Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band Offers a Unique Perspective on the Civil Rights Movement of Indigenous People

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with the
Critically Acclaimed Graphic Memoir from IDW

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 20, 2020) – The intriguing history of the high-flying rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Redbone is beautifully presented in IDW‘s powerful graphic novel, Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band, recently released and timed perfectly with November’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

Created in cooperation with Redbone founder Pat Vegas, authors Christian Staebler and Sonia Paoloni and artist Thibault Balahy take painstaking steps to ensure the historical accuracy of this important and often overlooked story of America's past — from the creation of the first rock ‘n’ roll band made up of all Native Americans and founded by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas, to the incorporation of tribal beats into chart-topping rock music and popular culture, to the members of the band taking a stand for their ancestry over continued commercial reward. Part biography and part research journalism, Redbone tells a vivid story about this neglected chapter of American history.

Pat Vegas says, “Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Group is a true story that I put a lot of time into sharing my history, the history of Redbone, and our people. You get a lot more personal with me, and I think you’ll love it. This book is not just for Native Americans, it’s for everyone. It won’t just mean a lot to me but a lot to you, too.”

In addition to the English language release of Redbone, IDW has welcomed the graphic novel into its Spanish Language publishing initiative, expanding the accessibility of this culturally and politically important story to Spanish-speaking communities throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Staebler, Paoloni, and Balahy’s moving tribute to the groundbreaking rock band has been a critical favorite since its release in late October. A selection of quotes from critics include:

"Compelling reading for fans of roots rock and Native American history in middle school and up." — School Library Journal

"An entertaining, enlightening history for music fans. Balahy’s loose, energetic drawings; imaginative layouts; and playful use of color make everything pop." — Publishers Weekly

"Musicians with heart put their people before profits in an inspirational tale. Well-researched and well-paced, this book will introduce a new generation to the music and impact of Redbone." — Kirkus Reviews (Starred review)

"In some eyes, the guys in Redbone, still the most successful Native American rock band this country has produced, are indeed superheroes. Not all heroes wear capes, and some wear buckskin." — Houston Chronicle

"Staebler and Paoloni offer a lens onto aspects of the twentieth-century Native American struggle for civil rights and injustices like forced schooling and racist policing, as well as the 1968 birth of the American Indian Movement. Balahy's art is particularly splendid and well-varied in style for the complex subject matter." — Booklist

"Relates a compelling story extending much farther than solely rock music. Redbone the book enlightens readers both musically and culturally." — People's World

“Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band represents the strength of graphic novels to package engaging, socially relevant stories into a highly accessible format, and a proud addition to our growing library of critically acclaimed titles,” says Justin Eisinger, Editorial Director, Graphic Novels & Collections for IDW Publishing. “While unspooling the band’s incredible story at the heart of West Coast rock n’ roll, this unlikely collaboration between Vegas and Staebler effortlessly contextualizes events in American history that many readers may find surprising. Yet Redbone rolls from cover to cover with the driving rhythm of passion and purpose born of seasoned musical prowess.”

IDW Previews Five Glorious Pages of Wild West Weirdness from Chained to the Grave Comic Book Series!

An Original Tale of Intrigue, Murder, and Magic
for Mature Audiences Debuts in February

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 19, 2020) – From the creative team of co-writers Brian Level (Darth Vader, Thanos, Deadpool) and Andy Eschenbach (Heavy Metal Magazine, Red Shoes) and artist Kate Sherron (Invader Zim, The Amazing World of Gumball) comes Chained to the Grave, a five-issue comic book series of Old West action -- with a wholly unique visual style and supernatural weirdness aplenty!

In anticipation of February’s #1 issue launch, IDW is proud to debut the opening scene of this mature-themed miniseries for all the world to enjoy.

Outlaw Roy Mason has come back from the dead, chained to the headstone that marked his grave. It’s a lawless time, a magical time, and the undead Roy finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place as he sets out in search of treasure. But Roy, trying to do right by the wife and children he left behind, soon finds out that everything is not always as it seems…

“The process of making Chained to the Grave has been a great pleasure,” says Level. “With Andy's weird genius and Kate's singular and luminous art, I've had a hand in creating one of the more unorthodox westerns on the market. For such a rotten guy, Roy Mason has brought us along for a pretty magical ride!”

“Brian and I really set out to make something strange and fun with the pieces of something familiar, and Kate’s pen just amplifies that notion. It’s got all the things you’d want from a Western romp, but it toys with those tropes, focusing on the blast radius of Roy Mason’s bad decisions, all through the vivid lens of Kate’s amazing style,” says Eschenbach.

“I love a good Western, but I loathe the usual Western palette — tan, brown, the occasional khaki green... I’d really rather not,” says Sherron. “I can’t thank Brian and Andy enough for crafting this wild story where cowpokes and color happily coexist on the page.”

Chained to the Grave #1 will feature two cover editions for fans to enjoy: Cover A by Kate Sherron and a Retailer Incentive edition by Brian Level.

For information on how to acquire copies of Chained to the Grave, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Discover a Spooktacular New Series About a Group of Friends in Search of the Paranormal
Picture
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 19, 2020) –  BOOM! Studios is proud to announce SPECTER INSPECTORS, a new original five-issue series in February 2021, from comics creators Bowen McCurdy (The Long Way Home) and rising star Kaitlyn Musto, about a group of social media savvy ghost hunters who seek out supernatural hot spots in order to answer the ultimate question. . . are ghosts even real?!

True believer Noa, her cynical little sibling Gus, credulous camera man Ko, and Noa’s skeptical best friend (and secret crush) Astrid head to one of the most haunted towns in America to prove that ghosts exist, for all the social media likes! The investigations of hauntings uncover something more devilish than just a couple of ghosts, something that will put Noa and Astrid’s relationship to the test… and reveal the centuries-old sinister secrets of the town itself.

Bowen McCurdy is a cartoonist and writer from New York City. She graduated with a degree in cartooning from School of Visual Arts in 2018, and has self-published many short comics, as well as illustrated a short story for IDW and Marvel. This is her first graphic novel.

"This book is everything I wanted to read when I was young; queer characters on adventures, ghosts, romance, and only a handful of demons. The story is based on one of the first comics I ever did, so it has a big place in my heart. I fell in love with the SPECTER INSPECTORS while writing them, and even more so while bringing them to life through art. I'm so excited to share them with you!" said McCurdy.

Kaitlyn Musto is a cartoonist & writer from New York City. She attended School of Visual Arts and graduated in 2018. Since then, she has been working on various projects including co-writing a graphic novel with fellow cartoonist, Bowen McCurdy, creating character sprites for a fan project, and working on the pitch for her own historical fiction adventure graphic novel. You can find her work at her website katkomix.com, as well as on Instagram and Twitter @katkomix.

“SPECTER INSPECTORS is an exciting mix of paranormal shenanigans, cryptic mysteries, and a queer love story to give you the warm fuzzies—after all the horror,” said Musto. “I’m ecstatic to be able to finally share this ghostly adventure with the world. Working on this story has been an amazing ride, and I hope readers fall in love with the Specter Inspectors cast as I did writing them.”

SPECTER INSPECTORS  is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Ghosted in LA by Sina Grace and Siobhan Keenan; The Avant-Guards by Carly Usdin and Noah Hayes; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad; Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams; and Seen: True Stories of Marginalized Trailblazers.

“Who doesn’t love a misfit group of supernatural skeptics and true believers running into danger, solving mysteries, and falling in love while hot on the trail of this year’s trendiest ghosts?” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Bowen and Kaitlyn have brought the incredibly loveable cast of SPECTER INSPECTORS and their ghost hunting adventures to life, and we can’t wait for readers to join in on the fun next year!”

Print copies of the oversized SPECTER INSPECTORS #1, featuring more than 30 story pages, will be available for sale in February 2021 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! The genre bending series by Grant Morrison now available for the first time in paperback and featuring
a new special introduction by
Christopher Meloni!
Picture
LOS ANGELES, November 18, 2020 – Legendary Comics announced today that Eisner nominated ANNIHILATOR is now available for the first time in softcover in bookstores and online retailers. This exciting print edition of the original graphic novel odyssey hailing from the subversive mind of Grant Morrison (Animal Man, Batman, All Star Superman, Fantastic Four, Happy!) is a compilation of the six-issue series featuring interiors and new alternate covers by Frazer Irving (Batman and Robin, Judge Dredd, Necronauts). Fans will relish in this paperback edition that also features a new introduction by actor Christopher Meloni as well as bonus materials on the making of the comic. Annihilator, which garnered a prestigious Eisner Award ‘Best Writer’ nomination for Morrison, is the reality-bending sci-fi adventure like no other, brought to life with stunning artwork from Irving.

Washed-up Hollywood screenwriter Ray Spass is caught in a downward spiral of broken relationships, wild parties and self-destruction. Out of luck and out of chances, he's one failed script away from fading into obscurity. Little does he know he's about to write the story of his life. As his imagination runs rampant, Ray must join forces with his own fictional character Max Nomax on a reality-bending race to stop the entire universe from imploding... without blowing his own mind in the process.

“We are thrilled to dive back into this space and give Annihilator fans new art and materials to discover more about the process behind the characters and world created by Grant and Frazer,” said Robert Napton, Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics.

Grant Morrison remarks, “Annihilator is a personal favourite of mine - written to showcase the unique, incredible artwork of Frazer Irving, and as a love letter to the larger-than-life characters and witchy, diabolical undercurrents of Los Angeles and Hollywood, my beloved second home! I hope this softcover collection attracts a whole new audience to our tale of black holes, love betrayed, guerrilla screenwriting, and dodgy deals with the devil!”

In his introduction, Meloni writes: “here is the master storyteller exercising (exorcising?) his restless mind, his demanding imagination and bringing gothic horror sci fi present day futuristic mind bend time bend anti-hero saga...and I know I left a half dozen descriptors out.”

These include the hit show “HAPPY!” for SYFY in 2017, based on their comic book, and an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World for Peacock in 2020. A long-anticipated adaptation of their epic ‘90s series “The Invisibles” is currently in development. In film, they recently co-wrote The Flash for Warner Bros with Ezra Miller. In 2011, their experience and insight into the myths and traditions of comics resulted in the release of the New York Times bestseller book, Supergods, a groundbreaking psycho-historic mapping of the superhero as a cultural organism.  In 2012 Morrison was awarded an MBE for services to film and literature. Barely educated at Mosspark Primary and Allan Glen's School for Boys, Morrison now lives and works between homes in Glasgow, Scotland and Los Angeles. In this time he has worked on titles such as Batman, the X-Men, Iron Man, as well as a wide range of sci-fi stories in the pages of 2000AD. Originally a devoted user of the sable brush, upon discovering computers at Portsmouth University he became a pioneer of early digital comicbook illustration, and since 2006 has produced all of his work in the world of the magic window that is his cintiq or iPad. As well as these talents, Frazer is also a composer of music, and a dreamer of dreams.

Discover a New Type of Quest Where the Sidekicks Become the Heroes in February 2021

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 18, 2020) –  BOOM! Studios today announced an all-new original six-issue comic book series, ORCS! by cartoonist Christine Larsen (Adventure Time, By Night), about a band of misfit Orcs who set off into the great, wide Known World in search of glory and gold but find that the real treasures were the friends they made along the way.

The Adventure Starts Here! Join Bog and his crew, who were banished from their Orcish village by King Hrograhgah (it was a simple misunderstanding, involving an acorn-related prank!) and must now venture out into the world to seek their fortune and hopefully, one day, find their way back home again! Bog, Zep, Pez, Utzu and Gurh’s many adventures will find them entering the dreaded Eerieasallhel Forest, facing off against Trolls, Gnomes, squirrels and more, and even following in the footsteps of the legendary Orc hero, Dod One-Eye!

Christine Larsen is a Harvey Award-nominated cartoonist and Illustrator from Philadelphia, PA,  who creates art for comics, book covers, stories, posters and albums. She has worked with clients such as Dark Horse, Image Comics, IDW, BOOM! Studios, DC Online, and Simon & Schuster. In addition to numerous self published ventures, she is co-creator with John Allison on By Night! from Boom! Studios and has illustrated many licensed stories, including Samurai Jack from IDW and Adventure Time from BOOM! Studios. Larsen is also an adjunct instructor at the University of the Arts Philadelphia where she teaches illustration and comics.

“ORCS! is dedicated to everyone who’s taken an arrow from the hero, who wasn’t more than a nameless menace in the story, who didn’t have the looks for the main role—the quirky sidekicks, goofy henchmen, and army of lackeys,” said Larsen. “Goons are heroes, too!”

ORCS! is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including original series Just Beyond by R.L. Stine and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, Hex Vet by Sam Davies, Drew and Jot by Art Baltazar, Hotel Dare by Terry Blas and Claudia Aguirre, RuinWorld by Derek Laufman,  and Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard and Kelly & Nichole Matthews.

“Christine Larsen brings a wicked sense of humor and incredibly fun illustrations to this series about the misunderstood characters from your typical fantasy quest finally getting a chance to step up and be the heroes of their own story,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “If you’ve ever played Dungeons & Dragons, read a fantasy novel, or played an online quest and wondered about all the characters left in the dust, ORCS! is the story you’ve been waiting for.”

Print copies of ORCS! #1 will be available for sale in February 2021 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

CHICAGO, IL— Independent Publishers Group (IPG) is pleased to announce their partnership with TOKYOPOP, the publishing arm of POP Media Holdings and the company that established the market for manga in North America, introducing the term to the English language.

Beginning January 1, 2021, TOKYOPOP will expand its English language trade distribution through IPG, including retail book and mass merchant accounts. TOKYOPOP will continue to partner with Diamond Comics to work directly with comic book retailers and expand its offerings within the direct market comic books channel.

“IPG is one of the leading book distribution companies, which not only boasts a rich 50 year history, but at the same time is very innovative, utilizing advanced data collection and reporting methodology,” said TOKYOPOP CEO Stu Levy. "We expect to expand not only our retail network, but also direct-to-consumer initiatives, digital publishing, and print-on-demand services. Coming out of 2020 and the repercussions of the global COVID pandemic, we believe 2021 is going to be an exciting year!"

Over its history, TOKYOPOP has published thousands of books, distributed anime and Asian films on home video and television, licensed merchandise to consumer goods companies, created graphic novels of major brands, and led the way digitally in social media, e-commerce, and user-generated content.

A part of this joint distribution includes TOKYOPOP’s 2021 launch of the new RESIDENT EVIL manga and graphic novels line, both digitally and in print, across multiple formats. Laughing Under the Clouds, a highly rated fantasy manga series set in ancient Japan, will also release in early 2021. Additionally, new Disney Manga titles with TOKYOPOP include an upcoming original The Nightmare Before Christmas story to follow up with its The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey series; a brand-new Descendants story; Stitch and the Samurai, a crossover between an ancient Japanese samurai story and the popular Disney character Stitch; and a color version of its classic Beauty and the Beast manga series. Its LOVE x LOVE imprint will feature the following new highlights: This Wonderful Season With You, from author of Dekoboko Sugar Days, now on its third printing; Still Sick, the final volume of TOKYOPOP’s bestselling Girls Love series; and Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide, an LGBTQ+ Boys Love title about traveling around the world and experiencing different cultures.

TOKYOPOP has global recognition with a network of over 160 partners in more than 50 countries and 30 languages. Its production arm has produced live-action and animated film and television content based on its extensive intellectual property library, including Priest, America’s Greatest Otaku, Van Von Hunter, Riding Shotgun, and a slate of projects currently in development.

“IPG is thrilled to have the opportunity to represent a long established and well-respected publisher such as TOKYOPOP,” said Alex Kampmann, VP, Business Development. “Through this exciting new partnership we expect to significantly increase TOKYOPOP’s reach in the global marketplace and that more TOKYOPOP books will find their way into the hands of more readers.”

Ron English’s classic Lady Lips image is now three-dimensional as a life-size sculpture and vinyl art-toy sculpture release!
This iconic distillation of the rock and roll lifestyle is one of English’s best-loved and most collected images. World-renowned as a fine art painter and designer, Ron English collaborated with Clutter Studios (@cluttermagazine) to create this quintessential work of art.

"Every few years, I come upon something that just blows up and becomes way bigger than me… Lady Lips is everything that ever needs to be said about Rock and Roll" - Ron English

The Clutter team painstakingly worked with their friends at Cubonyc to 3d scan life models, perfecting the sculpt and production over several years in order to realize this consummate 3D representation of English’s vision.

“We love working with Ron! The Lady Lips project might be the most in-depth piece we have worked on. Getting the vinyl sculptures and the life-size sculpture just right was of enormous importance to us. We are so proud of how everything turned out, it’s just an extreme honor to be a part of Ron English’s art process and legacy.”  Miranda and Josh Kimberg

About Ron English: One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books, and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls, and grinning skulls, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast.
