Flying Rats, Creepy Critters, and Wizerds — Oh My!
PORTLAND, OR: From flying rats to creepy critters, picture books to middle grade, Oni Press is happy to announce several of the highly anticipated fall 2020 titles: This is a Flying Rat, Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters, and Wizerd! And the Potion of Dreams!
Following the well-received This is a Taco and This is a Whoopsie! from creative duo Andrew Cangelose and Josh Shipley, This is a Flying Rat follows a jetpack-wearing, graffiti-painting rat. When it starts zooming around claiming pigeons and flying rats are the same thing, he’ll have to take a series of tests to prove he’s got the feathers to be in the book.
From longtime editor, Grace Bornhoft, “Cangelose and Shipley never cease to amaze me in their ability to seamlessly weave a story that’s equal parts witty, educational, goofy, and warmhearted. This Is a Flying Rat is the perfect follow up in their series of children’s books about the importance of being the author of your own story.”

In Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters from Caitlin Rose Boyle, Frankie Fairy loves to learn about creepy crawly critters in her own backyard! Now that she's at a new school, she's excited to learn even more about them! Instead, she learns that the other fairy kids in class think she's the creepy one. Is Frankie really that scary? And if she is—is that really a bad thing? Maybe her creepy crawly friends can help her figure it out!

A garden-tending wizerd is dragged into the adventuring life by a small warrior princess, as they seek the ingredients of a wish-granting potion in Wizerd! And the Potion of Dreams! by Michael Sweater and Rachel Dukes. (The warrior princesses’ wish? To get big and strong — and hunky! — really hunky!) Thanks to ransacking goblins, a too-noble knight, an evil wych, and the warrior’s endless appetite, securing the potion ingredients won’t be as quick or as simple as the wizerd had hoped!

This is a Flying Rat! will be available September 1, 2020 with Wizerd! And the Potion of Dreams! available on September 8, 2020 and Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters on October 6, 2020. All three titles will be available in stores and online where books are sold.

“This penetrating portrait of a broken correctional system and a flawed man focuses on his legacy of courage, which towers over the forces stacked against him.”-Publishers Weekly Starred Review

“Sure to be one of the most discussed books this year.” - Library Journal Starred Review

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 31, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today announced the BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA Winter Book Tour, in support of the new graphic memoir written by Frank “Big Black” Smith and Jared Reinmuth and illustrated by Améziane (Muhammad Ali), available everywhere books are sold on February 18, 2020.

BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA is an unflinching look at the true story about the price of standing up to injustice in what remains one of the bloodiest civil rights confrontations in American history, told for the very first time from the man at the center of it all – Frank “Big Black” Smith. Co-writer Jared Reinmuth will visit bookstores and libraries across New York state to meet with readers and sign copies of this historic release, with select appearances by special guests Daniel Meyers, one of the key lawyers in the decades-long lawsuit following the events of the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising, and Pearl “Battle” Smith, Frank “Big Black” Smith’s wife.

In the summer of 1971, New York’s Attica State Prison was a symbol of everything broken in America – prisoner abuse, rampant racism and a blind eye turned towards the injustices perpetrated on the powerless. But when the guards at Attica overreacted to a minor incident, the prisoners decided they’d had enough – and revolted against their jailers, taking them hostage and making demands for humane conditions.

A natural leader, Frank “Big Black” Smith found himself at the center of this uprising, struggling to protect hostages, prisoners and negotiators alike. But when the only avenue for justice seemed to be negotiating with Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Big Black soon discovered that a peaceful resolution for the prisoners in Attica was unattainable.

The BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA Winter Book Tour stops include several locations, beginning with the New York City institution, Strand Bookstore, on February 17, to celebrate the release of the graphic memoir.

Monday, February 17, 2020, New York City NY: 7:00-8:00pm at Strand Bookstore, with special guests Daniel Meyers and Pearl “Battle” Smith, and moderator Victor LaValle, acclaimed author of The Changeling and Victor LaValle’s Destroyer

KIERON GILLEN TEAMS WITH JIM ROSSIGNOL & JEFF STOKELY FOR BERSERK IMAGE COMICS MINISERIES LUDOCRATS OUT THIS APRIL

1/28/2020

PORTLAND, Ore. 01/28/2020 — Bestselling writer Kieron Gillen (Die, The Wicked + The Divine) will team up with writer Jim Rossignol (Sir, You Are Being Hunted) and artist Jeff Stokely (The Spire) with colorist Tamra Bonvillain (Once & Future) for Ludocrats. This five-issue, gonzo-weird fantasy miniseries will launch from Image Comics on April Fools' Day.

“I have a reputation of making intense grimoires about crying,” Gillen told The Hollywood Reporter, while reclining on his throne of skulls. “This isn’t that. This is an explosion of glitter and slugs, arranged artfully, nonsense and lack of sensibility. Its aim is to make you happy. Also, horrified.”

In short: The Ludocrats! The aristocrats of ludicrous! A collision of the ornate fantasy of Dune and an M-rated Asterix & Obelix! Baron Otto Von Subertan and Professor Hades Zero-K are here, and they're going save us all have a nice time.

“I'm just happy to be implicated in whatever is happening here,” said Rossignol.

Stokely added: “Please help me. They have me trapped. Send help.”

Ludocrats #1 (Diamond Code FEB200052) will be available at comic book shops on April Fool’s Day—Wednesday, April 1. Not joking.

POPPY RETURNS TO FOUR COLOR FICTION IN Z2’S DAMNATION: POPPY’S INFERNO IN JULY 2020

Visionary Pop Culture Artist and Antihero Returns With Her Follow Up To Last Year’s Graphic Novel Debut
NEW YORK, NY—On the heels of the release of her brand-new album I Disagree on Sumerian records, and the launch of a 37 date tour to support it, Poppy announces her sophomore comic book effort, again teaming with writer Ryan Cady to pen Damnation: Poppy’s Inferno.

In Genesis 1, Poppy and writer Ryan Cady (Infinite Dark) tackled themes of influence through a dissection of the relationship of fans and enthusiasts to the art on which they cast their own hope and belief. Damnation: Poppy’s Inferno continues down this path, this time putting Poppy in a story in which there are those who literally seek to control and change her for their own purposes and leading her through the depths of hell itself. Damnation 1 trades science fiction for horror, in another thought-provoking yet satirical look at fame.

“We are delighted to work with Poppy again on her follow up to last year’s fantastic debut, Genesis 1. We believe this was one of the best books we published not only in 2019, but in our time as a publisher, and Damnation: Poppy’s Inferno  is shaping up to be all that and more” says Z2 publisher Josh Frankel.

Damnation  is fueled by the same spirit as Poppy’s new album, inspired by her quiet rise from incalculable phenomenon (with over half-a-billion views on YouTube) to unassuming paragon of high culture, high fashion, and high art, and will be released in July 2020, in both a standard and limited Z2 exclusive deluxe edition, with both available for preorder now. Damnation: Poppy’s Inferno is written by Poppy and Ryan Cady, and features art by Amilcar Pinna (Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Assassin, Valiant’s Forgotten Queen) and Zoe Thorogood.

About Z2 Comics:
Z2 is the premier destination for top quality music-based comics and graphic novels, having worked across genres to deliver an authentic experience to diverse audiences.
Some of the publisher’s best-selling books include Apocrypha: The Legend of BABYMETAL, YUNGBLUD Presents: The Twisted tales of the Ritalin Club and Eden: A Skillet Graphic Novel, alongside debut works of graphic fiction by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), Andy Biersack (Black Veil Brides), DJ Paul Oakenfold, internet sensation Poppy, jazz trumpeter Dave Chisholm and others. Z2’s upcoming works include books created with partnership with The Grateful Dead, Sturgill Simpson and others.

About Poppy:
Progression and subversion coincide.

By subverting the ideals and constructs of society, rules, and religion, progress transpires.  Poppy leverages evolution as a weapon for transformation. By doing so, she asserts herself as an anti-hero for a gender-less and genre-less world in need of a god-dess. Her quiet rise from incalculable phenomenon viewed over half-a-billion times on YouTube into unassuming paragon of high culture, high fashion, and high art extolled by everyone from HIGHSNOBIETY to Flaunt fuels her metamorphosis as “Poppy Version X.” Embodying “alternative” in the truest sense of the word, she bleeds the boundaries between pop, progressive, and electronic underpinned by unpredictable time signatures shifts and heavy edge on her third full-length and debut for Sumerian Records, I Disagree.

“In terms of doing what I wanted to in every element from start-to-finish, this feels like my first album,” she explains. “The narrative is really about destroying the things that try to destroy you.”

Throughout 2019, Poppy carefully constructed a sonic framework to do so. On the heels of her sold-out Am I a Girl? Tour, she sequestered herself in Los Angeles alongside trusted longtime collaborators Zakk Cervini, Chris Greatti, and Titanic Sinclair. They conjured the full powers of a creative spirit first summoned on “X” in 2018. Under the influence of everything from Madonna, Air, and Gary Numan to Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, she took the reins and built the album in an unfiltered and unfettered creative ecosystem of her own design, expanding the sonic palette with an arsenal of analog synths and sonic flourishes.

“I worked with Zakk, Chris, and Titanic throughout the entire process,” she recalls. “I didn’t let anybody else hear it before it was done, and I didn’t take any outside remarks. In the past, I’d go in and make a song in a day. That was fun, but we really spent days or even weeks on these new songs to make them the best they could be. That’s a lost art in music we got to explore. There’s a lot of life that gets lived during the creation of an album over ten months that gives you a different experience and perspective. ‘X’ sparked the idea of making experimental music with no rules among my friends. That was the goal. Creating Poppy Version X.”fit. You’re not thinking about rebuilding anything yet, just thinking about destruction. It feels good.”

This feeling consistently translates to audiences. As the story goes, Poppy’s internet-breaking YouTube uploads entrenched her within the cultural conversation. She levied this position to leave an indelible imprint on art at large, beginning with her 2017 full-length debut, Poppy.Computer, and followed by the sold-out Poppy Computer Tour. 2018’s Am I Girl? accelerated her rise as she once again packed houses on the subsequent headline tour as well. Along the way, she stood out as the rare talent who could collaborate with Diplo, accompany Bring Me The Horizon on an arena tour, perform at WWE: NXT, and incite conversation at New York, Paris, and Milan Fashion Week appearances. Not to mention, she received praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, and Alternative Press and appeared  on the covers of Revolver, NME, Kerrang!, and many more.

In the end, her evolution as Poppy Version X may just empower.

“When you listen to I Disagree, I hope you’re not afraid of change,” she leaves off. “It’s a non-gender specific empowerment album. Right now, I’m both thankful and sick of it all. This is Poppy Version X.” – Rick Florino, November 2019

Vault Announces New Jen Hickman Wraparound Cover for Finger Guns #1

1/28/2020

Picture
Missoula, MT (1/28/2020):  Vault Comics is thrilled to announce that FINGER GUNS #1 is receiving an additional new, wrap around C cover from star artist Jen Hickman (TEST, Jem and the Holograms).

Jen Hickman is a visual storyteller and a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design's Sequential Art program. Past work includes TEST, Moth & Whisper, Jem and the Holograms, the Femme Magnifique anthology, and more. They get really excited about dystopian fiction, good coffee, and drawing hands. Jen can be found on Patreon, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram.

Written by Justin Richards, drawn by Val Halvorson, colored by Rebecca Nalty, lettered by Taylor Esposito, and designed by Tim Daniel, FINGER GUNS is one of Vault's most talked about new 2020 series so far, having already garnered glowing early reviews, along with spotlights in The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter.

In FINGER GUNS, two troubled teenagers discover they can manipulate emotions by firing finger guns. There will be laughs. There will be tears. There will be uncomfortable teen feelings and angst. Oh yeah.. And chaos. So much chaos.

"FINGER GUNS is a deceptively brave story," says Vault Editor-in-Chief, Adrian Wassel. "It’s about kids, who have the strange ability to point their fingers at people and—bang—manipulate their emotions, but it is not a story for kids. FINGER GUNS handles some heavy themes and tough imagery with such a deft touch you could almost miss it—almost. You’ll see a young white kid running around blasting people with a finger gun that makes them powerfully angry. You’ll see a young girl of color firing a calm gun to stem the chaotic tide. You’ll see these two become friends—support each other, learn from each other, and even hurt each other, in equal measure. FINGER GUNS is a book about emotional maturity, what it takes to grow up, how few of us actually do, and the importance of harnessing compassion in an age of selfishness. Like I said, it’s deceptively brave. You’ll have so much fun, right up until you feel the tears welling."

FINGER GUNS #1 is on sale February 26th, 2020.

Discover a Brand New Series from the Highly Acclaimed Creators of the Most
Controversial Series of 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 23, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today announced that the critically acclaimed team of writer Brian Azzarello (Batman: Damned) and artist Maria Llovet (Heartbeat) will return to the world of their bestelling erotic series, FAITHLESS, with a brand new six-issue sequel series, where Faith and her lovers, Louis (AKA The Devil) and Poppy (his daughter), bring magic and chaos to the streets of Italy.

Turin, known as the epicenter of black magic, is also a place of high fashion, art, and literature. Now, Faith is in the center of it all and with that, her own power grows. But any power comes with a price. Faith has only just begun to pay for hers.

FAITHLESS II #1 features main cover art by series artist Llovet and the first in a series of erotic variant connecting covers by acclaimed artist Tula Lotay (Black Widow) that will be polybagged and not publicly previewed due to sexually explicit material. Each erotic variant cover will be limited to its initial print run and will not be reprinted or collected in any subsequent formats. All issues of FAITHLESS II will continue this variant cover program with similar content, limited release, and packaging.

Brian Azzarello is the Harvey and Eisner Award-winning co-creator (with artist Eduardo Risso) of 100 Bullets, along with Loveless and Moonshine.  The New York Times bestselling author’s work for DC Comics includes the titles Hellblazer, Superman, Joker, Luthor, Before Watchmen, Wonder Woman, and Dark Knight III with Frank Miller. Most recently he and artist Lee Bermejo launched DC’s groundbreaking Mature Readers imprint Black Label with the controversial and critically acclaimed Batman: Damned.

“I'm excited to dive back into FAITHLESS with Maria. When we last saw Faith, it appeared she'd gotten all that she'd wished for, but at what cost? Well, since the devil is involved it shouldn't be too hard to guess the price,” said Azzarello. “We're going to take Faith from the heady downtown art scene and move her to Turin, a city steeped in both black and white magic.”

Maria Llovet is a multidisciplinary artist from Barcelona, who has published four graphic novels, including Heartbeat with BOOM! Studios, There’s Nothing There, and Loud. Her illustration has been characterized by a great cinematographic influence in its visual narrative, with sex and death as central themes permeating her work.

“It was truly fantastic working with this team on Faith’s initial journey,” said Llovet. “I’m so glad to be back to these characters and thrilled to plunge deeper into the world of FAITHLESS!”

FAITHLESS II is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera;  Abbott by Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä; Bury the Lede by Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora; Folklords by Matt Kindt and Matt Smith; The Red Mother by Jeremy Haun and Danny Luckert; and the upcoming Alienated by Simon Spurrier and Chris Wildgoose and King of Nowhere by W. Maxwell Prince and Tyler Jenkins.

“Faith’s search for magic in life, in art, and in love is far from over, and delving more deeply into her journey with Brian and Maria is entirely too much fun,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “More surprises await as we invite you to sink deeper into Faith’s explorations of the ‘taboo’ in FAITHLESS II.”

Print copies of FAITHLESS II will be available for sale in April 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

Similar to the popular Tales from Vader’s Castle and Return to Vader’s Castle five-week events, every issue of Clone Wars will spotlight a different artist on interiors: Arianna Florean (issue #1), Megan Levens (#2), Valentina Pinto (#3), Davide Tinto (#4), and Philip Murphy (#5).

“The Clone Wars era is probably my favorite in all of Star Wars. It has it all – big adventure, sweeping romance, Force mythology, Jedi powers, and, of course, the awesome clones,” says Moreci. “This event series is going to bring together all the best, evergreen parts of Star Wars and weave a story that longtime fans (like myself) and new, younger readers (like my own kids) will definitely love.”

“This era of Star Wars feels so expansive and open as far as storytelling possibilities, so I’m really excited to be able to spend a good amount of time in it,” says Charm. “I’m really looking forward to finally working with Michael Moreci, as well! We’ve sort of been orbiting each other in the monthly Star Wars Adventures book for a while, but this will be our first time working together. We’ve talked about some of the things he has planned for this series, and it’s going to be pretty great.”

“Ever since it was first mentioned in A New Hope, the Clone Wars have ignited the imaginations of Star Wars fans,” says Star Wars Adventures editor Denton J. Tipton. “We are honored and excited to build upon that mythos on the shoulders of giants like Genndy Tartakovsky and Dave Filoni.”

Each issue of Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars – Battle Tales will feature covers by Derek Charm, including spot-color retailer incentive covers. An additional Retailer Incentive variant for issue #1 will be available featuring the artwork of Michael Avon Oeming (Powers, The Mice Templar).
