EDGE 1
Due to the sensitive nature of The Edge and its top secret classification not much is known about its origins. It is also unknown if any of the information is based on fact or fiction. It is to this day unclassified by the FDA. Without this classification it is difficult to categorize what The Edge is. It could be a steroid or an enhancement. Since the first "known" case of an Edge carrier, they have been known as the Enhanced. This name has stuck until this very day. So what does The Edge enhance? From the research that has been done over the years, The Edge appears too activate or perhaps reactivate a repressed genome. This genome enhances semi natural abilities that may or may not have been present in humans RNA. For now it is unknown why the genome is only activated in a small number of people. These abilities are not limited in their range, class, or destructive nature. Some abilities are only present through outward sources. Including but not limited to weapons and or vehicles.
I love when a new Indie Publishing House comes onto the scene, more so when it’s founder is someone whose work I am familiar with. So I knew I had to read these when they came out and we’re starting with Edge. This is a new superhero style universe and instead of watching it from the beginning we’re thrown into this already in progress and I actually prefer it this way. The character development is utterly marvellous and I like how the dialogue mixed with how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter help to flesh them out as people. The pacing is great and as it takes us through the pages revealing this world and these characters it reminds you that there’s still fun and hope in superhero adventures.
I like the way that this is being structured and how the layers within the story emerge and play their parts throughout. I think the way they navigate through the story and intertwine and then separate again is brilliantly handled. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow is truly fantastic. Considering this is Marvin’s debut I have to say the guy has some real talent to be this good on his first outing.
I am also so very impressed by the interior artwork here. The imagery that we see is clean, tight and well composed, the only thing I can say is there aren’t enough backgrounds being utilised throughout. The linework is fantastic and how we see the varying weights being utilised along with a few various techniques to create this extraordinary detail work is beyond beautiful. The composition within the panels create this great depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope for the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented and natural eye for storytelling. The colour work is phenomenal as well. To see how the various hues and tones within the colours are being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is exceptional. I’m a big fan of seeing the colours utilised to create definition as well which happens mostly with faces and hair.
Fledgling company with this being the first book, of many, that I plan on reading, reviewing and keeping everyone informed about is off to one hell of a magnificent start! There is plenty of room for diversity and creators of diverse backgrounds to put out some of the highest quality work. This is the example of why I say go to cons, go to artist alley, small press area and find books like this because you are going to be wowed, no ifs ands or buts about it.
