She’s gonna need it, because plucky Byron’s made it allll the way to The North Pole in search of his dad—a wannabe-elf who ran off years ago to join Santa at the workshop.

But not only isn’t Dad there, Byron’s timing sucks. Mrs. Claus just bit the big one in a tragic toy accident, and Santa vows to make all the world’s brats pay.
When Ellie catches wind of his scheme—to use monster toys to kidnap every child on Earth—she teams up with the Easter Bunny and St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun to try and bring him down.
But when that fails, she must swallow her pride and work with her ex-husband, Witherspoon…the one man who understands Santa's operation better than anyone she knows.
Turns out, he’s just the man for the job, wielder of an ancient Santa-killer weapon. Together, they must finally put family first and confront the not-so-jolly St. Nick at his icy stronghold.
And maybe—just maybe—learn to live happily ever after…

IDW and Hasbro Raise Awareness for Veteran Mental Health with G.I. JOE Comic Book Series
During National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month,
Poignant G.I. JOE Story about PTSD and Recovery is the Centerpiece for
Virtual Panel with Veterans and Available to Read for Free Online

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 18, 2020) – To bring attention to the serious issues facing the heroes who have served our country, IDW and Hasbro have teamed up during September’s National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month with promotions timed to coincide with The Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

At the center of IDW and Hasbro’s combined efforts is the G.I. JOE comic book series, based on the iconic military toy brand. The recent seventh issue in the series, entitled “A Soldier’s Heart”, focuses on Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara, a combat veteran struggling with the return to civilian life, who joins a support group and navigates both everyday challenges and tragic losses on a path toward recovery. The G.I. JOE creative team consulted with proud service members and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to craft the story and provided valuable real-world information on mental health and resources for support in the issue for the benefit of readers who might require it.

During the month of September, IDW and Hasbro have made G.I. JOE #7 available to read for free online, in an effort to spread awareness of suicide prevention and mental health. IDW also commissioned original artwork from fan-favorite artist Freddie Williams II as a public service announcement, featuring G.I. JOE characters and a banner proclaiming “Hope Lives Here”, a message of encouragement ubiquitous with suicide prevention initiatives.

Furthermore, IDW and Hasbro have hosted a virtual panel to raise awareness. Moderated by George Gustines of The New York Times, the panel brings comic book creators, licensors and publishers, combat veterans, and experts on mental health issues together to discuss this important topic. Participants include:

  • Paul Allor                   Writer, G.I. JOE
  • Michael Kelly             VP Global Publishing, Hasbro
  • Patricia Watson         PhD, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and G.I. JOE #7 Consultant
  • Duane K.L. France    U.S. Army SFC, LPC, and G.I. JOE #7 Consultant
  • Tom Waltz                  IDW Senior Editor, Writer, and Former U.S. Marine

The G.I. JOE panel addressing suicide prevention awareness can be viewed here.

“G.I. JOE is one of the great pop culture icons of the past century, and I think everyone involved recognizes how powerful this brand can be when used to shine a light on mental health among our veteran population,” says writer Paul Allor. “I hope this panel and making the issue available for free during the month of September helps spread that message even further.”

In 1982, Hasbro debuted G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero, a reimagining of their classic toy line with a premise that pitted a special mission force, “G.I. JOE”, against a ruthless criminal organization, “Cobra”. One of the most successful toy lines in history, A Real American Hero has transformed over the decades into a valuable multimedia intellectual property, adapted and merchandised as feature films, video games, comic books, animated series, etc.

Since 2010, IDW Publishing has produced licensed G.I. JOE comic books showcasing the fan-favorite characters of A Real American Hero. Their latest interpretation of the series, entitled simply G.I. JOE, launched in 2019 and follows an insurgency of military operatives and civilian recruits struggling to resist a victorious Cobra takeover. The series, written by Paul Allor and illustrated by Chris Evenhuis, Niko Walter, and Emma Vieceli, is distinguished by moving, character-driven tales that explore (and sometimes challenge) concepts of patriotism, duty and sacrifice, courage and personal responsibility, loss, and trauma.

IDW’s New Transformers: Escape Comic Book Views “World War” Through the Eyes of Rescuers and Refugees
Cybertron’s Civil War Rages On in Five-Part Comic Book Miniseries
SAN DIEGO, CA (September 16, 2020) – IDW will expand the universe of the ongoing Transformers comic books with an all-new miniseries entitled Transformers: Escape, focusing on a handful of fan-favorite Autobots scrambling to save innocent bystanders from the war between Cybertronian factions. Written by Brian Ruckley, architect of IDW’s Transformers continuity since 2019, and illustrated by Bethany McGuire-Smith, Transformers: Escape is a five-issue monthly series slated for release beginning in December.

As Cybertron descends into a state of war, countless civilians — unaligned with the Autobots, Decepticons, or any faction — are caught in the crossfire. Fortunately, a solution may be coming, as Wheeljack, Hound, Nautica, and some of Cybertron’s greatest (and most infamous) scientists seek to reactivate the Ark program and evacuate the planet with huge spaceships. On the verge of war, will their efforts be enough to escape?

“Escape’s a cocktail of what I love most about Transformers, with some of my favorite characters and a few surprise guest stars caught up in a pretty epic escalation,” says Ruckley. “I’ve always thought it would be a pretty terrifying, bewildering experience for aliens – non-Cybertronians – to be caught between warring factions of big transforming robots. We’re exploring the question: Who are the most dangerous Cybertronians of all?”

“I'm excited to be working on this awesome chapter in the Transformers storyline,” says McGuire-Smith. “From the perspective of Hound and Wheeljack, we will see what matters most when so many lives are on the line… and whom they can really trust as multiple threats rise.”

“From the launch in 2019, the Transformers universe that's unfolded in the ongoing series and in Transformers: Galaxies has been about showing Cybertronians from exciting new perspectives,” says editor David Mariotte. “That's why we're thrilled to have Brian Ruckley and Beth McGuire-Smith reuniting to dig into the lives of faces both new and familiar as war breaks out and how they respond to the other inhabitants of Cybertron.”

Transformers: Escape #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, each by an established Transformers comic book artist. Cover A features illustration from series artist Bethany McGuire-Smith, Cover B from Winston Chan, and two Retailer Incentive editions feature art by Sara Pitre-Durocher and Alex Milne, respectively.

For information on how to acquire copies of the Transformers comic books, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Award-winning Writer Pens Subversive (and timely) Underground Comic Series Austin, TX: The Post-apocalyptic U.S. Shows No Mercy

9/16/2020

Picture
Sept. 16, 2020, (EUGENE, OR) -- A knockout punch of passion, politics, and resistance, After the Fall is a wild adventure where old politics, new religion, and personal polemics collide in an attempt to build a new kind of ruling body, and a better world; the one promised by the Founders but never achieved. Created by award-winning writer Jacqueline Goldfinger (Bottle Fly), with art by touted illustrator and designer Keni “ThomCat23” Thomas and letters by Taylor Esposito of Ghost Glyph Studios, After the Fall tells the story of the superhero next door and the new world that’s waiting for us… if we don’t let petty bullshit get in the way.

After a plague sweeps through the U.S., Canada and Mexico build a wall along their borders to keep Americans out in order to prevent the spread of the disease. In a lone outpost outside Austin, Texas, a crew of medical misfits have succeeded in conquering the plague. Now they are determined to beat back the corrupt politicians, defeat the ravenous half-human/half-mechanical Vultures, and restore their home.

After the Fall #1: Blood Memory introduces an ensemble of multi-ethnic characters with a range of gender identities who are working to survive a fractured, post-plague existence while rebuilding Austin, after the world has built a wall around America to keep us inside our own borders (yup, they dislike us that much).
“When I first saw Keni’s work I was struck by the precise provocation of his images and ability to tell a story quickly and efficiently,” said Jacqueline Goldfinger. “I’d had an idea for a comic series earlier but hesitated to move forward because I felt like I hadn’t found the right artist. Eight months later, I saw Keni’s work, and I was so glad that I waited to find the perfect illustrator for this story.”

“Jacqueline and I were on the same page immediately,” said Keni Thomas “We knew that now was a time for a comic series that embraced our biggest fears and brightest hopes, that told a story with characters who are as diverse, funny, eccentric, and holy as those in the real world.”

After the Fall #1: Blood Memory is now available on ComiXology! For

This quirky comic book centers around a mild-mannered superhero with the unique ability to step out of the comic strip panels to affect the events in other panels, breaking the rules of time and space with imaginative, mind-bending – and often hilarious – results. It won the Bologna Ragazzi Award for Best Comic at the 2020 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, and has garnered enthusiastic starred reviews from Kirkus, Booklist, and Publishers Weekly.

  • Kirkus (Starred Review) -- “dozens of mind- and narrative-bending graphic mini-adventures” “ uncommon cleverness”
  • Booklist (Starred Review) -- “Jousselin breathes joyous life into the form for fans and scholars of every age”
  • Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) -- “exudes infectious charm as he inspires those around him.”

After catching the attention of so many noted reviewers, Magnetic Press’s “local superhero” has been chosen to be a Junior Library Guild Selection, receiving the coveted JLG Gold Standard Stamp, signifying a title of the highest quality and a must-read book chosen for their curated collection.

Magnetic Press’s Publisher Mike Kennedy responded to JLG selection by saying “MISTER INVINCIBLE has such a unique and clever appeal to readers of all ages that there’s no wonder why it is so universally praised. We were hooked when we first saw Pascal Jousselin’s wild, fourth-wall-breaking series of strips, and that seems to hold true for almost everyone else who picks up, too! It sparks the imagination and will change the way you think about comics.”

MISTER INVINCIBLE is currently available wherever books and graphic novels are sold, and available to retailers through Diamond Book Distributors. Digital versions are also available on ComiXology and Amazon Kindle.

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 16, 2020) – LUMBERJANES, the landmark Eisner and GLAAD award-winning series, will wrap its historic six year run in December 2020, announced BOOM! Studios today. LUMBERJANES: END OF SUMMER #1, from cartoonist Kat Leyh (Snapdragon), co-writer and co-creator Shannon Watters, artists Kanesha C. Bryant (Encyclopedia Lumberjanica) and Alexa Bosy (Lumberjanes: Somewhere That’s Green #1), as well as returning co-creator and series artist Brooklyn Allen, concludes the series in a special oversized issue.

In the final chapter of the “End of Summer” epic event, the brave campers and counselors of Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types are in the fight of their lives against the mysterious force known as the Grey. Molly has discovered a deep and ancient forest magic which she hopes to use to protect her friends and the home they’ve all found at camp. But will she be strong enough to save everyone in the camp and the forest? Or is the all-encompassing, all-erasing Grey just too powerful for anyone to stop?

“When we announced ‘End of Summer’, we knew it would be the conclusion of a journey full of friendship, wonder, and fun for the Lumberjanes and for those of us who have wandered into the forest alongside them. We’re so happy that so many readers, young and old, have found joy and adventure whenever they sat down to a new story with Jo, Mal, Ripley, April, Molly, and all the other beloved characters we’ve grown to love throughout the years,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “While this is the end of the Lumberjanes monthly comic book series for now, it’s not the end of the ‘Janes and new adventures, so stay tuned for more exciting news to come.”

Launched in 2014 under BOOM! Studios’ YA-focused BOOM! Box imprint by series co-creators Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson and Brooklyn Allen, Lumberjanes was originally solicited as a limited series, but the overwhelming response from fans transformed it into an ongoing series that has become a New York Times best-seller, earned numerous nominations for prestigious awards including the GLAAD Media Award and the Eisner Awards (which it has won twice), and have even crossed over with heroes from the DC Comics Universe (in Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy). The Lumberjanes have expanded to middle-grade novels published by Amulet Books and a diverse array of merchandise from pins to patches.

Print copies of LUMBERJANES: END OF SUMMER #1 will be available in December 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.
