September 30th, 2021 – He spent years promoting the Valiant Universe before it became his job.

Meet Nic Osborn, the new Marketing Coordinator at Valiant Entertainment. With a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Purdue Global University, over four years of freelance comics press experience as well as two years serving as the Editor in Chief at the comics press outlet Comic Watch and co-host of the Valiant Watch podcast, Nic has embraced the role of Marketing Coordinator at Valiant Entertainment to continue sharing his passion for the Valiant Universe.

"I am incredibly hyped to join the Valiant team. I feel like I could take flight beside FAITH herself at any moment," said Nic. "Valiant boasts an undeniably impressive legacy and still has so much potential for the future in comics... and more. As a part of the fandom, I've seen the passion so many have for this universe and know firsthand how easy it is to love the characters that live in it. I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this remarkable era for Valiant and after my short time with the team so far, there is already so much I can't wait to share with everyone. Longtime fans and newcomers alike, you are definitely going to want to stay tuned for what's to come!"

As the Marketing Coordinator, Nic is working closely with parent company DMG Entertainment on an array of new projects across various platforms including Kickstarter and so much more to continue growing the Valiant brand. He will also be utilizing his experience to focus on digital initiatives throughout social media and the fan-facing Valiant Voice newsletter, the expansion of press relationships and helping with internal Valiant marketing strategies.

Already a dedicated fan of the Valiant Universe before joining the team, Nic is eager to spread the word about the ambitious road ahead, including the first Valiant Kickstarter tabletop game Valiant: FIGHT for DEADSIDE and the return of his favorite character SHADOWMAN in January. "I'm a horror fan at heart, and because of that SHADOWMAN will always be a special character to me. From the '90s introduction to this supernatural superhero to the current volume delving into his horrific roots, Jack Boniface is a force to be reckoned with for things that go bump in the night. His featured role in our first Kickstarter tabletop game Valiant: FIGHT for DEADSIDE as well as the upcoming return of SHADOWMAN from Cullen Bunn and Pedro Andreo is sure to further prove why he is such a timeless character, and one that any fan of the genre should check out."

Director of Valiant Publishing Gregg Katzman is confident Nic's the right person to help the Valiant brand move forward and reach new heights. "We're lucky to have Nic at Valiant," said Gregg. "His ambition, creativity, and authentic love for Valiant's characters are exactly what we need as we head towards a sincerely exciting year of brand new launches for the Valiant Universe in 2022. You'll be hearing more about that very soon..."
Look for Valiant comics at a comic shop near you and more developments to be revealed soon about the Valiant Universe in 2022.

As always, stay Valiant!

We Have Demons #1 (of 3) written by Scott Snyder with art by co-creator Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion with colors by Dave McCaig and letters by Tom Napolitano.

In practically every folklore throughout history, there’s a struggle between angels and demons–beings of goodness and light and monstrous beings of darkness. But what if this struggle, this war for the soul of humanity, wasn’t rooted in the mystical or supernatural, but in science?
Lam was named after the first female angel, “Lamassu.” Lam never really understood her father’s devotion to their small-town Unitarian church. And when he dies under mysterious circumstances, she starts to question everything she thought she knew.
We Have Demons is full throttle entertainment by two comic book megastars, featuring action, conspiracies, secret organizations, monsters, mayhem, and a climactic war of good and evil with no less than the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

October 12, 2021
Clear #1 (of 6) by Scott Snyder with art by co-creator Francis Manapul and letters by Andworld Design.
Welcome to the future, a world where people can connect to the internet neurologically and mediate the real world through the lenses of their eyes, transforming reality. Everything can be skinned to fit a preference from steampunk to old fashioned Hollywood glamour. If you can name it, you can live it. You choose how you see the world and no one else knows what you’re seeing.
San Francisco, private detective Sam Dunes is working a case when he’s approached by his former police partner, who informs him of his ex-wife’s alleged suicide. But nothing about this adds up. And when he receives a gift in the mail, Dunes finds himself pulled into a wild and twisting mystery that stretches from the city’s deadly underworld to the even deadlier heights of the city’s wealthy and powerful elite.

October 19, 2021
Night of the Ghoul #1 (of 6) written by Scott Snyder with art by co-creator Francesco Francavilla and letters by Andworld Design.
It was said to be the greatest horror movie in cinematic history. Shot in 1936, “Night of the Ghoul” by writer/director T.F. Merritt was meant to sit beside “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” as an instant classic… But the legendary film never made it to the silver screen. Just before editing was finished, a mysterious studio fire destroyed the footage and killed the cast and crew during their celebratory wrap-party. Rumors of the doomed film’s greatness persist to this day, but no footage from it was ever recovered…until now.
Forest Inman is a horror film obsessive who digitizes old films for the famed Aurora movie studio. When he stumbles across a seemingly forgotten canister of footage, his discovery sends him on a dark odyssey to the California desert, where he’s warned by a mysterious old man that the film’s ghoul is far more than a work of fiction.
Night of The Ghoul is a dazzling work of contemporary horror, intercutting between the present-day narrative and the story of the lost film (drawn by Francavilla in stunning black and white).
In July, comiXology Originals announced that Scott Snyder of Best Jackett Press will release eight new titles for the exclusive digital comics line collaborating with some of the biggest artists in comics, including Rafael Albuquerque, Greg Capullo, Francesco Francavilla, Jamal Igle, Jock, Tula Lotay, Francis Manapul, and Dan Panosian with veteran comics editor Will Dennis overseeing the books. More release dates will be announced soon.

THE JOHN LEE HOOKER ESTATE AND Z2 COMICS TO DOCUMENT THE LIFE OF BLUES LEGEND IN NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL

Gabe Soria, Jarrett Williams and Eisner-Winner Kyle Baker Invoke the Legendary Blues Man in ‘One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer’ Ahead of His 105TH Birthday

LOS ANGELES, CA—The John Lee Hooker Estate and Z2 Comics announce the graphic novel John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, documenting the life of the legendary blues musician, told by Gabe Soria (Murder Ballads) and Jarrett Williams (Super Pro K.O.!) and illustrated by eight-time Eisner award winner Kyle Baker, known for his work with Marvel and DC Comics, including his revival of Plastic Man, this is the official graphic novel document of one of the most celebrated figures in blues music!

"The Hooker Family thanks Z2 Comics for bringing our dad to life through the fantastic world of John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer and introducing him and the blues to a whole new audience” says Zakiya Hooker, daughter of John Lee Hooker.

Legendary blues man John Lee Hooker lived more life in one of his songs than the collective lifetimes of many. Spanning several decades of the American experience, John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer tells three tales of Hooker's storied life through the perspective of those who lived within his massive orbit, weaving textured and interpretative stories that rise to the lofty creative heights of his music and fall to the gritty reality of trying to thrive in several unforgiving eras.

“One of the most satisfying parts of putting together graphic novels in direct partnership with musicians and their estates is not only releasing books that stand on their own creatively but adding to the canon of the lives of some of the most legendary figures in the history of any genre” says Josh Frankel, CEO, and publisher. “This book is another fine example of that, and one that I would rank among some of the best work we’ve published.”

Following up on the success of 2020’s Chasin’ the Bird: Charlie Parker in California graphic novel, which has received rave reviews, and was a year-end favorite, this is sure to be essential reading for John Lee Hooker fans and American music historians alike. Z2’s John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer will be on shelves at comic, book and record stores respectively in spring 2022, just in time for the celebration of his 105TH birthday. This beautiful new work of graphic nonfiction will also be released in a special deluxe and super deluxe version, featuring an exclusive vinyl single, art prints and more, available only through the Z2 Comics website.

About John Lee Hooker:
Known to music fans around the world as the “King of the Boogie,” John Lee Hooker endures as one of the true superstars of the blues genre: the ultimate beholder of cool. His work is widely recognized for its impact on modern music – his simple, yet deeply effective songs transcend borders and languages around the globe. Each decade of Hooker’s long career brought a new generation of fans and fresh opportunities for the ever-evolving artist. He never slowed down either: As John Lee Hooker entered his 70s, he suddenly found himself in the most successful era of his career – reinvented yet again, and energized as ever, touring and recording up until his passing in 2001.

Zombies, Cyborgs, & a Fat Slob

SEP. 29, 2021, (SEATTLE, WA) — Band of Bards is proud to announce Prospects, now live on Kickstarter! The all-new a nine-issue miniseries is an absurdist political satire from writer and creator Maxwell Majernik (Path of Monsters) and artist Jean Franco (Monty the Dinosaur). A title that’s sure to ring the bell for fans of Rick and Morty, Shaun of the Dead, and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

The town of Ridgeville has been stuck in the middle of a 150-year-old battle between two mad scientists, and former colleagues, Edwin Grabowski and Victor Farsimov. Both claim to have figured out the secret of immortality and created armies of zombies and cyborgs using their respective methods. The scientists have waged a war for so long within the town, that the townspeople now consider it an honor to be abducted by either one of them in their quest for glory.

Anyone who shows any bit of potential, be it brains, brawn, or anything in between, will be captured by one of the scientists by the time they are 25 years old. This brings us on to 30 year old Colin Bates, who isn’t one of the prospects. He has been selected by no one, not by the scientists, girls, or even friends. He spends most of his days watching TV in his basement, trying to avoid doing odd jobs for his Grandma and her posse. Yet everything changes when a notorious terrorist, intent on destroying both scientists, appears in Colin’s basement, begging him to take over his legacy.
"Jean has given Prospects so much life,” said Maxwell Majernik. “I gave him as much of a blank slate as I could, and what he has been able to put together (and pull influence from) has been unreal. He balances inviting visuals with hyper-violence in a way I’ve never seen before."

"Max and Jean have created an uncanny world of characters that are so easy to dislike, that you have to love them,” said Band of Bards Publisher, Chris Benamati. “This world brings me back to a lot of experiences I enjoyed as a kid, from its classic ‘90s cartoon look, to the deep plot that's hidden so well in what people might conceive to be a simple story. It's an allegory of every small town's attempt to re-define itself...except that this time it goes horribly, horribly wrong."

Lunar Distribution is proud to announce a distribution deal with Floating World Comics, Silver Sprocket and Uncivilized Books to bring their books to the direct market and other retailers.

The three independent publishers will offer retailers a 50% discount, starting with their December releases as well as October and November titles on FOC.

“We are very excited to add Floating World Comics, Silver Sprocket, and Uncivilized Books to the Lunar family,” says Lunar co-owner Christina Merkler. “They offer a mix of titles that will be a great addition to any store selection and provide an opportunity to bring new readers in. Lunar's focus is to offer publishers with a passion for comics and diversity to our retail accounts and we believe they will be a perfect fit.“

Floating World Comics owner, Jason Leivian, says, “We’re excited to partner with Lunar and work with Christina, who shares a passion for independent comics and a vision of an evolving direct market, getting comics into a new generation of specialty shops and bookstores.”

"Calling Marvel and DC 'mainstream' is so strange to me, when I meet people all the time who love comics but don't read any superhero books," says Silver Sprocket founder Avi Ehrlich. "We publish comics that have been massively popular through some of the weirder channels, and it's super exciting for them to finally start thriving in the more formal 'comic book direct market' world."

"It is always good to have more options in distribution,” says Uncivilized Comics founder Tom Kaczynski. “It makes the whole comics ecosystem a little bit more anti-fragile. We're excited to work with Lunar, participate in the evolution of the direct market, and bring our books and comics to more readers."
Floating World Comics is an independent publisher of international, avant-garde, and genre comics and graphic novels. Our publications are an exciting extension of our bookstore in Portland, OR, which has been operating at the heart of contemporary comics for over fifteen years. With a focus on a unique, curated selection of the most outstanding comics from around the world, we bring new voices to the forefront. As we have seen time and again, the mainstream often springs from underground.

Silver Sprocket is a radical indie comics publisher, shop, and gallery based in San Francisco specializing in comics that are socially conscious and fun, with numerous Eisner and Ignatz awards under their belts.

Uncivilized Books is a boutique comics publishing house based in Minneapolis, MN. Uncivilized Books champions cartoonists unafraid to grapple with big ideas. Their books are funny, smart, dense, and satisfying. We envision a future full of cartoon philosophers, comic-book poets, graphic novelists, and doodler scientists.
