Cave Carson Has An Interstellar Eye #3

It’s hard enough being stranded on a planet in the middle of an ages-long psychic laser war without being told you’re the prophesied saviour of one of the factions. Cave Carson’s never been interested in moral philosophy, after all, and there is a black, gooey substance he’s found that’s much more engaging...

The first run of this new franchise took the world by storm with it’s creativity and imagination not to mention it’s very offbeat and unique interior artwork. Now Jon and Michael continue the tradition and I have to admit it still very much lights up my imagination and brings a smile to my face when I think about it. Very few books any more have the kind of staying power this franchise does and it comes from all around, DC let’s it run it’s course and gives it okay advertising (could be better) and fans well they stick by it ensuring it isn’t going anywhere. This is the perfect storm and like the Red dot on Jupiter it’s sticking around for a while.

Jon does an absolute amazing job with the writing here. The way the book is structured so the flow is as solid as it is wonky just adds to the growing mystique the book has. Not only is this kind of wacky but it’s a wacky that actually works because it’s so strange and out there that it becomes too interesting to pass up. Some folks try to push but only go so far here Ron has this miraculous ability to push things to just the right spot and not go overboard taking it to the extreme. It really is a fine line and that not only can he find it but to land on it and just inch it a bit is amazing to see.

This father and daughter adventuring duo started off on rocky ground and while they may not be the most lovingly affectionate folks and they argue, which is natural for a father and daughter to do, but they’ve got each other’s back when it comes down to it. Okay I am not ashamed to admit I miss Wild Dog and wish he’d been brought back for season two because that was one hell of addition to the team and he has that certain joie de vive behind the gruff exterior that is still sorely missed. Heck he could’ve easily been an extended family member on the team and no one would’ve complained one lick.

Gail Simone asked a question recently about artists whose work that you didn’t like but grew to appreciate. It wasn’t until I was reading this issue that it hit me and Michael, along with the sorely missed Darwyn Cooke, fit that bill perfectly for me. I have never been a fan of this style of artwork and it always seemed too childish and never caught my appeal and yet seeing his work here it’s like looking at a masterpiece in action. It so perfectly embodies what this series is about and I cannot think of one single person who should do this instead. The way that page layouts are utilised and the angles and perspective we see in the panels showcase such a great eye for storytelling. The patterns, colours or lack thereof are brilliantly used and I love that nudity can be tastefully done and seem like nothing less than normal.

These are the adventures that seem so utterly random and yet have a place in the order of things that we cannot fathom yet. This is the definition of fun and quirky that is as entertaining and that’s why it’s a perennial favourite of all who read it.

Mountain View's secrets continue to unspool, even as Carter and Renae fight to protect Roger from the outside world...with deadly consequences.

Holy amazeballs people it seems everywhere I turn these days this a book, series or story that is just rocking my world. This one is out there and I love it, the idea of it, the reality and execution of it as well as sheer audacity of all of it combined needs nee begs for explanation and the reader isn’t going to go anywhere until that’s been done. Already the mind is blown and the comprehension of the situation is brought forth but the severity and complete and utter scope is barely scratched.

Kyle is weaving something that mixes a world at war, spy thriller and science fiction story together in this new creative way to keep us guessing at every turn. With this story while all the usual tricks apply, that attention grabbing opening which gives us backstory for example with something akin to almost a Captain America type in Carter and a whole familiar atmosphere lull the reader into believing this is something that it’s not. To find out what it is will require you actually reading the series but I gotta tell ya you will not be disappointed!

The way this is structured so we see the past and how it leads to the present does have a nice get to know you effect but it leaves so many questions unanswered and it’s bloody brilliant. When the reporter or writer or whatever he is and or was stumbles into town it literally feels the end is near and its going to set off that chain reaction that cannot be stopped. The teenagers born here are typical and want to know things and we see one question so much without any response that you just know something is going to come of it. It is very much like a Doozer structure, strong and sturdy but with a fragility to match.

So not to be outdone by the writing here Stephen and Jordie do some utterly sensational work here. Seriously I love the blond hair and how it looks here without all the black linework it’s pretty spectacular. Then there are the characters themselves the range of ages and ethnicities are amazingly diverse. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off Stephen’s stunning eye for storytelling. I am loving the attention to detail that he brings to the work and he manipulates the weight of the linework to create these people, this town and small details that show how far back progress is within the living population here.

The book really is stunning in so many ways. The way one action can lead directly into the past showing who that person used to be and in all the ways that count still is, is remarkably well done. Carter and Renae’s complicated history that has love, anger, deceit and yes respect is not only perfectly complicated but leaves you with the desire to know more. Inherently in a good story the characters come to life and make you want to like them or hate them and at the very least understand them but somehow Kyle manages to take that to a whole new level.

The ending for this issue threw me for a loop and a half. The interaction we see with Carter and Roger is pretty weird but still not outside the realm of believable. Then comes the last page and yeah mind blown completely through a black and hold and back to my head. The intensity of this story will not leave you to rest and i’m okay with that.

Stephenson and Dutch push survivor Christina for details she can't or won't respond while any day the Crippler may strike again.

Oh when I saw this in Previews for this weeks releases (that's how I know what is out each week) I was like hmm I recalled the name of the series vaguely and when I started to read this I got excited. It’s all coming back to me now (when you touch me like this, when you hold me like that) and with the opening of this issue the plan on how to get Christina in an open public setting is revealed and it really super scary to think that there are people out there who go missing like this all time, usually ending up in the sex trafficking trade or just plain murdered. So with a hot topic, rarely discussed premise here what James does is make an incredibly interesting story that could literally happen to anyone anywhere.

I am very much enjoying the way this book is structured. From the opening which is dramatic and filled with nothing people really want to see through the way the detectives work together to the cliffhanger ending the ebb & flow of the story is extremely well done. I also appreciate the fact that the story’s progression ties into the characters experiences and their characterisation so nicely. Everything is intertwined so that without one piece none of this works the way it should. Almost like a delicate house of cards kind of thing and that I am drawn to this.

Another aspect of this story that I am liking is the fact that Christina is the only survivor to date. So what makes her special, what is it about her that set her apart from the rest? She’s in the hospital and her parents aren’t keen on her answering any questions right now and the detectives well they are pressed for time and results, after all in real life the force is more than likely to pressure you to close and move onto the next in line. So it doesn’t surprise me that these two are asking questions as fast as possible it surprises me that they aren’t asking the right ones.

Bringing in someone to hypnotise the patient who has just built up those walls to hide what she has went through so quickly is asking for serious trouble. It is way too fresh, it is way too sensitive and the patient, Christina, well again why her and what makes her so damn special? No one here is prepared for what is about to happen and the fact that we can feel the tension that the characters do not only serves to enhance what I am experiencing.

The interiors here are okay, there are some very nice moments that show off the fact that the talent and skill are here and others that remind us that this is likely Purste’s first comic book work. Oh btw even in the age of the internet I cannot find out anything about Purste so I have no idea, gender or anything else so if you know I would love to. Still the utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a nice eye for storytelling. I will say that the dark road where she finds herself in her nightmare is so much more interesting than that of the real world we see. So much ambiance that’s beautiful ti is also where we see the best utilisation of backgrounds.

The ending took me by surprise and I loved that fact because not only hadn’t I been expecting it but it’s just that well done. I mean what I say about the writing here and how solid it is and the interiors do make a nice compliment to the story itself. This is just another of the growing reasons why you should reading more comics from outside the big two.

The refinery city of Blackstone is the new Russian frontier, stinking of oil, but offering money and sexual freedom to those brave enough to live there. Piotr Petrovich has come for revenge, to hunt his son’s killer. But what he finds is the most brutal fight of his life.

With only two issues in we are already seeing so much extraordinary characterisation in regards to Piotr. Life has been hard and his work was brutal and when he finally did retire he was left feeling directionless and lost. His son unable to be honest with his father and feeling like a man like him has no future he left after coming to grips with his sexual proclivities to go some place where that wouldn’t matter. Only with a father who was a stone cold killer it’s amazing how disconnected the two men were that he never attempted to teach his son how to fight. Granted he probably would’ve been fighting that but still it goes to show just how much regret and guilt he feels over the loss of his son.

The more I see Steve’s work on projects like this one the more I am thrilled by and scared of what he’s really capable of doing. This is the kind of writing where one gets to unleash and flourish and by the gods it’s the kid of work that mesmerises the reader and if I am completely honest should be winning industry awards. The whole flow of the book through the encounters past and present flesh out the man Piotr is and the kind of man he wishes he’d been. Meeting the kid with the stand feels like a standout moment to me to be quite frank it wouldn’t surprise me to see him attach himself to him as some sort of self-imposed penance for what he did wrong.

Now that we are in Blackstone we are beginning to see more and more of the way things work here. With gang style factions battling each other for power and control with the regular working folk caught in the middle leaves little hope. Again this an example of exemplary storytelling and it works by weaving and out of characterisation, circumstances, actions and the work Garry does on the interiors. it’s like to a classical concert that infuses a rock band to create this whole unique experience that you just can’t find anywhere else. It is that fusion that makes this so damn good.

Garry kind of burst onto the scene one day and made such a splash with his unique style which is absolutely perfect for this. The linework is very distinct and he’s able to manipulate the varying weights so beautifully. I feel like everything we see is just that much better than the time before and with Steve the two them kind of “hitting their stride” together is scary magnificent to see. The way that page layouts are utilised and they enable us to see the angles and perspective in the angles shows this beautiful eye for storytelling. I love the attention to detail that we see and everything is so damn expressive and adds that element to the storytelling that words just can’t do. Me wanting more backgrounds will never change and I would love to see how they could expand the city itself.

There is something going on here that runs much deeper than Piotr could ever have expected and he’s going to start finding out how deep this river really runs. It has elements of a film franchises ranging from Bourne to Taken and while the excitement is prevalent and has action galore the story itself has bite equal to the action. This is the future of comics, incredibly interesting solid storytelling through story/plot development and characterisation wrapped up in highly expressive interiors that grips the reader in ways you aren’t going to expect.

The Gingerdead Man Meets Evil Bong #2

The Gingerdead Man Meets Evil Bong #2
Action Lab Entertainment/Full Moon Presents 2018
Written by Brockton McKinney
Illustrated by Sergio Rios
Coloured by Rosa “Rosakaz” Rantila
Lettered by Micah Myers

Gingerdead Man returns from his exile in Bong World, but the Candy Wizard has granted him a terrible wish! To make matters even worse, the evil Synthia has returned with her VHS Misfits, a group of cyborgs compiled from Gingerdead Man’s previous victims! Now it’s up to Eebee the Evil Bong and Lana the shopkeeper to roll up their problems and smoke out the truth!

I do not advocate the usage of psychotropic drugs but man a part of me wishes I still dropped acid or did shrooms because I will be damned it that wouldn’t completely trip me the effe out. Already this is beyond hysterical and we finally see the tiny cookie dough penis on the Gingerdead Man, c’mon its dough y’all could’ve been more imaginative and creative with it. Why is it so awkward of uncomfortable for men to draw and show off someone, or something’s manhood?

I think as I get older I find a greater appreciation for this kind of off the rails vulgar humour. Because while it may be a seventeen year old boys mindset it’s also got some depth to it that goes beyond the surface and it entire effect that Brockton brings to this really makes it what it is. The characterisation the way the potty mouth spews uncooked raw marijuana dough is perfectly timed and delivered by these characters in ways that are flawless. This is the kind of writing that actors kill over roles for it’s just that damn good and if you don’t think so look back at Betty White in Lake Placid lol.  Also that the entire universe seems out to get him well that just means it's a race against time to see who gets to whom first!   Now I want to see Purple Pieman and Dick Dastardly in wacky racer.

I want to say that the way the book is structured and the overall ebb & flow were surprisingly good but I can’t. Brockton has shown us time and again that’s he one helluva excellent and creative writer. Just the fact that this book exists and it’s not some cheesy ass mockery made just sell off the names involved but is a viable story that mixes way too many familiar themes (or franchises) and still manages to make this the kind of adult horror comedy that the Scary Movie franchise would die to emulate.

I wasn’t even sure that any of these characters would come to my attention let alone become an active part in my vernacular. Yet here we are and I cannot imagine life without these characters any longer. So regardless of the stoner flicks of your youth this is one that will you back to those days fondly and if you never touched anything of that sort (boring much? Just kidding but wow) the pacing, the delivery of and just the sheer amount of adult oriented humour will get you to crack more than a smile. Not to mention Synthia and her team making a dramatic return after being totally bushwhacked by Gingerdead Man in the first volume.

I love the interiors here, yes penis rant above included. I mean it has the all-ages aspect to it when we clearly know otherwise. Yes I want more backgrounds being used I mean they are in a head shoppe and I am still underwhelmed by what we do and don’t see. I will give major credit and kudos on the V.H.S. Misfits character design and implementation. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a really solid eye for storytelling. Also the fact that can see how expertly the linework has been manipulated through its varying weights to show off some nice attention to the details is wonderfully done.

There are those companies who make films because they love what they do. Full Moon is one of them they all aren’t cult classics or even beloved by the mainstream world. They do what they do and sometimes they hit a home-run and others they strike out. Brockton and Sergio make an excellent pair and with Rozakaz and Micah rounding out the team they manage to elevate stoner bathroom humour to a level that’s acceptable even in high society.

Grimm Tales of Terror vol.4 #2
Zenescope Entertainment 2018

A man receives what seems to be a random “chain letter” email stating that he must do something unspeakable or risk losing those most important to him. What seems like an innocuous hoax soon proves otherwise, and one man must break the curse before it’s too late.

I want more. Pure and simple what Ralph does here is utterly sensational and in one single issue he manages to create a story idea that could turn into something completely new. Find a character who tries to chase down the sender of emails as they try to get the curse to stop and failing miserably until they catch a break and find it’s source. Do you see what I just did there? I took a single one and done story and created something of a franchise out of it that was so much better than that horrible 2010 cinematic feature. The creative mind could be like Saw in how the characters are killed or just the way we see them here as these accidental coincidences. Just remember there are no coincidences in life.

There are always going to be things that kind of mess up the feng shui the trick is seeing them for what they are and let em go. Keres should be more of a Crypt Keeper kind of character if it’s really necessary to keep using her here. Otherwise I think it’s wasted space and the fact she throws out the origin of the chain letter idea that doesn’t somehow relate to the story in way other than to let my imagination run while with story arc ideas well while interesting it isn’t relevant to the story at hand. Regardless of all that Ralph manages to create, tell and weave a one and done story worthy of the Tales of Terror brand.

The way the story is structured is extremely well done. The story is easy to follow and while you can almost guess what’s going to happen to see it unfold the way it does is fun to experience. I really thought things would play out a little differently than it did and I am a little surprised and if I am honest pleasantly happy with the end result. The characterisation and storytelling are great and it reminds of the biggest drawback when it is a one and done story, you find someone or something that you really like but then it’s done and just like that a cog in the wheel of history.

The interiors are kind of a mixed bag for me as well. There is some really nice attention to detail and the varying weights within the use of linework is nice to see. There are however inconsistencies in faces, body proportion that make Keres and Steve both seem like multiple people are interchanged throughout their appearances. Which is kind of a shame because if that could ironed out this would be some stellar interiors. The utilisation of backgrounds really expands moments beautifully too.

Zenescope continues to introduce me to new artistic talent and provide some great stories to be told. Ralph keeps proving to me time and again that’s he growing as a storyteller and is more than capable of providing us with high tier work. There is a reason why I am both reticent and excited by this series month and month out. This could totally be expanded into something more that it was intended to be and here’s hoping someday someone pick up that thread. So until next month where I eagerly await what they have in store.

Swag Patrol #1
Fantasyart Comics 2015
Written by Rubyn Warren II & Gabe Smith
Illustrated by Gabe Smith & Mar Marvida
Cover by Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz
Lettered & Script Assist by Vince White

After some horseplay in their science teacher’s laboratory, three teens: Rashad, Mya and Chris, are exposed to unknown chemicals granting them extraordinary abilities. After initial reluctance the three decide to become heroes with the guidance of Dr. Tre’, their science teacher. However their emergence has garnered the attention of others as well.

This is another example of how well word of mouth works. Rubyn was referred to my site from someone who’s work I have reviewed in the past. Now I will say this if you are going to be referred and contact someone out of the blue here’s a few guidelines, introduce yourself, your company or at the very least the book you represent so that I can have the opportunity to get excited by what your asking me to review. That and along with the cover and first three pages to run in a review goes a long way. Also a little background of yourself, the how and why of wanting to be in the industry, these little things go a long way in getting me to actually review the work. Also make sure the pdf you are sending out is consistent and doesn’t change page sizes unnecessarily.   Also let me know where people can find this to order it instead of making me search it really does help.

The opening here is nicely done and while I understand why his students call him Dr. Tre I wish it didn’t sound so Hip Hop related but hey it does bring a bit of culture I am not used to the forefront and that alone is fantastic. Also it leads directly into the opening which is a nice way of introducing the book to new readers. As this is my first exposure to the book and the creators it is important to get me involved or invested right away and it does a fairly good job at doing that.

The way the book is structured so that we get a solid ebb & flow to the story is well done. I like seeing things unfold and while the credits page includes a what’s come before (the first paragraph here) the progression of seeing them get their suits for the first time is interesting to see. While the chemical spill might not be the most creative origin story around it’s a tried and true method though lets face it it’s really about how they bond with said chemicals that makes things more believable and acceptable. So hopefully Dr. Tre will also be able to infuse some credible science into this, okay comic book science based on real world applications.

While in no way shape or form do I want this be something of a cliché I would like to appeal the broadest audience it can find. So wherever this fictional city is located I am hoping it gets a more decidedly European feel in how people relate to one another. Also forgive an old man who isn’t hip to today’s lingo and doesn’t understand half of what was said here, though I know it’s young folk talk and I believe that seeing the word Fleek in print physically made me cringe. Still the characterisation seems pretty good from what I can understand here. There is one thing with Dr. Tre we see here that is a little more cliché than I’d like and you can probably guess what I am referring to if you read the book.

I am okay with the work in the interiors here. it’s a tad simple and what we’d expect to see early in someone’s career. The basics are solid and body proportions are nice to see. There are times when the hair and eyes seem more cartoon/doll esque than I'd care for but that’s a part of maturation process as well. Consistency will come with experience as well and it is something to look forward to seeing and when Mark takes over the illustrations here you can see a huge difference. The use of page layouts and the angles and perspective we see in the panels plus the utilisation of backgrounds make the interiors a nice joy.

I think this book shows promise. There are a few elements that show off imagination or a lack-thereof but overall it is intriguing enough to want to see more. A solid base on which to build upon this is why we look outside the box and find creators to spotlight.

Violete Unstoppable #1
Shades of Vengeance 2018
Written by Ed Jowett & Jennifer Martin
Illustrated by Rahmat Wisnubroto
Lettered by Johnathan Lewis

Being a lone hero seems easy initially, but when the police hate you and supervillains are running around, who can you turn to help? Despite working to prove herself through stopping crimes all over the city, the police still frown on her activities as the masked vigilante Violete. Even so, all is going fairly well until one of the criminals she has caught before escapes from prison.

I have said it before and I will say it again sometimes being a review site gives me the opportunity to find companies and creators that I would otherwise have no idea existed. More so when you see the kind of potential that I see here in this book. Is it perfect, no not by any means but it has enough bones in it to grab the attention, see it’s potential and want to know more. Ironically one of the things that can be seen as a detractor I see as a positive.

That is the fact that there is a lot going on here and we’re jumping into the deep end blind. This not only establishes Viola as a heroine and shows off the fact that the local coppers don’t like having her here, well not all of them anyway, and begins to flesh her our for the reader while still keeping us wondering what the heck is going on. So for me the way this is structured is pretty well done. Think of this as an introduction to an established character but no so established that she’s a welcome sight. So it is very much filled with those annoying, how did she get her powers, what event led her down this path and why on Earth would she choose a name so close to her own? All of which I am sure will be answered as the series continues to progress.  In the meantime it is fun to see a character trying to figure it out on their own and not being able to have anywhere to turn.

I am hoping that this is set in England otherwise the whole Underground Station has me in the wrong frame of mind. Also I hope this means that perhaps we will also get to see more slang terminology in use so that it feels a lot more European than American in nature. The mystery’s that abound within these pages are nicely done. While I believe that at least one isn’t there to harm her but find a way to help her or offer her a job on a team or some such could still be in play here.

I feel like this is a computer generated book and as such is the work of someone giving this all they have. They don’t have the finesse or fine touches that we are used to seeing or that are capable in today’s software and experience. Faces and how they change in different angles needs some monitoring. If this is computer generated then there really isn’t an excuse for the lack of backgrounds that we see and there should be more to really flesh out the story, the city, the scenery and show off the bigger picture. I do like the way page layouts are being utilised and how we see the different angles and perspective in the panels.

With more work on the characterisation and transitioning from scene to scene we will see a lot more smoothness to them than what we see now. That will come with more experience and that I can see where the story is going but needs smoothing out to make it work better well that’s to be expected. I like what I am seeing, warts and all, and it shows a lot of promise. I like the idea behind her and what she represents. The old school ideology of the police not accepting masked heroes who operate outside the law goes back to when heroes had to really go that extra mile and figure out how to operate and maintain a secret identity which is extremely hard.

Everything about this shows off its potential there is a whole line of books from these folks and I’ll provide the link so you can check em out for yourself. Still do yourself a favour check em out because this is what the future looks like.

Ruin of Thieves: A Brigands Story #1
Action Lab Danger Zone 2018
Written by Ram V

At the end of their flight, Davoran asks Griz what it was that Stilian could offer and he couldn’t. “Second Chances,” Griz replies. And so, our band of Brigands set out on a ship even as The Myros Comet lights up the sky. they’re on their way to Krantal, where second chances lie just beyond te horizon. But in the Krantali desert of Rhool, an army captain called Emir and a priest named Hadib Tuat are making their own preparation to prevent the artifact from being stolen. In the whispering dunes the sun plays evil tricks on the mind. Second chances are just a mirage after all and the only thing that awaits in the desert is the Ruin of Thieves…..

I like this series it isn’t quite Dungeons & Dragons nor is Conan but it has all the elements of both franchises. The Mercenaries with hearts is one that while all too common has nowhere near reached a limit of being played out. That they’ve been brought together and now they are currently staying together is part of the overall charm here. The way the book is structured and how we experience the ebb & flow of the story is extremely well done. The transitions are smooth and seamless and help us get from point A. to B. with ease.

The opening here is spectacular to see. The first page with it’s weird mix of science and magic to predict where the comet comes closest to the ground is something. What I don’t know and I am not terribly upset about that either because as the story moves forward we will undoubtedly uncover the secrets that we’re given. Then to see the young goat herder and our first look at the comet it all has the benchmarks for the story to showcase villainy without actually introducing us the actual villains and that kind of work is immeasurable in our enjoyment of it.

There is a lot to be said for ambiance in a story and whether that comes from the writing through dialogue or direction to the illustrator so long as it all comes together like we see it doing here. While this is a group of Brigands and as a general rule they are an unsavoury lot but something about our group here while sharing that definition is also the complete opposite because there is something about them that is endearing and though they have a mission to undertake seeing those in need of help is something they cannot overlook. It is like that mountain of a man who has a kitten and cries at chick flicks.

I am a huge fan and supporter of the work that we see in the interiors here. The way page layouts are utilised and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off this amazingly good eye for storytelling. The linework that we see is pretty damn solid work as it expertly mixes in varying weights so that the attention to detail whether it’s intently shown or a more subtle backdrop it has so much expression in it. I love the fact that even when it’s dark in nature there’s still so much attention to detail and that it completely has this whole universal appeal to it.

With the introduction of new characters, a new mission and new frenemies to account for the action here has only just begun and already I kind of want to join them. The characterisation, story/plot development that is happening here envelops you into this world and just holds your attention rapt. This is a fabulous example why I am huge fan of thinking outside the ordinary and experiencing storytelling that will unexpectedly take you some place you’ve never been.

Quicksilver in No Surrender #1
Marvel Comics 2018

Quicksilver's super-speed and abrasive personality have always isolated him, but he's never been truly alone…until now. Trapped beyond the perception of friends, family and allies, Quicksilver wages a one-man guerilla war against a monster that he's not even sure is real, to save a world that he may never be a part of again.

Over the years Pietro has been so many things to so many people including himself that he tends to switch personalities as fast as he runs. Though to be fair he’s been portrayed as this morose loner who cared about nothing other than his sister and while he’s done a lot with his life he’s never stopped for more than a moment to really look at himself well. The retrospective Pietro is the one I like as he searches for meaning and the truth something he can hold on to. His time under Jamie in X-Factor is probably some of the best he’s ever been written.

I can already tell you that the way this has been structured is amazing to me. I love the whole ebb & flow of what we see and how the mission he’s on is the reason he’s running and talking about all the events in his life that got him to this point. So for new readers who haven’t had the pleasure of being exposed to Pietro that much over the years are in for a treat and long time fans will appreciate the quick recap. This is one of those rare times when the narration boxes while plentiful aren’t really under used. It really is the only way we can hear Pietro’s thoughts as he running at speeds that man wasn’t meant to run at.

The characterisation here is pretty darn spectacular too and I feel like Saladin is exploring the many different iterations of Pietro as he tries to figure out which one he is. Granted each new experience continues to shape who we are and whatever the High Evolutionary did to him I believe it increased his anger along with his speed. That is jut a theory I have but it’s sound enough all things considered with how many different attempts at being a good man he’s been through. I do like how we see Pietro explore himself, what used to make him happy then realises that it doesn’t still hold true. I don’t know it’s very cerebral and existential so for me it’s a darn good read!

One the selling points on this book for me was seeing the interior artwork. There is something familiar and yet new, fresh and unique about what Eric is doing here. Also the fact that Rico colours this so darn well that’s just an added bonus. Also I have to say I am digging the outfit that Pietro has on here it comes across extremely well on paper. The way that Eric is able to manipulate the linework through it’s varying weights to create something special in how we see how Pietro sees the world is exceptionally well done.

I like how this story is being told and for a loner to truly be alone well there’s a paradox that you don’t normally think of or expect when you think about it. Also that this story takes place within another story well I find that intriguing. I think Pietro is one of the most complicated men to ever have been created in comics. From brother, to lover, to husband to villain to hero and every slice you can think of in-between the complicated flavours here are extremely nuanced.

This is the kind of storytelling that I love from Marvel. That it’s a five issue run is great and if it follows local indie blueprint it should be the first of many. There is a nice brilliance to way this has been put together and I look forward to seeing it completely unfold.
