Hyperion is the last survivor of his universe. Before the destruction of his world, he lived by three precepts: truth without compromise, thought without error and all things for the betterment of the whole. But now he is unsure of his place in this new world. Is he a hero? A murderer? While searching for answers, Hyperion meets Doll, a young runaway who begs for his help. Protecting her from mysterious super-powered carnies, Hyperion and Doll stumble across a murder scene that is inexplicably tied to her pursuers. Following a trail left behind by the murderer, Hyperion and Doll find an abandoned house in the woods--where they were ambushed.
I’ll be the first to admit I never really knew who Hyperion was. Yes i’d heard the name as part of the Squadron Sinister, Supreme etc but I never read those books. But I saw the first issue on stands and flipped through and liked the interiors so I thought okay it’s a number one let’s give it a shot. I’ve been pleasantly surprised since then at this series thus far. It’s extremely interesting and beautifully done. I like that he’s questioning his place in this world instead of automatically behaving like he did on his world. I think trying to figure out the stranger in a strange land is the smart route to go.
The characterization has been phenomenal in my opinion. The introduction of Doll and this version of a evil super-powered carnival is a great setting for him to start realizing his place in this world he finds himself in. Sometimes too much introspection can be harmful and you need another eye to see things more clearly and it looks like this all coming about in one the more organic ways i’ve seen. Plus that he’s seen more in his civvies than in his uniform has been an added bonus. All too often these characters are defined by their brightly coloured garb but this one is more character driven and that is a surprisingly nice change of pace.
I know right now a lot of folks are focusing on Cap but this is one of those titles that shouldn’t be ignored. This has some of the best writing, characterization and thought process behind it that showcases that sometimes the least hyped books are what you should be reveling in. The dialogue between Mark, Hyperion, and Doll really goes a long way in defining who they are as individuals and with each other. I am so impressed that a book with a character I knew nothing about could rocket into what I consider MUST read status.
Then there’s Nik. I am absolutely a fan of her work. Yes we understand Doll is a girl but I swear she comes across as a boy half the time and I find that fascinating and hopeful it’s on purpose. There’s more to this character than meets the eye. Her Mark/Hyperion is magnificent as we get to see the range of emotions cross his facial features. The flow of the book through it’s pages and panels are spectacularly done.
Hyperion may be one of Marvel’s strongest titles right now, maybe because it’s not so closely tied into everything else. I highly recommend this it’s as strong as a book can get!
