A BABY, the rightful son of the Gerator was abandoned on the front porch of the rogues BRAM and WEASEL. The lecherous (and evil) favorite MALIKITA, wants to kill him, sending barbarians, wizards and vampires after him. But when our adventurers think they are safe... they are captured and the baby stolen
I am totally into how ridiculous and funny and off the wall just almost deadpan British-esque humor this book has. I mean from stealing the baby to having Domitus killing our bungling heroes everything has this dry thinking man’s humour to it that I appreciate so very much. Also the explanation as to what the Hole of Despair is, how it came to be and that it’s going to be their final resting place well there’s all kinds of stuff happening here and a few thrown in for good measure that if you don’t skim will make you laugh out loud.
While it has a Dungeons & Dragons world setting it’s got a bit of Monty Python humour and a slew of characters that well you’d be hard pressed to roll up for a game or find in a movie. When we go to see Magistrate Monzon whose servant Page reveals what is known thus far once again Torres does this thing where he kind of changes my mind about a character. Okay so he’s kind of a dick but he knows what’s happening and he isn’t as cold and heartless as he lets on to be so it’s this whole one minute he is the next he isn’t really does a number on the reader and keeps you guessing.
While Bram and Weasel’s characterization doesn’t much deviate even with new revelations we do get to see the characters around them grow, change and defy expectations and that’s something Torres does extremely well. His writing, grasp of characters and their development during different stages of the story do surprise us in ways that indeed keep us coming back time and again to see what’s going to happen anew.
Nacho, Sergio and Veronica do some excellent work on the interiors too. I mean when you go from the kitchy baby throwing up on Malikita to the seriousness of the Magistrate to the underground visuals Bram and Weasel find themselves in it’s so wonderfully done and the journey they take us on is magical as their work suggests. Underground the blue phosphorescent yeah that was pretty damn spectacular and a real highlight for me.
So how our intrepid duo are going to escape the Hole of Despair, will father and son be reunited in a new scheme to gain power and what is the Magistrate’s plan B? All this and more in the conclusion but for now revel in this book of fun, idiocy and slight mayhem. I’m going to reiterate this, take Dungeons & Dragons mix it with some Monty Python and a dash of Mission Impossible and that’s what you get here.
Escapism from life’s humdrum ways at it’s finest!
