“If you’re just joining us, I’m Jim Johnson, vampire commentator, and this rugged slab of ogre sitting beside me is the infamous former Blood Bowl player Bob Bifford.”
“Thanks for the intro, Jim. I feel so special. Now, if you’ve only just woken from a fist-induced coma – like at least five of the players out on the pitch – here’s a reminder: Blood Bowl is an epic contest between two teams as they battle and bludgeon their way across a field, inflated pig intestine in hand, to score winning touchdowns!”
“Fans from every race across the known world are packed into stadia across the land tonight, or glued to their Cabalvision orbs, hoping to witness a brutal and bloody execution of skill, strategy and blunt force. Keep your eyes peeled for underhanded tactics – they’re the best bit!”
“Yup, anything goes, Jim – on and off the pitch. These players are going to fight it out,
no-holds-barred, in the hopes of becoming the ultimate Blood Bowl champions!”

Okay so here’s the deal this isn’t going to be for everyone.  I mean it combines football and Warhammer into one heck of a bloody sport.  Now if you are a fan of things like Rollerball, Running Man, Death Race etc then you’ll really rather enjoy the premise here.  The whole underdog team rising up and fighting the system that wants them to fail playing a sport where violence and death are commonplace.  Fans of the RPG game will find this drastically different than they are used to.

Personally it would be like a very dark twisted version of Quidditch would be if they went there.  The no holds barred kind of thing that makes cage fighting, UFC and the like, as popular as it is.  Me you wouldn’t guess it right off but i’m a fan of violent sports they have that excitement and edge to them that mixes danger and the flow of blood.  So that this is wrapped up in one of those kind of adventures where we are supposed to root for the underdogs well that doesn’t hurt either.

I like the interior artwork here!  The linework is fantastic it’s sharp and the attention to detail here is phenomenal.  The utilisation of page layouts through the use of angles and perspective are fantastic for controlling the flow of the story.  Also i’m a big proponent of the use of backgrounds and that we see them in play here like we do is utterly marvelous.  Also the finishes here are great and the colouring is dynamic with its shading and delineation are completely on point.

So this is a story that centers around Dreng Sturnblud and his life and career, hte rise, fall and rise again to greatness.  With his new teammates and an unknown foe that wants to stop the team from succeeding we’ll see if this washed up once great sportsman has what it takes to find himself again.  It’s a good solid story so far with tons of promise and potential i’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Things You Shouldn’t Remember #1
Darby Pop Publishing 2017
Written & Lettered by Luis Roldan Torquemada
Illustrated by Mariano Eliceche

I think this is freaking amazing!  The premise behind this story seems to be that history has been rewritten and there are agents out there whose sole job it is is to eliminate those people who remember it.   So we’ve got folks remembering things that #NeverHappened which includes songs, movies, television shows and mondo news events.  Why and what kind of danger they pose to society is completely unknown all we know is that they get eliminated regardless of age, gender etcetera.

You’d think it sounds kind of hokey at first because the reality is that my description doesn’t necessarily convey everything that you experience reading the story.  This is going to be released as a graphic novel in August if you don’t want to read them individually and I highly recommend that you go order it.  Why because it has the all the right notes and tones between horror, mystery and science fiction that make it a wild thrill ride.

At times the characterisation is oblique and that comes across purposefully so and at other times you know everything about someone through their dialogue and actions.   For instance the agents are creepy and ambiguous and the by contrast what i’m doing to say will be a main character or antagonist to them, Marc Royles, is extremely well defined and it’s the way we see this contrast that really is impressive.  Luis does this amazing job with how and when he decides to do his thing.

The way this is structured is great the ebb and flow of the story is enjoyable.  There’s plenty revealed while simultaneously we are left wondering what the hell is going on.  I mean I want to know more about these agents, it’s just something I want as what we see just isn’t enough.  It’s got that hook, leaving desire implanted in the reader so that they want, no crave more about what’s going on here.

The utilisation of page layouts and how angles, perspective and even backgrounds come into play are spectacularly done.  I like that nudity isn’t shied away from here.  The way that bodies are shown with proportions are wonderful to see, I like the average ordinary body types and that this brings that.  Would I like to see more backgrounds in play but of course because those shaded colours behind heads do a disservice but really that’s my take as it doesn’t detract from enjoying this story at all.  Also it should be noted that there times the colouring here is outstanding, the couch in the old lady’s place as well as the flower work in her dress not to mention that wallpaper all of them stand out beautifully.

Well they’ve gone and made sure the characters are interesting, the premise solid and intriguing and have delivered a strong well executed first issue.  I want more and with so many different companies offering so many different things that this one has what it takes to stand out well that’s something special.

I’m both amazed and dismayed by Felix.  This is all because of James’ characterisation of him.  We’ve seen him before and the impression we got was as mixed as we’re seeing him here.  Once upon a time he may have been competent and a fine agent but that’s no longer the case.  Could he be that once again by the time this over, I don’t know it’s possible but ya never know and that’s half the fun here.

I think aside from wanting to see Felix regain that spark which made him such a good agent and one that was respected on the world stage is that we are seeing other agents like Tiger.  I mean c’mon the man is as close to a real Ninja as we’re likely to find and seeing him in action here is astoundingly good.  So that we’re seeing the same type of Agents from countries around the world who inhabit the same realm as James it not expands his world but somehow makes it more complete.  I mean we all know he can’t be the only spy in the world aside from the bad guys agents so this is great to see.

I’m not sure this story could be told without Aaron.  He’s an amazing artist and illustrator and that he can bring these characters to life in such a manner as we believe them to be real people is invaluable.  His eye for storytelling through page layouts utilising angles, perspective and those backgrounds really show off exactly what the story needs to be most effective.   Plus the action here is simply amazing, the sense of motion is superb.

I have to say that while Felix chases down his ex to figure out what she’s up to seems to be the mission it’s really his personal story that shines brightest.  It’s like he needed this adventure to deal with how he feels about himself and to regain that confidence he lost after losing the arm and leg.  That kind of loss took him out of the game and now that he’s back in it he’s a shade of his former self.

Personal stories where the main character has to overcome something from his past is the basis of most things we see.  That’ll never change and what makes a man the kind of person we root for is how he reacts to those hardships, overcomes his fears and tries to return to his former self.  So while we watch and see if Felix can find his mojo once again in the midst of the chaos that is a former flame, spy and new world threat it’s time to just enjoy.  Gotta like what we’re seeing here as things keep going in directions I never expected to see but am thoroughly enjoying more than I ever thought I would!

I will say this Dynamite has really gone above and beyond when it comes to the James Bond universe.  With great stories, fantastic characterisation and characters that are flawed enough to be interesting they are doing things that the movies never could!

Assassin’s Creed Uprising #4
Titan Comics 2017
Written by Alex Paknadel & Dan Watters
Illustrated by Jose Holder

Lettered by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt

After coming to blows with a mysterious and highly powered faction, the Assassin Brotherhood is on high alert. Discovering a link dating back to the Spanish Civil War, Charlotte de la Cruz entered the Animus in the hopes of learning more about this illusive fifth column, but now finds herself trapped in the limbo-like Memory Corridor. Worse off, it seems her former ally
Guernica, is not all who he appears to be…  Meanwhile, following an explosive confrontation in Berlin, new initiate My'shell Lemair has begun to search for answers in the spending history of the Assassin and Templar Orders, the investigation leading her to Geneva's financial district. But it seems she's not the only one following the money trail…

Well it would seem that perhaps this world was more reliant upon it’s gods than anyone expected.  Alex and Dan bring us a new and interesting plot twist to the series and do so in a way that combines history in a wonderful way.  I’m not just talking history as in our own either but history as in the games as well.  This takes things to a different level for me and as it is meant to tie in the Assassin’s and the Templar’s together it’s doing a bang up job of it.  Also could it be that they need a common enemy to unite against and realise who they all are at their core once more?  Interesting plot device if it’s true, it’s speculation at this point on my part but stranger things have happened.

Well the interiors here aren’t what i’ve come to expect out of Titan books that’s for sure.  Definitely not as smooth, clean lined and detailed as i’ve come to know and love but still expressive and descriptive.  Also didn’t mind the snowflake bit at all, it made me chuckle actually.  I will say i’d like to see more backgrounds in use, this is a book that thrives when they are in play and the cheapen the moment by leaving a umbra shade or solid colour behind a figure well where’s the context of what’s going on?   The use of page layouts through their angles and perspective are well executed.  With a large cast of characters it’s great that there’s so much individuality is wonderfully done.

One of the signs of a good story is that it makes the reader ask questions.  I find myself asking if the two factions have always been at odds, if there have been Templars have there been Assassin’s too?   If not then when and why was the split?  Does anyone even remember a time or cause for them to work together and if at this stage is the kind of trust that would require even possible?   I love that i’m asking questions during and long after I’m reading the issue it means that the story is resonating with me as a reader and a fan.

I am enjoying the fact that as a non-video gamer I can come into this franchise through the comics and find myself immersed in a world that is fascinating and intriguing.

The Old Guard #4
Image Comics 2017
Written by Greg Rucka
Illustrated by Leandro Fernandez
Coloured by Daniela Miwa
Lettered by Jodi Wynne

This is a fairy tale of blood and bullets.  It is the story of two women and three men who cannot die. Mostly.  Their names are Andy, Nicky, Joe, Booker, and Nile.  Joe and Nicky have been kidnapped by a piece of shit named Merrick.  Merrick was helped by an ex-CIA agent named Copley. Andy, Nile, and Booker know about Copley.  Once they know about Merrick,
Merrick is going to be in a lot of trouble.

Well well well, holy shit and goodnight grace because this was something else.  Well I was kind of expecting it but not in this manner.  I mean we knew that Copley set up the team but we didn’t know why or how he knew to do it.  We kind of met his benefactor and his reasoning for wanting to capture some alive well no matter how misguided is understandable.  However with all that I didn’t think things would progress this quickly.  I really thought with the addition of Nile this was going to take a bit longer to play out.

That is was Greg does though he constantly surprises us with what he’s going to bring to the table.   I love that we need to expect the unexpected where his stories are concerned.  Plus it’s not just the story here it’s the level of characterisation as well as the structure, plot development and story advancement.  All of it is so masterfully on display here that’s it’s truly a joy to see how it unfolds through its twists, turns and myriad of non-linear thought.

I’ll admit that Leandro’s work isn’t the first thing i’d gravitate towards when looking for work to inspire me.  It’s very plain to me and though I prefer to see a much more detailed look with cleaner, tighter linework.  This is very comic strip like and relies heavily on shading to get across it’s mood.  Still it seems to work very well with Greg’s story.  The flow of the book is nice and there’s one manic scene that manages to stand out like it so very much needs to.  The use of angles and perspective are handled well.   Oh and thanks for the peen because too many are afraid to show it.

This issue gives us a nice look at the trials and tribulations of living for as long as some have.  Andy’s life has been very different than many would expect it to be and exactly like it should be.  This look at Andy and seeing her through Nile’s eyes is actually extremely interesting.  Yes there are other factors of this book that stick out and that we should pay close attention to but for some reason the personality and the way Andy is shines incredibly bright through what we see.

Oh yeah our crazed, obsessed pharma bad guy is delightful and seeing her personality erupt like it does this issue is extremely well shown.  I mean we already knew that he was the villain here that was never a secret but how utterly cuckoo for cocoa puffs he is well that’s another thing entirely.

Entertaining, thrilling and surprising this is what we really want in our comics.

Highlander The American Dream #4

Highlander The American Dream #4
IDW Publishing 2017
Written by Brian Ruckley
Illustrated by Andrea Mutti
Coloured by Vladimir Popov
Lettered by Christa Miesner

New York, 1955. Connor MacLeod – the Highlander – and Osta Vazilek are pursuing
John Hooke, a fellow immortal and serial killer who has roamed the United States for centuries. At stake is nothing less than the future itself: which immortal will survive to reach the Gathering, claim the Prize and turn the world towards either light or darkness?

This has come to embody everything about the franchise that we could have wanted and more.  Why because it’s rooted in Connor’s past, with his associates and takes a look at his history in ways that make this more dynamic and interesting that many of us bargained for.  Brian has beautifully captured the very essence of the franchise  and it’s appeal in this story and shows promise that we can in the future look forward to more peeks into his past.

So I know that Highlander was all about Connor but seriously the more we see of the Monk the more I want to see.   There’s something about him that is comforting and yet also hides the fact he’s dangerous as all get out.  Yes he’s taken the way of peace and tranquility but he’s also an immortal and one who has to find a way to survive and if he’s to do that he cannot deny the taking of someone else’s head once in a while.

I like Andrea’s work here and it’s a little different from the other book he’s got out this week.  This one is a bit less detailed and had a much broader lane for interpretation.  I love the clothes and the look of the of both the fifties, where everyone and I do mean everyone smoked then to the eighties where the fashions were louder and well let’s just say colourful.  I do miss his backgrounds but that’s a personal thing because really the work doesn’t need them here.  Still the way page layouts are used through angles and perspective are well done.

When it comes down to it the Highlander story is one based upon characterisation and the ability to weave a good story.  Thankfully we are getting that here.  The door has been opened to timeline of possibilities, like who was the first immortal and how did the tradition find its way to the end?  Someone had to know or establish the rules by which they follow and honestly I think it’s time Connor discovered the whole unmitigated truth in a story told by this creative team.

This really is the perfect way to keep the franchise alive, explore Connor’s life, loves and experiences.  Nothing is off limits and there’s plenty of story to go around.  While not a continuation of a series is is the perfect compliment to one.

All New Soulfire #3 (of 8)
Aspen Comics 2017
Written by J.T. Krul
Illustrated by Giuseppe Cafaro

Lettered by Zen

The hunt for Malakai intensified as the forces of magic collided inside a trendy nightclub, with Grace nearly capturing him, but not before Onyx and Spark were able to fend her off.  meanwhile Sonia found herself smitten with Malakai, but Benoist and PJ warned her to be cautious of anyone under the tutelage of Rainier…

I have to say that this is probably more interesting to me then the original was.  That’s quite an accomplishment too because the original is a classic now.  Still with this issue’s focus on Rainier we get a much better look at him and his relationship with Malakai, all from his point of view.  So this is honest, brutal and exactly what we wanted to see even if at times it makes you shudder.  Still the way that J.T. does the characterisation here is superb and that he’s a villain and man we’re not supposed to like well we are given more than ample reason.

Also let’s consider for a moment that before the world was rewritten that Rainier had no arms and legs and yet thrived.  Now with his whole body intact and the means and knowledge of the Samusara and minions like Onyx and Spark it seems he’s in a much greater position to do more damage.  He’s quite literally a new man and as such we shouldn’t assume anything about him, well other than he’s evil that goes without saying.

Giuseppe and Wes do some really nice work on the interiors here.  I like the way it looks, the tone, the mood and feel of of the characters and the classic colouring of the hair and wings tie it to the past but also keep it moving into the future.  The use of page layouts through their angles, perspective and yes including backgrounds here we get so much more understanding.  This is how the two should work in sync to tell a story in a way where the sum is greater than it’s parts.

While I look forward to Malakai learning the truth behind the motivations of his benefactor for now i’m okay with how things are going.  I like this direction where Malakai is the inadvertent hero and is unaware of his destiny, lost and alone without his friends to help guide him it’s much more interesting in my eyes.  Though I do have a feeling that Malakai’s world will soon come crashing down around him if the events that close this issue are any indication.

We’ve seen various companies try to streamline their universe or merge all their multiple dimensions into one with varying degrees of success.  Yes Aspen had less to work with but that didn’t stop them from doing this the right way.  Including putting out the all new books featuring their characters and where they fit into the new scheme of things.

Fathom may be the company’s best known but J.T. and crew are making a strong case for putting out their best!

1798: John Abbott is dispatched to Nassau, where he meets with the victims of the simmering trade war--the Merchant Ship Captains.  With a work ethic that borders on obsession, John takes it upon himself to arm their fleets.

Okay so that this series keeps jumping a few years ahead with each issue and ya know what somehow some way Brian manages to make this work beautifully.   John Abbott from his introduction has been a most unusual character and that never changes regardless of the year, the ship needing work or where in the world he finds himself.  His friendships, love interest and family may make him the man he is regardless.

We’ve known Brian can weave a tale almost like no other but there’s something special about John.   He’s a complete enigma in this day and age.  Living with and being best friends with a freed black man, whom also works on the ships in the yard and competently so.  Their familiarity with each other comes through their actions, speech and dialogue it also almost raises the question of lovers.  I don’t believe that for a moment, not that it wouldn’t be interesting, but since he refuses the letters of the woman he loved and the two do have that odd connection and being so close it’s in the universe.

I think his life, where he goes and ultimately what he’s decided to do by the end of the issue make him one of those who could take away the title “most interesting man in the world.”  if you’ve never read this I urge and implore you to find it because this is one of those experiences that you never forget.  It’s totally awesome to see these figures going about their business while the history of our fledgling nation unravels at the same time, complete with accurate timeline of events.  It’s almost as if this is a history book come to life for us only centering on a family told as if it were through diaries of actual events.

If anyone has ever wondered about Andrea’s skill, talent and sheer chutzpah as an artist and illustrator they should see the work here.  The attention to detail is astonishing, the realness of the different ships of the era, the clothing the faces and facial expressions that go with the body language all just boggle the imagination.  I really feel like we’re having an authentic experience through what we see and i’m thrilled and amazed by it.

The history of our nation as told through these characters, their lives, their work, desires and needs is how school should be taught.  Through stellar characterisation that allows us to feel what it would’ve been like to be one either side of the coin, and to find a passion that allows you to see the world.  Granted the fourteenth state comes into being in this issue but still the world’s a big place and we are far from being the playground bully we are today, no then we were the new kid on the playground being bullied.

I don’t know what anyone else thinks but for my money this is the contender for limited series of the year.

The crew of The Rocinante finds themselves at the center of an interplanetary conflict that threatens to destroy all of human civilization. But before our team were heroes, and before there was The Rocinante, our crew were just a bunch of ice-haulers on a third-rate ice trawler called The Canterbury. And these are the stories of the winding roads that led to The Cant…

Okay wow this was a story I wasn’t expecting.  I guess when we learn of people’s backgrounds and their motivations for what they do we don’t always expect things to have such tragedy and sorrow involved.  I mean I get it when you are a pilot and spend all that time away from home your downtime is what’s special right.  Though when your own son doesn’t know who you are and doesn’t care to spend time with you that’s gotta hurt like the dickens.

The characterisation here is phenomenal.  I mean i’m sorry but his wife throughout all this is a bitch.  Personally had I been Alex i’d have left her a long time ago, and if your son doesn’t remember you are think highly of you then your wife is basically saying you aren’t worth it to her to remind your son how great you are.  Nope from everything I see here he’s a better man than I because i’d have lost it earlier.  I’m sorry the story went in the direction it does, but it ends like it should and we understand why he’s on the Canterbury.

I like the artwork here. I like how page layouts are utilised through angles, perspective and even backgrounds or lack thereof.  Without anything on the walls to show why show them at all right?  There are so many clues in this book as to the life he was leading and how miserable he was before coming to that realisation.  The artwork is great because it shows that off in ways that you can see clearly.

I’m impressed if this is based on the books then i’m going to have to start looking for them because this has seriously piqued my curiosity.  The characters are and have been interesting, complex and from many different places in their lives.   I mean I like that Alex is able to go through what he did, come out of it a better person and reconnect with what he loves to do.  Not many people once they end that chapter of their lives get the opportunity to go back and rekindle that passion.  So that he has go through the heartbreak and hardship to get there makes him that much more interesting a man to me.

I’ve not seen or read anything regarding the Expanse prior to this Origins series.  It has succeeded in doing what we the creators want it to, it has garnered interest in the franchise as a whole and makes the reader, hopefully more than just myself, have that desire to seek it out.  Then on the other hand fans of the franchise have got to be loving this look at these characters before they met them.   Exciting to discover for the first time as is is to diversify your existing knowledge.

The Magdalena #3

The Magdalena vol.4 #3
Top Cow Productions/Image Comics 2017
Written by Tini Howard & Ryan Cady
Illustrated by Christian DiBari
Coloured by Mike Spicer
Lettered by Troy Peteri

Maya Dos Santos--Enthusiastic, but foolhardy--in her first battle, she accidentally frees the demon Beelzebub…  who was summoned by this guy--Weyer Blackwood, Anaheim’s resident wannabe Crowley and master of Black Magick.  Maya’s training has gotten off to a rocky start, though, with local sorcerer Weyer Blackwood summoning demons to challenge the two at every turn…

I’m still enjoying this whole transition of power story.  Granted we don’t know if Maya really will be the new Magdalena or if Patience will find her faith once again by the time it’s over and ya know what that’s okay.   Either way i’m okay with what happens and there’s also a part of me that thinks perhaps Maya can be take over the mantle and Patience be her guide through it all.  She could use an advisor and trainer until such a time that both or either one feels such a relationship is no longer necessary.  There are a lot of options as to where this story can still be heading and we’re in issue three so it’s great that Tini and Ryan can generate this much story and this much interest in seeing it through to it’s current conclusion.

While Christian and Mike do some nice work on the interiors I do really miss the more detail oriented stuff.  This boils down to personal preference because the work they do is nice and the way that perspective and angles are used throughout the page layouts are nicely done.  I just wish there was tighter, more detailed work here instead of the more vague and early in your career looking work.    I could just imagine what those demons would look liked decked out in that mad detail compared to impression they give off here.   I can’t get away from the whole feeling vague looking at it sorry.

I do like the way this is being structured.  Yes we go through a few days worth of fighting this issue and things move along fast until they get to a certain point and it stops so we can see the moment.  It kind of has that effect where we see the training, we get the right impression and nothing of significance happens so we can gloss over without missing anything.  We see enough thanks to the direction of the story and the artwork that it makes sense to move it along in the manner in which it was done.

So that we see the latest battle with Weyer changes the scope of things.  It also seems to have captured the attention of others so that the shadows are being abandoned and the fight is out in the light.  Something you don’t expect from Demons but then this whole issue is and isn’t behaviour i’ve come to expect from Demons.  I like that too, the guys really do impress with how they are telling this.  While some aspects are what we’ve come to expect others aren’t and the way they blend them well it’s why we keep coming back for more.

The story of the Magdalena is a complex and interesting look at faith, the women in the line and how they come to terms with what’s expected of them.  Always changing, never stagnant and always fascinating.
