Apr. 30, 2020, (COTTAGE GROVE, OR) — With social distancing measures in place for large gatherings, GalaxyCon is extending beyond the confines of a comic con and taking immediate steps to connect celebrities and fans from the comforts of their own homes. 

GalaxyCon is launching a new business for virtual events online called GalaxyCon Live this weekend through www.galaxycon.com. This new venture creates an original approach for connecting celebrities and fans that represents a first for the comic con industry.


Here’s what people can expect from GalaxyCon Live:
  • Live Streaming Interviews with Celebrities
  • One-on-Group Video Chats with a Fan and a Group of Celebrities
  • One-on-One Video Chats with a Fan and One Celebrity
  • Personalized Autographs 
  • Personalized Video Recordings 

These virtual meet and greets make it possible for fans to engage with celebrities on a level that isn’t possible in person. During a comic con, fans have never had a chance to chat for two minutes with two or more celebrities at one time in a private setting. GalaxyCon Live will make this interaction possible, starting with their first virtual meet and greet on May 2nd, 2020.

“I woke up one day about five weeks ago and realized that, if large gatherings aren't possible for the foreseeable future, we had to get creative pretty quickly if we want to remain relevant,” said GalaxyCon President, Mike Broder.

While Broder was inventing a new business, the 
GalaxyCon team worked with celebrity and comic book guests to produce free, daily online programming for the public as a way to continue their mission of creating memorable fan experiences.
“We’ve been surprised to learn that fan interactions with celebrities are often not trivial," Broder said. “Celebrities have told us repeatedly that fans share stories of how the celebrities’ characters have helped them overcome trauma, PTSD, loss, and other challenges.”

GalaxyCon Live will carry on the tradition of creating experiences for all genres of nerdy fandoms including comics, anime, animation, cosplay, science fiction, wrestling, fantasy, and gaming.

In that spirit, the groundbreaking program from BOOM!   • Full Returnability Through August: BOOM! Studios will extend the industry’s best returnability program, the BOOM! WHITE CAT ENTERTAINMENT LAUNCHES WITH NEW KICKSTARTER FOR CHRIS MANCINI AND FERNANDO PINTO’S RISE OF THE KUNG FU DRAGON MASTER VOL. 1

LOS ANGELES, CA — White Cat Entertainment, with support from Starburns Industries Press—the publishing arm of the studio behind Rick and Morty—is releasing Rise of the Kung Fu Dragon Master, a 100-page graphic novel! Funded through a May-launching Kickstarter campaign, this inaugural project from White Cat Entertainment is the follow up to writer Chris Mancini and artist Fernando Pinto’s first graphic novel together, Long Ago and Far Away, which was released digitally in 2019 from Starburns Industries Press.

While the original goal for the whole book was not quite achieved at the end of 2019, the relaunched campaign has been retooled and broken up into two volumes. The new campaign adds a physical book and pinup artists at launch, and features a lower goal, lower reward tiers, and streamlined campaign.

Rise of the Kung Fu Dragon Master is a comedy/action/fantasy graphic novel about Rick, a small time crook in Los Angeles who becomes an unlikely hero in a mystical battle between good and evil that has been fought since the days of Ancient China. Fans of Big Trouble in Little China, Rumble in the Bronx, Shang-Chi, Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness, and even ’80s buddy comedies will find something to like here. Along with the action/comedy, the story explores the self-destruction a life of anger and violence can bring, and how to follow a new path that can lead to peace and balance. But, even so, the book features epic martial arts fights, fantastic creatures, and surly baristas.

“I love mixing genres, and I thought about how cool it would be to mix martial arts, fantasy and comedy in a modern way that also explores contemporary attitudes towards masculinity, violence, and our personal relationships,” creator/writer Chris Mancini said. “I wanted to tell a big, fun story, where you’re laughing one minute, thrilled by the action the next, and then surprised by a thoughtful character moment.”
In addition to being a stand-up comic and podcaster, Chris Mancini has also written, directed and produced on everything from soap operas to parenting books to horror films, which are all more closely related than you think. His feature films include Asylum from Lionsgate Films and Ear Buds: The Podcasting Documentary from Comedy Dynamics. His published works include Pacify Me: A Handbook for the Freaked Out New Dad from Simon and Schuster, The Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies from Morgan James, and Long Ago and Far Away, a graphic novel from Starburns Press and Studio, who are also developing it into a TV series.

Fernando Pinto is from Chile. He graduated the Kubert School in ’04 and has worked as a sequential artist ever since. Some of the other comics he’s worked on include Tales of the TMNT, Moon Lake vol. 2, Hack Slash, Monarchs, Eat Fighter, and his own books Warped! and GunPunch, among others.

The Rise of the Kung Fu Dragon Master Kickstarter launches May 1 and continues through May 31. Backers can score all sorts of cool digital and physical rewards, including the entire Starburns Industries Press digital library. Other rewards include getting drawn into the book, and custom art commissions. Since safety is also a concern, this is a NO-CONTACT project. From start to finish, the artists will all be working remotely, and all rewards will be no-contact. There are no tours, personal lunches, or shows as rewards. $8,000 goal. There is one stretch goal, and that’s . . . VOL. 2! So if the stretch goal of $15,000 is hit, everyone will get a graphic novel with both volumes included for the price of one.

The INSIDER ART: Female Comic Book Retailer Fund has been set up and is being administered by Jen King, owner of Space Cadet Collections, and previous organizer of The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The INSIDER ART project will be raising money for this fund in three key ways: 

1) the INSIDER ART digital comics anthology 
2) an INSIDER ART fabric
3) auctions of exclusive artwork, signed prints and various collectibles

INSIDER ART DIGITAL ANTHOLOGY
Chock-full of crafts, comics & cats, INSIDER ART is a digital anthology designed to entertain readers of all ages who are stuck indoors or just in search of new creative outlets. Set within the walls of eight different rooms in one peculiar house, eight editors were tasked to curate and edit comics, prose, games and how-to crafts. From recipes for comfort food and quarantine bread, to attic treasures and a brief history of Garage Rock, INSIDER ART is guaranteed to conquer the tedium of the great indoors. 

"We couldn’t think of a better way to acknowledge the female comic book retailers who are on the front lines every day, spreading the good word about our favorite medium. Over 50 female comic book creators have donated their time and mad skills to support female retailers who have lost incredible amounts of money due to the COVID-19 pandemic," says Shelly Bond, a 30-year veteran comic book editor (DC/Vertigo, Black Crown/IDW), who set the project in motion.

All-star contributors include Gail Simone, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Stephanie Hans, Lilah Sturges, Janet K. Lee, and Trina Robbins, exciting newcomers Lola the Illustrator, Myriam Bloom, Jessi Jordan, and Amanda Gonzalez, and fan-favorites Tini Howard, Chynna Clugston Flores, Magdalene Visaggio, Margaux Saltel, and Vita Ayala among others. Topics and themes include creativity during isolation, positivity, cli-fi (climate fiction), and empowerment as well as sheer fun and games. Readers of all ages can “pay what they want” for over 200 pages on Gumroad with a suggested donation of $9.99. The digital anthology will be available in June. 

FABRIC
In addition to the funds raised through the digital version of INSIDER ART, there will be two fabrics available in the coming months via Spoonflower; one featuring cat art by noted comic book professionals, and another by a host of young female artists. "Creative people have a need to share stories, ideas, projects, and the love of making things. INSIDER ART is a way for us to help each other, to make new things, tell new stories, give each other hope and support in a pretty scary time," says editor and writer Mariah McCourt (Angel, True Blood, Stitched). 

AUCTIONS
Texas retailer Jen King, owner of Space Cadet Collections and host of CBSN, her Comic Book Shopping Network FaceBook Channel, is not only the retailer in charge of administering INSIDER ART: The Female Comic Book Retailer Fund, she’s also running auctions, live on FaceBook and on eBay, to raise money.  Jen says: “I’m super proud of what Shelly Bond and the seven editors have achieved in such a short time, in assembling the talented creators that are giving from their heart and soul for this project. I am thrilled to be able to use my skills to help turn these unique donated items into money to help female comic store owners pay the bills during this difficult time.” 

Additional items available at the live auction include original art, exclusive signed art prints from Mark Buckingham, Becky Cloonan and Michael Allred among others, and various collectibles from personal archives. ImageNation, Winner of Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Grant Launches Virtual Sōl Cinema Cafe with Phoenix, Oregon

Harlem, N.Y., April 28, 2020 — ImageNation, the innovative Harlem-based business primarily dedicated to developing cinemas and audiences for independent films about the global Black experience is proud to announce new programs presented through its virtual cinema, www.SolCinemaCafe.com. On Wednesday, April 29, the group will launch “Lunch Break,” a talk series about cinema, culture, and community, followed by a two-week run of the indie film Phoenix, Oregon on May 1. 

ImageNation founder Moikgantsi Kgama and her partner Gregory Gates were in the midst of renovations to open the Sōl Cinema Cafe, a click and mortar business in New York City’s Central Harlem community, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought their plans to a halt. Designed to leverage both online and offline customers, the Sōl Cinema Cafe is  a coffee shop by day, and cinema by night, complemented by a website that offers online ticket sales, advance concessions orders, virtual talk backs, and streaming. The duo planned to launch the brick and mortar first, while gradually cultivating the online platform. When COVID-19 hit the USA, ultimately triggering a statewide construction stop-work-order in New York City, they were forced to stop renovations on the cinema-eatery, and focus on the digital side of the business.  To progress at a time of uncertainty, they are offering programs that were originally slated for the brick and mortar space, through virtual means.  


"Initially, we felt derailed by the pandemic. But we soon realized that the pause in construction gave us the space to focus on implementing the digital aspect of our business and fundraising,” said Moikgantsi Kgama, founder of ImageNation and CEO of the Sōl Cinema Cafe. “We’re also taking this opportunity to expand the brand offerings a bit, by experimenting with more mainstream content.” ​
The film Phoenix, Oregon is the Sōl Cinema Cafe’s first virtual release. Starring James Le Gros (Drugstore Cowboy, Living in Oblivion), and Jesse Borrego (Fame, Blood In Blood Out) and directed by Gary Lundgren, Phoenix, Oregon, takes a comedic look at two middle-aged friends, who seize an unlikely opportunity to reinvent their lives, quitting their jobs to restore an old bowling alley and serve the “world's greatest pizza.” The makers of Phoenix, Oregon were just beginning their theatrical release when COVID-19 forced theaters across America to close.  To keep momentum, they quickly built a platform that allows them to partner with arthouse cinemas and show their film virtually. Their innovative approach landed them an article in Forbes magazine. 

“When I read about the film, I was taken by the can-do spirit of the filmmakers,” said Gregory Gates, Executive Producer of ImageNation and COO of the Sōl Cinema Cafe. “And then, I watched the film, and fell in love. Phoenix, Oregon is the kind of film people of all backgrounds will love,” he exclaimed. “It’s an inspiring story about dreams, perseverance…and pizza!” 

Phoenix, Oregon will be followed by David Weathersby’s, Thee Debauchery Ball, a documentary on Chicago’s Black BDSM house music party. The film will be complemented with 14-nights of online mini Debauchery Ball parties w/ house music DJ’s playing on Instagram, where participants will be encouraged to #BeDebaucherous and post videos and pics to them dancing. Reflecting the brick and mortar experience, all films at the virtual Sōl Cinema Cafe will offer food and beverage pairing suggestions. 

On Wednesday, April 29th, the Sōl Cinema Cafe will launch its “Lunch Break” afternoon talk series, with “The State of Independent Film: In the wake of COVID19”. Initially designed to draw patrons into the Harlem venue for lunch, the online version will bring people to the virtual Sōl Cinema Cafe via FaceBook Live. Panelists for Wednesday’s event include: Wendy Lidell, SVP, Theatrical Distribution & Acquisitions, Kino Lorber; Gina Duncan, Vice President of Film and Strategic Programming at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; Anne Lundgren, Producer, Phoenix, Oregon; and actor Jesse Borrego, co-star of Phoenix, Oregon. 

The goal of these online programs is to give patrons a taste of what they’ll experience at the brick and mortar venue, raise funds, and build a customer base for the click and mortar business.
