Mia is a special investigator hired to uncover possible sabotage taking place at a deep-sea research station. What she finds is a mind-blowing crime scene filled with suspects with terrible secrets, strange deep-sea creatures, and an impending flood!
You never know what’s going to happen when you pick up one of Matt’s books and that’s a great thing! With him and his wife doing this book it was a no-brainer to read. I love the pages here how the look and feel with the watercolour effects it really works beautifully with the ocean and water here. The premise is spectacular I mean our Oceans have been explored less than space has been and the creatures that generally live there are more alien than we can imagine so it’s a great place for a murder mystery like this!
A daughter looking into her father’s death isn’t all that unusual until well you’re asked to by the company overseeing your father’s work. Still I love listening to Mia’s assessment of the people she sees as it’s an honest insight from her point of view. Also I like the looking back and what’s gone before while we see her descending to the ocean’s floor. For me i’d be doing a lot of thinking on a ship that’s going that far down and that has to make stops along the way to adjust to the pressure.
The whole Matt has set this series up grabs the reader’s attention from the beginning and keeps drawing you further and further in with each page. There’s a very interesting and eclectic mix of characters introduced and for Mia it seems that it’s a very small world. Though that shouldn’t be surprising since this is her father’s department and passion and she’s known most if not all these folks for a good chunk of her life. I think that’s what makes this even more interesting is just literally how close to home looking into her father’s murder really is. Plus the location of the event has a lot more ramifications than first thought.
There’s really something special happening here and the fact that it’s taking place at the bottom of the ocean with no place to run or hide adds a whole new aspect to the story. Both thrilling and frightening this one of those instances that if your nerves fail you you may lose your life.
