About Albatross Exploding Funnybooks: Launched in 2002, Albatross Exploding Funnybooks has always been a labor of love for award-winning, Nashville-based cartoonist Eric Powell. The label began as a means to publish Powell’s creator-owned series THE GOON, which mainstream publishers had deemed “too different.” Although THE GOON later found a home and wider audience with Dark Horse Comics, Powell continued to publish, celebrate, and cultivate creator-owned titles through Albatross Exploding Funnybooks, including his all-ages comic CHIMICHANGA and Rebecca Sugar’s PUG DAVIS. In 2016, Powell rededicated himself in earnest to his publishing company, launching his new fantasy series HILLBILLY and other works such as the all-ages horror anthology SPOOK HOUSE, Fabian Rangel Jr. and  Logan Faerber's weird war tale ’NAMWOLF and Brendon Small's GALAKTKON.

Although he had been eking out a meager living in the comics field since 1995, Eric didn't find true success until he launched his critically acclaimed dark comedy series The Goon. The Goon was subsequently picked up by Dark Horse Comics and boasts a die-hard cult following.

PRAISE FOR THE GOON

“The Goon is old-school cool—a great, gurgling gumbo of EC Comics horror, Monty Python wit, and 1930s pulp.”--Entertainment Weekly

“A true American original—a delirious medley of strange characters, stranger creatures, wild-ass (and often truly creepy) storytelling, art so excellent and perfectly matched to the tone of his stories as to be flabbergasting, and writing so hilarious that it sometimes comes close to making me pee my pants.”—Frank Darabont, director

“The product of a contentedly demented mind.”--Comic Book Resources

“The Goon has earned [Powell] a seat at the table with Kirby, Eisner, Chester Gould, Hal Foster and Al Feldstein.”—Joe Hill (Locke & Key)

“Eric Powell’s great series The Goon deftly combines lowbrow humor with unexpected emotional depth in its ongoing story of a big, not-so-dumb guy who does battle with zombies in a town seemingly dreamt up by Tom Waits.”—The A.V. Club

“Eric Powell has created a sharp, witty little monster comic with a very interesting mystery at its heart. And Eric can draw as well as anyone in the business. When zombies are overrunning the city, there’s only one man tough enough to keep the undead in line: Eric Powell’s THE GOON.”—Jeff Smith (creator of Bone)

“Every panel [is] gorgeously detailed, like a Max Fleischer cartoon if Cthulhu spat some sort of hellish bile all over it.”—IGN

“There’s a certain joy knowing that a cartoonist of great skill is filling his or her own comic with the elements they love . . . The appeal is how Powell conveys that enthusiasm by drawing every creature and monster so darned well.”--Publishers Weekly

“If this is your first time [reading The Goon], you are in for a treat—if not, you already know how lucky you are.”—David Fincher, director

“Tremendously entertaining . . . a highly enjoyable blend of pulp horror and slapstick comedy.”--Fangoria

“Bursts with fisticuffs, gore, bad attitude and running character gags . . . Prime ghastly fun.”--Booklist

“A comic for readers who like a generous helping of comedy with their hordes of zombies.”--New York Daily News

“Comicdom’s new hero is a fighting machine with a curious affinity for kicking serious ghoul butt. We hear the Hulk’s green with envy.”--Entertainment Weekly

AHOY Comics Announces Second Wave of Comic Book Magazines

Featuring Comics, Prose, Poetry and Illustration from: Giulia Brusco, Elsa Charretier, Paul Constant, Randy Elliott, Chris Giarrusso, Peter Gross, Fred Harper, Lee Loughridge, Stuart Moore, David Nakayama, Tom Peyer, Alberto Ponticelli, Alan Robinson, Hart Seely, Felipe Sobreiro, Lanna Souvanny, Mark Waid, Richard Williams, and More

#ExpectMore

January 21, 2019 ) AHOY Comics—the startup publisher that pledged for readers to “expect more” from its debut lineup of comic book magazines in 2018— will publish its second wave of titles this spring. AHOY launched four acclaimed comic book magazine titles in 2018 featuring full length comic book stories, poetry, prose fiction, and cartoons from more than seventy artists and writers. AHOY Comics’ second wave of comic book magazines will debut in comic book stores and on comiXology with more comic book stories, poetry, prose, recipes, and even a crossword puzzle in April of 2019.

AHOY Comics is led by Publisher Hart Seely, an award-winning reporter whose humor and satire has appeared in The New York Times and on National Public Radio; two original editors of DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, Tom Peyer and Stuart Moore; and Chief Creative Officer Frank Cammuso.

“We weren't kidding when we said It’s time to expect more from comics,” said AHOY Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “We’re committed to infusing our comic book magazines with fun, humor and eclectic extra material. And I think it’s safe to say that AHOY Comics is the only publisher that has published a chicken-fried steak recipe by Mark Russell, craft cocktail recipes for troubled times by Seattle Times’ food writer Bethany Jean Clement, cartoons by Shannon Wheeler, and prose fiction by writer Grant Morrison.”

“And comic book stories,” said AHOY Comics Publisher Hart Seely. “We publish those, too.”

AHOY Comics Second Wave includes:

BRONZE AGE BOOGIE by writer Stuart Moore, artist Alberto Ponticelli and colorist Giulia Brusco, with a cover by Ponticelli and Brusco
April 3, 2019; $3.99

“From its jawdroppingly odd first page to its hilariously insane last, BRONZE AGE BOOGIE sets itself apart from every other comic in the best possible ways. I loved every insane minute of it.”
--Matthew Rosenberg (Uncanny X-Men, The Punisher, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank)

“It’s like skateboarding uncontrollably through 1970s comics with kaleidoscopes strapped to your eyes — but in a good way! I mean, I guess they could have called it SAVAGE SWORD OF THE PLANET OF THE DEADLY HANDS OF THE WORLDS ON THE LOOSE…but BRONZE AGE BOOGIE is, at the very least, shorter. Don’t miss it!”— Kurt Busiek (Astro City, Marvels)

What do you get when you combine all the best-loved comics genres of the 1970s: apes, monsters, Kung Fu, sword-and-sorcery, and cosmic adventure? You get BRONZE AGE BOOGIE, an intense, character-based action-fest with plenty of style! In this collector’s item first issue, young barbarian princess Brita Constantina finds herself battling a Martian invasion—in 1975 AD and BC! Back-feature: Meet MAJOR URSA, the first bear in space. But will he be a hero or a villain? Plus the usual assortment of AHOY text stories!
Picture
PLANET OF THE NERDS by writer Paul Constant, artists Alan Robinson and Randy Elliott, and colorist Felipe Sobreiro  with covers by David Nakayama
April 17, 2019; $3.99

“PLANET OF THE NERDS #1 captures the goofy joy of 80s classics like Revenge of the Nerds, Back To The Future, and Real Genius. Then, with the most elegant of plot twists, it updates the story for a different age. Smart, fast paced and beautifully drawn.”— Gene Ha (Mae)

"We all know that nerds won the great nerd/jock battle of the 80s, but what if a bunch of jocks were frozen in time and emerged not knowing the war was over? That's the question PLANET OF THE NERDS asks, and the answer is, ironically, delightfully nerdy nerdy fun."--Arthur Wyatt, (Judge Dredd)

"This is a really good bit." — Daniel Kibblesmith (Santa’s Husband)

“AHOY’s offerings so far have been a celebration of a comic world won by all us geeks. Planet of the Nerds continues that creatively invigorating streak while also serving as a cleverly written, beautifully illustrated cautionary tale for non-comics bullies everywhere.” — Chris Ryall, President & Publisher/CCO, IDW Publishing

Three high school jocks in the 1980s are accidentally frozen by an experimental cryogenics device, only to be revived in the computer-driven, superhero movie-loving world of 2019--an era ruled by nerds! PLUS! A backup series explores the characters’ origins. EXTRA! Prose and pictures by the finest talents in and out of comics.
Picture
HASHTAG: DANGER by writer Tom Peyer, artist Chris Giarrusso, and covers by Richard Williams
May 1, 2019; $3.99

"HASHTAG: DANGER! is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and, as we all know, sliced bread is pretty great—vastly superior to unsliced bread which has to be pulled apart with your fist like an animal."— Erik Larsen (Savage Dragon)

“AW YEAH, HASHTAG!" - Art Baltazar (Tiny Titans)

"AW YEAH, DANGER!" - Franco (Patrick the Wolf Boy)

Exploding from the pages of High Heaven, three scientific adventurers face strange creatures, lost civilizations, and supernatural threats--when they’re not too busy being complete jerks to each other. PLUS! Follow the depressing misadventures of Snelson, an over-the-hill comedian who peaked in the 90s. EXTRA! Pics, prose, and possibly poems!

Painted cover by Richard Williams (MAD, EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR)
Picture
STEEL CAGE One-Shot, featuring stories by writer Mark Waid and artist Lanna Souvanny, writer Tom Peyer and artist Alan Robinson, writer Stuart Moore and artist Peter Gross; and a cover by Elsa Charretier
June 26, 2019; $3.99

Three dazzling short “pilot” stories from AHOY’s finest – and YOU get to vote on which series continues! In “Noah Zark” by Mark Waid and Lanna Souvanny, an alien boy is kidnapped into an interplanetary zoo—and becomes the protector of the animals. In “True Identity” by Tom Peyer and Alan Robinson, we learn what secret anguish drives the most beloved superhero on Earth! And Stuart Moore and Peter Gross’s “Bright Boy” tells the grim tale of the world’s smartest human—and the havoc he leaves in his wake.

“Our aim at AHOY Comics is publish quality stories, backed up by engaging extras that are worth our readers’ time and attention,”  said Bronze Age Boogie co-creator Stuart Moore, freelance writer and AHOY Comics “Dark Ops” Manager. “The launch titles included a parody of Edgar Allan Poe, a superhero satire, and a galactic epic with cats. Now people will see: AHOY is just getting started.”

FEMINIST TEEN GRAPHIC NOVEL MAN-EATERS, VOL. 1 WILL HIT BOOKSTORES WITH EXCLUSIVE SIGNED EDITION FOR INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY 2019

Picture
PORTLAND, Ore. 01/22/2019 — Eisner-nominated and New York Times bestselling thriller writer Chelsea Cain, artist Kate Niemczyk, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer Joe Caramagna of the controversial and buzzed about comic Mockingbird team with Lia Miternique and Stella Greenvoss to launch a hot new feminist sci-fi series for teens this March with Man-Eaters, Vol. 1. In celebration of the new series, an additional, exclusive, signed edition will be available for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 27.On the heels of Marvel’s unexpected cancellation of Cain’s The Vision series, support of Man-Eaters went viral across the social media sphere with signal blasts from mainstream media covering the Marvel slight and ironic timing with her new series, Man-Eaters. The hot new title can best be described as Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine DeLandro’s Bitch Planet meets Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

In Man-Eaters, readers are introduced to a world where a mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats—easily provoked and extremely dangerous. As panic spreads and paranoia takes root, the fate of the world rides on the shoulders of one 12-year-old girl. Part Cat People, part Naomi Alderman’s The Power, Man-Eaters has an all pro-feline agenda.

Bookstores interested in submitting Independent Bookstore Day orders must do so by Friday, February 1, 2019.

Man-Eaters, Vol. 1 (ISBN: 978-1-5343-1143-5, Diamond Code DEC180123) hits comic book stores on Wednesday, Feb 27 and bookstores on Tuesday, March 5. The final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, Jan 14.

It is available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, IndieBound, and Indigo. Fans can also subscribe to receive the series delivered by mail within the domestic U.S. on Image Direct.

For digital readers, Man-Eaters is available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.
Select praise for Man-Eaters, Vol. 1:

“The Image Comics series combines The Handmaid's Tale, Cat People and a wonderfully wicked sense of humor. Unlike anything else on the stands right now.” --The Hollywood Reporter

“It’s brilliant.” --Kelly Sue DeConnick, Bitch Planet

“Rachelle Rosenberg's colors help tie everything together, painting even the darker moments of the issue with eye-popping colors. Joe Caramagna's feels like the icing on the cake, going from clever and childlike whimsy to genuine terror with ease. As a whole, the visual aesthetic of Man-Eaters nails the nuance of being a teenage girl—facing the horrors of the world, but attempting to hang on to a sense of optimism in the process.” --Comicbook.com

“Cain has taken on the best of them and come out swinging because she’s just that damn good.” --Geek.com
“Man-Eaters has a sharp sense of humor that fuels the book’s momentum and makes it an especially fun read.” --The Onion’s AV Club

“Cain and Niemczyk are remarkably inventive here, telling the story through traditional narrative comics and graphs and photorealistic effects and other wild experiments in visual narrative…Cain seems to inherently understand what it is that makes comics so great.” --The Seattle Review of Books
“I am so cuckoo for this book. It’s so exciting, vital, funny, weird.” --Ben Blacker, Thrilling Adventure Hour, Nerdist Writers Panel, Supernatural, Hex Wives

Filmmaker Macon Blair Brings You Long Road to Liquor City

PORTLAND, OR., Jan. 22, 2019 — Jumping trains and throwing pies! The oogles have nothing on Oni Press’s new original graphic novel, Long Road to Liquor City. Written by Macon Blair, Gotham Independent Film Award Breakthrough Actor nominee and director of the Portland-based film, I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, with art by Eisner-nominated author and illustrator of Science Comics, Joe Flood, comes a Great Depression-era adventure comedy about love, friendship, and the pursuit of happiness.

As jaunty hobos Jed and Thanny crisscross the country in search of the fabled Liquor City, they are pursued relentlessly by fearsome rail yard sergeant Ronan O’Feathers, who wrongly blames them for his wife’s death. With the the law on their tails and a succession of colorful characters along the way, the only constant is the absurdity and mayhem they leave in their wake on the Long Road to Liquor City.

“Long Road to Liquor City has been a passion project of ours for ten years, with Joe and I chipping away at it bit by bit in between our day jobs,” said Macon Blair. “Hard to believe it's actually coming out! It began as a ‘hobo comedy adventure,’ but with time I've come to see it as a love story. All our train-hopping heroes have in the world is each other, no amount of moonshine or hot dogs can change that, but being road partners is hard stuff and the fun of this book is putting their relationship to the test in increasingly dangerous ways. We always wanted to balance the laughs with heart.”

“Creating the art for Long Road to Liquor City was a metaphorical road that stretches across most of my career to this point,” said Joe Flood. “Macon handed me the script shortly after finishing our first graphic novel project together and I might have bitten off more than I could chew, but the persistence of both myself, Macon, and our editor resulted in a book that I’m not only proud of, but I find is an excellent cross-section of my growth as a comic artist.”

Promethee 13:13 is an upcoming prequel to the critically acclaimed, post-apocalyptic sci-fi  bandes dessinées by Christophe Bec
Bec, Diggle, Martinbrough, & Jock to sign the exclusive Promethee 13:13 poster and speak during a panel at the Festival International De La Bande Dessinée

Volumes 1 & 2 to be simultaneously released in English and French same-day worldwide

January 22, 2019 – ComiXology, Amazon’s premier digital comics service, and Delcourt Group, the leading independent comic book publisher in France, join forces to bring readers everywhere the upcoming comiXology Originals title Promethee 13:13, a prequel to Christophe Bec’s best-selling, mind-bending, science-fiction bande dessinée, Promethee. The Promethee 13:13 team along with originalPromethee creator Christophe Bec will be in attendance at the 46th annual Festival International De La Bande Dessinée – happening January 24-27, 2019 in Angouleme, France – to promote and discuss new details about this upcoming title.

Coming this year as part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content, Promethee 13:13 will be exclusively available as two 48-page volumes on Kindle and comiXology and available to members of Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited at no additional cost. Each volume will be simultaneously released in English and French worldwide at debut.

To celebrate this announcement, the all-star Promethee 13:13 creative team of Andy Diggle, Shawn Martinbrough and Jock, along with Promethee original creator, Christophe Bec, will appear at the Delcourt Group booth in Le Monde des Bulles Marquee to sign an exclusive, limited edition poster illustrated by Shawn Martinbrough, with colors by Jock, Friday, January 25th from 5-6pm, and Saturday January 26thfrom 7-8pm. Additionally, the Promethee team along with comiXology Originals Head of Content, Chip Mosher, Directeur Editorial at Delcourt Group, Jean Wacquet, and Editor Will Dennis, will discuss this upcoming comic series during the Past, Present and Future: Promethee 13:13 panel, Thursday, January 24th at 4:30pm at the Conservatory Gabriel Fauré in Angoulême, France.

“The universe of Promethee is vast. It could be extended, as I am doing now, or enriched, as Andy Diggle wanted to do. He has adeptly filled gaps in my story, bringing his own vision and digging deeper into aspects of the tale that I only ever touched on, sometimes even with a certain poetry. Shawn Martinbrough’s artwork has character; his stark style brings a new feeling to the series, that will permit it, I hope, to help a much larger number of American readers discover my series,” said Promethee original creator/writer/artist Christophe Bec.

“The Promethee series is this huge, sprawling epic that takes place over thousands of years with dozens of characters. There’s so much material and so many options, you’re spoiled for choice. I wanted to come up with something accessible and give a sense of the wealth of the material out there to be discovered, but without it feeling completely overwhelming—a nice self-contained story, which doesn’t require you to have any knowledge of the original series, but can act as a doorway to it,” said Promethee 13:13 writer, Andy Diggle.

Promethee 13:13 is a psychological sci-fi horror comic full of alien conspiracy, written by Andy Diggle (The Losers, Thief of Thieves, Hellblazer, Uncanny) with art by Shawn Martinbrough (Thief of Thieves, Batman: Detective Comics, The Black Panther, Hellboy), colors by Dave Stewart (Hellboy, DC: The New Frontier, The Umbrella Academy), covers by Jock (Batman, The Losers), and headed by veteran editor Will Dennis.

Darla, a successful author, has visions of apocalyptic invasions and being abducted by aliens as a child. After years of medication she’s put it behind her, until one day while speaking at a mental illness conference in San Diego, her life gets turned upside down. At the same time, strange things begin to happen during the latest space shuttle Atlantis mission. Promethee 13:13 tells the thrilling fast-paced space drama leading up to the moments of September 21, 2019 at 13:13.

In addition to being purchasable on comiXology and Amazon, comiXology Originals are also available to read through Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited. American Mythology Finds Itself in Another Fine Mess with Launch of New Laurel & Hardy Comic!

01/15/19 [Baltimore, Maryland] – There are few names in the history of comedy which have stood the test of time.  Acts who transcend age and bring laughter to generations like few have before or after them.  They have been recognized as a template for modern humor and celebrated by today’s most popular funnymen and women alike.  Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were the pinnacle of comedic genius for their time.

Now, American Mythology Comics, the same company who brought The Three Stooges back into the comics’ spotlight, is bringing Laurel & Hardy’s beloved slapstick shenanigans back to their legion of fans with the release of a new comic book in April of 2019!   The comic book publisher plans to both celebrate and pay tribute to Stan and Ollie’s legacy by bringing new stories to fans with the upcoming series, and also by reprinting some of their frantic follies from years past.

Art for the new series will be created by veteran comic artist, Jorge Pacheco (Rocky & Bullwinkle, Pink Panther, Looney Tunes).  Pacheco is well-versed with illustrating the comedy duo, having already done so over thirty years ago when Stan and Ollie last saw the paneled pages of comics.  The stories for the premiere issue will be provided by novelist and comic writer, S.A. Check (The Three Stooges, Casper, Legend Gary), and multi-media writer, Jordan Gershowitz (Tom and Jerry, Danger Mouse, Sesame Street).  Both new stories will center on honoring the tone and feel of the original skits made famous by the comedians.

“Sometimes you just get lucky,” said book artist Pacheco.  “My step father brought a comic book home for me. It was a monster book with art by Jack Kirby & Steve Ditko. How was I supposed to know, my first exposure to comics was drawn by probably the two greatest comic book artists ever?  Then, one day, I was channel surfing on TV when I came across this "chubby guy & his goofy friend". I watched it and was immediately hooked. Little did I know, I was watching the greatest comedic duo ever, Laurel & Hardy. Again, I got lucky.  So, throughout childhood, I read comics, watched monster shows & the great Laurel & Hardy movies on a mini movie projector my mother had bought me until the films were nothing but tatters. Recently, my good friends at American Mythology asked if I'd like to be an artist on a new project for the publisher.  I was excited & asked what book? He said Laurel & Hardy. Sometimes, luck is a wonderful thing.  I hope you all enjoy the comedic duo's antics half as much as I've enjoyed bringing L&H to life in these comic pages!”

“It’s a rare occasion for a writer to contribute in celebrating two comedic geniuses like Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy,” said book writer S.A. Check.  “When I learned American Mythology had a shot at working with Larry Harmon Pictures to bring the comedy of these two larger than life icons back to fans, I was the first in line to have a shot at working on the book.  One of my favorite parts of the process has been delving back into the skits and movies and numerous articles written about the comedians, and remembering why so many fans continue to hold their work in such high regard.  I’m very proud of my work on the project, and I only hope I managed to bring a fraction of the magic they shared on the stage and screen back to fans.”

Laurel and Hardy were a comedy act known best during the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. The team was composed of Stan Laurel, an Englishman, and Oliver Hardy, an American. The duo appeared as a team in 107 films between 1927 and 1950. The official Laurel and Hardy appreciation society is known as “The Sons of the Desert”, named after a fictional fraternal society in their 1933 film of the same name.

"We are excited and honored to work with American Mythology on a new line of Laurel & Hardy Comic Books.  With the current international release of our new Laurel & Hardy feature film, Stan & Ollie, the timing is perfect to reintroduce Laurel & Hardy Comics to new generations of Laurel & Hardy fans, as well as of course to the millions of existing fans around the world," said Marci Breth, Vice President of Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation.

Laurel & Hardy #1, will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ February 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in April 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers.

BEDSIDE PRESS UNEARTHS LOST LESBIAN PULP NOVEL WORK FOR A MILLION FOR ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL

New Kickstarter Campaign Launches Today To Adapt and Reprint Eve Zaremba’s 1986 Helen Keremos Novel

WINNIPEG, MB–Bedside Press, the Canadian comic book and prose publisher celebrates their five year anniversary by unearthing Eve Zaremba’s long out of print novel, Work for a Million! Largely unknown, and originallypublished in 1986 by Amanita Press, Work for a Million was notably the first pulp novel to star a lesbian private investigator!

Helen Keremos originally premiered just under ten years earlier in 1978, but it was in Work for a Millionthat she was at her best. In addition to reprinting this groundbreaking lost work of fiction, Kickstarter comic book thought leader and Bedside Press publisher Hope Nicholson looks to fund an all-new graphic novel adapation by Amanda Deibert and Selena Goulding.

“When Margaret Atwood emailed me one day, to ask if I could assist some friends of hers with advice, I had never heard of the detective Helen Keremos” says Bedside Press founder and publisher, Hope Nicholson. “I did some quick research online and could see why she thought of me instantly for help. A character who premiered in an era I dearly love, the 1970s, set in Canada, starring the first openly lesbian PI, and written by an out lesbian woman?? This is the type of literary history I adore, forgotten but absolutely essential and groundbreaking.”
Witty, sly, and incredibly skilled at her job, Helen Keremos is tired of the busy Toronto life and just wants to truck back to Vancouver and peace. But before she goes, she's hired for one last job, to protect the newly wealthy struggling songbird Sonia Deerfield, who's been receiving death threats and attempts on her life. With predatory "friends" all around Sonia, it's hard to tell who Helen can trust. As the danger increases around them, Helen and Sonia find themselves drawn to each other for more than just protection. Soon, Helen realizes that Sonia isn't the only one with a target on her back, as the mysterious blackmailer turns their attention to her too...

Nicholson continues, “Out of all her adventures, the one that struck me the most that I had to work with was Work for a Million. Not only is it a steamy noir set in Toronto, but it features a will-they-won’t-they romance between the femme fatale and our dashing detective, Helen. I immediately knew that I didn’t just want to give advice, I wanted to publish this as a graphic novel. Eve, and her wife Ottie who has been instrumental as the organizer of this project, both agreed on this path.”
Bedside Press will also be reissuing the original prose novel with a new cover by Sami Kivelä (Abbott), while the graphic novel will be adapted by Amanda Deibert and Selena Goulding, both of whom had previously contributed to the crically acclaimed anthologies, The Secret Lives of Geeks and Secret Lives of Geek Girls, with a breathtaking new cover by Sean Phillips (Criminal).

Nicholson concludes “This book, both in its original prose, and in this new graphic novel (both of which are part of the Kickstarter), is an important part of crime fiction history, LGBT history, feminist literature history, and Canadian literature history. And yet, even though it’s set decades in the past, the energy sparkling between our leads feels very fresh and exciting. This is the perfect gift for those who love pulp and crime comics, with a Bogart-esque tough PI lead who still has a soft spot for vulnerable people to protect.”

New York Times Bestselling Author Debuts First Series From BOOM! Studios in April 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 14, 2018) – BOOM! Studios today announcedFAITHLESS #1, from New York Times bestselling writer Brian Azzarello (Batman: Damned) and artist Maria Llovet (Loud), with Eisner Award-winning artist Paul Pope on covers in an unforgettable story of self-exploration, eroticism, and…maybe even love.

Arriving in stores April 10th, 2019, FAITHLESS introduces readers to Faith, a young woman who likes to dabble in the occult. Her friends think it’s cute—and not just a little off-putting, but it’s part of her charm and her warped search for purpose in a world that makes too much sense. But she's a true believer and knows there is a power within her reach. She’s right, of course. It just took a while for the supernatural, the temptation, the unknowable thing to find her . . .

In short--Faith is bored as hell. And Hell has noticed.

FAITHLESS #1 features an erotic variant cover by superstar Tula Lotay (Supreme: Blue Rose), that will be polybagged and not publicly previewed due to sexually explicit material. Subsequent issues of FAITHLESS will continue this variant cover program with similar content and packaging.

Brian Azzarello is the Harvey and Eisner Award-winning co-creator (with artist Eduardo Risso) of 100 Bullets, along with Loveless and Moonshine.  The New York Times bestselling author’s work for DC Comics includes the titles Hellblazer, Superman, Joker,Luthor, Before Watchmen, Wonder Woman, & Dark Knight III with Frank Miller. Most recently he and artist Lee Bermejo launched DC’s groundbreaking Mature Readers imprint Black Label with the controversial and critically acclaimed Batman: Damned.

“FAITHLESS is a black pearl born over a shared platter of oysters on a summer night in Los Angeles. It’s amazing what those briny jewels can spark,” said Azzarello. “Maria’s work inspires me, and what Sierra (Hahn, Executive Editor) is pulling together I find exciting. I think what we’re doing here, our total approach, is pretty unique in comics. The last thing I ever want to do is repeat myself. Well, these are beautiful, dark, uncharted waters.”

Maria Llovet is a multidisciplinary artist from Barcelona, who has published four graphic novels, including There’s Nothing There, Loud, and Heartbeat. Her illustration has been characterized by a great cinematographic influence in its visual narrative, with sex and death as central themes permeating her work.

“I’m thrilled to be part of this team and this project,” said Llovet. “Brian created a cool bunch of characters who I loved instantly—it feels as if the script was made to measure because it touches many subjects and themes I’ve loved exploring in my career.”

FAITHLESS is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Abbott from Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä;Bury The Lede from Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Grass Kings from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins; and Klaus from Grant Morrison and Dan Mora. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties including Joss Whedon’s Firefly from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid andBuffy The Vampire Slayer from Jordie Bellaire and Dan Mora.

“Collaborating with Brian and Maria on FAITHLESS has allowed us to create an honest, nuanced portrayal of female identity in a modern world. As we see Faith challenge the rules of society around her, we’re hoping to challenge readers to reflect on the way they interact with their own personal realities…and to rediscover a bit of magic in the everyday, even when that comes with unintended perils,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Brian and Maria have crafted a resonant examination of what it means to be your true self in a world that asks us to assume false identities to better suit those around us instead of asking those same people to embrace our hidden depths.”
