Adventure Awaits in This Funny, Sexy, and Queer Fantasy Graphic Novel

(October 28, 2021) Iron Circus Comics’ Kickstarter campaign for Kendra Wells’ REAL HERO SHIT is in its final hours, and the acclaimed publisher is releasing a preview from the highly anticipated 120-page original graphic novel about a mismatched group of adventurers. The quirky fantasy adventure tale follows a demonic playboy prince, a stoic half-elf, a short-fused mage, and a compassionate cleric as they go forth to protect the innocent, fight injustice, and show off how cool they look.

"Real Hero Shit's characters were modeled after the kinds of people I love in fiction as well as real life: funny, smart, flawed, and queer," said cartoonist Kendra Wells. "I set out to make the book I wanted to read, and I am so proud of it and so humbled by the reception to the Kickstarter."
Here’s what critics are saying about REAL HERO SHIT:

“Hilarious… If you like your fantasy stories with a healthy amount of adult humor and sex appeal, then you'll want to keep an eye out for Real Hero Shit. This upcoming graphic novel from cartoonist Kendra Wells (Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Seven Seas) promises to put a fresh, hilarious and even raunchy spin on the classic questing formula.”—IGN

“Unapologetically gay… Eugene is, apparently, a playboy who will use the correct pronouns which, yes, good, more of that, please.”—THE MARY SUE

“Delightful.”--GEEK VIBES NATION

“Silly, sexy, and queer.”—WWAC

“Real Hero Shit brings a lighthearted spin to fantasy adventure.”—io9

“A fun, well-drawn queer romp that’ll make you laugh.”—AIPT Comics

“It’s quirky, it’s fantasy and it’s horny.”—COMICS BEAT

“An absolute delight.”—BOING BOING

“A fun and compelling read that works perfectly as a stand alone story while at the same time left me wanting more from these characters.”—GAY LEAGUE ONLINE

“An absolute delight… A fast-paced and clever story that reads like sitting in on a very witty group playing Dungeons and Dragons.”—COMICS BOOKCASE

“If you’re after sharp character writing, humor and queer rep in your fantasy, then this is the book for you!”—PRISM COMICS

In REAL HERO SHIT, people are going missing in a small mountain town, and the city guards are blocked from a real investigation. The notorious Underguild has assigned Michel a secret mission: find the missing villagers and bring whatever kidnapped them to justice. Unfortunately for Michel and his fellow adventurers, Ani and Hocus, they’re short a fighter and need one more party member to foil this plot. Even more unfortunately, the only volunteer seems to be the arrogant, ostentatious, purple playboy Prince Eugene looking to cure his boredom.

Covert is not a concept that Prince Eugene is familiar with, and let’s just say his commitment to the mission is questionable. Every day is basically spring break for Eugene, but outside the palace walls he crashes into a hard reality: the system that kept him safe in his silk-sheeted bed isn't particularly concerned with the well-being of anyone who isn't him. Eugene will have to level-up his awareness if he means to be a real hero, and time is running short!

About the cartoonist:

Kendra Wells is an illustrator, comic artist, colorist, and designer living in Brooklyn. Their previous work includes Dimension 20: The Unsleeping City and Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Southern Seas and has appeared in places such as Critical Role, Collegehumor, MTV Networks, The Nib, Geek & Sundry, and Abrams Kids.

About the publisher:

C. Spike Trotman was born in DC, raised in MD, and lives in IL. An artist and writer, she founded Iron Circus Comics in 2007, which has since grown to become the region's largest comics publisher. Her notable work includes the webcomic "Templar, Arizona," the Smut Peddler series of erotic comic anthologies, and Poorcraft, a graphic novel guide to frugal living. A Kickstarter early adopter, she pioneered the widely-adopted bonus model that's since completely reshaped the pay system of the small press, jump-starting the current renaissance of alt-comics anthologies. Iron Circus is also the first comics publisher of note to fully incorporate crowdfunding into its business model, inventing one of the single most effective uses of new media in comics publishing today.

Vault Comics Partners with WifWulf Creators to Publish and Distribute Comic to Shops Everywhere

10/28/2021

Picture
Missoula MT (10/28/2021) - Vault has announced a partnership with Dailen Ogden, Collin Kelly, and Jackson Lanzing , the co-creators of WIFWULF, to publish and distribute the smash hit comic to comics shops and bookstores everywhere. WIFWULF is a beautiful comic about werewolves, bloody revenge, and deep loneliness that recently reached funding on Kickstarter. Vault has agreed to take on the publication and distribution of the Kickstarter edition of the book in exchange for the opportunity to offer a version of the book to comic shops and bookstores everywhere. Backers of the WIFWULF campaign will still get rewards unique to the Kickstarter campaign, including an exclusive foil cover, merch, and campaign-specific signed bookplates that will not be available in the direct market.

"I am beyond thrilled to welcome Vault Comics into our pack,” said WIFWULF artist and co-creator,  Dailen Ogden. “Vault has long been a champion of unique and high quality books, and their backing allows us to put WIFWULF into many more hands--to bring our thrilling and unique story to the people who might need it most. Plus, as this campaign grows, their structure and expertise is exactly what we need to execute it in the smoothest way possible! We want everyone feeling excited and satisfied with the book in their hands at the end of the day, and I'm confident that their involvement will mean just that. It opens a thousand doors for WIFWULF that were previously shut, and we're immensely excited to explore them with all of you."

WIFWULF (stylized as WIFWVLF) is an original folklore myth telling the story of Charity Bjornsdotter, a young woman in 1860's Montana who spends her days in the woods with her closest friend, a local wolf she calls Silver Slash. Charity is on the precipice of marriage to the handsomest man in her small village, the mercurial-yet-beloved Paul Skeld. But as her husband isolates her from Silver Slash, she begins to feel a call to the wilds...for it is there that her true destiny awaits. WIFWULF is the harrowing tale of a woman forcibly separated from that which makes her feel alive, a reinterpretation of the classic werewolf myth... and the origin story of a new goddess.

WIFWULF was funded in the first 9 hours, and deemed a “Campaign We Love” by Kickstarter on its first day. With over 800+ backers, it has  found a signficant and growing audience in the Kickstarter comic community. With Vault’s additional support in 2022, we’re confident this book will find an even broader audience  in comic shops and bookstores.
“Jackson and Collin are two of my oldest friends in comics, and — as everyone knows — I adore all the brilliance that comes pouring out of their hivemind,” added Vault Editor-in-Chief, Adrian Wassel. “Through them, I got to know Dailen, and I’ve watched carefully these past few years as they’ve improved from really-dang-good to melt-your-eyeballs-fantastic. The instant the WIFWULF Kickstarter went live, I was thrilled. Thrilled to see some of my favorite people working together, thrilled to back it, and then triply thrilled when we started to discuss partnering. This is one of those moments in indie comics that reminds you why you do it: working with your friends (again!), helping new and incredible voices like Dailen break out to an even larger audience, and doing it all as genuine partners. And, most importantly, WIFWULF is riveting — a dance of grace and brutality that will move any reader, but especially those who’ve found the courage to piece themselves back together after being hurt. I’m so honored to join the pack. Howl with us.”

"I'm deeply thankful to Vault for joining our pack - and after wonderful experiences on ZOJAQAN and DARK ONE, I'm so happy to rejoin theirs,” added WIFWULF co-creator and co-writer, Jackson Lanzing. “They're the only publisher in the market that we'd even consider working with on a project as personal and strange as WIFWULF - especially after our incredible first few weeks of funding released us from any real need to do so! But we just trust and appreciate the folks at Vault implicitly and it was hugely gratifying to find enthusiastic partners who loved the work as fully as we did. This move helps guarantee fulfillment, quality, and reach, so we can both satisfy our incredible pack of backers and howl loud enough to be heard by those far from the woods. WIFWULF is still in our hands... but now we have a team of incredible and passionate professionals on our side to help make WIFWULF a reality."

The Vault edition of WIFWULF will is planned to hit store shelves in mid-2022. The WIFWULF Kickstarter campaign is live until November 13th, 2021. You can learn more about it at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jacksonlanzing/wifwulf.

BLOOD ON SUNSET #1 Out December 2021

Is the California sheen just a cover for the criminal underworld, or is there a deeper ‘lair’?

OCT. 21, 2021, (SEATTLE, WA) — The 1940s were the hope and the beginning of a new era of American dominance on the world stage, but the “war years” have nothing on the allure and promise of Los Angeles. The all-new series, Blood on Sunset, written by visionary newcomer Mark D’Anna with art by Arjuna Susini (Made Men), colors by Vittorio Astone (Canto) and letters by Andworld, explores the darker side of Los Angeles tinged with the bloody undercurrent of organized crime...and then some.

It’s June 20th, 1947. Former cop Clint Braddock is drinking at a bar on Sunset Boulevard when he gets a call from his ex-girlfriend, Beverly. Bugsy Siegel’s just been murdered, and she found the body. She’s terrified and needs his help. Fast. Braddock arrives to find the aftermath of a violent, sadistic murder. Not your typical mob hit. It almost looks like the work of…Eaters.

Amidst the carnage, Braddock finds evidence that someone may be trying to pin the murder on him. Braddock is part Eater, and he’s spent years keeping his true nature hidden. But it looks like someone knows what he is, and is using it to implicate him in the biggest crime to hit Los Angeles in decades. Now, the seat of power in the criminal underworld is up for grabs, and rumors of a vampire crime syndicate emerging as major players look disturbingly plausible. As Braddock is pulled deeper into the hunt for Siegel’s killer, he’ll find he’s either the ideal ally for the vampire cause, or the perfect weapon to stop it. It all depends on where his loyalties lie.
“I grew up in Los Angeles and have always been fascinated with this city’s history, which can be glamorous, beautiful, tragic, and incredibly violent, all at once,” said writer Mark D’Anna. “Years ago, I read a book called L.A. Noir by John Buntin, which laid out that darker side of L.A.’s history with organized crime in remarkable detail. I immediately knew I needed to bring that world to life in comics, and put my own horror spin on those classic noir tropes while paying homage to my hometown, and so, Blood on Sunset was born--

We’ve put a ton of research into the book, pulled hundreds of reference photos, and learned everything we could about the major players in the L.A. criminal underworld. Then we built our wild world of vampires, deception, greed, and murder around it. The amount of painstaking detail
Arjuna Susini put into every panel still has me in awe. For someone who lives thousands of miles away from Los Angeles, he perfectly captured the soul of the city, and brought our world to life in a way I never imagined possible.”

“I loved immersing myself in this story because it is a really interesting period of American history,” said artist
Arjuna Susini. “I have always loved historical reconstructions that refer to the recent history of the 20th century, in comics but also in cinema. While I was working on this project, I thought about films like Once Upon a Time in America—how all around that period were the great names in American organized crime despite the light of progress in the U.S. The shadows of violence created this horror mood, and the end-result, a very unique comic.”

DEADSIDE WAR BEGINS IN SHADOWMAN THIS JANUARY

October 21st, 2021 — Terror takes over the Valiant Universe this January...

The critically-acclaimed series SHADOWMAN will unleash part 1 of 'Deadside War' in SHADOWMAN #5, a gripping horror storyline that will unfold within the pages of SHADOWMAN for four issues and feature the eagerly anticipated return of fan-favorite character PUNK MAMBO.

Jack Boniface is SHADOWMAN, the brave and powerful supernatural protector who keeps humanity safe from the deadly creatures that dwell within the dimension known as the Deadside. When more and more of these nightmarish creatures start clawing into the world of the living, Jack won't be able to stand alone against the global threat. "We’re seeing Blights — tears in the fabric of reality between our world and the Deadside — opening with increased frequency and increased supernatural mayhem," said New York Times bestselling writer CULLEN BUNN. "It will also awaken some old adversaries who might be too much even for the combined might of our heroes. All this brings us to the titular war, which could rip the entirety of the Valiant Universe apart."

Rising star artist PEDRO ANDREO aims to pull fans right into Cullen's haunting story. "I wanted to capture the horror, stress, and oppression that an actual zombie attack would have in a city that wasn't expecting it," stated Pedro. "I couldn't decide on whether I wanted slow zombies or running zombies so I went with a little bit of both. Both types of zombies! Could you imagine? That would be a nightmare."

In addition to bringing the horror to new heights, Pedro also enjoyed the opportunity to blend in energetic action sequences. "Cullen's script was specific about everything that took place in these panels, but it let me go wild on the shots, angles, and movement, so I went full anime on them. I had a lot of fun doing the kinetic effects and such crazy panels full of detail, gore and action."

Discover the Vampire Celebrity Caught on Camera in a Brand New Series this January 2022

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 21, 2021) – BOOM! Studios, in collaboration with 20th Television, is proud to announce ANGEL, a brand new eight-issue comic book series available beginning January 2022. Producer and director of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire and Eisner Award-nominated writer Christopher Cantwell (Iron Man, The United States of Captain America), artist Daniel Bayliss (WWE The New Day: The Power of Positivity, Labyrinth: Coronation), colorist Patricio Delpeche (Origins), and letterer Becca Carey shine the spotlight on everyone’s favorite vampire with a soul in the role of a lifetime . . . Detective Angel.

Welcome to Detective TV, starring Angel and his co-star—Cordelia! But wait, Angel isn’t just a celebrity? Nope, he leads a double life… as a real monster hunter for Angel Investigations!

Sometimes, though, this double life can get his friends into trouble, and as Wesley recovers from a horrific curse, Angel stumbles into a series of supernatural events which lead to him getting sucked into an unexpected and mysterious world. He soon faces a terrifying enemy, who sees him as a threat . . .

Christopher Cantwell is the current writer of the ongoing Iron Man series for Marvel Entertainment. His other comics credits include Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body with BOOM! Studios, The United States of Captain America and Doctor Doom for Marvel Entertainment, The Blue Flame from Vault Comics, and She Could Fly and Everything for Dark Horse’s Berger Books. Cantwell is also a co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire and additionally served as an executive producer on the first season of the upcoming TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Paper Girls, coming soon to Amazon Prime.

“I love writing character ensemble stories, stories about seemingly random individuals who suddenly find themselves trapped in the orbits of others. ANGEL has one of the best ensembles to ever grace the TV screen, and theirs is a story about a family of choice,” said Cantwell. “When BOOM! approached me, I leaped at the chance to honor and celebrate the original series in a fresh way, pulling on some loose threads and weaving new ones.  It takes all the characters and plays 52 card pick-up with them, reshuffling their roles and identities into a literal alternate universe that LOOKS and FEELS like Angel, but is also something else entirely.”

Daniel Bayliss is a Mexican cartoonist, illustrator and co-creator of Moonhead Press. He has worked on titles such as WWE The New Day: The Power of Positivity, Big Trouble in Little China/Escape from New York, Jim Henson's Labyrinth: Coronation, Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Dragons, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as well as on original series Translucid and Kennel Block Blues for BOOM! Studios. He was nominated for The Russ Manning Award in 2016.

“I love what BOOM! Studios has done with this series and especially what our incredible writer Chris Cantwell is doing with this story! Here you will see all of our favorite characters in a slightly different reality and yet they all maintain their core and humor in a story that is highly entertaining and with unexpected turns,”  said Bayliss. “This has given me the opportunity as an artist to represent great action scenes, creepy creatures and demons, but what I love the most is that Chris also goes a little deeper with the characters and the interactions between them, with more personal situations with which we can relate more closely with the characters. For me, these are the heart and soul of the series, and they have been my favorite scenes when putting ink on the page.”

ANGEL #1 features main cover art by acclaimed illustrator Nimit Malavia (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and variant cover art by fan favorite artists InHyuk Lee (Venom) and Jahoy Lindsay (Hawkeye: Kate Bishop).

“Angel has always been a contradiction of good vs. evil, spotlight vs. shadows, and tortured past vs. redemptive future, which is what makes Chris and Daniel’s take on this version of the iconic vampire so delightful as they imagine a universe where Angel’s identities and worlds collide,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “It’s all magical hijinks, mysterious Big Bads, and tons of secrets in this fresh new take on the characters you know and love from ANGEL.”

Angel premiered on the WB Network on October 5th, 1999 and was a spin-off from the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series ran for five seasons from 1999-2004, starring David Boreanaz as Angel, the tortured vampire destined to walk the earth with a soul who moved to LA to set up shop as a supernatural private investigator. Despite Angel’s best efforts to deal with the sins of his past all by himself, Angel Investigations soon became home to other lost souls searching for redemption and willing to fight by his side.

ANGEL is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney;  Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; We Only Find Them When They’re Dead by Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo; Seven Secrets by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo; Dark Blood by Latoya Morgan and Moises Hidalgo; Eat the Rich by Sarah Gailey and Pius Bak; and Maw by Jude Doyle and A.L Kaplan. PORTLAND, Ore. 10/20/2021 — An all-new sci-fi/romance begins in the upcoming Bolero by rising stars Wyatt Kennedy and Luana Vecchio. This visually-stunning five issue miniseries will launch from Image Comics in January 2022.

“Page by page, Wyatt and I put our whole love and passion for comics into this miniseries to convey the strong sense of loneliness and despair that many feel after the end of a relationship," said Vecchio. "Running away might often seem like the simplest solution, but there is no simple solution when dealing with pain”

Kennedy added: "I sincerely can't thank Image enough for giving us the chance to tell this story. I've lived with it and these characters for nearly six years, and no one besides the tremendously talented Luana Vecchio could have imbued this with such soul and joy and kept me from rewriting it for the 87th time."

A woman running away from a broken heart discovers a mother-key into parallel universes. The rules are: The key can work on any door. The mother will only let you visit 53 universes. Do not ask to speak to the mother. Never hop more than 53 times.

Sex Criminals meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in this fantastical, emotional journey featuring a beautifully diverse cast of characters.

Bolero #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, January 12:
  • Cover A by Vecchio - Diamond Code NOV210047
  • Cover B by Jim Mahfood - Diamond Code NOV210048
