Fifteen years ago, our world was overrun by creatures of myth; orcs, dragons, and other nameless horrors threw the entire planet into total chaos. Today, the shattered remnants of civilization must fight just to survive in a deadly new era of violence and mayhem. While a powerful sorcerer marshals his forces, a group of warriors embark on a journey to reclaim our world from the growing darkness.
Leave it to Jeremy to be a part of the creative team to take the world to it’s end and then start it all over again in a way we’ve never seen before. Of all the ways I could think of where civilisation as we know it ends the “return” of creatures of myth wasn’t quite in my field of vision, this is why I'm not a writer FYI. I love the idea and I have to say that I am a huge fan of how they went about bringing this to life. We don’t get to see the invasion, at least not right now, instead it’s some time later and we get to see the life that humans are living.
It’s a somewhat established way of life and one where we all know humans will rebel against if they feel enslaved. So what the boys are doing here I think is captivating in ways that not only strike a chord in the imagination it also has this effect where you find yourself thinking of ways things could have gone, will go and directions things can take. So yeah it’s one of those that brings you into the story and the world in ways that once your into the story there’s really no turning back. Personally I wouldn’t have it any other way.
With everything he’s done in his career it feels like it’s all led up to this. Jeremy really shines on the interiors here. The attention to detail he puts into this is amazing to witness, he’s able to evoke emotions and feelings by putting that detail into the backgrounds so we see the past versus the present and can somehow understand the devastation. The ways the layouts on the pages are done with the angles and perspective really bring us a great cinematic viewing quality to the story. Plus that Chicago scene brought chills and wonder at the same time and just reinforces my belief in how he’s grown and evolved as an artist.
I had to look up Seth and see if there was anything I might be familiar with that he’s done and surprisingly I am not familiar with his other work. I like his work he’s a great sense of how stories should be told, his grasp of pacing and characterisation are strong and the book is really well structured. How this issue flows and how we are drawn into Nolan’s way of life and the world he lives in is exceptionally well done. Even better is the fact that we don’t even really see the creatures of myth who’ve taken over the world yet we only see how the humans are behaving under these circumstances. Leaving plenty to the reader’s imagination and to be told as the story keeps unfolding.
Oh by the way as I’m writing this I’m singing Steely Dan so thanks for that guys. Also I do like the way that everything we see has this whole overall effect on our perception. I mean there’s plenty of the throwback in style of dress as well as seeing old buildings and new structures that make the whole thing rather eclectic. The forethought that went into creating this before we ever even saw it is clearly evident and this kind of dedication and love for the project comes through on each and every page.
Once again not only has Image found something new worthy of getting behind 1000% but for us fans to get behind just as equally. There’s a wonderfully creative and original story here that’s screaming to be told.
