Spencer & Locke #3
Action Lab Danger Zone 2017

Let me assure of one thing right here and right now you are not prepared for what is going to happen within these pages.  If you haven’t read this and are on the fence I will say this is the penultimate issue that will redefine what you think about small press comics.  It’s powerful, gripping and takes you to a place that you may never recover from.  All of which is wrapped up in both drug induced hallucinations mixed with real world terrifying memories of the past.

I’ve been a fan of this series and how it’s made me feel since the first issue.  And yes it does have that mix of Calvin & Hobbes with Sin City but it goes so much further than that as well.  David might have taken his inspiration from those classics but he has managed to infuse his own sensibility and brand of humour into this in ways that stand out profoundly.  I know that Spencer is his stuffed animal that thanks to his upbringing never leaves his side and that his actions aren’t real but the love, fear and care that he emotes throughout the story is remarkable.

This issue is spectacular for a number of reasons.  I will not go into the specifics because in all honesty that would ruin the reading experience for you.  Instead I highly urge you to find this, order it if you have to and read it and revel in what David, Jorge and Jasen bring to us.   There’s a mad scientist type who has been employed by the man wanting to take Locke out of the picture.  His particular skill set would be worthy of reading a mini-series of it’s own as I found it that intriguing.  So that he and Locke have to do what they do this issue well yeah it comes down to a few things that you never know a man can possess until that situation arises and you have no other choice.  Or just some morbid curiosity to see what’ll happen.

Jorge and Jasen’s work on the interiors here is truly outrageous.  The fact that the past is seen in that comic strip style and then left to his own devices Locke’s imagination takes us on another style and then to see the nitty gritty they bring to the current it all flows smooth as silk.  The way page layouts are used to showcase the utilisation of angles, perspective and even backgrounds spotlighting some incredible imagination and creativity make this a MUST READ book.

The way this book has been structured so that there are reveals and revelations that take us on this unexpected journey through the life and mind of Locke.  There’s no amount of preparation one can do or undertake so that this kind of experience doesn’t shake you to your core.  I mean I think this single solitary issue has managed to tell about a man than some entire runs could ever accomplish.  It was all done without rushing, skipping over or glossing past the parts that are hard to cope with.

This is a frontrunner for limited-series of the year right now for it’s sheer audacity and level/quality of storytelling from every aspect.

Has there ever been a story where you are actually rooting for the psychotic killer as he searches for his sex doll?  Edwyn is an utterly fantastic character and it’s true none of this would be happening if that boy had minded his own business.  But no his father is well connected, bought and paid for the local sheriff's office and thinks there’s nothing he’s not able to or entitled to do.  Except he took Virginia the only thing that’s kept Edwyn’s violent urges at bay for the past ten years.

I think the opening of this issue was one of those that will remain with me forever.  Granted when you are bought and paid for you do have that feeling that you are entitled to use your position to do whatever you damn well please.   So poor Gwen being in the wrong place at the wrong time was going to be cruelly raped by Thomas.  Oh i’m not saying he didn’t deserve exactly what he got because he pretty much did but it’s also one of the most visually stunning non-gore violent scenes that will leave a massive impression.

So this issue introduces Gwen and well we don’t know her story but what we do see of her is rather remarkable.  Though if/when the adrenaline wear off and she comes down to Earth we’ll see if anything changes.  In the meantime I love the characterisation and her choices that she’s making.  She’s hitchhiking her way around i’m guessing and as long as she’s in this neck of the wood she’s safer with Edwyn than without.  Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen but hey Edwyn gets my vote that’s for sure!

So i’m also a huge fan of the interior artwork done by Daniel and Laura.  I mentioned earlier the lack of gore and strong impression left earlier in the issue and the work throughout really does pretty much the same thing.  The use of page layouts and how angles, perspective and backgrounds are utilised is wonderfully done.  The linework is smooth and clean which gives us that classic comic book style.  It’s nicely done and works extremely well with the story at hand.

There’s this delicious method to the madness in this story.  In many ways it’s got the mood, tone and feel of DC’s the Joker or Harley Quinn only in this instance it’s more fully realised in terms of sheer crazy.  That Edwyn is the kind of man whose impulses can be tamed by Virginia his plastic sex doll has all the earmarks of this being as fascinating as it is.  I mean his love for Virginia while suppressing the desires he’s once had that he still possess the mindset to slip into old habits so completely is delicious.

I doff thy hat to those fine fellows who have managed to create this and execute it with such aplomb.

The Courier #3 (of 5)
Zenescope Entertainment 2017
Written by Ralph Tedesco
Illustrated by J.G. Miranda

Almost three decades after the virus hit, the world between sectors is overrun by raiders, outlaws and monstrous beings called “Primals.” Couriers are the key to trade as they navigate the extremely dangerous terrain between strongholds to deliver goods to the wealthy. And Eve Harper is maybe the best there is. But when Eve takes a job delivering a package to untrustworthy buyers, she soon realizes that this time she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

Each issue that comes out the more impressed I become.  What Ralph is doing with this is really kind of exciting.  Instead of just trying to inundate us with the world, how it got this way or the inherent science and such behind all that the he instead is giving us Eve, her life and how she gets along here.  Her job, as much as we see of it, is really just the catalyst for her adventure which is all the introduction to the current state of the world we’re getting.  It’s a smart way to tell the story and I like that the more she sees and the more she has to do the more we learn by proxy.

While i’d like to see a world where societal collapse didn’t see the uprising of so many independent warlords it really is the only logical thing.  Small provinces are going to pop up each one run by a local who will assert his control and authority through violence and threats.  That’s the only way to keep some semblance of order or so it would seem.  So naturally there would be much backstabbing, conniving and duplicitousness that not all would welcome.  The character development that we see here runs that gamut and I have to say it’s very well done.

I do like the interiors here, from the softer more muted version of Eve’s past to the present and beyond the linework here has a nice weight to it.  The attention to detail is so nice to see and the way that works to give us these facial expressions and body language to keep the characterisation happening in all aspects is a bonus.  The way page layouts are utilised through angles and perspective not to mention the use of backgrounds really does help tell the bigger picture and allows us to get more involved in the story.

This is the kind of stuff that is not only popular, post apocalyptic never goes out of style but it’s also very prevalent right now, but it’s also a great way to showcase some strong storytelling chops.  Inherently they are all based on the same premise so it’s the devil in the details that sets them apart from one another.  In this case Ralph has found a way to make his story unique and interesting.  This is also the kind of book and storytelling that keeps readers coming back, not the over sexualised and slutty dressed gimmicky ploy the company started off with.

The Courier sends the right kind of message that solid storytelling and high quality interior artwork will keep you at the forefront of the industry.

It’s a year into the zombie apocalypse, a worldwide tipping point when most of the surviving population dies and turns zombie.  All remaining forms of government collapse. The last vestiges of civilization are abandoned. Everyone is starving and nobody is safe.   Amidst the chaos, a small team of National Guard set out on a Hail Mary mission to find a cache of the food substitute Soylent Z, which may be the only hope to save the few people left.

As a fan of the show it’s nice to see Dynamite working with the SyFy network to make sure this prequel to the show lives up to their standards.  We’re three issues in and the series still maintains those twists, turns and surprises that are masterfully blended with humour that makes the show such a success.  Still waiting to see Citizen Z up in his Arctic lair though I mean as a member of the military he should’ve been around all this time as well.  Hopefully we’ll see his story in a limited series all his own after this one is done, who knows.

It’s been so long since the show addressed Soylent Z and in my mind I can’t help but think that stuff isn’t good, or it’s dangerous and has the kind of side effect reaction that creates more Z’s but for the life of me I just can’t remember.  So while the mission to find some is a good one or these two it’s really what we’re seeing around them that’s better.  I mean the ship the Soylent Z is on seems like it’s run by capitalist pigs who are running a twisted ship but now they are being hailed by The Steve.

The Steve makes me laugh a lot.  I’m not sure if we’re supposed to but it just does.  I love the idea behind it and the execution is flawless.  That he’s this supposed big shot who “never thinks unless absolutely necessary and yes has people who show originality in plundering other ships.  The whole interaction between the cruise ship and The Steve is brilliantly done and just when you think things are going one way the boys shake it all up.  This wholly epitomises what the show is about and how we see it.

The interior artwork is superbly done.  Granted I want more backgrounds--i’m that guy who thinks they do more to flesh out the story and bring more mood, tone and feel to the book.  They are kind of an essential part of storytelling for me.  The way that page layouts are used with how angles and perspective are utilised is wonderfully done.  While the clothes at times come off as costumey in this new reality it’s still fun to see individual style as bad as it is shine through.

I do like the storytelling here, from the premise to its execution this is the kind of stuff that’s entertaining with just a tinge of horror.  I’m not talking the Z’s either because it’s really the horrific things man is capable of doing when society collapses in such a way.

Fun, interesting and a great compliment to the television programme.

So to be perfectly honest I was rather content with what Ricardo was doing and presenting us with this weird and kind of exciting take on an old idea.  Okay yeah the dollhouse maker has some kind of weird thing going on with him with those flickering almost soul like things dancing around him as if he were eating them.  That was different and something that was to be explored and added a whole new element to the proceedings.  Now suddenly Ricardo amps this all up in ways that well will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Don’t get me wrong exploring their new reality with that guy thrown in for good measure well that was enough.  This is something else entirely.  Now the gang has gone and done things that we haven’t seen before as they find themselves in need of finding someone to trust.  After all being close to six inches high and surrounded by giants and the dangers the natural world poses well they need help.

The writing here is spectacular!  I am enjoying the direction this book is taking as the science fiction runs parallel to the horror and creates something worthy of the Twilight Zone in it’s heyday.  I love that there’s this great intelligence behind what we’re seeing as this seeming bizarre and random event has occurred.  The characterisation that we see continues to flesh out these characters in ways that make us like them, hate them or make us feel indifferent about them.

The interior artwork here remains impressive to me.  From the proportions and the prospective that’s needed to showcase the size differences here to the attention and level of detail in bringing the characters to life as real people is handled extremely well.  The way page layouts are used so that they utilise angles, perspective and backgrounds to help the story flow like it does is wonderful to see.  The mood, tone, feel and emotions they bring to the page is nice to see and helps understand the characterisation that much more.

That the story direction goes in ways that we do expect and simultaneously veers off into parts and directions unknown keeping us on our toes is a huge factor in my enjoyment here.  That the familiarity that i felt before is still reminiscent and yet gone in favour of something newer.  I love the fact that his is a prime example of how you can mine the past for ideas without thinking you have to copy and paste it for today’s audience.  Where the similarities end and originality begins is where the excitement occurs.

Vault has literally burst upon the scene here with these titles, stories and creators that are basically unknowns who have the talent, skill and love of the medium to really craft, create and tell these immensely interesting tales.

Rapture #2
Valiant Entertainment 2017
Written by Matt Kindt
Illustrated by Cafu with Roberto De La Torre

Welcome to the Deadside, one of many nether realms and outer dimensions,. Its diverse inhabitants includes souls of the departed, visitors from other realms, and even the living. Among the living is Tama -- Geomancer and protector of the Earth, keeper of the Book of the Geomancer. Upon transcribing an ancient text from a demon deep within the Deadside, Tama learned of an age-old prophecy coming to light that would spell the destruction of life on Earth. In order to stop this threat, Tama returns to the land of the living to enlist Ninjak, Punk Mambo, and the Magpie. However, when they venture back to the Deadside, they find that the potential apocalypse has already begun, led by a mysterious figure -- Babel.

Honestly i’m not really sure what Rapture is when combined with the Tower of Babel, being a nice Jewish boy i’m not too up to date on the Christianity thing.  I do know that separately they are not good things at all so together it must be so much worse.  Though i’m not really all the much into the worse part because of what Matt’s doing with the now part.  Okay so Tama is in all this and it’s nice to finally see a Geomancer being proactive and being all they can be for a change, and yes it’s got Shadowman who needs to get his priorities straight again.  However for me it’s really Ninjak and Black Mambo, and why Mambo cause now I can just sing Mambo #5.

Throw into that mix Rex the Razer and his back story and well suddenly this is just the kind of stuff that makes the bible interesting.  Forget if it’s factual or not because for me it’s more about who you are, who you can be and who you are meant to be.  So the colourful characters that we see come to life well they literally are the stuff legends are made from.  The way that Matt uses the old, new and the yet to be well it makes for thrilling reading.

Gosh Valiant has not only been slaying it in the writing department but the artwork across the board has been off the charts.  Cafu, De La Torre and Dalhouse bring their A game here.  The linework is amazingly clean, strong and the attention to detail makes most else pale in comparison.  The muted colours of the Deadside versus Punk’s pink familiar well yeah that alongside everything else makes this strong and powerful work.  Plus the use of page layouts utilising angles, perspective and backgrounds are simply splendid.

While we get some action this issue I like the way Matt uses the story itself and the characters characterisation to get us into the issue and keep us interested.  I am a huge fan and supporter of books that you actually have to read to follow what’s going on and let’s face it Matt’s among the premiere writer’s in the industry today that does it to this degree.  While we can hazard a guess as to what’s at stake here the reality of it is so much more extreme, see worse.  That these five heroes are brought together to end the threat that starts in the Deadside and will bleed over into our reality have a truly thankless job.  Though it’s one we will never stop wanting to see.

In between mentoring his younger self, reconnecting with parents and saving a young mutant from a purifier attack, Bobby is still trying to find his place in the world.  Luckily, he has his duties at the newly opened Xavier Institute to provide Clarity….

So it’s a tough time to be an X-Man but then again when it isn’t?  We’ve seen Bobby’s history of underachiever, jokester, womanizer and all around joke through the years.  Then along comes a time-displaced younger version of Bobby who kind of explains why he’s been that way his entire life, he’s been fighting who he really is.  So with young Bobby being more secure and open about himself he lands a boyfriend while older more established Bobby is only starting to come to grips with the truth about himself.  Sina is taking on a monumental task here with this character.

Emma threw it in his face that she could do more with his power than he could.  This started a journey of exploring his powers more fully.  Now he has to come out to himself while figuring out who he is just as he had to learn to discover the extent of his powers.  Interestingly enough both cases stem from outside sources.  So it’s no wonder that Bobby isn’t attending Pride Parades or seeking out boyfriends he’s still trying to reconcile things within himself.  That Sina is bringing this delicate balance to use through a smart, intelligent manner that doesn’t rush and allows him to explore all aspects instead of just one is why this series is off to it’s monumental start.

I like the interior artwork here.  The attention to detail is nice to see the linework is strong, clean and can be quite powerful.  The creativity in seeing the uses of his power is brought to life nicely.  The utilisation of page layout through angles, perspective and backgrounds make the story flow nicely and keep us engaged in the story in ways that are unexpected.

The dialogue and the interaction between Bobby and Kitty is nicely done as are the solo moments we see of him just going about his business.  That we see the telltale signs of his own discomfort and unease at being who he is serves as that perfect reminder of him trying too hard, once again in his life, to be who others see him as.  We’ve never seen this kind of conflicted, honest and forthright portrayal of a gay superhero before.  I mean this is the penultimate story of self-discovery.

Set in the backdrop of the Xavier Institute surrounded by past lovers, girlfriends and students he has to find a way to be himself and forge his own unique path in the world while fighting crime, megalomaniac dictators and trying to rescue kids whose own abilities are just now emerging.

Sina is the logical and best choice for such a stark, honest and compelling series.  Now here’s hoping that Marvel allows it to grow, evolve and become all it can be like any of us would ever wish to be ourselves.

Victor LaValle’s Destroyer #2 (of 6)

Written by Victor LaValle

On a dreary November night in 1792, Victor Frankenstein used Natural—and Unnatural—Science to reanimate the dead.  Victor eventually died, but the Monster never did.  It hid away in Antarctica and thought itself free of humanity.  But the world isn’t done with the Monster, and one descendant of the Frankenstein bloodline yet lives…

So it’s the second issue and I’m honestly more surprised with how original and interesting this book is.  To take something so iconic as the story of Frankenstein and to use it then warp it and expand upon in the ways that Victor is doing here is rather remarkable.  The premise behind what we’re seeing here is great and it’s execution is so far incredibly stunning.

Victor also manages to infuse a few things we are seeing in today’s culture that are touchy subjects and yet he refrains from making them preachy or judgmental and instead focuses on the characters and what is driving them not the outside forces.  It works for me because while Dr. Baker’s son, a black youth, was shot by police her actions moving forward from that are Frankenstein related.  It really doesn’t preach it’s all about reaction to what happens in her life and that’s something easier for us to understand.

Love Dietrich’s interior artwork.  From his ability to see ahead with technology and his use of the patchwork rendition of Frankenstein’s monster are very much contemporary and yet throwback.  The utilisation of page layouts through their angles, perspective and use of backgrounds really make the book pop.  I love the stylisation of the work from the monster being scarier and yet not foreign and the fact that we can see the difference and more so in the last page well it’s extremely nice to see.

Dr. Baker’s cold analytical mind and her mixed desire to resurrect her son while using the technology that is so far ahead of it’s time make her a unique individual.  She’s fascinating and intriguing and the base of what’s presented is great and the potential for development even greater.  Then put opposite her the monster her ancestor created and his quest to end mankind while somehow knowing and sensing the boy’s existence well there are parallels and there are differences that both unite and create tension that you cannot wait to see unfold further.

I find myself admiring the fact that this is equal parts horror story and futuristic science fiction adventure.  The two are not exclusive from one another and that they can marry with such ease is a trait.  That Victor manages to bring us this kind of take on something so iconic and make feel new, fresh and original is the kind of stuff that makes reading as much fun as it can be.  To rediscover something you forgot about or lost and to be reminded that the world is only as limited as our minds imagination is the best thing to have happen.

Bubblegun Vol.2 #2
Aspen Comics 2017
Written by Mark Roslan
Illustrated by Angel Tovar
Coloured by Federico Blee

The BubbleGun team discovered that working off their debt to the gangster, Sir Penny, was not a singular act. After stealing data from a DNA secured server, the crew quickly realized they had bitten off more than they could chew, as Sir Penny revealed his plot to mass produce a new street drug, Nectar, using the information they provided. Now, with the threat of Sir Penny ending their lives held over their heads, their plan to break into Armorcorp to utilize their security bots is their only hope—unfortunately, a rather large security deterrent blocks the way…

I’m a fan of this book because it feels like it’s an amalgamation of things that I already like.  While it reeks of Japanese Anime franchises, and with the name I still can’t get past Bubblegum Crisis, with a Mission Impossible feel that uses a much more Mod Squad approach to the characters in terms of dialogue and relatability.  Yes I could probably throw in more like, such as or related to’s into my description because I love what the work Mark is doing here makes me feel.  He’s touching me in places that are generally reserved for nostalgia not for something brand new and I gotta say i’m digging every moment of it!

I’m pretty impressed as well with the story development here.  I mean the crew finds themselves in the unenviable position of being forced to work for a man of ill-repute and during this job for while we get to regale ourselves in their skill sets it would seem they go from frying pan to fire.  That Mark isn’t just satisfied to work one angle at a time he has to throw something and someone else into the mix to complicate matters further.  Soon it won’t be a matter of whom they have to work to for it’ll be will they be alive to work for themselves?

Angel and Federico do some great work on the interiors here.  I’m kind of obsessed with how the gun shoots goop that reminds us of bubble gum.  The way that the technology is represented, that cobra for instance, is superb.  The way page layouts are utilised through their angles and perspective are extremely well done.  There’s a balance between using backgrounds and leaving them open that i’m more a fan than I would usually admit.  And the way the colours surround some of the narration is great to see.

I like this because it’s not only good old fashioned escapism but it’s also very much because it’s this whole new and original kind of familiar work that resonates.  It’s got some great characterisation and the dialogue that readers can easily relate to.  I mean personal business in the middle of a mission and the way it kind of helps them focus well it makes sense and helps us to see the characters more like people.

I love that Aspen is like the little engine that could and keeps putting out these great little titles that remind us why comics have such a diverse database.

The Normals #2
Aftershock Comics 2017

After a death-defying fall, Jack presses Doctor Gordon on the true nature of his existence. But after WESTIN INCORPORATED seizes back what they identify as their property, Jack and his family prepare for the fight of their lives to maintain their freedom and preserve their humanity.

Well I really liked the direction that Adam took this last issue.  So I was looking forward to seeing where he could go next.  After all there was a lot of information thrown at us and I was more than a little curious where he was going to take it from there.  I mean there’s a lot of time still left in this so leave it to Adam to bring us to the brink, leave us hanging and then swerve us in a direction that we should’ve seen coming.

So what is life?  What does being alive mean and how do you know when you’ve crossed the line from a creation for property to creation of life?  That’s something that Adam is taking a look at here.  It isn’t something scientists tend to ask themselves because usually we’re saying just because you could doesn’t mean you should.  Then there’s the whole thing about how are they such life like model decoys for human beings?  Where did the programming and the know how to create such sophisticated androids.   Not just androids either but androids who have no idea they were anything other than a normal American family!

I like that this falls into the realm of what we see in Rough Riders but diverges so vastly at the same time.  Adam’s creativity and imagination work so well with his ability to tell a story in ways that engage the reader so thoroughly.  I think the fact that what we see can be seen as expected or almost predictable and yet simultaneously it has those moments to it that sest it apart from what you may know.

Denis is such a great artist and illustrator.  The way he can mix, blend and create the hybridization of man and machine is very well done.  Yes part of it seems very Six Million Dollar Man while others come across original and new.  That he can bring us the emotions Jack feels as he’s talking to the Doctor through facial expressions and body language is delightful to see.  The use of page layouts utilising angles and perspective do nice things to tell the story.  There’s very little use of backgrounds but the unique style of the art makes up for that.

I’m more intrigued by this issue than I was the first one and that is a sign of excellent writing.  Aftershock scored a major coup in letting Adam unleash his mind and creative process with these books.  It’s nice to once again look forward to books to come out and have the excitement I used to feel in my youth.
