At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union—determined to win the Space Race at any cost—green-lit a dangerously advanced mission. It sent three Cosmonauts further into space than anyone before. Lost in the stars, they encountered something Unknown. Abram Adams–one of the three– came into contact with it. The Unknown changed him and gave him the ability to bend matter, space, and even time to his will. He became Divinity. He returned to Earth, where he was viewed as a threat, and was ultimately imprisoned by MI-6 and the forces of the west. Abram abandoned his two co-pilots in space. One of them— Myshka—has now also returned to Earth. An orphan hardened by a childhood spent on the streets of Moscow, she has returned to modern-day Russia and is appalled by what she sees.
I mean c’mon now what can’t Matt write that isn’t spectacular? He has emerged as one of if not the most versatile writers in the industry today. So Myshka came home and pledged her service to Vladimir Putin and make Russia great again. Well after we saw her story and how she ended up with the same powers of the being known as Divinity. This issue picks up with the shall we call them after effects of her intervention.
I think the opening is brilliant I mean we see the emergence of Russia as not only A superpower but THE superpower on the planet. Things start going in ways that you have to wonder what the heck is going on and that’s why MI-6 sent in undercover agents. Unbeknownst to them they have Myshka with that godlike power and she finds them and that’s when we learn who was sent in and how Unity gets involved.
However at it’s core this is a story about the two people who gained these godlike powers and when called into question Divinity joins MI-6 and volunteers to talk to Myshka. I love that scene too I mean the arrogance of any government official always makes me laugh but Neville should know better by now still I liked how this played out and it’s not only logical but a natural way for the story to proceed.
There’s great dialogue and characterization that happens this issue. You get the sense that in this world there can only be one with the Divinity power and you wonder who it will be. He is much more benevolent and laid back while she is hard, cold and vicious and that complete opposite thing is on display in such vivid ways. It’s almost like this goes beyond good versus evil and that alone means the lines and boundaries blur even more. The implications and the subtle manipulations that we see in the story really do make you think. So be prepared this is a very interactive, the story pulling the reader’s mind into it, story and it’ll leave you feeling something….
The art team is really on point here too. I like the roughness of what we see as there’s also a nice amount of detail and expression mixed in. The flow of the story is perfectly done from page to page, panel to panel. There are times when you see a tank coming apart and think how the heck can this be brought to life so realistically? So very nice job on that and other moments here.
Valiant keeps on raising the bar with what they do and as things get more intense and interesting it’s amazing to see the creators rise up, challenge themselves and us as readers.
