obi-Wan Kenobi and Count Dooku; Han Solo and Chewbacca; and the Ewoks! What frights and scares await them in Darth Vader’s castle?

Artist Derek Charm says, “Since this is a spookier story about these characters stranded on this nightmarish planet, it’s been fun really pushing the horror aspect in the art. The shadows are heavier, the colors are harsher, and everything has this apocalyptic vibe… like things may not work out for our heroes!”

Eisner Award-winning artist Francesco Francavilla provides cover artwork for each Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle issue, while different renowned creators (Kelley Jones, Chris Fenoglio, Corin Howell, Robert Hack, and Charles Paul Wilson III) lend their distinctive styles to spooky tales over the course of the five weeks.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the creepy Cavan Scott, the frightening Francesco Francavilla, and an array of eerie artists into the creepiest corners of the Star Warsuniverse for Tales from Vader’s Castle,” says Michael Siglain, Creative Director of Publishing for Lucasfilm. “There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween than with these spooky stories from a galaxy far, far away.”

For information on how to secure copies of the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle comic book series, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

(July 20, 2018, San Diego Comic Con) Cult classic THE PRISONER has been captivating audiences and firing imaginations since it first aired in the UK in 1967 and in the US the following year. Now fans can go even deeper into The Village with this official graphic novel sequel set twenty years after the events of the iconic TV series.

Originally published in 1988, SHATTERED VISAGE tells the story of former secret agent Alice Drake, whose round-the-world solo voyage is interrupted when she is accidentally shipwrecked and washes up on the shores of The Village. There she encounters Number Six, finds out what has become of Number Two, and discovers the true purpose of The Village.

Titan Comics, a licensee of ITV Studios Global Entertainment, are delighted to release this long out-of-print classic with new material, including character sketches and notes from writer/artist Dean Motter . Fans can finally get their hands on the unmissable next chapter in THE PRISONER saga for the first time in years.

Writer/Artist Dean Motter says:

"When I was approached to do a series based on The Prisoner, I leapt at the chance. It was one of my favourite TV shows when it first aired … My thinking turned to doing it as a post-modernist fable - one that took place in the current era, but that would re-open the questions from the original saga.

However, doing the research was going to take more resources than I had – so I drafted my friend and colleague Mark Askwith to help me with that aspect of the project. It became a collaboration almost instantly. I am honoured to see it re-presented as part of Titan's ongoing celebration of The Prisoner's ongoing 50thanniversary."

SHATTERED VISAGE joins Titan’s line of titles based on THE PRISONER, which includes the previously unavailable masterpiece THE PRISONER ART EDITION, showcasing never-before-seen artwork from graphic novel legends Jack Kirby and Gil Kane – as well as THE PRISONER: THE UNCERTAINTY MACHINE, a brand new mini-series by writer Peter Milligan and artist Colin Lorimer.

SHATTERED VISAGE will be available to order through the Diamond PREVIEWS catalogue later this year.
