A New, Meticulously-Researched Hardcover from IDW Imprint Yoe Books
Presents the Life Stories and Rare Masterpieces of the
Black Artists Who Shaped the Industry

SAN DIEGO, CA (December 15, 2020) – During the formative years of the comic book industry, talented Black artists worked behind-the-scenes to create thrilling tales of superheroes, horror, and romance. Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books, a new hardcover book by comics historian Ken Quattro, is a riveting exploration of this little-known history, published by Yoe Books, an IDW imprint, and debuting today.

Using primary source material from World War II-era Black newspapers and magazines, this compelling book profiles pioneers like E.C. Stoner, a renowned fine artist of the Harlem Renaissance and the first Black artist to draw comic books; Owen Middleton, whose life sentence in Sing Sing became a cause célèbre championed by historian Will Durant, leading both to freedom and a career in comics; Matt Baker, who drew Vooda, the first groundbreaking Black comic book hero; and many more. Each man's personal struggles and triumphs are represented as they broke through into an industry formerly occupied only by whites.

Gorgeously illustrated with rare examples of each artist's work, Invisible Men features Ken Quattro's impeccable research of the social and cultural environments in which these extraordinary men lived and worked, plus full stories from mainstream comic books, rare reprints from titlles including All-Negro Comics and Negro Heroes, and unpublished artist's photos.

“The Black artists profiled in this book lived and worked among the white population but remained unseen and unknown to those same people. My research, taken mostly from sources within the contemporaneous Black media, was for me both revealing and humbling. I hope that by sharing these revelations, others will be inspired,” says Quattro.

“Ken Ouattro's engrossing writing, based on over two decades of impeccable research, finally gives foundational black comic artists their due. This unknown but vital part of comics history which Ken has so stunningly revealed will make the timely Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books one of the most talked about and important books of the comics field,” says Yoe Books editor, Craig Yoe.

Early reviews from Quattro’s peers in the arena of comics history have been overwhelmingly positive, and include:

“An indispensable contribution to the history of American comics, for fans and scholars alike.” — Qiana Whitted, editor of Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies, and author of EC Comics: Race, Shock, and Social Protest

“A long neglected chapter of comic book history brought to light by a master scribe!” — Prof. William H. Foster III, comic book historian and author of Looking For A Face Like Mine

"The book is a revelation because of the sheer number of talented artists Quattro has discovered, and it's a memorial because of his meticulous research, which he has used to document the lives and accomplishments of a generation of barely- to completely-unknown Black comics artists." —Calvin Reid, senior news editor of Publishers Weekly and co-editor of PW Comics World

"Dogged research and choice archival reprints make this volume an essential reference for pop culture history. Eighteen African American comics creators receive overdue hero treatment in this collection that documents their essential roles in the rise of graphic pulp literature within the struggle for Black equality in postwar America." — Publishers Weekly

"This is the most complete list of Black Golden Age artists I've ever seen, complete with photos and examples of their work… a crucial historical document." — Reginald Hudlin, Producer/Director

”A timely and information-packed book giving tribute to a host of unsung Black creators of fabulous four-color art and comics." — Karen Green, curator for Comics and Cartoons, Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Columbia University

"Invisible Men highlights forgotten yet essential figures in our industry. Bravo to Mr. Quattro for finally giving them their due." — Keith Knight, Creator of The K Chronicles and Woke

Online class kicks off on Jan. 14, 2021
Art by Dan Parent92Y and Archie Comics are collaborating on a new, online comic book class for kids, “Create Your Own Comic Book,” featuring legendary and award-winning Archie writer/artist, Dan Parent, as the instructor.

In the four-week class, kids ages 9-13 will learn to draw, write, and create their own comic book— and explore Archie Comics’ iconic characters, Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica, Josie, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and more. Participants will familiarize themselves with the characters and style via copies of the comic book.

The class, offered at $200, is the latest addition to 92Y’s Virtual Afterschool program, which was launched in September; it brings together two organizations with New York roots.

“I can’t think of a better way to introduce kids to the world of comic books and illustrating than through the eyes and ears of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica and the Riverdale gang,” said Lauren Wexler, 92Y Afterschool Director. “For many of us growing up, those richly drawn fictional characters and the world they inhabited served as an introduction to teenage life – friendship, romance, and the adventures and challenges that define what it means to be a teenager. We’re so excited to collaborate with an iconic comic book brand in this endeavor.”

The Archie Comics line of comic books is one of the most successful, longest running brands in the history of the comic industry. Archie Comics have sold 2 billion comics and are published in a dozen different foreign languages and distributed all over the world. Archie Comics has spawned characters whose popularity have spilled over into other media and who have become part of popular culture.

“Archie Comics are, and always will be, for everyone – from age seven to seventy. Partnering with an institution like 92Y and having Dan teach some of the amazing lessons he’s mastered over his legendary career is just another example of that,” said Archie Comics Co-President, Alex Segura. “We’re excited to engage and help foster the next generation of Archie Comics fans and creators while also providing some educational entertainment during these very challenging times.”

Discover The Brand New Original Horror Series in March 2021
UCP, a Division of Universal Studio Group, To Adapt Graphic Novel Series for Television

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 14, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today announced PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD #1, kicking off a star-studded new horror limited series from visionary writer Grant Morrison (Klaus), Alex Child (BBC’s Holby City), Naomi Franquiz (Tales from Harrow County) and Tamra Bonvillain (Once & Future) about the mysterious monsters that haunt Proctor Valley Road - and the four misfit teenagers who must stop them. PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD, developed in partnership with NBCUniversal, debuts in comic shops on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. NBCUniversal’s UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, will also adapt the series for television and will shop the adaptation to networks and streaming platforms.

August, Rylee, Cora & Jennie have organized a “Spook Tour” with their classmates on the most haunted, demon-infested stretch of road in America to fund attending the concert of their dreams. But when their visit turns deadly, these four friends race to rescue the missing students...before the town tears them limb from limb. Now they must slay the evils roaming Proctor Valley Road...along with the monsters lurking in the hearts of 1970s America.

Grant Morrison has written best-selling stories for Marvel and DC Comics, creating definitive runs for iconic characters including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Justice League of America, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Seminal titles in comics include Batman: Arkham Asylum, All-Star Superman, Animal Man, The Invisibles, WE3, Joe the Barbarian, and Doom Patrol.

In television, Morrison developed and co-wrote a number of shows under a development deal for UCP at NBCUniversal. These include the hit show Happy! for SYFY in 2017, based on the comic book, and an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World for Peacock in 2020. A long-anticipated adaptation of the epic ‘90s series The Invisibles is currently in development. In film, Morrison recently co-wrote The Flash for Warner Bros. with Ezra Miller.

“I fell in love with these characters when I read Alex's original series proposal and I've had an amazing time working with him and with Naomi to bring them to life for a spooky rollercoaster ride that feels like Nancy Drew on 'shrooms!” said Grant Morrison. “Get your kicks...on Proctor Valley Road!”

Alex Child is a British screenwriter from Oxfordshire known for his work on BBC's Holby City and Sky One's Temple.  Child's upcoming debut short film Small World, which he wrote and directed, stars Dr. Who's David Troughton and Peter Wight of Hot Fuzz fame.

“I'm thrilled to be teaming up with the mighty Grant Morrison and the insanely talented Naomi Franquiz on my debut comic book, PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD!” said Alex Child. “With the hangover of the 1960s in the rearview, the Vietnam War dragging on, and the Space Race hotting up, we're in small town supernatural America to tell the story of four best friends, three missing jocks, and a real life stretch of road steeped in legends that will ice your spine and leave the blood thumping in your ears. The girls' reputations, friendship, and lives are all on the line in this white-knuckle adventure series as they try to unravel the mysteries and survive the nightmarish terrors of Proctor Valley Road, a place that makes Hell look like Honolulu!”

Naomi Franquiz is a Latina freelance illustrator and comic book artist currently based in delightfully dank Florida. She focuses on diverse and inclusive character-driven narratives that explore concepts such as found family, identity, and independence. Previous works include Tales From Harrow County: Death's Choir (Dark Horse), Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (Marvel), and Bountiful, a short story in the ELEMENTS: Earth comics anthology. She is perhaps best known for her expressive character work, and perhaps less known for her inability to ride a standard bicycle.

“PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD is a big slice of Americana laced with uneasy cryptid horror, a side of rebel youth, and a killer soundtrack,” said Naomi Franquiz.

Print copies of PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD #1, for mature readers, will be available on March 3, 2021 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the one nearest you) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers like comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire. The issue also features main cover art by Franquiz, along with variant covers from superstars Chris Wildgoose (Alienated), Christian Ward (Invisible Kingdom), and Peach Momoko (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

“Grant, Alex, and Naomi have created a kind of horror in PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD that is both beyond imagination and terrifyingly real,” said Eric Harburn, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Coming of age during the death of ‘peace & love,’ our heroines must not only conquer the evils spawned from this cursed desert highway, but the demons we all see when we look in the mirror and stare up at the ceiling at night.”

New 64-Page Monthly Anthology Series Spotlights New Creative Voices and Ties Into Some of the Biggest Events in Gotham

Batman may be the biggest name in Gotham City, but there are lots of other heroes—and villains—who will get a turn to shine in Batman: Urban Legends, a brand-new monthly anthology series highlighting top talent and a mix of new voices making their mark on the city the Dark Knight calls home.

The first six issues are anchored by a Batman/Red Hood thriller from writer Chip Zdarsky (Detective Comics #1027, Dark Nights: Death Metal Guidebook #1) and fan-favorite artist Eddy Barrows (Detective Comics, Freedom Fighters, Future State: Robin Eternal). Renegade vigilante Jason Todd, a.k.a. Red Hood is investigating a new and lethal drug sweeping through Gotham City. In the course of one night, this investigation will change his life forever – and put him in Batman’s crosshairs.

Future State: Grifters writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Ryan Benjamin continue from the pages of Batman #101, as gun-for-hire Cole Cash is still in Gotham, on the trail of the true motives of the Halo Corporation…and yes, Batman and Grifter go head-to-head again!

In a story set before the launch of the new ongoing Harley Quinn series, writer Stephanie Phillips and Future State: The Next Batman artist Laura Braga team up to help Harley sort out her complicated history with Poison Ivy – but first she’ll have to find her!

This debut issue also launches a three-part tale of the Outsiders, courtesy of Future State: Outsiders writer Brandon Thomas with art by Max Dunbar (Marvel’s Champions, Dungeons and Dragons, Judge Dredd). Writer Chris Miskiewicz and Artist Michael Schelfer set to Collaborate on the Official Original Graphic Novel in Celebration of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll
NEW YORK, NY – December 11, 2020 — Z2 Comics and Authentic Brands Group (ABG), a global brand development, marketing, and entertainment company and owner of the Elvis Presley Estate, today announced an all-new original graphic novel that captures the amazing story of one of the most celebrated performers of all time: Elvis Presley. The book is available for pre-order in multiple editions now, including a limited-edition oversized hardcover accompanied by a new compilation album from Sony Music, mirroring the story through the musician’s own early output that came to define American rock and roll.

Elvis: The Graphic Novel will follow the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s humble beginnings in Memphis as a young artist struggling to find his voice and break into the music industry. From the history-making Sun Studio to television sets across the nation, the trials and tribulations of Elvis Aaron Presley are illustrated in graphic detail by author Chris Miskiewicz (Grateful Dead: Origins, This Is Where We Fall) and Marvel Comics artist Michael Shelfer.

“Elvis is one of the most universally celebrated names in entertainment,” says Z2 publisher, Josh Frankel. “His name transcends music itself as one of the larger-than-life figures in the history of pop culture. We hope to make this graphic novel an origin story for Elvis fans akin to what Alan Moore’s Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is for the Son of Krypton.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Z2 Comics on the release of Elvis: The Graphic Novel, written by the brilliant Chris Miskiewicz and illustrated by the exceptional Michael Shelfer,” said Marc Rosen, EVP Entertainment, Authentic Brands Group. “We are confident that fans of all ages will connect with the story and be delighted by the visual content.”

Z2 COMICS AND RICO NASTY ANNOUNCE ALL-NEW COMIC BOOK TIE-IN TO HER MAJOR LABEL DEBUT,
NIGHTMARE VACATION!

Rising Rap Star Cowrites Her First Ever Comic Book Set in the Fictional Lead Up to Her Debut Album On Sale Now!

NEW YORK, NY—Z2 Comics reveal the latest in a string of anticipated comic debuts, this time from the DMV’s punk rock princess, currently stacking glowing reviews for her latest album like presents under a tree, each one better than the last. The album – which includes features from such luminaries as Trippie Redd and Aminé and production also by Take A Daytrip (Lil Nas X, Sheck Wes, Kid Cudi), Avedon (Roddy Ricch, Chloe x Halle),  GRAMMY® Award-nominee Tay Keith (Travis Scott, BlocBoy JB, Drake) and longtime collaborator Kenny Beats – is highlighted by the singles, “IPHONE,” “Own It,” “Don’t Like Me (Feat. Don Toliver & Gucci Mane),” and “OHFR?,” all available now for streaming and download. To celebrate the release of NIGHTMARE VACATION, Rico has unveiled a brand new merch line, including the original comic book co-written with Jarrett Williams (Harper Sharp, Super Pro K.O.!), with two different covers available to order now!

Rico Nasty says “I’m excited about my very own comic book. I just want my fans to come on this adventure with me. It’s Nightmare Vacation in rare form.”

Rico Nasty is deep in space recording her debut album. Unfortunately, an accidental cannabis nap sends her spaceship, CAM, crashing onto Earth! Waking up at a soulless android facility, she’ll have to survive on noodles while searching for her missing ship—but at least she has the help of her new, dope girlfriends, Taco Bella & Trap Levigne. Together, they’ll battle countless androids while trying to find CAM and finish her new album.

Indeed, Rico Nasty has been among the most prolific artists in recent memory, with a seemingly endless stream of standout singles like “Hard,” “Time Flies” (featured on EA’s hugely successful Madden NFL 20), and “Fashion Week,” the latter joined by an official video chronicling her own high profile appearances at 2019’s New York Fashion Week, streaming HERE. As if all that weren’t enough, Rico has contributed to an array of features and remixes, including an acclaimed “NastyMix” of the late Pop Smoke's viral hit "Welcome To The Party" and 100 gecs’ hugely popular “ringtone (remix) [feat. Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, Kero Kero Bonito].”

Rico Nasty: Nightmare Vacay is released today in two versions, each individually exclusive to the Z2 website and Rico Nasty’s webstore, Nightmare Vacay is a fun companion to Rico’s brand-new album, Nightmare Vacation, which was released on December 5 through Atlantic Records/Sugar Trap!
