SAN DIEGO, CA (April 26, 2019) – The 2019 Eisner Award judges recognized IDW Publishing and its imprints, Top Shelf, Library of American Comics, Black Crown, and Artist’s Editions, with a combined twelve nods this year (ten nominations and two shared nominations). The prestigious award ceremony, held annually at Comic-Con International, honors exemplary work from the previous year in comics publishing.

IDW’s 2019 Eisner Nominees include:

  • Best Publication for Early Readers: Johnny Boo and the Ice Cream Computer, by James Kochalka (Top Shelf/IDW)
  • Best Publication for Teens: Gumballs, by Erin Nations (Top Shelf/IDW)
  • Best Anthology: Femme Magnifique: 50 Magnificent Women Who Changed the World, edited by Shelly Bond (Black Crown/IDW)
  • Best Graphic Album — New: Come Again, by Nate Powell (Top Shelf/IDW)
  • Best Graphic Album — Reprint: Girl Town, by Carolyn Nowak (Top Shelf/IDW)
  • Best Archival Collection/Project — Strips: Star Wars: Classic Newspaper Strips, Vol. 3, by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, edited by Dean Mullaney (Library of American Comics/IDW)
  • Best Archival Collection/Project — Comic Books: Bill Sienkiewicz’s Mutants and Moon Knights Artifact Edition, edited by Scott Dunbier (IDW)
  • Best Archival Collection/Project — Comic Books: Madman Quarter Century Shindig, by Mike Allred, edited by Chris Ryall, designed by Shawn Lee (IDW)
  • Best Writer/Artist: David Lapham, Lodger (Black Crown/IDW)
  • Best Writer/Artist: Nate Powell, Come Again (Top Shelf/IDW)
  • Best Academic/Scholarly Work: The Goat Getters: Jack Johnson, the Fight of the Century, and How a Bunch of Raucous Cartoonists Reinvented Comics, by Eddie Campbell (Library of American Comics/IDW/Ohio State University Press)
  • Best Lettering: Todd Klein, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest (Top Shelf/IDW)

"It's such an honor to see the Eisner judges celebrate the diverse range of graphic novels that Top Shelf has published lately — with James Kochalka celebrating the whimsical anarchy of young boys, Erin Nations introducing teens to a wide spectrum of queer and trans experience, Carolyn Nowak animating millennial womanhood with comedy and pathos, and Nate Powell exploring the dark terrors of parenting. These nominations (and these books) demonstrate the persistent truth that 'weird personal comics' can in fact be universal, because they let us see inside each other's hearts," says Leigh Walton, Top Shelf marketing director and editor.

“As we approach the landmark 200th release in the Library of American Comics, we’re proud to help preserve the history of comics one book at a time,” says creative director Dean Mullaney. “The Goat Getters especially breaks new ground in comics scholarship."

“On behalf of my Femme Magnifique co-curators, Brian and Kristy Miller, over 100 of your favorite writers and artists, and IDW, I’m honored to be in such magnificent company,” says Black Crown curator/editor Shelly Bond. “Congrats to all the Eisner nominees, especially the Laphams, who continue to crush our expectations of crime noir.”

Scott Dunbier, IDW’s Director of Special Projects, says, “Bill Sienkiewicz’s Mutants and Moon Knightscharts Bill's evolution through different stages of his career. Watching him progress from a talented new artist to a true innovator is fascinating to behold — it was an honor to work on this book, and to be nominated for an Eisner Award.”

Chris Ryall, IDW’s Publisher & President/CCO and editor on the nominated Madman Quarter Century Shindig book, added, “To directly quote Madman creator Michael Allred when notified about the nomination, this is Super Ginchy! It’s a thrill to see such diverse nominations for IDW’s equally wide-ranging output.”

The Jötunn War: A war as old as time, where fate itself hangs in the balance

NEW VIKINGVERSE GRAPHIC NOVEL, THE JÖTUNN WAR, LAUNCHES ON KICKSTARTER
The first of a four-issue graphic novel brings Norse history to life this March
TOPEKA, KANSAS (March 22, 2019)— The Jötunn War, a brand-new addition to the Vikingverse universe created by Ian Stuart Sharpe, launches on Kickstarter on March 22, 2019. The first of a four-issue graphic novel series and a follow up of Sharpe‘s debut novel The All Father Paradox, The Jötunn War is an alternate universe where the Norse rule the stars with restless fleets and an iron will. When the thralls rebel, turning to the artifice of Norns to help them escape their bondage, the Natural order is thrown into chaos, causing a war that will rage across the Nine Homeworlds. Will the thrall rebellion change the Norse way of life? Or will the Empire crush them with flame and fury?

“When we first acquired The All Father Paradox, I knew the Vikingverse setting had so much potential for trans-media storytelling,” said Outland Entertainment‘s Editor-in-Chief, Alana Joli Abbott. “To see the first comic coming into fruition is truly exciting—and while it stands alone, readers of the novel will get extra insight into some mysterious characters…”

“It‘s been a real delight to see the stories we started telling in The All Father Paradox take on a visceral urgency in comic form,” explained Vikingverse creator Ian Stuart Sharpe. “Norse mythology is a fascinating lens through which to take a view of the world. History is full of titanic battles, from David vs. Goliath to the Axis vs. Allies, but The Jötunn War is literally as big as it gets.”

The Kickstarter will support the printing and distribution of the graphic novel‘s completed first issue. Other stretch goals include upgrades of printing specs, such as a glossier cover and higher quality paper, and finally the ability to fund the printing and distribution of the second graphic novel set in the Vikingverse.

ABOUT IAN STUART SHARPE
Ian Stuart Sharpe was born in London, UK, and now lives in British Columbia, Canada. Having worked for the BBC, IMG, Atari and Electronic Arts, he is now CEO of a tech start up. Vault Comics Rebuilds the Night Sky with SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS

Missoula, MT (04/23/2019): Vault Comics is thrilled to announce SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS, a stunning new fantasy epic comic book series written by Jon Tsuei (Run Love Kill), drawn by Audrey Mok (Archie, Josie & The Pussycats), colored by Raúl Angulo (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), lettered by Jim Campbell (Wasted Space), and designed by Tim Daniel.

Civil war rages in the Empire of Parsa, and famine has struck. As the seasons refuse to turn, Princess Sera receives a vision from the deity Mitra telling her to find the Royal Stars and restore them to the heavens. Despite her kingdom and her troops’ need of her command, Sera embarks on a quest to find the fallen stars—now trapped on earth—and save her people from dearth and death.

SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #1
hits store shelves in July 2019.

ADRIAN WASSEL, VAULT'S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, ON SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS:
"Sera and the Royal Stars is the kind of fantasy story we (and I do mean all of us—creators, editors, publishers, retailers) were told for years was too grand in scope to market in comics. Which, of course, was absolute nonsense. Saga alone obliterated that previously held misconception. And a little lesbian Viking comic I happen to love deeply—yes, Heathen—also did its part tearing down walls. But I think, following the success of those titles and others, the truth of the matter emerged: High fantasy, epics of all sorts, aren’t too grand for the medium. That’s absurd. They’re just really dang difficult to make well. Enter Sera and the Royal Stars, a high fantasy quest blending dozens of Asian mythologies that somehow made me feel like I was re-watching my favorite episodes of Avatar, while re-reading my favorite issues of Monstress, with a hero I cared about so deeply I was twelve again discovering a book (it was Bone for me then) that felt like it had existed forever, and would exist forever, whose characters were so rich I’d think of them as secret friends of mine right up until the day I keeled over.

So yeah, I took a long time getting to where I should have started: I love this series. I love this series so much that sometimes I forget it’s new—that the rest of the world hasn’t just been reading it and loving it for decades.

"VAULT VINTAGE VARIANT COVER"
SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #1 will receive a Vault Vintage variant cover honoring the work of Natasha Alterici and her smash-hit, YALSA nominated Vault Comic series, HEATHEN. The Vault Vintage cover is drawn by Nathan Gooden and designed by Tim Daniel.

"The striking issue #1 cover of Natasha Alterici’s Heathen, depicting Aydis poised in bold defiance, left an indelible mark upon readers, and helped Vault drive a stake into the ground (and heart) of comics," says Tim Daniel, Vault's VP of Design & Brand.

“The launch of Jon Tsuei & Audrey Mok’s Sera and the Royal Stars coincides with the return of Aydis. When Audrey's art arrived in our offices, it was immediately clear that Sera would join the ranks of other powerful icons such as She Said Destroy's Morrigan, Queen of Bad Dreams’ Inspector Daher, and of course Heathen's Aydis." says Daniel.

“A star is born, indeed.”

The All-New B-Squad from Starburns Industries Press is Now Available for Pre-Order!

Picture
Burbank, CA –  STARBURNS INDUSTRIES PRESS ADDS “B-SQUAD” TO SUMMER LINEUP

As it heads into its sophomore year of publishing, Starburns Industries Press sets it’s eyes on remastering an independent series, B-Squad, from indie darling author Eben Burgoon and a rotating roster illustrators and artists that change issue to issue. B-Squad shares the ridiculous and dangerous missions of an expendable team of misfit mercenaries ranging from pop-culture riffs to cut from whole cloth oddballs. The bargain-bin commandos tackle leftover assignments of other more respected mercenary groups.
Picture

SBI Press’ run begins with a remaster of the series debut “Conspiracy in Cambodia”, originally independently published in 2013. Written by Burgoon and illustrated by Lauren Monardo, B-Squad is tasked with protecting a free-range cadre of “mugwai” from a group of radicalized hipsters who poach the furry critters for unknown gain. Series creator, Eben Burgoon, comments “I seriously can’t think of a better home for B-Squad than SBI Press. Bringing this passion project of mine to a creative-focused publisher that has a track record for making undeniably extraordinary work in so many mediums is a pinch-me caliber dream.”

Illustrator Michael Calero returns to B-Squad to take over as the series’ Artistic Lead for Starburns Industries Press’ run. Calero previously contributed to B-Squad’s sixth book in 2015 and returns to create all-new covers and contribute to an all-new second mission. Additionally, he’ll also be debuting his own creator-owned comic, Monster Safari, as a back-up story to B-Squad beginning with Mission One.

“Monster Safari fits perfectly into what SBI Press and Eben are crafting with the B-Squad format. To get the offer to come back to B-Squad and also have this comedy adventure story I’d wanted to create just felt really serendipitous. To get to do both in the same book is really exciting.” said Calero.

Picture
Design by Michael Calero
In the spirit of a Saturday morning cartoon block, each B-Squad book serves as home for brand new tangential comics like Calero’s “Monster Safari” and “Tiny Wizards” Burgoon’s newest creation, with art by Dean Beattie, about six-inch-tall wizards trapped in the fast-food culture of a remote truck stop. The remastered books are rounded out with activities, puzzles, and bonus content in homage to dentist office staples like Highlights magazine and ZooBooks. “B-Squad is all about change, but one thing that won’t change is my commitment to chaotic random death determined by a die roll.” maintains Burgoon. In each story, the author spins an antique six-sided top to determine which squadmate will be killed off permanently and replaced with a new rookie in the each subsequent book.

“B-Squad is the exact kind of work we want to be publishing at SBI — funny, irreverent, genre-mashing, action-packed, and, above all, unexpected.” adds Trevor Richardson, SBI Press’ VP of Acquisition, “We are looking forward to a long creative partnership with Eben and Michael as they join us in experimenting with storytelling and medium through an entire team of weirdos for hire.”

The first 48+ page giant size book will also be available in local comic shops and is available to pre-order through Diamond Previews and select online retailers. The debut issue is currently scheduled for the second week of July 2019. A preview of B-Squad will be available in Free Comic Book Day 2019's edition of Starburns Presents from SBI Press, check with your local comic shop for more information!

Picture
“Starburns Industries Press has a mantra that their projects should be beautiful, strange, sad, and funny... and that might be my first tattoo.” considers Burgoon.

Follow SBI Press on Facebook and Twitter for more updates on B-Squad, Monster Safari, and Tiny Wizards from Eben Burgoon, Dean Beattie, and Michael Calero.
 HOW TO GET B-SQUAD
B-Squad is currently on pre-order through Diamond Comics Distributors. Place your order through your local comic shop using order code APR191949. To find your nearest comic shop, visit comicshoplocator.com!
