While I was hoping for an original story the adaptation of the first episode well i’m more than okay with that. After all it’s been awhile since that aired and honestly with this version there’s the awe, wonder and majesty of discovering it again for the first time. For those that have never watched the programme, are there any?, it’s a perfect introduction to the beginning of their relationship for longtime fans well it’s a way to reconnect with how you felt when you saw that episode for the first time.
Like any Manga this read from right to left, thank to all those years reading Hebrew i’m familiar with this and adapt easily. Then there’s what Jay. does with the interiors. I’m loving every moment of every page here. From the clothing and their patterns to the wallpaper that’s so very much iconic, to the people and the facial expressions which in Manga are so incredibly important. There’s a great flow to the story and such expressive work that you can’t help but get swept up in it. This will make a fan out non-Manga folks or those that haven’t found a reason to read and for those that love manga well this is just another reason why it’s this bloody good!
So there are moments here that you have to pay attention to I love that in the taxi they talk and Sherlock goes through the whole deal on John’s life and then learns he’s wrong about the brother being a sister. The reactions and the dialogue are focal points of the story so that they are given more pages than say the dead woman that’s found and why they are in the taxi to begin with. This also sets up those undertones that there’s always more of a sexual tension between the two that mixes with that admiration and desire that’s always made them the kind of duo where the status quo should never be broken.
The introduction of Sally Donovan and the rest of the force well that goes as well as expected. I do like it though because you are reminded just how much they dislike Sherlock and his methods. Though it really is impressive to see him at work on body like this and simultaneously talk to the Chief well it’s all handled so incredibly well. Okay so the crime scene is a very long one but it’s got so many variant lines going through it from introductions, involvement and astonishment for the deductive prowess well it’s so well adapted. Jay. has chosen the right method to go about choosing where and what to focus and how it’s represented to the reader.
Together again for the first time as we see how they both react and interact with each other as they decide if this arrangement will actually work out. Spoilers we know it does but that doesn’t lessen the enjoyment of this story. It’s one of the best script adaptations of a show that i’ve seen as it’s got the tone, mood, feel of the characters and highlights perfectly, for me, the right emotions and actions that made the duo such a powerful force in the show.
