Okay so if you’ve been following this book then you already know what I am going to say if not and you are waiting for the trade, well good on ya, but if you aren’t one of those then you need to get yourself in gear and get this series! Eric took a concept and ran with it to places that really utilised the readers’ own creativity and imagination to really sink their teeth into. So there are vampires and originally I thought that Lucas was a Lausenschlange now however we learn differently so I am completely impressed with how Eric manges to keep me as a reader on my toes throughout the run thus far.
I love the way that this is being told. How we see the story & plot development through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. Picking up where we left off last issue and seeing the brothers making their cases it’s easy to see how the Sheriff manages to stay in control of things. I’ll give him this he’s one smart cookie and understands much better than his brother what Lucas’ presence could mean in the long run. The character development that we see is phenomenal! I love how the Sheriff is fleshed out is beautifully done and then to learn more about Lucas in one of the most thrilling and chilling flashbacks ever was pure genius. I mean that too it is something that could’ve made Chilling Adventures, The Unexpected, The Witching Hour etc, etc. The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way creates this undeniable thrill seeking kind of adventure.
How we see this being structured and how the layering continues to weave in and out of the main story is beautifully done. The way we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow really is superbly done.
The interiors here are incredible to see. The linework and the varying weights that are being utilised to bring about the detail work we are seeing is beautifully rendered. I love the style that we see and personally I can see some influences in the work and I am thankful for that because it just makes this that much more to me. Granted I would like to see backgrounds utilised more, in the jail area and police station even though the shadows of the bars is a nice touch, otherwise they are utilised perfectly to enhance the moments. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling. The colour work is fabulous! How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is extremely well rendered. On a personal note that flashback, Bravissimo, Bellissimo take a bow folks because those pages and the visage of Lucas’ relatives is bloody brilliant work!
Scout Comics man this is the place to be right now. With this book as an example with how it is being written and illustrated and how that captures the readers’ mind, imagination and engages them is exceptionally well done. There’s a reason this little publishing house isn’t so little anymore and it’s growing by leaps and bounds because the level of consistency in the storytelling has few rivals.
