Wonder Woman #5
DC Comics 2016
Written by Greg Rucka
Illustrated by Liam Sharp
Coloured by Laura Martin
Lettered by Jody Wynne

Steve Trevor finds himself trapped in the heart of Urzkartaga’s darkness, with Wonder Woman and Cheetah the only hope of rescue for him and his men. But how far can Cheetah be trusted?

I understand the rumblings around the interwebs that I hear regarding this series but for me I’m a staunch believer that this is as interesting, exciting and compelling as the series has ever been.  That being said i’m not a fan of the racial swapping of characters but in this instance Etta’s portrayal at least as the heavier woman in a position of rank and power well that I do enjoy seeing.  So it’s nice to see that at least part of what makes her who she is is still intact.

The opening with Etta and Sasha, whom I’m going to assume is Bordeaux from Checkmate fame, and how they talk about what’s happening and the connection that Diana and Steve have was wonderfully done.  In such a short amount of space Greg can pack in some absolutely strong writing, development and characterization and that’s great to see.

Also the way he’s able to tie in the same theme the girls talk about into what is happening with Steve and his captor is why I think that his work becomes so influential over time.  It’s not just that either because as the story flows into the further conversation between Diana and Cheetah the same theme permeates.  It’s like he’s found a way to script this so that Diana isn’t the only one who can “turn a phrase like a poet.”

In case you are wondering the theme of which I’m referring and to which this book started out on is that of the Gods.  Diana knows her memories have been messed with, cannot get back home to Themyscira nor can contact her patrons so she’s on a journey of self-discovery which has led her here.  Steve’s captor has his own fascination with his god Urzkartaga.  The god theme is strong with this one and it’s appropriate and interesting to explore different beliefs from different areas.

Liam can be considered something of a demi-god here with the quality of work he’s producing.  I mean the creativity in page layouts, the attention to detail and his ability to convey so much emotion, feelings and desires, not mention downright creepiness, is astounding.  What he and Laura are doing with the interiors can’t be beat.

There are plenty of surprises that occur in this issue and they are wonderful to see.  Plus with this god Urzkartaga and how he’s portrayed it’d be a good time for Swamp Thing to appear as well i’d love to see how he, the Green, the Parliament of Trees all fit into the world where Gods are real.  I also hope that we’ll see more of the workings of organisations such ARGUS, Checkmate and the other spy types that are currently operating, though maybe not Omacs.  Tying in all aspects of Wonder Woman’s past into the series is something that is important to see and while she may not be Diana Prince of the War Department that part of her will never be forgotten.

I’m a huge fan of the writing, story direction, characterization and of the stellar interiors in re-creating a cohesive and solid background once again that these folks are bringing us.

Death Force #4 (of 6)
Zenescope Entertainment 2016
Written by Joe Brusha
Illustrated by Marc Rosete
Coloured by Walter Pereyra
Lettered by Fabio Amelia

Death Force is literally pulled out of the fire by his new ally Missy Werner, who is on a mission to avenge her father’s untimely death, caused by the corruption of Mayor Deveraux. Soon after, a battle with a SWAT team leads to a confrontation between Death Force and the
monster that dwells inside Talon. With the lives of thousands on the line, can Missy and Death Force make it out with their own?

Maybe it’s just me but why does the demon keep using his name, it seems kind of redundant to keep using that much when we all know whom he means after the first time.  Meh otherwise hey this issue was an improvement for me.  I like the way the story progresses, the pacing is good and I found myself more interested in what was happening.   Now that Rick and Missy have met and the story becomes bigger and more involved it’s playing out on the pages much better.

The fight to open the book is a holdover from last issue where we left off.  It’s not a bad fight and i’m kind of surprised that the demon ran off so quickly but then again he did it in such grand fashion that it sure made one heck of a statement.  I really enjoyed what happened next inside Missy’s van.  As she and Rick are mapping out what to do they get a surprise visitor and new ally in Roberts, Rick’s old partner.

Suddenly the conspiracy is out in the open and while Missy’s actions start to bear fruit a plan is in place to start dealing with what’s happening.  It’s like suddenly the story is clicking into place and it’s exciting now.  With the build up of what’s to come looming we are getting into the meaty stuff and this is where Joe is shining right now.  The slower paced getting into the story lacked a bit of oomph so it’s nice to see that the latter half is compensating for that start.

Marc’s interiors here are a huge draw for me.  Aside from Missy’s outfit which I can’t decide if it’s supposed to be Hipster (hat, scarf and bare midriff) or just plain let’s show a little skin.  His eye for storytelling and the way he uses the panels throughout the pages to control the flow of the story with angles and perspective and what I love the most the use of backgrounds is extremely well done.  He brings a lot of emotion and feeling to the work here and it makes the story much enjoyable to see through all this attention to detail.

This story still confirms what I really enjoy about the company lately and that’s it’s move to smarter more intelligent storytelling and less cheesecake.  The corruption and use of gangs and power plays we are seeing here are things we can relate to seeing on the news even if the solution is purely comics.  So it’s good to see that we have this male lead character who’s something of a badass and draws a supporting cast that he can rely on who are ordinary people with skills that allow them to do extraordinary things.

While this may work better as a trade, ie all read at once, it’s worth reading as it’s getting stronger as it goes on.

Renato Jones the ONE% #4
Image Comics 2016
By Kaare Kyle Andrews
Lettered & Designed by Jeff Powell
Flats by Alice Ito

We like to throw words around like innovative, unique, bold and daring when we describe things and that’s because the sensationalist society we live in needs them to garner attention.  So when a book really is one of those rare entities that encompasses those words it seems your voice gets lost in a sea sound.   Hopefully however those words have some power still left in them and will get your attention and check out something that excites the writer, like myself, who reviews a series.

What Kaare manages to bring to us is this incredible story about a boy who is brought home and isn’t who he is supposed to be.  The original Renato Jones was killed by his grandmother and the family butler then raised him to adulthood in order to fulfill his own agenda.  Renato is a trained killer now and his target is the ONE% of society who think they are immune to the laws that govern society.  He shows us an rivaled look at their sense of entitlement and depravity in search of new depths of pleasure and ways of making themselves even richer.

The way he spends time in each issue showcasing Renato’s youth balanced with his adult self we see how he was raised and how came to be in love with Bliss.  His best friend in all the world who understands him better than even the man who raised him.  There’s one thing that she has in common with his surrogate father however and that’s that they both know how to play him like a fiddle and have done so since they’ve first met.

No one gets killed this issue it’s all about characterization and background information.  It’s a great look at Renato, growing up and that the staff see him as touched as his mother kind of cements the fact they believe him to be the real mccoy.  I love the way that this issue ties into what we’ve already seen as well.  Bliss’ father was warned that the killer was close to him and suspicion was thrown Renato’s way though unconfirmed as of yet.  It’s an amazing way to keep the story moving forward while focusing on the past and actually getting us to see a young boys motivation to be led to the path he’s on now.

Kaare’s unique style of illustrative artwork is as strong and powerful as his words are.  It’s like he’s totally unafraid to go full on balls to the wall and show us things that would give others pause.  The use of pages and panels have this original quality to them that you can’t see anywhere else and it’s the little touches, like the opening pages feeling like old photos with lines and creases, that makes this stand out.  He’s got this amazing eye for storytelling and he has this instinctual knack for what to focus on and give you that impact the story so deserves.

There’s something about the one man is able to do the writing and illustration in a series that makes it seem that much more impressive.  The talent on display is so astonishing and the imagination and creativity we get to witness is beyond imagining.  This is why we read comics and get lost in creator owned projects and crave those ideas that stand out.  This is what you need to be reading and what other creators need to take notice of.

Dungeons & Dragons Shadows of the Vampire #4
IDW Publishing 2016
Written by Jim Zub
Illustrated by Nelson Daniel
Lettered by Neil Uyetake

The heroes of Baldur's Gate have been pulled into the Realm of Terror known as Ravenloft. The key to their salvation may be close at hand, a magical locket in their possession, but undead forces are hunting for it and danger looms around every darkened corner of this cursed land where the sun does not rise…

If you aren’t reading this you are missing out on some excellent stuff.  I mean a team built of strangers banded together by circumstance and bonded by action and forged friendship under hardship is exactly what any team is built upon.  They have their own skills and powers that aid them in their battles and diverse personalities that make them more unique.  The way Jim writes this series blends the feeling of being in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign with a traditional superhero adventure so that it’s literally for everyone to enjoy!

We open this issue as our heroes arrive in Barovia.  A town much too close the darkness and death where it’s citizens live in constant fear and are weary of strangers as they’ve heard the proclamations of freedom from them in the past.  Those proclamations always proved to be boastful and ineffective.

The characterization is superb, I love how Jim constantly shows off their personalities through the dialogue here.  Minsc is just the most loveable oaf ever created as his childlike intuition and thirst for battle and play are unrivaled.  The evolution of our cleric and her acceptance of her fellow travelers is great to see as well in the midst of battle.  Speaking of I love good battles and Jim can do those incredible well.

The story pacing is fantastic as shortly after arriving in town our band of heroes who’ve been tracked for days are attacked.  The townsfolk of course run and cower in fear and don’t want them to win if they are to survive.  They have no idea that this band of heroes are unlike any they’ve known before.  From another land and tested like none other this band even without a connection to this land can fight and win.  The real question is what cost is their victory and to whom?

I like Nelson’s interiors.  They remind of an animated movie and honestly they make me with these were made into animated dvd movies.  His use of angles and perspective to showcase the flow of the battle and the story itself is incredibly well done.  I love the individuality he brings to the characters and the strategic use of backgrounds, though i’d love to see more of those used.  He does an excellent job though of bringing this to life and making it enjoyable for anyone of any age.

This is the series that proves it’s not just for gamers it’s for fans of team books and heroes.  With a great premise, interesting characters, dynamic characterization and strong interiors this is one that will thrill anyone who reads it.

Dark Souls #4
Titan Comics 2016
Written by George Mann
Illustrated by Alan Quah
Coloured by Komikaki Studio feat. Sean Lee
Lettered by Rob Steen

With the last relic claimed, Fira’s quest reaches its final chapter as the brave warrior and her questionable companion set course for Andolus, with Ishra’s redemption at their very fingertips…

Alright so it’s the finale here and I have to say that George takes us on a journey here.  With everything we’ve seen thus far and the fact that Fira fell to the fate of the living dead as she and the Scryer embark on their quest.  The Quest to save all life and fix the dead world upon which they live.  Noble to say the least.

I am beyond amazed at the interior artwork throughout this series.  From Alan’s linework to the digital colouring process that just makes this so darn good it’s one of the highlights for me.  The sheer amount of attention to detail here is phenomenal I’ve been so impressed and blown away each issue.  The flow of the book through it’s pages and panels by using angles and perspective and backgrounds has been great to see.

After the opening here which served to demonstrate the call of the dead to battle, quite well I might add, we meet one new character.  Jarus arrives on the scene and he too wears the armour of her order.  Only here we see the full extent of her memory loss and how the Scryer’s role in all this comes into further play.  The writing here has been surprisingly good as I have no idea of the original game material this taken from.  The characterization and story development have been interesting and make me want to explore this world more fully.

With the appearance of Jarus and that Fira isn’t the last of her order there is room for more of that exploration.  Whom else has survived the terrible events they currently seek to reverse?  Also since this is the final issue of this chapter there’s room to see what the results of this issue mean for this world.  What happens next and what new hope and horrors arise from it?  Not to mention what happened to those who are the living dead and have no more memory of their former lives and roam the world looking for fights and to kill.

How this played out is exceptional.  I couldn’t have been prepared for the truths that were revealed or the judgment of the characters in this situation.  As everything we’ve seen so far is revealed to have been false truths planted in Fira’s mind in order to make her a more willing accomplice or tool for the Scryer.  I can’t believe how George manages to flip the script so utterly and completely here and you have to truly experience it to really understand the whole scope of what happens and has happened.

If you haven’t read George’s work you really should because the kind of story this man can tell in four issues will amaze you.  The characterization, story development and advancement have really drawn me into this world and left me desiring more.  For those that play the video game or not you’re going to get lost in this and think four issues just aren’t enough.

Monsters Among Us #3
Tidalwave Comics 2016
Written by Andrew Shayde
Illustrated by by Levy Zimer
Coloured by by Silvio Spotti
Lettered by Flavio B. Silva

By luck or by misfortune these monsters have ended up together.  Having been hunted and rounded up by Solomon Kane and his distorted and violent version of faith, they’re first instinct is to run.  Now seeking vengeance and the chance to save others like them they are returning to Kane’s prison to free the monsters that were left behind in their cells whose fate is clearly death.

When I reviewed issue one I said that Andrew had the potential to become a good solid writer and it with each new issue he’s proving that statement correct.  The progression, pacing and dialogue are becoming tighter and smoother.  The characterization of these characters is strong and I like what i’m seeing here.  This is definitely the beginning a new franchise series as I can see these so-called monsters staying together as a team and doing some good work together.  Provided they survive whatever it is Andrew has in store for them.

This group of reluctant and eclectic heroes has sure gotten my attention.  I like the way they’ve been bonding together as they make their way back to the Castle to free the other monsters Kane has collected.  Even the fiery temper of Zaya whose own evolution seems to be taking something of a radical turn after last issue’s shocking events.  The two-page spread of them all on the raft with the narration of what each is thinking really goes that extra mile with their mindsets and what we can kind of expect from them.

In a certain regard the team reminds me of the Dragonlance characters and the Chupacabra is much like Tasslehoff in that he marches to beat of his own drummer.  Loyal to a fault and willing to do anything for his friends he’s an odd creature who just happens to steal every scene he’s in.  I love this aspect about him because with all the seriousness that the others are feeling he’s that moment of levity and fun that balances it all out.

The pacing for this issue is great and while it seems to move pretty fast all of the characters are placing themselves on the board in right spots for the final big confrontation.  Through the events we see in this issue some have even newer reasons for becoming the monster that Kane thinks they are all the while he’s the one making them that way.  It’s a vicious circle and it seems Kane himself in righteous quest has become the biggest monster of them all.

The interiors here have been really very good.  I like the almost animation style that Levy brings to the book.  His use of angles, perspective and most importantly backgrounds in the panels as the flow through the books pages really help you feel the characters emotions and enjoy the action.  There’s some really strong attention to detail as well and the colouring is spot on all around.  They bring this life really well and do justice to Andrew’s vision.

This keeps getting stronger and stronger and it’s great to see.  With a great premise and interesting characters this could be one of those series that we see regular arcs of in mini-series form.  Both Andrew and the characters evolution is something worth keeping an eye on as I think you’ll agree we can expect great things from them in the future.  Now bring on the finale!

Reeling from the revelation that he’s a time traveling assassin, Martin comes up against his most complex mission yet. Secrets from his past are brought to light as he struggles to complete his task—will he survive long enough to save reality?

Okay now I like the way that Frank has structured this series so far.  We are still learning things as they go along with Marty.  His relationship with his father is further explained as we get to see more of Marty’s past and it’s good bit of characterization and we begin to understand Marty that much better.  I think it’s really done a great job in getting me to like Marty more as a person and understand where he’s coming from and how he gained is his “unique” skill set.

All the story that happens between father and son is only the tip of the iceberg here.  Yes it sets the tone and stage for the entire series but there’s more to this than their tenuous relationship.  With each issue we see more and more what Marty is capable of doing and this issue Frank throws in a few surprises.  I like that already we’re seeing Marty who doesn’t want to question why he only receives names of people to kill, letting it get personal means it gets messy after all.  However trust can only take him so far and sooner or later he’s going to come up against something that makes him appear less an obedient lapdog and more of a human being.

Frank is also doing something here that’s really appreciated and that’s Marty’s narration.  As he sits in a diner waiting for a way to find his newest target we get his thoughts on how he goes about things, the length of time he’s in any one time period and how he keeps his low profile.  He doesn’t have to spend a lot time on it but it’s extremely effective and fills in the gaps without having to do unnecessary interaction with another person to take up space.

Garry’s interiors are great for this series as well.  His style here is uniquely his and what he brings to this in terms of expression and detail is wonderfully done.  Along with the amazing colour work from Lauren this series really pops.  I am very much enjoying the flow of each issue through it’s pages and panels with Garry’s use of perspective and angles.  There’s some wonderfully original work happening here and makes for an exciting read.

Time traveling assassin on a mission from his estranged father who is using him for his own end means is a great premise.  It’s also great to see how Frank is having all this play out as we keep learning more and more about all the characters involved.

Aftershock is the new home for creator owned properties that are sure to thrill and entertain readers.  Look out world there’s no stopping them now!

Zoe Dare vs. Disasteroid #3

Zoe Dare vs the Disasteroid #3
Action Lab Entertainment 2016
Written by Brockton McKinney
Illustrated by Andrew Herman

Alien overlord Z’Ntar is revealed, and Zoe Dare learns the shocking secret behind the Disasteroid’s true intent! On Earth the communication feed with the space crew is abruptly cut, and Danni Dare tries to convince wisecrackin’ robot J.J. to help Zoe—by taking a dangerous one-way trip into space!

Well this issue isn’t anything like was expecting it to be so kudos to Brockton for keeping me on my toes as I read this story.  I will say that this has gone from that all-ages it started out to be for T for Teen title and i’m kind of thrilled by that.  I mean we’re seeing more character development this issue in surprising ways as well the truth about why Z’Ntar is on vengeance kick against Earth.

Meanwhile on Earth Danni takes matters into her own hands not only showing her intuition and innovation but also her smarts.  It’s nice to see that her love for her sister and the way she can think outside the box are what make her the woman she is.   Plus with the way Brockton does the dialogue here you’ve just got no choice but to admire her spunk and attitude.

Andrew’s interiors here are as sharp as ever.  While still maintaining that all-ages feel he infuses that with his own unique style and attention to detail to make this standout.  While I wish he would utilize backgrounds more to help us flesh out the scenes more fully his use of angles and perspective are smartly done.  The flow of the book is great and the emotions that the characters give off are easily readable.

I like that the more we see of Z’Ntar the more weird he becomes.  I mean is he really trying to feel up Zoe in that panel or is it just a case of him being some weirdo who has no clue as to what he’s doing.  What he says about that well it made me laugh honestly.  I’m having so much fun reading this story and how the seriousness behind it and the absurdity of it all interplay is something Brockton should take pride in.

While Zoe was captured by Yono, Race managed to get the Captain back to the shuttle.  Though before Race can mount a rescue of Zoe he’s got a few things of his own to deal with.  Gotta say this whole segment took me surprise and I like that.  Yono sure does get around i’ll say that much, stealthy and effective she’s a woman on a mission and she’s just hella dangerous.  You kind of have to admire her even if she’s a “bad guy” in all this.  Though what her connection to Z’Ntar truly is, she’s got to be more than his right hand “man”, hasn’t been revealed she does seem to relish what she does for him.

I’m totally appreciative of the work that’s being done here.  It’s a great science fiction action adventure story that isn’t predictable.  It’s that unpredictability which makes it one of the more interesting stories around.

Weird Detective #3
Dark Horse Comics 2016
Written by Fred Van Lente
Illustrated by Guiu Vilanova
Coloured by Mauricio Wallace
Lettered by Nate Piekos of Blambot

DETECTIVE GREENE has managed to give his partner, Detective Fayez, the slip and continues his hunt for the Juice Box Killer! Greene’s investigation leads him to the “tainted” Anzio crime family’s barge in the harbor. Has he found the answers, or is he in over his head?

I think one of the more interesting aspects of this story so far is that Greene and Fayez are cops doing cop things.  Meaning following suspects, even if it’s her own partner, taking down mobsters and dealing with daily life that just happens to have weird creatures that come from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft and are brought to life by Fred and Guiu.   I’ve extolled the genius of Fred’s writing and i’ll continue to do so because how he can blend a modern day Noir and Horror story into a cop book is something i’m at a loss to explain.

Last issue Greene found himself facing off against the mob who have a unique way of solving their problems.  Taking the opportunity while he was out Fayez sneaks onto his boathouse to snoop around.  Okay while she can’t hear the cat think he’s still one of the greatest characters in this book.  He steals whatever scene he’s in hands down.  I find it extremely ironic that she finds what she does and has that reaction considering what she’s doing.  I love this characterization and the fact that just over yonder is where Greene is and before she uncover all his secrets she’s drawn there too.

This is where we really get to see Guiu and Mauricio shine because that underwater battle between Greene and the aunt well it’s just incredible!  This is the kind of weird stuff we’ve really been waiting to see, not just human skins emptied by some creature it’s the full on balls to the wall fight that showcases just how unhuman they are.  Also I love the way the bring this to life it has that dark edginess to it that perfectly suits the tone, mood and feel we need for this kind of story.  The way it flows through the panels is marvelously done and it has all the elements that keep you glued to the page.

The ending kind of surprised me.  I do like that the two are forced to continue working together and now as beat cops, yet another demotion for Fayez.  This is a direct result of what happened on that boat and well let’s just say there are those higher up who have more knowledge of what’s out there and don’t want it to change.  The dialogue between the two however is what really got me and Fayez’s outburst well I lost a tad bit of respect for her for that.  Here I was thinking he was going to be honest with her and tell her the truth.

I like how this book plays out and that regardless of what role they are in they are cops and that instead of looking for trouble it has a way of finding them.  Sure Fayez was conscripted to spy on Greene to figure out how he was so good at what he does but now she’s caught up in all this and there’s no getting away from it.  The weird is now a part of her life and her wife/girlfriend isn’t going to be happy about that should it find it’s way home with her.

This is one of the most creatively unique and imaginative series on stands right now.

Action Man #3
IDW Publishing 2016
Written by John Barber
Illustrated by Paolo Villanelli
Coloured by John-Paul Bove
Lettered by Neil Uyetake

Ian Noble has had a whirlwind experience since Action Man was killed and now finds himself having to prove he’s up to the task of taking the mantle on himself.  With a traitor in the organization things are about to prove the most dangerous for Ian and his team.

I love that this book feels like a James Bond Jr. kind of approach with Ian being Action Man and having people around him helping him to fulfill his destiny.  Yes his boss Director Pauline Bestley isn’t his biggest fan but the way the story unfolds and the ongoing characterization by John shows us there’s hope for her to see his potential.  This has all the right elements when it comes to the action adventure spy genre that will make it a successful staple in the field.

I also like how the then and now tactic is being incorporated into the story.  As we’ve seen briefly to open each issue young Ian has broken into Action Man headquarters.  This issue is his first encounter with Action Man.  It’s the beginning of his story really and it paints a great picture in a small amount of space of a boy without friends who is looking for something in life.  Now we don’t know if he knew what this place was or if it was just curiosity that drove him to break in but regardless this is the moment his life changes forever.  It’s a great thing to see too and i’m impressed with how much John packed into this little amount of space.

The rest of the issue does a lot of great characterization as well.  Ian is still young and not used to being in the main role and his age shows through.  He’s nervous and unable to stay quiet during his undercover assignment.  Still once the adrenaline kicks in and his natural ability and instincts kick in he more than proves he’s capable of being Action Man.

We’ve also seen since issue one there’s a traitor among them.  This issue reveals who that is and then some.  I’ve got to say i’m more than a little surprised that this happens so early on in the run.  Unless this is a limited series, which I wholly hope it’s not, then that makes more sense.  Still it’s a great way of showcasing the agency’s importance and how much they are respected and feared by Doctor X.  It also gives us a look at what’s coming next, a restructuring of the organization and new blood.

That should be fun and interesting to see as well since it’ll be almost a ground up rebuilding and the potential there is unlimited.  It’s a great way to take something established and then get the reader even more involved as they get to experience a new hierarchy established.  For a new series to become an even newer series so quickly is something we don’t often see but I have to admit that it’s a great tactic to take and gets me even more excited to see where the book will go next.

The interiors here are strong and interesting.  I like the creativity we see in the foes that Ian has to fight.  The way the book flows through the panels is nicely done.  The use of backgrounds are nicely done though we could always have more.  The angles and perspectives that we see throughout the issue that get you involved in the action here.

This is a really exciting new series that doesn’t follow any rules and it’s one that will keep you entertained time and time again.
