I’m a sucker for historical fiction and what I absolutely adored about this issue is that if felt like it took Sleepy Hollow and Manifest Destiny and combined them to create something extraordinary.  Speaking of extraordinary Tazio’s interiors are beyond what I could have imagined or hoped for.  Such attention to detail not only where the characters are involved but with the backgrounds and page layouts all conspire to really put you in a time when they were Colonies of England and hadn’t yet formed their own nation.

The legend of George Washington and how he came to be known as the man who cannot tell a lie was done geniusly!  By infusing Native American lore with an accident that leaves him unable to be bluntly honest it is one of those rare explanations that would make his legendary persona come to life more accurately.   Seeing him with his father and being such a brash young man in need of growing up a bit well that was some excellent characterization.

Six months after the confrontation with his father and the Totem we find ourselves in Philadelphia.  George is trying to write a letter to his father to apologize for his actions but discovers he cannot accurately find the words to do so.  He’s interrupted by friend and co-worker Paul Revere.   We also meet a young lady who happens to be Lord Hammond’s niece, he’s their employer, the beautiful Lady Kate.  From England and from the looks of it she’s a woman of colour which makes for an interesting twist.

The interaction between George, Paul and Kate is really good stuff.  With George’s inability to lie being mistaken for bad manners by Kate it’s really fun oh and yes it would also seem that Mrs. Ross is head of the household staff so perhaps Betsy’s introduction isn’t going to be far behind.  George tells Kate about her uncle and his off limits study and you think about that then you know that she’s going to go directly to that study and see for herself what’s going on there and if George’s assessment of his character is correct.

We have one more character to be introduced to before this issue is over and that’s Ben, Benjamin Franklin.   As a storm approaches the boys realize this is the one Ben’s been waiting for and so they rush to find him.  You have to read this because seriously I don’t know if this is from Donn or Victor but dayum this is some great stuff.  Where they find him, oh by the by this is an adult book not suitable for younger audiences, and how they inform him of the approaching storm and what kind of man he is yeah this is utterly enthralling.   If I may if we are going to see the women like that equal opportunity would also be nice just saying it’s 2015 so full on male shouldn’t be that taboo anymore.

Kate discovers what her Uncle is all about and goes off to find George and he’s with Paul and Ben when a band of cutpurses fall upon them.  What happens here is remarkable to say the least and sets the stage for the direction this book will go.

Dark Horse has me hook, line and sinker with this one.   This is an intelligent, sassy, interesting and completely enthralling first issue introduction and it demands your attention!
