Independence Day #2 (of 5)
Titan Comics 2016

While the world celebrates humanity’s apparent victory over its extraterrestrial invaders, another alien vessel - quite unlike any seen before - has been discovered deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean, prompting a top-secret investigation by the US military. Captain Joshua Adams, along with Dr. Jessica Morgan of the President’s Advisory Council, have established contact with a ballistic sub, with the hopes of studying the craft up close and determining its purpose. Accompanied by an outfit of highly-trained marines, Adams now prepares to explore this vast organic labyrinth. But upon boarding, it becomes immediately apparent that this new vessel is far from abandoned....

With the new movie coming out in two months it makes sense to explore things further here.  What a wild movie the original was and Victor has found a way to keep that initial invasion going after the events of the movie so personally i’m loving every minute of this.  That we aren’t really focusing on any of the major characters give them the chance to get some new fresh, storytelling in and do it in a way that honours the source material while being wildly original.

I love the interior artwork here!  These suits or exoskeletons the aliens wear and those appendages they’ve got work really well visually on the page bringing that menace, fear and that creepy alien feeling to life.  While the special effects in the movie were impressive this is much more frightening to me and so I applaud the entire art team here in doing that.  Oh and also the attention to detail throughout, the backgrounds and just the eye for powerful visual storytelling from page to page, panel to panel.

The characterization here is pretty incredible among these Marines.  The almost feel like they are the early progenitors of the ones see in the Alien franchise.  So yeah know one Marine know them all but seriously I do really like how they are individuals, teammates and family here.  What the mission is and what evolves to while being totally different both represent some serious complications that will and should arise.  So the way the story is progressing has me excited to see what’s next.

So there are moments you expect and there are definitely some you don’t so reading this is hoot.  There’s something to be said for taking movies and television shows and expanding on what we already know into something much more dynamic and in this case thrilling.

While the original was at it’s core a disaster movie Victor’s picked up on that and is using some similar elements to mix into this science fiction/horror/action thriller.  I’m really very much enjoying this and I gotta say with the new movie on it’s way i’m sure we’ll have more things to explore with this world as Humans and these Aliens continue to fight for the dominance of Earth.

This isn’t going to be for everyone so if you like to hop up on your soapbox, find reasons to be offended (way too many of you out there) or just don’t have an open mind skip this.  This is for those who want compelling, thought provoking, stark and honest storytelling regardless how difficult at times it is to read.  I’m a pretty open minded person at least i’d like to think so and there were times I got uncomfortable with what was happening but in all honesty that’s part of what I found so gosh darn good about this issue.

Derrick who likes to go by D-Trick is a black youth who is a tagger, a street artist whose mother is in jail leaving him and his sister in the custody of his Aunt and Uncle.  He runs with a rough crowd and looks the part of what we’ve stereotyped as a gang-banger.  The saggy jeans showing off his boxers, the hoodie with the hat and the attitude to go with it, an angry young man.  However he’s not a bad kid as the characterization this issue shows us.  I’m really rather impressed with Jimmie’s writing here with this.

I like his Aunt and Uncle who want the best for him and have a little trouble relating to him and with the family stuff that goes on here it’s easy to see that he’s basically a lost soul.  He’s looking for where he fits in the world.  His little sister, Tanzia, is ten and half years old and likes to think she’s smarter and wiser than her years and with what they’ve been through out of the mouths of the young certainly applies.

The events of this issue demonstrate how a young man like him can be seen in an area of town that well isn’t his usual stomping grounds.  However when an accident is going to occur and his powers kick in he acts like any hero would and instead of being heralded for his actions he’s treated like a criminal.  The social injustice is prevalent and it’s a shame but unfortunately that’s how things happen to go in this modern world of ours.  What I do like is that the woman he went to see and try to make things right with as well discuss their connection while also reticent about things is an ally of sorts.

Jimmie gives us the whole perspective, from all sides so that there isn’t just one seen or focused on here.  I have to say that the way the media is portrayed here is also pretty accurate in creating sensationalist stories that prey on race as it’s focus.

Jimmie’s artistic talent should be noticed as well.  With everything being done by him should be applauded since you see everything as it’s intended.  The way the story flows and the impact on what he wants us to see is meticulous.

Very much a modern story where how we see and interact with each other is spotlighted in such a way that it sends a very powerful message.  People could learn so much from this if they go into it with an open mind and leave wanting to help change the future.  Plus throw in superpowers and well heck that’s just icing on the cake.

There’s something I noticed after reading this issue that really hit home.  I like this sticks to the guys and it’s Will who sees what’s really happening.  As a kid who’s mind is still growing, developing and isn’t set in it’s ways he can see what the adults can’t and it’s a lesson that’s as important today as it was then.  I mean to dismiss his opinions like was done here because as an adult you know better well that’s not only a disservice but you also forget how you were at that age.

This story is making me look at the original show with more respect and admiration.  These aliens that are putting the boys through their paces took out the Robot and is keeping their eyes on them to see how they react.  Watching them run a maze much like we’d put mice through to see their reaction and if they have some form of higher intelligence.  The parallel is startling and extremely poignant.

I know the special effects back then were less than stellar but I have to say this story is one that would’ve made great television.  The characterization here is pretty darn spectacular and seeing Don get frustrated and leave because the Professor was listening to his son was great.  I mean c’mon he was eye candy first and foremost but seeing him react like this just reminds the reader of someone they know, yes we all know someone who thinks they are right, has the plan that will work and doesn’t listen.

I never did realize how Will Robinson was really the star here.  Which is kind of funny considering the cast itself.  After fixing the Robot I was surprised that his young mind that is sharp as a tack didn’t pick up what I did.  Then again i’m reading the story he’s “living” it and that’s whole different perspective.  Still I do like that nuggets give off here and after Will mentioned what he noticed when he was younger and the words the Robot says yeah that he doesn’t make the connection is wild.

Aside from the writing and the properties American Gothic Press has been impressing me with they are also introducing me to some incredible artists.  Kostas has an incredible eye for storytelling and I really like the way he’s able to use the script and bring it to life.  I like that we get to keep that original tone and feel of the series and yet at the same time have it feel kind of modern and now.  The attention to detail really is impressive.

If you ever watched the television series you’ll enjoy this, if you’ve never seen it then this a great chance to get to know what it was all about.  This is new reader friendly and is a wonderful addition to the franchise, if you discount that movie made a number of years ago.

Satan’s Hollow #2

After the disappearance of a local boy in Blue Ash, Ohio, things only seem to get stranger for new residents Sandra and John Ward. With their move into Sandra’s childhood home, there may have been more than just old memories awakened as they learn from the locals about the tunnels of Satan’s Hollow and the past cult activities. Sandra and John are trying to just fit in, but seem to be getting thrown into the middle of this local legend more than either of them know. Down in the tunnels, the being known only as the Shadow Man has been summoned and it looks like hell may be coming to this small town…

Now that i’ve read issue two i’m of a mixed mind on this one.  I love a good ghost hunting story and I love watching those kinds of “reality” shows on the television.  That Joe introduced me to a legend where I grew up that I knew nothing about impressed me.  This issue opens up with Sandra still searching the grounds for the lost boys and comes across one.  It isn’t long before Jacob tells her and her husband, John, the legend of the Hollow.  I did kind of laugh at Blue Ash Hospital instead of Bethesda North but that’s a local matter.

I mean seriously this has all the hallmarks of one of those ghost/possession/demon kind of tales that can scare the poop out of you.  As Sandra has learned of the legend and her past with all the mystery that surrounds her family grows into her “imagining” things like being called back after all these years is exciting.

Sandra finds the video from the boy she discovered and after watching it she and Jacob, who just happened to stop by and also watched it, decide to investigate the Hollow.  There really is all these classic elements that really make this something special.  The way this was crafted their experiences in the abandoned tunnels with the local sheriff's deputy it all has the imagination working overtime and that’s the scary part.  Letting the legends and circumstances and shadows creep you out.  It’s much more scary and terrifying when things happen and you don’t know if it’s real or not.

Plus there’s Sandra’s connection to this place that’s super intriguing.

Then there’s the end of the issue and it all kind of gets cheesy and goes to pot for me.  Suddenly it’s like Hellraiser and I was not a terribly happy person.  Suddenly it’s gone from this legitimately serious modern ghost story thriller to this predictable cliche of B horror flicks.  That last page just made me roll my eyes and I feel like it slides back the modern take i’ve seen in a lot of stories now from them.

I have to say though Allan, Fran and J.C. do some great work with building the whole horror mystery, what’s happening, aspect of all this.  I really like the tension on the page and emotion they can bring with their work.  The perspective, angles and shading are so well done that I really kind of got creeped out so kudos on that.

Okay so i’m dissing the ending but i’ll see what happens next issue with it but if it continues with the Hellraiser leather-esque kink i’m done.  I was hoping that frat boy mentality had gone away.

Alright so here we are getting to know Melanie more as she’s a Wraithborn and hasn’t been educated to what that means.  I’m kind of glad I missed this series first time around and that it’s fresh, new and exciting for me.  I’ll assume it’s been tweaked a bit to make it seem more now than when it came out originally and even if it hasn’t well it doesn’t show.  This has all the earmarks of television shows that I see surging in popularity on cable stations right now.

As Melanie goes to school she’s beginning to see more things that she hasn’t encountered before.  Zoe however has.  I like this girl she’s got that look about her of a teenager with her own unique style and a very voodoo/hoodoo family background.  The act she,Zoe, puts on for others is something to see that N’awlins drawl comes across incredibly well here and that’s not exactly easy to do.  Reading it out loud helps too and let’s face when it comes to accents who doesn’t read them aloud, it’s ok you admit it even if it’s to yourself.

Oh my I’m in love with both two page spreads in this issue.  Holy mother of Pearl Bailey are these strong, powerful and gorgeously frightening scenes.  There’s an almost familiar terror in the creatures we see and those that hunt for their Queen.  Joe and company bring the artwork here to some level that is hard to achieve and while there isn’t one bad image there certainly many where they stand out and capture your attention and imagination showing you a world you’d love to visit.  Kind of like when Dorothy went over the rainbow.

I do like seeing Melanie at school how overlooked she is by pretty much everyone.  There are a couple of moments in the cafeteria that really kind of define the kind of life she’s having.  So much room for continued character growth that I can’t wait to see how Marcia is going to bring her along.  She really is the lonely, sad little girl with few to no friends and she’s undergoing something so monumental and has to deal with it on her own that the empathy we feel for her is so genuine.

Now aside from the incredible characterization the story advancement is delightful.  No jumping right into it, i’m not a fan of wham you’ve got abilities and bam you know how to use them.  There has to be a build up and an understanding of the character before getting there and that is something Marcia is doing.  I’m loving the pacing and slow introduction of her abilities, potential friends, allies and teachers.

Joe is an amazing artist and he has been for quite some time.  So his eye for how all this needs to be laid out and flow through an issue is a true treat.  From the dream sequences through her life to the other world the inks and colours on his work make for some of the most dynamic and detailed illustration on stands.  The sheer amount of work we see on any give page, panel or character is mind blowing.

This is the perfect time to be bringing this back.  With so many shows based on comics or the supernatural on tv and in movies this is the kind of story that you can get lost in and quite honestly kind of shames the others.  There is nothing here that ISN’T extraordinary.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #1

Before I go into things I have to say that I was surprised by the announcement that this had already sold out and was going to a second print.  I hadn’t read it yet and it was announced Wednesday the day of release.  This is a crime caper in five parts so I do suggest you see if it is available where you shop and make sure you grab one because the hype is real and well deserved.

I adored the opening here.  No spoilers but it’s a Dungeons & Dragons game being played out and we see how it is imagined by those playing and oh my goodness the dialogue, the narration and the character synapsis are all stellar!  It also introduces us the main characters here and taking a cue from the book’s title it is indeed 4 Kids.  The characterization here is incredibly delightful I mean if you’ve ever felt like the outcast, the unpopular kid, the freak or the loser you’ll identity with this group.  Heck even if you know people like that you’ll identify it’s just that well written by Matthew.

Also the interior artwork here is perfectly done and so well suited to the story.  Kudos to Tyler for his work here, his eye for composition and how the story needs to flow from page to page, panel to panel.  Going from the D&D world to real life was kind a wow really kind of moment but does a number on the mind as it showcases the fantasy world versus their reality and it’s powerful.  Almost as much as the use of the backgrounds and certain well placed items in them that are coloured, or flatted, superbly.

Aside from the story itself which is just one of a kind in nature I love the direction and the synergy between the story and the art.  There are quite a few times when the wording wouldn’t work as well without the collaboration of seeing the character.  It’s moments like that which you really have to read the story, pay attention to in order to fully capture and appreciate.

I have to fully admit there really is something simply brilliant about how this has been put together and executed.  Things are never what they first appear to be and stereotypes well those are there but shouldn’t be used as a guideline and the old adage “never judge a book…” all apply in ways that the reader can eat up.  This is more straight up, no tricks, no gimmicks storytelling that simply is one of the most surprisingly good reads to be happened upon.

I’m not sure where this is going or how it’s going to evolve but with everything we see this issue it’s clear that these four kids are in for the adventure of a lifetime and hopefully plan on using their Dungeons & Dragons characters as a source of inspiration and courage.

This is completely awesome after reading it I felt this was a movie or should’ve been one because it seems logical that it is.  There is this special something Tom does to the story that makes it incredibly modern, gripping and absolutely pulse pounding thrilling.  That this is in black and white with gray tones is even better.  It gives the story this old school noir horror aspect that used to scare me the heck out of me, you can thank my cousins and their little black and white tv in their bedroom for that lol.

It doesn’t take long before we get a real sense of what’s going on here.  I have to admit that the timing of that makes perfect sense.  Sure we could’ve gone longer without wondering why the book opened like it did and draw out the suspense but I think this was perfect timing.  The concept behind it great it’s not exactly new or groundbreaking but by the same token it’s handled extremely well and makes things interesting.

As we get a fair amount of narration and a look at the characters in this story you see that Tom really thought this out.  I appreciate that and the fact that while it really uses some of the most known depravity we can think of it’s also very logical in how things are presented.  This is like something the mob would run if it were more effective, in fact I wouldn’t doubt that even the mob is afraid of these folks.  The whole rundown of what is going, how it works and the consequences of not following the rules well it’s the perfect kind of ruthless.

I have to say too i’m mightily impressed with the diversity of the characters introduced to us as well.  Different people of all walks of life with various reasons for being a part of this.  Some altruistic some not it does aptly demonstrate that regardless of what stage of life you are at there are some things you are willing to do that wouldn’t fit anywhere in the mainstream or within the realm of acceptable behaviour.

I’ve said i’m a fan of the black and white art but i’m also a fan of the amount of detail nathan brings to the book.  I am liking the way he uses pages and panels to keep the flow moving along.  The emotions of and expressive nature of the characters is easy to read.  I’m always a fan of backgrounds being used to set the stage to broaden the scope of what’s happening and where.  Though there are a couple times from behind I thought Timmy was a girl but hey i’m okay with that as everyone’s stance is different and unique to them.  Though that semi-bondage moment I wouldn’t have minded it going further either.

I’m almost afraid to get attached to a character here as you never know what’s going to happen.  I’m super surprised at the setting this takes place in and kind of find it genius.  While i’m not sure if they boys are only doing a limited run or not but there is a lot of room in this world for a myriad of stories. I’m fascinated, thrilled and dying of anticipation to see what happens next.

It’s hard to believe I was nine when the Micronauts were first introduced to the world.  With this being volume 5, I think, of the comics series to have been introduced it’s also the first issue i’ve ever read. For someone completely unfamiliar with any of the characters, the world they inhabit and all that jazz I gotta say i’m pretty impressed.  This was easy to get into and enjoy, then again Cullen is pretty much able to write anything and i’m guaranteed to like it.  There’s a lot going on here and plenty thrown at the readers so you wonder what’s happening while assuring that you’ll be back to find out.

Right off the bat we’re presented with a threat that could very well destroy this universe and everything in it but for now it’s like on the outskirts or at least taken with a grain of salt.  The second part of the issue delves into that and I find it both odd and interesting that the characters while aware of it and understand it may be unstoppable are treating as nonchalantly as they are.  Either way it is a rather intriguing turn of events.

So the main characters, i’m going to assume from the back of the issue detailing notes on them and character sketches, once they are introduced move the story along rather quickly.  I have to say i’m kind happy and a little mystified by it too.  I like that they are hired to do another job for someone who insists one of his own accompany them, making me think them more like salvaging mercenary types which kind of thrills me.  This alone mixes up their normal working operations as well and it’ll be interesting to see how they all react to that.

There’s an almost illegal sense about what they do and yet i’m completely sure.  I’m really liking that we aren’t getting more of this instant gratification stuff anymore.  It’s about time stories drew you in what was going on and took their time revealing more and more about them, what they do and the like.  It just makes me want to stick around longer, and no i’m not googling it or reading previews months out to know what’s going on that’s spoiler annoying to me.

We get to see a bad guy and his wife and the characterization there is pretty strong as well.  I like her she’s a piece of work alright but her husband well he’s smarter than he looks that’s for sure.  It’ll be interesting to see if he falls for her goading or sticks to his guns.

There are a lot of folks responsible for the interior artwork here and I gotta say it doesn’t feel like it.  The story flows very smoothly and it has a very nice consistency to it.  I like the attention to detail throughout whether it’s an “alien” or the clothes, the mechanical aspects you name it.  These fine folks really brought out the best in each other to make a complete book full of life, zest and adrenaline pumping action.

Smart engaging storytelling with solid characters/characterization alongside a mystery and action/adventure woven in make this more than a solid introduction to the series.

Strawberry Shortcake #1

Written by Georgia Ball
Illustrated by Amy Mebberson

Lettered by Robbie Robbins

I’ll be honest my sister was the Strawberry Shortcake fan growing up though I did like to smell those little figures.  Since then i’ve seen sporadic attempts at reviving the franchise but never paid much attention to it.  So with this new number one and being a review guy I said okay let’s see what’s up in the world of Strawberry Shortcake.

While there is a very definite audience in mind for this I found a very cute all-ages read.  The updated designs to the characters are hip and completely show off a unique individuality to the characters.  There are apparently a lot new characters as I had too look up one they called Sour, she’s Sour Grapes though she seems pleasant enough but a little opinionated.  She’s in the opening scene with Plum and another character I don’t know.

So basically the girls are trying to help the Berrykins build a new playground for the little ones.  So while discussing how they could raise funds for a new playground it’s decided that Strawberry being the best baker around is going to enter a Baking Competition.  Well everyone but Strawberry decides this is going to happen though she goes along because that is what friends do.

I like this it has all the hallmarks of friendship, optimism and hope will still kind of being realistic.  Strawberry is worried about winning and everyone else’s conviction that she has this in the bag.  It’s a very nice way of saying you can still try your best even if you doubt yourself and all your friends think you are the best.  Friendship can lift you up that’s for sure.

A familiar character is reintroduced to the world of Strawberry Shortcake as the Purple Pie Man comes back.  This is how he and Strawberry meet and we see that all isn’t what it seems here.  As the story continues you see one contestant after another eliminated from the competition through what could be considered sabotage.  But who would do such a thing and why?

Amy and Fernando make this as cute as can be.  I love that his all-ages cartoon like interiors and that the colour schemes let you know who’s who.  The shading gives of a nice dimension to the work.  It definitely gives off a positive fun vibe.

This is everything you think it is.  Cute, saccharine sweet and while not the girls I knew when I was 10 they are definitely a modern interpretation with the same message of friendship conquers all and that it’s okay to doubt yourself so long as you do your best and see what happens.

Vikings #1
Titan Comics 2016
Written by Cavan Scott
Illustrated by Staz Johnson & Richard Elson
Coloured by Rodrigo Fernandes
Lettered by Rob Stee

And so, by the will of Odin, or by his own, Ragnar Lothbrok has risen from a simple farmer in the town of Kattegat to a powerful King and one of the most feared of all Viking raiders. Defying his naysayers, he led the first raiders to England, finding a country ripe for plunder. Now, years later, Ragnar’s plans extend beyond pillage; he has sought an alliance with King Ecbert of Wessex, hoping to allow the Vikings permanent settlements on these fertile lands. But the alliance is an uneasy one and there are those, on both sides, who would see it torn asunder…

If you haven’t been a part of the cultural phenomena well here’s your chance to see what the buzz is all about.  This story takes place between seasons two and three of the show and yet it’s easy accessible to new readers and longtime fans alike.  Also there’s a guide to who’s who, with cast photo, so you know the characters in general terms before reading this which is rather helpful.

This is great for a myriad of reasons and chiefly among them is the way Cavan is writing this issue.  It’s immediately clear who the Vikings are by nature and we get a nice narration and the sense of betrayal and mistrust among one of them.  The opening narration really got to me and made me want to read more here.  I think it’s one of those underrated or often misused tools in comics but Cavan nails it in the fact that along with the imagery we listen in on thoughts that really set a tone for what’s to come.

I’m also very much into the fact that this seems to be a time when minds are expanding and at least Ragnar is trying to understand the Christians while still carving a niche out for himself.  While the Christians of this time are notorious for killing those who won’t convert the Vikings are too strong willed and skilled fighters to be cowered by that.  The resistance to living among those that believe differently is a strong theme here and seeing the two sides trying to work side by side, seemingly biding their time till a coup can happen is the kind of tension that needs to be felt here.  It comes across wonderfully too.

The amount of characterization we get here is surprising.  A lot of characters are covered and we see enough to get a good feel for all of them.  There are plenty of moments that can focus on future plot points or those side stories that flesh a world out more fully.  Overall what we get is a stellar first issue that really delves into things feet first and is as unyielding and relentless as the Vikings are famed for being.

Staz, Richard and Rodrigo wow.  First Staz lays out the groundwork here and really shows he’s a fan of the series or a darn good researcher.  The characters, their dress, their scars, tattoo’s and anything else you can think of are amazingly well detailed.  What happens back at home however has a more traditional feel but ya know it’s nice that the separation is that noticeable.  These Vikings though gosh darn they make these guys as hot, sexy, dangerous and desirable as you can possibly imagine on the page.  With the style and work i’d love to see more time spent on backgrounds but that’s just me nitpicking but I do think they add a lot to what happens in the story.

Well Titan keeps proving they are the ones to turn to when adapting a franchise to comics.  This is every bit as good and fun as the television series itself.
