Meanwhile, the anarchist agitator Alexander Ossipon (Monday) has been taken to the Tower of London by Secret Police chief Caleb Croft and tortured to death by his turncoat comrade Gabriel Syme (Thursday). Penelope Churchward has been appointed by the Prime Minister Lord Ruthven to oversee the Committee for the Jubilee, which convenes at the Tower. After the gruesome death of her companion, Clovis, Penny seeks out his killer… and is surprised to encounter the Master of the Tower, the ancient and reputedly dreadful vampire Graf von Orlok.

Part of me is both fascinated and a tad disappointed that Nosferatu should look like his classic black and white appearance and yet be in such a cartoon, animated style.  How much more terrifying would be be if it were more serious a look on him than what we’ve got.  On the uptick it does certainly tell us this is an alternate history story where he’s concerned and his inclusion in this story is delightful.  Though we aren’t really very sure whom he is supposed to be considering he doesn’t talk and there’s another reference made to Dracula, Vlad the Impaler being his best friend so who knows what role he’s really playing here.

As for the story itself, with traitor’s and this upcoming party and not less than three factions with their own plans things are moving along and not yet making a lick of sense to me.  I love that because it just means that as we learn about these characters and the world they inhabit we begin to see where the power struggles lie.  Some want power others want to be free and then there are a few who we aren’t too terribly sure about.  It’s really a very interestingly written story it doesn’t feel like one we already know in terms of how it’s structured and things are revealed and it’s rather refreshing in that regard.

The interiors are a bit too animated or comic booky for my tastes with something of this nature i’d love to see more oomph and be scared but then I still can’t figure out if this is comedic horror.  Regardless the way page layouts are utilised through their angles, perspective and use of backgrounds here is very nicely done.  The Walrus Man and the way some vampires look show off the creativity and imagination of Paul extremely well.  Oh and yes the Asian faction sigh it’s so beautifully rendered to see that old vampire so regal in his chair and outfit!

I’m enthralled by this world, so much I got the first book!  I love that this is unlike anything else from its premise to its execution.   That the characters have these wonderful personalities and we can find those we love and those we hate so easily alongside being able to relate to having someone in power that we don’t agree with it all just swirls around together and forms that perfect storm.

Once he was a great hero on Earth, but now Aric of Dacia has been conscripted into the Azure army as a lowly foot soldier.  With a ragtag team of outcasts, Aric has managed to not
only survive, but to thrive in the most desperate of battles.  The canny Azurian General sees potential in Aric and his team and assigns them a seemingly impossible mission: they must breach the imperial city and disable the Cadmium defenses.  Against all odds the team succeeds…

I’m not entirely sure what it is about this particular story that I find so fascinating.  It has the innocence and wonder of the original Star Wars franchise when it hit theatre’s but it also has the angst and depravity that we find ourselves immersed in today.  Somewhat of a contradiction or oxymoron if you will but regardless there’s an inherent fascination to how Matt is telling this that we cannot escape from.

Aric would like to think he’s run away from Earth to find a quiet peaceful and tranquil existence only to have trouble find him again.  Sure no one wants to admit that they seek it out, they never feel more alive than in the midst of battle.  Somewhere in between lies the truth Aric is seeking and i’m beginning to wonder if he’ll ever come to see that.  It doesn’t help that his suit, which was designed as a weapon and something that bonded with him because of his inherent nature, doesn’t shut up and fills his mind with the violent version of his truth.  Still what else is a giant space opera of good versus evil other than essentially one man’s journey to find out the truth about himself?

At first I opened up this issue and thought WTF is going on with the artwork.  Then I realised it’s David’s signature style and it has a purpose, meaning behind it and it’s lovely to see.  His unique style and the narration to accompany it leave the imagination working in overdrive.  Then of course we get to the detailed work that also has a different painted on style that brings the characters, battle, alien landscape and a plethora of emotions to life.  The contrast is stunning and works on so many levels.  The way page layouts are utilised through angles, perspective and those backgrounds are powerfully done and provide that impact we want and need to see and feel in this.

I find myself wondering how long this can last?  Aric in space, once again, by choice this time running away from his life on Earth seems cowardly in a way.  Tired of all the violence and fighting he finds himself once again caught up in a conflict not his own.  Since his abduction he’s lost his way of life, family, friends and though he’s found a purpose it isn’t one he was seeking and the inner conflict within his mind well it’s time for that to be his main focus.  So how can that happen when he’s in the midst of making new friends whose lives he has saved and will follow him into any battle?  Is he nothing more than a leader of men destined to fight the good fight whether he likes it or not or is there more out there for him to experience?  Who knows but in the meantime his journey is wonderfully authored.

My god i’ve never been this invested in Aric’s life and adventures before.  All those intangibles that make a book, man and creative team find that spark have aligned here.

It was a time of unspeakable evil, and a time of incorruptible heroes.  The world danced on the precipice of Apocalypse, and into the dawn of a new epoch of wonders.  Fascism and Democracy were slowly rising to meet one another in the greatest clash history had ever known.  It was the crucible of mankind, and all would be judged.  It was an age of dreams, and an age of nightmares.  It was the time of DOC SAVAGE.

We all know that Fashion is recycled, just look at what’s hot on the runway and see how far back it goes.  So why shouldn’t that be true when it comes to comic books?  Well it kind of is as there are only so many new, unique and different superheroes you can create anymore but that is a discussion for another time and place.  What i’m talking about is right here with Doc Savage.  Honestly i’m thankful that David has decided he isn’t going to try and update this but instead left it in the past where the characters belong but with fresh new stories that allow readers a chance to get to know the legend that he is.

Okay so this story is fun for a number of reasons which include but are not limited to the fact that Savage isn’t the man of bronze yet and that Pat’s girlfriend is Amelia Earhart the aviatrix.  The history that’s here is spectacular, from the inventions of Savage and his partners to the real life people they encounter everything about what David is doing here screams alternate history and it’s done in such a way that reminds me of the old serial’s that would appear movies.  Oh and if you have no idea about those serial’s then you really need to check out the past and what it’s led to.

Dave’s work is something I really found myself liking when he did the Chastity series for Dynamite.  Now i’m always thrilled to see when he has new work coming out.  His linework, attention to detail and eye for storytelling are so strong and pleasing to the eye.  Oh yes and he is one of those who uses backgrounds to their fullest giving the reader a much more well rounded look at the scene and what’s going on.  The utilisation of page layouts through angles and perspective help the flow of the story move nicely.

So this issue gives us a firm look at the villain of the story as well as introduces us to Pat’s girlfriend officially and possibly setting the stage for her future disappearance.  David gives us a look at John Sunlight and much like the Admiral the explanation of who he is and what he represents is perfect for those who are new to the franchise and an excellent recap for those who have read his adventures.  That’s another thing Dynamite does is that somehow these stories while remaining incredibly true to their long standing history are simultaneously new reader friendly as well.

This is a classic adventure of a classic hero and his group of friends and allies that reminds us no man is an Island and takes a village to get things done.  Or in other words, your friends are your family and they are there for you every step of the way.

After falling victim to attacks they couldn’t smell coming, Logan and Sabretooth are on the run from adamantium cyborgs imbued with their acute senses, reflexes and razor-sharp claws.  However it’s not just Logan and Sabretooth being hunted--their mysterious enemy has already captured Lady Deathstrike and Warpath!

This issue we welcome Domino to the proceedings.  I have got to say Greg is doing and incredible job here bringing this together.  It’s fast but not too fast and feels like it’s moving at just the right pace.  It’s great for the current ADD population and it works for those of us who like to see things play out in a more natural manner.   I’m not sure what it says about Lady Deathstrike and Warpath considering they’ve already been captured while Logan and Sabretooth are on the run.

I haven’t been all that thrilled with what Marvel’s been putting out but this one feels a lot different from the norm.  Something i’m always on the lookout for.  This particular grouping of characters all have things in common sure but it’s not like they would make the likely stars of a shared book.  That alone was enough to get me in the door.  Greg is pretty freakin amazing at what he does too and the characterisation and the way he’s letting us know about these characters is spectacular work.  I mean this version of Logan and Sabretooth is the Odd Couple and it works because beneath the animosity is that grudging respect for each other.

Greg, Jay and Ibraim do some wonderful work on the interiors.  I really like Greg and Jay as a team and the work they are putting out is some of their best in a very long time.  The emotion that comes off the pages here is marvelous!  Also Ibriam is able to seamless work his stuff into the issue without it all feeling as if the works been spit up.  The use of page layouts by utilising angles, perspective and backgrounds is extremely well done.

I like how Domino is introduced this issue.  She’s one of those who would have probably been able to get away on her own but the timely intervention of the boys certainly worked in her favour, or rather how her powers work.  Speaking of how powers work I found it much more interesting to see how Greg went about explaining these things to us as the story unfolded and we saw how skilled they can be.  I think the elevated use in how they behave while evading the cyborgs shows a maturity to the characters i’m not used to seeing.

I think the direction this book has been taking has exceeded any and all of my expectations.  It’s smartly written & executed with some dynamic interior artwork.  Just keep it out of the mishegas that is the Marvel U crossover stuff and let it ride and it’ll be a stand out series for sure!

Bubble Comics 2017
Written by Roman Kotkov & Evgeniy Fedotov
Illustrated by Anna Rud

Andrey, Kseniya and Wolf travel across the Collar of Worlds to defeat evil gods and monsters.  Also Andrey has a magic sword that he received from Koschel the Immortal!  This sword hides incredible power--and what’s more, IT CAN TALK!  Let’s see if it helps our heroes defeat the dreadful and terrible Minotaur!

I found this book by sheer accident and i’ve been enjoying it immensely so far.  Bubble Comics for those that don’t know is Russia’s largest comic book publisher, according to their website.  Now i’d love to read more of their stuff but I don’t have access to them or first issues to get me started.  I think it’s amazing for a number of reasons among them is that it doesn’t matter what country you are from comic books are comic books.  They all take the same effort, love and determination to make and in similar styles.

The originality and creativity on display here comes from a different culture and a different point of view.   One thing is certain is that history is history and the Minotaur is a universally known being.  Now our trio needs to take out this godlike being, and he is because we saw him be created by the villain using Ichor than be abandoned because he went from celestial to bestial.  I think these guys do an incredible job writing this, from the way it’s structured to how it flows and the reveals that come when the need to are extremely well done.  I really am enjoying getting the chance to see these characters engage with each other and use their abilities to their fullest.

Anna and Anastasiya do some really nice work on the interiors.  Yeah i’d like more backgrounds but we do see them used well.  The Minotaur and the trio are well represented and the way angles and perspective are used alongside the page layouts is nicely done.  The sense of movement, style and panache they bring to the characters through their powers and the huge reveal is a marvelous thing to see.

Andrey finally uses his sword that he’s been communicating with.  I won’t say anything more about it but there’s a reason he’s been afraid of it and apparently rightfully so.  It’s both amazing and terrifying to see in action and I can’t wait for more!  The potential that unleashed in this story makes me quiver in anticipation.

I’m thrilled to be introduced to some great Russian comics and their language, culture and way of life.  The more I see the more I want and the story is great because we are seeing three very different individuals working together for their own reasons and have to learn to have each other’s back.  It’s either that or die.  It’s a well crafted, solid comic be on the lookout for Bubble Comics folks!

    Hot Diggity Undead Damn!

Last issue we learned about how things have been working in this town between the Vampires and the humans.  Only there was an altercation one that led to a vampire's death and set off a chain reaction for what’s to come.  I’m not entirely sure why anyone would turn a family of rednecks into vampires but heck here we are and mighty glad someone did.

While we aren’t getting into the details per se we are learning more about the BBQ joint that JV and them own.  It’s actually a pretty sweet setup raise cattle, sate your thirst on their blood when you kill them for the meat and have humans run the business to keep it all legit.  The way that Donny keeps expanding this little world is fantastic.

Speaking of fantastic the characterisation here certainly qualifies.  It should also come as no surprise who has quickly emerged as my favourite character either.  Though Granpa might come in as a dark horse if we ever get a chance to really see him!  Perry is one of the most delightful members of this family, i’m dying to know when she was turned since it’s obvious she hasn’t hit puberty yet however she’s not afraid to speak her mind and is far more intelligent than any of the men around her.  Oh yeah and she’s got that mind power too that only granpa has.

I have to say it doesn’t really surprise me that a so-called man of the cloth is the reason this story is taking a sideways turn.  Them religious freaks think they are above the rest of us and can pick and choose what parts of the bible apply to them as they claim piousness and righteousness.  When you start adding into the mix those backwater preachers who use snakes and such in their sermons you know you are in for a world of judgmental hurt.

Oh my lurd seriously you’ve got vampires on one side and that pentecostal preacher and his followers on the other side and all of em have necks as red as colour of blood.  This here’s the reason why this book is so damn enjoyable because it doesn’t pull punches, it isn’t trying to appease anyone it’s just no holds barred solid depiction of this backwater town.

I’m still trying to decide on Lisandro’s interior work.  I mean on the one hand there are times it looks like a child did it versus those moments when characters strike you as they should with that oomph.  It’s got this odd quality to it that is both fascinating and infuriating like someone’s trying to make the new Cartoon Network animation style a legitimate art style in a more serious manner.  It’s contrasts itself at times and yet it seems to fit these characters and this world.

Oddball, weird and totally without apology that’s the kind of storytelling being done here, boy is it a good time to be reading comics!

Plastic #2
12-Gauge Productions/Image Comics 2017
Written by Doug Wagner
Illustrated by Daniel Hillyard
Coloured by Laura Martin

Last issue introduced us to Edwyn and Virginia and the circumstances that led to him being where he currently finds himself.  I have to say that never before has crazy been as fun and interesting as it is right here and i’m so thankful for that.

Doug took a story that could have very easily turned into a camp mess and made into something both terrifying and highly entertaining.   One the one hand that someone like Edwyn would exist is cause enough for alarm and that his urges are controlled by Virginia, the love of his life, well okay we can see that happening.  I think many of us have seen weirder things on My Strange Addiction, or at least the commercials for it.

So that Doug can make Edwyn come off as semi-normal and somewhat likable and a victim in his own right well that’s something I wasn’t expecting.   I will say that he makes a new friend this issue and one that helps him think things through logically and that’s another aspect of him that’s odd and interesting.  The characterisation here is so strong and good that it’s impossible not to like what’s happening in these pages.  It’s easy to see why both the first and now second issues have gone back to print as more and more people find out about this series.

Daniel and Laura do some great work in the interiors here.  I love the facial expressions and how they keep the characterisation going in unexpected directions.  The utilisation of page layouts here is fantastic!  The way angles and perspective are used to create the ebb and flow of the story and the attention to detail that we see is superb in fleshing out the scenes.  I’m a big proponent of using backgrounds and to see them done here like they are is wonderful and really gives that something extra.

That the story is offbeat, twisted and all kinds of fascinating and that it keeps moving, growing and evolving is excellent.  I love that Doug isn’t content to just let the initial story play out but instead is expanding roles and influence of those we’ve been introduced to.  That he’s making this much bigger and potentially setting the stage for a sequel is another bonus.  It’s nice to see that a writer thinks more about the world he’s creating than just what’s in front of the reader.

This is one heck of a great book.  It will capture your attention, interest and imagination in ways that will surprise and thrill.  By the end of the story I wonder who we’ll be rooting for as we see who the real bad guy is and who just wants to be left alone to live their life.  Oh yeah and watch out folks because Virginia is missing and that’s going to set Edwyn off in ways that could be unimaginable.

An original farce that will take you to the brink of laughter and edge of madness!

Batman The Shadow #2
DC Comics/Dynamite Entertainment 2017
Story by Scott Snyder & Steve Orlando
Written by Steve Orlando

I cannot believe how much fun this is!  I mean c’mon after all the years these two characters have been around, even briefly sharing a publishing company, and this is their first team-up?!?   Well with Scott, Steve, Riley and Ivan at the helm of this ship it goes so far beyond any kind of expectations I could have had.

Seriously I mean the characterisation here is utterly astounding.  From Bruce’s Vulcan like logical mind unwilling to accept that which cannot be easily explained to the fact that The Shadow comes across as the Sane Insane Joker type.  Seriously all mystical, laughing and crazy and incredibly long-lived yeah it’s just one of those depictions where time has warped his perspective and made him seem more odd than usual.

God Rileys’ work on this book is stunning.  His style is a match for not only Bruce but Batman and the rendition of The Shadow just blows my mind.  His eye for storytelling through page layouts utilising angles, perspective and those all important backgrounds continues to impress and bring life to the story.  The ebb & flow he creates through what we see enhances the experience.  Then there’s the outfits, Batman’s new look looks good here and the way the red scarf swirls around The Shadow is both fascinating and creepy.

It’s not just the main characters that have some incredible characterisation here either.  Lamonts former colleagues whom Batman already interviewed get to shine here as well.  I love that we see them giving him a piece of their minds like they do, it’s that long term friendship which grants you the familiarity and ability to be brutally honest with someone.  Something that Batman doesn’t really have with anyone.

The intricacies of this story are extremely well done.  The way that the story progresses and our main characters are still not exactly working together but not completely at odds either.  It’s that gray area where Bruce doesn’t know what to do and that alone is more than worth the price of admission.  I mean how often does someone stupefy him?   This is the way I want to see Batman portrayed, not the know it all, plan for every occasion but one who is smarter than average and prides himself on using his intelligence to defeat his foes.

It’s not surprising that DC’s best stories right now are coming out of inter-company crossovers.  They stretch the way we see these characters outside of their normal parameters and that’s more exciting than all the reboots in the world.   This is an incredibly good story with some amazing interiors.

Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #2
Marvel Comics 2017

After a misguided turn as a supervillain, Ben is looking to get back on his feet.  But things haven’t been easy for him.  With no resources, he went to Las Vegas and asked for help from the mother of one of his NEW U patients, Cassandra Mercury, as singer and casino magnate.  She was hardly happy to see him…

I hate to say this but it’s the nature of the beast when it comes to Marvel and that’s that I don’t feel like A. this series is going to last and B. I want Kaine to come out of it with a series of his own.  I say that because well let’s face it in this day and age with everything Marvel spouts in public if this makes it past six issues i’ll be shocked.  Doesn’t matter that Peter David is writing it, which is a strong reason I am, or his success at the company it’s about bottom line and it’s never given a chance to see what it could be.

Now i was pretty critical of the first issue of this, I for one am tired of the revolving door deaths that are way too prevalent in comics.  Besides Kaine is my Scarlet Spider and I was kind of sad that a new Clone Saga, tres original (NOT), brought him back to reclaim the name.  Though I will admit I might have been a tad hastey.  With issue two in the books and the characterisation, plot development and characters involved I think i’m in for the long haul.  Ben is an opportunist and that he’s an aspect of Peter and Kaine adds a dimension to this I wasn’t expecting.  Plus Kaine is after Ben so there’s that bonus as well.

Peter is fleshing these characters out and giving them their own unique personalities, motivations and desires.  I like it actually and the fact that Ben having Peter’s memories and his scientific knowledge well maybe he can actually do good if he applied himself, and god knows he needs to do something about Cass’s daughter if he hopes this new life he’s seeking will get off the ground floor.

Mark and company do some solid interior work here.  I’ve always been a fan of Mark’s and his eye for storytelling, utilising page layouts through their angles, perspective and the way he uses backgrounds or doesn’t depending on what is going on in the panel.  He’s an accomplished and riveting storyteller and I enjoy seeing him bring these characters to life even if they’ve got that disease that seems to be eating away their faces.

Well this is more interesting than I was initially prepared for.  I wanted to hate it because it’s Ben but I can’t.  Peter’s writing and the way he can craft a tale, see structure a story, simply doesn’t allow for those feelings.  Instead I now hope that this series stays far away from the reality of the Marvel Universe, Peter Parker and that mishegas that is Secret Empire and instead just continue on telling this fascinating and little more than slightly odd story.

Wonderland Birth of Madness One-Shot

Wonderland Birth of Madness One-Shot
Zenescope Entertainment 2017
Written by Dave Franchini
Illustrated by Renzo Rodriguez

Before Alice, before the madness, there was a peaceful realm of dreams called Wonderland.  This is the story of corruption, the birth of madness, and how the realm of dreams became the realm of nightmares.

Sometimes you don’t know that you need to know the story of how something has come to be.  It’s just accepted that it is and has been for seemingly ever.  But there was a time when Wonderland wasn’t a madhouse it was a happy place to be and that alone makes everything we know about Wonderland come into question.

Actually I like the idea behind this story.  From the sisters the source of the corruption it really weaves a tale that explains how such depravity came to Wonderland.  There’s a double edged sword to the work that Dave does here and it’s that I WANT to talk about what we learn inside but if I do then I spoil the whole thing but I REALLY want to.   I will say this much I really enjoy seeing the pre-madness Wonderland and the hints that the Madness which comes to infect it isn’t really that far from some people’s truth’s.

The characterisation here is extremely well done.  Meeting two sisters who seem to be at the center of it all much like Mother and Daughter Liddle kind of set the precedent for what we’ve come to expect.  Also it took a second read through before I noticed that character sitting on the mushroom smoking his hookah is much more traditional than we’ve seen in these pages.  Ah the innocence of a pre-madness Wonderland might have been magical and wonderful but it seems predictable, boring and stagnant.  Perhaps i’m wrong and someday Dave will revisit this world he’s introduced us to and we’ll see.

Lenzo and Leonardo interior’s here left me with a mixed feeling.  I liked the imagination and creativity that’s on display.  Didn’t care for the skirts so short we can see her camel toe undies I mean I know it’s Zenescope but I thought we were getting away from that.   I mean we can tell a wondrous story without making the men fully dressed and the women slutty as hell or just make everyone look slutty as hell.  There’s also this really cartoony style going on here that kind of lessens the impact for me, more so when we see faces that seem to change shape from panel to panel so it’s look like the same person is a different person in each one, see Ada at the dinner table talking about the cave.

There’s potential here for stories centered around both the past, present and future that are introduced through this one-shot.  A new world of possibilities to be explored alongside some new chills and thrills as that which awakened the madness is now revealed.  I have to say putting that character in that role was a stroke of genius because of everything now that is available from it.  Also I have one nagging question that remains when did Madness become cause for wholesale slaughter?  Craziness, silliness and a disassociation from reality sure I get it but that Madness equates to murder sprees is a bit of a stretch i’d like different definition of why the world became so bloodthirsty, which is another interesting avenue to go down.
