Pandora's army is here. The Earth is defenceless, and war has arrived. Scarab, in Earth orbit, faces the might of the invaders first-hand, while Samson attempts to hold back an overwhelming force alone. Meanwhile, at the hospital bed of a wounded child, Black Terror must hold the line against horrifically transformed The Death-Defying Devil. P:andora wants the girl Imani dead. But why?
By Golly this is good! I love these heroes and that Dynamite got the rights to them and decided to actually do stories with them keeping their legacy alive and doing with respect. Which is more than I can say for another particular company who bought heroes of legend only to bastardise them. Rob has constructed a killer story here that puts these heroes to the ultimate test and I have to say this is why I love them, well the characters and creators here.
Rob is an extremely talented man, writer and his imagination is superb! The fact that our villain this issue if P:andora who has come to earth looking for his box is a sensational play on the legend. I have a feeling I know what he’s searching for though and so long as Imani is alive he can’t take possession of it. I love how we are getting to see more of these characters and their personalities and the opening with Masquerade is stellar stuff. It is darn sexy and really makes me feel like we get to know her and why she’s so cold now. I really believe the opening changed how I feel about her and it’s for the better. Plus guys wow I mean sexy and sensual without being cheesy or uncouth.
I am enjoying the way that this is structured. While the opening is powerful in it’s own way the rest of the book is equally as impressive. Rob has hit foot on the gas here and everything moves seemingly at light speed and yet it’s incredibly easy to follow. I adore the spotlight we get on both the Scarab and Samson! Scarab get full on attention and what I see and what we learn of him makes me want to see more of him and his network. The same is true for Samson as well when he unleashes and knows somehow that the Scarab is in trouble and leaps into action to save him yeah it was so phenomenally well done that I want to see more of him.
Then there are the interiors which lets face it is what we want to see in our superhero comics. Strong clean and crisp linwork that has been manipulated through it’s varying weights to create such attention to detail that it makes me believe. The creativity and imagination we see here is sensational and seeing that in P:andora and his cat-snake creature that’s always on his shoulder that’s some freakin wow stuff. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a magnificent eye for storytelling. The way we see backgrounds utilised here is superb as they bring us the size and scope of the book. It also fleshes out the scenes and moments beautifully.
Between the story concept and it’s execution through words and visuals this is why I continue to read and support Dynamite. This is well Dynamite stuff. The story, characterisation, plot advancement as well as these stunning interiors make the Project Superpowers team the one team book we want and have to read!
