Weapons of Mutant Destruction #1
Marvel Comics 2017
Written by Greg Pak
Illustrated by Mahmud Asrar
Coloured by Nolan Woodard
Lettered by VC’s Joe Caramagna

Their goal is a simple one…ERADICATE ALL MUTANTS! And they're starting their hunt with the most dangerous group of mutants on planet Earth — Old Man Logan, Sabretooth, Domino, Lady Deathstrike, Warpath and…the Hulk?! But with an army of genetic cyborgs at their disposal, this may just be the beginning…

Aww crap on a popsicle stick this is everything that is wrong with storytelling at Marvel these days. Greed pure and simple.  Instead of this whole thing taking place in Weapon X where it should be there’s now a one shot (?) and crossovers with Totally Awesome Hulk that they want you to buy to continue reading this arc.  It’s gimmick and now i’m officially done with Weapon X and damn near close to Marvel in general.

The sad part of all this is that the story started in Weapon X is strong, interesting and brings back William Stryker in a way that not only makes sense but is exciting, fresh and thrilling.  But greed had to ruin that and don’t me i’m wrong because instead of leaving it in the Weapon X series they want you to spend extra money on a silly title (Amadeus Cho’s book) and this overpriced one-shot.   In all honesty there was absolutely no reason to branch it off into all these other books when leaving it in one would’ve garnered more interest and acclaim by fans, reader and critics alike.

I’m sad too because in all honesty the story is amazingly well told.  Greg’s depiction of the fractured life of Reverend William Stryker trying to work with scientists in a gated community is the stuff legends are made of.  The characterisation, plot development and story progression is so solidly put together, easy to read and follow and simply enjoy.  You see how this is all going to blow up eventually and that’s okay because it’s the getting there that you want to see more.  Now that the key players have been introduced it’s time for the roller coaster ride to begin in earnest and that’s what we want to see.

Mahmud’s an amazing artist and to see him use his talents to bring this to life is great.  The way page layouts are utilised through angles, perspective and the use of backgrounds are extremely well handled.  The tone, mood and feel of the people we see shines and the gauntlet of emotions from tedium, anger, boredom and zealousness are easily read off their faces and body language.

The use of these cyborg units to attack the characters is something I love to see and the ones from this issue well yeah that’s creative and imaginative in ways you have to admire.  It’s just a shame that I won’t be following this or the Weapon X book any further.  I refuse to be “forced” to buy more than I can afford in a climate where too many good series don’t rely upon greed to be sold.  The days where Marvel was an industry leader are long gone and in its place is a company who cares nothing for its readership only the almighty dollar.  Had this been done in Weapon X where it all started through it’s past four issues i’d be singing its praises but now it’s damnation through unnecessary greed is all I can see.

The Chair #1 (of 4)
Alterna Comics 2017
Written, Inked & Lettered by Peter Simeti
Penciled by Kevin Christensen

Richard Sullivan has spent ten years on death row for a crime he claims he never committed.  But lately inmates are being brutally murdered by the Warden and his guards. Will Sullivan escape before it's too late?

One of the things about this that piques my interest is that in this day and age a facility like this wouldn’t, or shouldn’t exist.  Make no mistake I believe that there are people who work in the system, particularly on death row, who enjoy that for the power they think it wields them.  However the kind of atrocities that Richard experiences well those are the kind that only happen in stories, after all peeing and defecating into inmates food, the guards being given carte blanche to kill inmates yeah that’s something that cannot happen in today’s society.   There are way too many safeguards and watch dogs out there even if this were a privately owned prison.

That having been said this is a story and one that is meant to show us the depth of human depravity and make us ask ourselves who are the real monsters out there?  I like the way that Peter approaches this story as well.  It’s interesting because I see it this as something that couldn't’ possibly happen and yet the idea behind it thrills me.  His depiction of a man who didn’t commit his crime hardened by his time and experiences in this place has fundamentally changed him.  It’s the changed man we meet, yes he still has traces of the person he used to be but it’s the man he is now that’s the focus.

The characterisation and story development here are extremely well done.  I think the decision to make this a black and white story works in its favour as well.  It lends that not really Noir feel but this old timey kind of horror genre feel to it where it’s more about the story and less about the atrocities.  The impact it has on the reader is strong and in it’s own way has that tone and feel that the Walking Dead did when it debuted.

The use of page layouts through the angles and perspective are extremely well done.  The use of shadows and stark darkness that wipes away backgrounds really makes you feel alone with Richard.  Even when there are other characters present you still don’t feel connected and that creates this wonderful atmosphere.

I kind of like the fact that Richard’s past is touched upon but really left alone.  Dwelling will get him nowhere and his current predicament is more dire than facing the electric chair itself.  Just the way the story is structured is nice to see as if flows through the pages introducing readers to his current way of life.  We get a good sense of  his daily routine and how and what he has to do to retain his sanity in a place where true monsters dwell.

Also the way that absolute power corrupts absolutely is something we don’t see that much of anymore and how we’re seeing it incorporated into the book is in my opinion one of its greatest attributes.  That and proving again that not all monsters are the ones that locked away for what they’ve done some are that way by choice.

Shirtless Bear-Fighter #1
Image Comics 2017

After being betrayed by the bears that raised him, the legendary Shirtless Bear-Fighter wanders the forest he’s sworn to protect, fistfighting bears, eating flapjacks, and being the angriest man the world has ever known! When wild-eyed, super-strong bears attack the citizens of Major City, Shirtless ventures into the human world to do what he does best...PUNCH THOSE BEARS IN THE FACE! But all is not as it seems. Someone is manipulating Shirtless...and only by confronting the demons of his past can Shirtless hope to save his future! A heart-filled, hilarious, tall tale for the ages…

I have to say after the promo came out and we saw Shirtless pixelated I was way more curious to see if that would be the case when the book came out.  I mean let’s face it if it were a woman she wouldn’t have been pixelated in the series but a seemingly well endowed man of course that is pixelated and i’m actually rather sad by that.  More so since those people who see it in this issue make those faces and react the way they do to it.  I mean c’mon it’s 2017 there’s no real reason it should’ve been pixelated like it was.

Now onto the story.  I think it’s a hoot pure and simple.  There’s a great premise, idea and execution to it that is engaging and leaves the reader wondering what the heck is going on here.  Like why Shirtless is being recruited by these folks and what kind of past he has with them?  The clues are here but the reality isn’t and we are left with a lot questions we’d like answered which by the way is a great way to get us to come back guaranteed.

I like that this has that absurdity to it which makes it fun and unexpected and then balances that out with the seriousness infused with it.  This really does have that near perfect balance between the two ideals that makes it work.  It’s a precarious thing to have and to have it done this well is something extraordinary.  The way we see the story unfold here is great and when an agent starts to question her superior and the internet cats come out to quiet her down you almost literally laugh out loud.  This of course is in contrast to Shirtless and how adamant he takes things.

Now we covered the lack of real nudity but the rest of the interiors are very good.  It’s got a great easy breezy feel to it that is easy on the eyes and evokes things from the senses.  The utilisation of the page layouts through their angles and perspective are handled extremely well.  Even backgrounds or lack thereof are used nicely throughout the issue.  Also the bear in the city that is wreaking havoc well that’s got that blend of absurd and realistic to it as well.  All of it really does come off beautifully.

I’m not usually one for the silly but this this one is a great change of pace for me.  It’s delightful in every way possible.

Heartthrob Season 2 #1

There must be 50 ways to leave your lover, but none of them include robbing a Fleetwood Mac concert and escaping to Canada with a getaway driver and a group of anarchists. Putting Mercer and her life of crime in the rearview, Callie tries her damnedest to live a normal life, hideout from the FBI and make sense of Canadian currency. As her friends continue pulling crimes and Callie dips her toe back in the dating waters, she’ll find out when you share your heart with someone, breaking up is way harder to do.

Well now I was wondering if we’d seen the last of Callie and Scout after the first arc.  I’m glad that wasn’t the case because here we are in the thick of the seventies with feathered hair and funky fashions and all kinds of criminal mayhem.   I have to admit part of me loves that Callie finally got rid of her excuse, I mean boyfriend aka heart donor, and is living her life the way she should.  Well as she wants to at least.

The characterisation here is already exactly what I was kind of hoping for.  I mean c’mon Callie and Scout went to Canada and Callie went straight, kinda.  So this issue we see what the ladies have been up to since getting into Canada and it’s pretty much what we’d expect.  Callie turned to a life of crime because of the heart transplant and her imaginary criminal lover donor but Scout was a driver long before they met.  So seeing what the women were up to isn’t that much of a surprise.

I’m a fan of the artwork here.  Why because it’s just fun and the creativity and imagination are splendid, we see a lot Canadian Maple Leaf hockey jerseys.  The hairstyles and clothes are magnificent to see.  The use of page layouts through angles and perspective are handled extremely well.  Even backgrounds are used in great ways, not to mention seeing the wallpaper pattern, would I like to see the in every panel yes but sometimes that’s not realistic unfortunately.

However seeing Callie be conflicted about her life and not knowing which life she wants to lead that is delightful.  Why because as a reader and fan I know where I want to see it go but does that line up with what Christopher has in store?  Find out for yourself what he has in store for her in season two and thrill once again to seeing Callie and Scout try to figure out what it is they do best!

This is the future of storytelling, individual arcs that make up seasons like we find with shows on Netflix or through the BBC.   Short, sweet and succinct and told completely until the next one’s ready leaving us that nice feeling of anticipation between them.

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1
Marvel Comics 2017

Well let’s be honest, does the world need another Spider-Man book?  No not really but it’s here and it’s being done by some of today’s hottest talent so naturally it’s worth a look see.  There’s a new movie out this year, a new cartoon and hopefully a new resurgence of interest in the character so why wouldn’t Marvel want to cash in?  First and foremost this is a business right and you have to strike while the iron is hot or it’s going to get hot.

The opening here was kind of fun once you get past the repeat of the origin.  Because why on Earth Peter’s telling Johnny his origin story is beyond him, and us.  Still it’s nice to see he and Johnny having that friendship still where they go the movies and hang out like normal people.  Also after making plans for going to the movies Peter talks to Aunt May, now when did she become so invested in his love life and using references like Tindor and the like?  I mean sure it’s different and funny not to mention completely unexpected.

Alright so Chip is bringing his unique vision to this series.  He’s trying to bring humour to this in ways that is sorely missing in comics these days.  You see this in a number of ways, from his web shooter malfunctioning to the appearance of Ant-Man and a girl unexpectedly asking him out on a date.  Also that Peter is a scientist seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle and it’s being downplayed and kind of dismissed.  So when did he lose his job?  Did he get de-aged again to be more relevant?  Don’t get me wrong the introduction of a new character we’ve never seen or met before who has close ties to Spidey is an amazing thing to see happen.  It’s new fresh and keeps his past close to the forefront.

Adam’s interiors are really very strong.  His page layouts are utilised extremely well through the use of angles, perspective and even backgrounds or lack thereof.  The attention to detail in the work is spectacular and I love that we’re seeing what appears to be several different styles in one setting.  From Sam to Mason it’s like seeing a wider range than we’re used to.  Also let’s face it Adam knows how to create a great comic book style and utilise that to it’s fullest.

We’ll see where this is going, I mean Peter’s flaky, forgetful and tends to leave people in the lurch, see Johnny and the movie date.  I’m not sure when he got to be the absent minded type but life does tend to get in the way at times, more so when you are a superhero.  Also forgetting to call someone and taking off for another city when did that become the norm and acceptable?    I like the two part ending here, the one with Peter and the one with Johnny.  So i’m wondering if Peter’s going to meet the newest version of Iron Man, the girl, while Johnny meets well you have to see that to believe it.  But I will say this if there’s another Peter clone i’m done point blank period.  I don’t care one way or the other if it’s different from ALL THE REST.  there are too many clones of Peter to begin with.  There’s also a startling lack of respect for himself and for what he’s capable of.  It’s almost a caricature of who he is and is seen as.

It’s a first issue by some amazing creators but I can’t figure out if I even like it or not.

Crosswind #1
Image Comics 2017
Written by Gail Simone
Illustrated by Cat Staggs

Well I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one.  All I knew was that it was Gail and Cat and that was enough for me to know I was in.  I’ve kind of given up reading Previews because I like not knowing ahead of time what’s going to happen in the books I read.  As much as a great tool for ordering it is it does spoil a bit too much for me.  So this turned into such a treat for me because it was different, engaging and visually stunning.

I’m talk about Cat first because let’s face it that’s really the first thing we notice when we open up a book.  The interior artwork here was nothing like I could have been expecting.  It’s so gosh darn good that I was seriously just staring not even reading for a bit.  While it did leave me with a few comparisons in my head, kind of between Greg Land and Alex Ross, the way she was able to bring these characters to life and then in the snowy landscape instantly I was in love with this book.  The utilisation of page layouts through their angles, perspective and use of backgrounds was so on point.

Not to be outdone Gail’s characterisation here was fascinating, uncomfortable and everything in-between.  Seriously I loved the opening because it set the tone for the entire issue.  We open with the introduction to Carson who is a hitman and he’s on a job and the dialogue, mood and tone of the conversation will make you sit up and take notice.  Gail does a superb job in bringing us into his life, his lifestyle and to the people that are currently in his life and have some importance.

Then we are introduced to Juniper who’s a stepmom and apparently a MILF.  so uch of one that part of her introduction made me as uncomfortable as all get out, why because A. I would never speak to a woman that way and B. not being a woman I have no idea if that even truly happens.  That Gail wrote that to demonstrate how she’s spoken to and how those experiences, alongside her interactions with her husband and stepson, have broken her down to such a point in her life is amazing.

So what significance do these two vastly different characters have to one another?  Well it’s surprisingly simple, but you’ll have to read the book to really see.  What I like about what I just read is in the descriptions of their lives we see the possibilities of what could happen now that this issue ended in the manner it did.

Honestly I cannot wait to see where Gail’s going to take this as one gets to explore her inner book lover, living the lives of characters in novels that she has read is a dream for her and now it could be more.  She could have her chance to realize a life that doesn’t make her cower in the corner or make her feel like she’s worthless.  The chance to explore someone like that and change how she sees herself and how we see her well that’s got to be a writer’s dream come true.

This is an unexpected type of reading experience.  Beautifully written and illustrated it expertly explores two vastly different people.  This is a home run book from these ladies, and gentleman.

Swordquest #1

Swordquest #1
Atari/Dynamite Entertainment 2017
Written by Chad Bowers & Chris Sims
Illustrated by Ghostwriter X
Colour Flats by Karl Fan

In 1984, Peter Case was on his way to being crowned champion of SwordQuest, set to win the last of four contests and lay claim to a golden sword worth over $50,000! But when the game was discontinued, Peter found himself without a game to finish. Now, over thirty years later, Peter's stuck in a different kind of game entirely -- the game of life, and he's losing fast. But when he learns that all the prizes meant for the SwordQuest contest of his youth are on display in the World Arcade Museum, he finds an unknown determination that sees him put together a team of like-minded losers for the ultimate heist job -- a real-life sword quest!

Alright so I may have grown up in the Atari age myself but I never knew of Swordquest.  That the boys have actually gone and done either their research or revived their love for a game franchise that was never finished and have been able to incorporate that into a work of fiction is pretty genius.   I mean I love that we’ve got Peter, who last issue was diagnosed with a terminal disease then watched his apartment building burn to the ground forcing him to move back in with his mother.  This of course led him to re-discover Swordquest.  It’s a series of events that if looked at seem random and unconnected but I don’t think that’s the case.  More so after the way this issue ends.

Also can I say kudos to the boys here for bringing the past to life and helping shape Peter’s future.   It was the 80’s and being gay was not something you wanted known, though to be honest ask anyone I kind of owned it.  So that Peter tried making a move on Alvin whom he’d grown up with and had that love of video games, movies and such with and then got massively rejected in a way that stung.  Yeah it’s some very powerful writing and something that is very first hand experience if I may say so.

The characterisation for this book is really outstanding.  From seeing Amy, then leaving her, being honest about his idea with her and yes Alvin whom she brought with her, it all just has this pacing and development that stands out.  It transcends what this should have or could have been and made something else entirely.  Throw in the mysterious Player Two who enters the game and well intrigue is too weak a word to describe how it feels to want to know what’s in store next.

The interior artwork here is so solid.  I love the style that Ghostwriter X brings to the table. From the look, feel and tone of the museum, from the outside in, to the way he brings the characters to life here it’s all so extremely well done.  There’s a presence, a realism and even a throwback to what we see that makes this seem so damn special.  While that manbun is something i’ll never accept as fashionable regardless if it’s on a naked man the rest really is stunning.  The utilisation of the page layouts, how angles, perspective and backgrounds are used all of it is that perfect blend of the past with the present.

Who knew Atari could come back in way that takes real life history and infuses it with fiction in a way to make it new, fresh and interesting again?  Oh yeah and thankfully without having to reference Atari Force!

Well the science fiction-action-romance comes to it’s not quite Earth shattering conclusion this issue.  I’m a fan of the fact that this story focuses on smarts, both book and street, to really tell the story.  We don’t need another hero, we don’t need to know the way home, we want to see characters that we can not only relate to on a personal level but at the same time will inspire us as well.

I’m gonna get my small complaint out of the way early here.  How many times do we need to be reminded that Nat’s a trans character?  I mean I don’t know anyone who goes around saying “This gay boy, or this Lesbian, this hetero, is going to…”  so why the need to keep Nat referring to herself using Trans as a descriptive word while beating us over the head with the reminder of part of what she is?  Being Trans shouldn’t consume who she is so why make that such a huge issue?  Once it was established that should have been enough in my opinion, it really kind of makes me question why her use of this is different than someone else’s?

Sumesh and Nat not only make one of the cutest couples around but I love that their inherent differences also bond them.  From Sumesh being the brainy one and Nat being more adventurous and daring they seem to balance each other out splendidly.  Throw in Wayne and well it’s like this little geek gang that you kind of want to see more from.  That they are up against a woman who is very stereotypical crazy this time around well that’s just icing in the cake.  What they could do together as a group is mind boggling.

I like Eryk’s interior artwork here.  The linework is smooth, strong and full of attention to detail.  The use of page layouts through the utilisation of angles, perspective and backgrounds delight me with how much the flesh out not just the story but the bigger picture.  Also he really manages to capture the transitioning of Nat extremely well and that’s not easy to do.  The faces, facial expressions and body language do as much for the characterisation as the words.

While okay so Zero’s a bit of a megalomaniac who believes only she can save the world blah blah blah the characterisation is actually very good.  We get a good solid clear picture of each person through their dialogue and that’s nice to see.  Also that this doesn’t quite go the way I think any of us thought it would was great to see.  That parts are left unanswered doesn’t bother me it just means there’s something they can visit at a later date should they so desire.

The ending was one of those break out the kleenex moments for me and after everything we saw I think we needed that!  It’s a great story, with one heck of a solid premise and it’s execution while not flawless has been wonderful to see.  This has been a fun well crafted story and we need more like it.

Black Hood Season 2 #5
Dark Circle Comics 2017
Written by Duane Swierczynski
Illustrated by Greg Scott
Coloured by Kelly Fitzpatrick
Lettered by Rachel Deering

Greg Hettinger, the current Black Hood, and Kip Burland, the original Black Hood, have
come together to take down the assassin The Nobody once and for all. But at what cost?
For years, Kip Burland was hot on the heels of The Nobody, until the trail led him to Philadelphia—where he was shot in the head by Hettinger, then a patrol cop on duty. Burland
survived thanks to his bullet-proof hood, but his friends in law enforcement put word out
that he had succumbed to his injuries for his own personal protection. Once Greg took up
the mantle as the new Black Hood, he landed on the unhinged Nobody’s radar.
Burland and Hettinger are now forced to join forces to take out The Nobody. Unfortunately, the ruthless killer has kidnapped Jessie Dupree, Greg’s only remaining friend. Time is ticking for both masked vigilantes. Can they save Jessie and themselves before it’s too late?

Well I will say this much this series continues to blow my mind.  Duane brought back Kip and I thought okay so what’s going to happen now?  I mean is Kip the kind of hero to have used Greg to distract Nobody while he recuperated and found his strength to fight back?  Would he leave him to the wolves that has become his life after fighting so hard to beat the drugs and get clean?  I didn’t know and that thrilled me.  I mean c’mon you’ve got the original and the pretender and we’ve gotten to the know the latter in ways that well make him mean more to us than the original ever could.  For now.

The level of writing, story development, pacing and characterisation from Duane in this series has been nothing short of absolutely astonishing.  It’s been one thrill ride after another as we see Greg wrestle with his demons that have touched us as readers in ways that almost make him one our dearest friends or relatives.  Yes it’s that realistic to see what he’s going through that he feels like that person in our lives who we know, love and support for having to go through it themselves.   I don’t recall the last time a writer got his readers to connect with a character on every single level possible.

Then there’s Greg whose work on the interiors here keeps showing the world what an underrated and underused artist he is.  The attention to detail is beyond measure, the mood, tone and feel of this gritty dark crime noir style that he brings to life is mesmerising.  The way the work flows through the page layouts utilising angles, perspective and backgrounds make this seem like it moves faster than it does and gives us a more complete picture of what’s happening all around them.  The linework is clean, strong and establishes emotions and feelings through facial expressions and body language like it’s been mastered by the best.

I love that these seasons of the Black Hood keep coming and I’m hoping that they don’t end.  Whether we’ll get Kip or Greg it doesn’t matter to me so long as Duane and Greg are the ones to bring their adventure to life.  Plus the cliffhanger style ending here yeah we know this isn’t over so it’s like sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next installment and that’s when you know the series is an elite among the elite.

Betty & Veronica #3

Betty & Veronica #3
Archie Comics 2016
Written & Illustrated by Adam Hughes
Coloured by Jose Villarrubia
Lettered by Jack Morelli

Betty and Veronica have waged war on one another! In one corner, it’s Betty Cooper fighting for everything her hometown stands for: local artisans, community charities and hard, honest work. In the other corner is Veronica Lodge, rallying for high-end corporate chain takeovers and the hipster agenda. With the entire town split in two, which BFF will prevail? It all comes down to a Halloween dance…

Here’s the deal for me, this was started in 2016 it’s a three issue run apparently that should’ve been completed before the first issue went to print.  I was hoping that this was going to be an ongoing monthly but let’s face it at this rate it would never last.  Which is a shame because it’s a great book, it’s well written, interesting and well Adam’s art is simply divine.  This book for me embodies what the reimagining was supposed to look like and it’s just a shame that the schedule for getting it to fans is unrealistic.

I have to admit that the story here took me by complete and utter surprise.  From the get go seeing Betty and Veronica go at each other with such a ferocity and vehemence well it fueled something within me.   This wasn’t the book I remembered or was used to and that alone made it worth it’s weight in gold.  It also gave us a chance to see Adam really delve into the characters and show some strong and amazing characterisation.  The drive, determination and ingenuity both girls possess was spotlighted extremely well.  And yes we’ll all grudgingly admit we’ve got our favourite seeing them compete for something other than Archie brought another dimension to them that we needed to see.

I don’t think I have to talk about Adam’s artwork really.  He is well known for the work he does visually and that this is up there with some of the absolute best work he’s ever managed to put to paper shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.  The attention to detail, the way the characters come to life and yet have that instant recognition is superbly done.  The flow of the book, the little details he throws in, that coffee maker for instance, all conspire to really set this apart from just about anything and everything on stands today.

Using Hotdog the way he did and how the story has been structured well for me, had this come out on a timely schedule, would be a crowning achievement in his cap.  I mean there’s so much expected and unexpected happening here that takes the reader on a journey through the lives, minds and loves of the Riverdale high school students that it feels like it could have been something we saw on 90210.  Only here it was better, more interesting and far more fun to watch unfold.

So does wholesome overcome shadiness?  Well you’ll have to read the story to find out but just don’t expect anything to happen because what Adam has in store well that’s the real treat.
