The team discovered that convincing an Elite Blue to join their ranks was not the most pain-free method of bolstering their lineup. Yet, ultimately, they were able to convince Elia Fawn to journey to The Rig to speak with Admiral Maylander directly. Meanwhile, a new foe rose from below and left a trail of human bloodshed in his wake, enough to garner the attention of those aboard The Rig…

I do love the idea of a group of Blue’s working together as a team to take on threats both from their own kind and human made but it’s Admiral Maylander that keeps from being more gung ho about it all.  He doesn’t even try to hide his opinion of the Blue and his own inadequacy towards being merely human which has given him the “right” to wage war on another species living on this planet to prove his superiority.

I love that Vince is able to showcase how the Blue just like their land dwelling human counterparts have people who will gravitate towards what we refer to as good or bad it’s not indicative to a species to be one way or the other but the balance of both and how that is handled or reigned in is.  Maylander demonstrates the worst human emotions have to offer, fear and loathing at something different that challenges his dominant standing so it must be controlled or destroyed.

While no member of the team is able to go up against Maylander alone, sans Elia, by working together gaining each others trust and learning to be a team I’m hoping that this will be Maylander’s downfall.  If Elia has anything to say about it well watch how they interact with each other here and you’ll understand.

I have to say I like the interlude with Daken and Shalla.  Shalla may be the most opportunistic person you’ve ever met and will sell out anyone for a price but there’s also something honest about him not hiding that and when we saw him in Kiani’s last story arc I gained a certain amount of respect for him.  This segment of the story is just another prime example of how he’s a survivor and should never be underestimated and his role in this series well it’s more intriguing than ever now.

The team does manage to catch up to their suspect and it turns out Elia knows him rather well.  How they were able to determine where he was well that’s a nice bit of storytelling from Vince and it showcases why each one them was drafted into this team.  It also shows us why going after Eries was only fighting a symptom not the cause.

I’m actually very impressed with how the story here is progressing and how the team is coming together.  The characterization is fantastic and the spotlight on skills and interaction really do make this a very interesting take on the Fathom universe.

Claudio and company really do a very nice sharp job on the interiors here.  I love the look of the characters, the attention to detail is superbly done and Erick and Justice really make the colours pop when their powers are in use making this more dynamic to witness.  They manage to bring their world to life wonderfully and beautifully keeping the reader’s interest levels up.

Aspens new take on their signature world so far is a huge success for me and it’s even better that you can jump in here without having to have read everything that’s come before to understand and enjoy what’s happening.  Take a look at the series and see why Aspen has been a fan favorite for years!

Book of Death Legends of the Geomancer #2
Valiant Entertainment 2015
Written by Fred Van Lente
Illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp

For Millennia, a lineage of powerful mystics called the Geomancers have spoken to the Earth, and guided humanity.  Before any Geomancer existed, however, local shamans communed with nature and guided their tribes through everyday life.

Anni is shaman for the ruthless Nergal, the death-bringer.  But the forces of nature itself are killing Nergal’s people and strangling humankind in its cradle.  Mistaking her for the cause, the tribe sentences Anni to death… and Anni fights back!

Wow this really does lay the groundwork for not only the Geomancers but the Anni Padda clan as well.  I’m kind of hoping that War Monger would make a cameo as well since it seems her beginnings start this far back as well.  Still if what I see is what I think it is it would be the beginning of how the Geomancer is born.  There’s something inherently spectacular about seeing the birth of a civilization or the evolution of one already in place.  Last issue all hell broke loose when Nergal tried to kill Anni and this issue one becomes three.

We saw that Padda was falling for Anni and that she was going to be his salvation but there’s an unexpected event that occurs to bring a third member to the fold.  One that as the story unfolds and the trio talks you understand why what happened did.  For those specifics you really need to read the story though.  Suffice it to say this is Fred and you know it’s gonna darn good, involved and unpredictable.

For me that Valiant has gotten Juan Jose Ryp to do the interiors here is a major coup!  His work is so incredible, the detail, emotion and sheer feel of he gives us on the page is beyond what anyone else seems to be able to do.  His style is unmistakable and his attention to detail is crazy in it’s scope and execution making what he brings the page so darn interesting to behold.

Anni, Paddi and now Cuth take their journey onward as they follow the path Anni has been shown to a tree inside a cave with fruit hanging from it.  Almost a very interesting version of the infamous Garden where another tree was possessed of forbidden fruit.  The similarities are nice and yet different enough to be a unique take.  Again Fred takes us not only on this journey but puts forth dialogue and conversation between the three that makes you think a lot more about things then you’re probably prepared for.  It’s interesting to see the viewpoints and how the individuals see the work of God’s playing a part in their world.

So what happens when they reach the tree screams for attention which I’m sure we’ll get next issue as Anni’s journey and the birth of the first Geomancer comes to life, yes ASSuming isn’t the wisest thing to do but logically it seems to be heading in that direction.  While that happens Padda and Cuth must protect her from what we see on the final page.  Truly this team is creating the birth of the Valiant Universe and doing it in a way that weaves a few of the prominent ones together and strengthens the bond they have whether in the present they know the connection or not.  Plus Fred is giving us this world where we WANT to revisit again a time where change is happening and great things are coming and hardships need to be overcome what’s better than that?

Jordie takes us on a colouring tutorial for a few pages here and you finally get to see what goes into a colourist bringing a story to life.  It should give you a new respect for what they do and what they are capable of and how important their work is to the finished product.  Also as you see the penciled/inked pages along with coloured one it really is remarkable.  This is why I always credit the colourist in my reviews.

Van Helsing vs. Dracula #1 (of 5)
Zenescope Entertainment 2015
Written by Pat Shand
Illustrated by Michele Bandini

Last year, Liesel Van Helsing was attacked by an evil from her father’s past… but she survived, and has moved on with her life. Besides becoming the name that vampires fear, she’s also found love… in the strangest place. However, when old friends come calling on her for help, Van Helsing find herself pulled into a final conflict with the deadliest vampire of all time!

This is a great issue there’s a nice amount of fun mixed in with some more seriousness and potentially dangerous moments.  I’ll be honest most of what I know of Liesel comes from her guest appearances in Robyn Hood so learning more about her past here and that she worked with Jonathan which is how he met Mina and the opening sequences around Jonathan’s parents table well it is a great way to start things off, hit the reader with a whole what the heck moment and to get you involved in the story.

Then seeing Liesel in action the fun continues.  There’s a part of me that loves her outfit and a part of me that wonders why she doesn’t have at least shorts I mean she’s got a fantastic coat over her bustier top making the look sleek and sexy without it being crass but the panties well that makes me wonder.  Back to the action, the way Pat manages to infuse her personality into what’s happening around her.  This old lady vampire for example claims to be nemesis and yet she has no idea who she is and this the fourth time she’s taken out her nest well it’s this kind of characterization that endears Van Helsing to the reader.

It is nice to see her with Hades after all that’s happened in the Zenescope universe that they really do care about one another.   That they make an unusual pairing is putting it mildly but still this kind of thing just adds to the interest level for me.  Though right off the bat we see that Hades has a secret that he doesn’t want to share with Liesel.  Could this doom their new relationship already before it’s had time to really get going?

Jonathan has called Liesel for help for Mina and as she and Hades go to them we get a quick recap of their working relationship.  This includes Dracula having turned her father into a vampire whom she had to kill.  Ah poor Mina she’s tied to a bed covered in spiders and flies and spouting that she has somewhere to be.  What I find interesting here is that it’s Hades who has the most plausible idea of just letting her go and following her this way they can aptly rescue her from whomever it is that has taken control of her.

This issue was just the set up for the real story here and it’s been excellently.  We get a clear sense that Dracula is up to no good and is using Mina to get to Liesel and in my opinion in the hopes of messing with her head to keep her off guard by once again making the upcoming meeting personal again.

This is the kind of anticipation in a story that makes it great to watch unfold.  That Pat’s managed to get me involved and think of reasons for things that are happening shows us his skills as a writer.  Plus I mean let’s face it we’re talking about Van Helsing and Dracula again and who doesn’t get caught up in this kind of vampire story?

There are moments the interior artwork is brilliantly done, mainly when we see Dracula or the possessed Mina heck even Hades has that meeting where the artwork really stands out and showcases some great darkness to it.  The rest is good a little too generic at moments but never out of proportion but missing that certain edge needed for this kind of story.  Granted the softness of Liesel out of her kit is a nice contrast but I just wish it were more.  Also Jonathan’s family that opens it up while it just seemed to plain to me.

Overall this really is a great issue it has depth, emotion and foreboding darkness and creates a scenario that will test Liesel to her fullest.  This kind of strength in the story is what i’ve come to expect out of Zenescope lately.

Still one of the best finds i’ve experienced in a very long time, we’re talking decades.  The originality of this story and the creativity in bringing it to life time after time captures my imagination and continues to thrill with each outing.  Just the sheer fact that Lewis and Clark are traversing the great expanse of the American continent where they encounter creatures that would normally only exist inside of your nightmares make this the kind of alternate history story as unique as they come.

So last issue we met Dawhogg a Fezron, basically a race of huge blue talking birds and this issue we meet their chieftain who seems to be wearing American Indian style garb basting the scout in some form of butter preparing him for a the main course of a feast.  While this isn’t the first time they are facing the death of one of their own it’s definitely the first time that they’ve come across an intelligent species.  The Ferzon speak and have nice language skills and their own sense of honour and tradition so what happens here is fascinating really.

So does Dawhogg have a place in their society worthy enough to exchange prisoners well you’ll have to read the story to find out.  Let’s just say that thanks to Captain Meriwether Lewis and his quick thinking and talking it would appear that if a deal is completed the two species could form something of an alliance that each benefits from.  Chris’ characterization and dialogue is really just incredibly strong the story advancement, plot twists and turns are expertly done and the whole way through the issue you just marvel at the events that unfold before you.

Sacagawea is having her own troubles while the boys are away.  She’s burning up with fever and least we forget she’s pregnant so it’s really kind of a critical time for her right now.  She’s still this headstrong woman who wants to do her own thing though and that stubborn streak doesn’t make ministering to her any easier.  Getting a look into her past and what her grandfather has tasked her with and the coming of the white man and what that is supposed to bring.  Finally seeing something of the sacrifice she’s had to endure goes a long way in defining her as a person and it’s about time we got more of that!

Could Sacagawea’s grandfather's vision quest resulted in exactly what’s transpiring right now?  It would certainly seem that way and where do the Ferzon come from and how did they get here?  With this species living in North America what does that mean for the expansion of a nation?  So many fantastic questions intended to make the reader think in ways that are surprising and almost as much so as the questions that will inevitably come.  This is the kind of world you WANT to visit and Chris has made fascinating, beautiful and deadly in so many ways that it remains that place you want to be month and month out.

Matthew lays the groundwork on the interiors and then Stefano and Tony take it to where Owen can masterfully apply the colouring to really bring imagination to life.  The Fezron for instance seem cute and nice, like muppets, but having seen what they can do they are a deadly addition to vast expanse of the unknown.  The human characters, the uniforms or clothing have that wild west look and feel to it that firmly roots it in the era it’s meant to take place.  There’s so much emotion, mood setting and this vibrant life to the work they bring that it really takes this book that upper echelon level of greatness.

I’m all for a tale dealing with reincarnation so when I saw that’s what this was about I was pretty excited for it but that alone didn’t prepare me for what we were going to get here.  This is engaging, interesting and deals with almost a conspiracy theory reincarnation of not just two specific people but a whole society of them with different caste systems.  The opening of the book and this story is done so well by everyone that it took me by surprise in it’s intensity and interest level.

There’s this kind of recap of previous lives as we see two people battle each other time and time again seemingly from the dawn of mankind.  The second and third pages do this masterful job of just illustrating battles in different era’s beautifully and even though violent and slightly bloody it’s got this power behind from Jonathan and Carlos that has an almost hypnotic effect.

When we get to know and learn about twenty six year old Mazie Lirah who now goes by Mali it’s through her narration that we get a sense of who she is, how she grew up and where she’s at in life.  All of this paints a interesting picture of this woman who I see as damaged, lost and adrift in the world with no purpose or sense of direction and desperately seeking something to happen with her life.  Her daydreams of her past lives emerging don’t help her situation any and do cause her and her boyfriend to break up but that seems like it’s definitely a good thing to have happened anyway.

She does have a wicked sense of humor though and with her step-father having been an infamous figure, the Omaha Ripper, she needs that to balance out the fact that he was a loving father to her alongside this more gruesome persona.  I’m so impressed with what Christopher is bringing to the table in his characterization here.  She’s a fantastic character who doesn’t understand what she’s going through and has had so much to deal with already that these episodes of reliving the past seem more like hallucinations rather than reality only furthering to frustrate and alienate her from those around her.

Miss Vos on the other hand is Mali’s ying to her yang.  They are opposite sides of the same coin always at odds with each always killing each other time and again throughout history but why?  It’s been so long what are they really killing each other for anymore and why keep this ridiculous and vicious cycle constantly moving without it going anywhere?  Vos though has full knowledge of who she is and was and her role in things and she’s looking for Mali to keep the ritual going.  Again Christopher’s characterization is something so darn good you really need to pick this up and see what the man is capable of doing.

I love how this issue ends too with Mali being attacked and awakened through the encounter while Vos is killing a man for the information of who she is.  Plus the last page oh yeah that’s some trippy stuff.  But I got to tell ya this is why we love comics, creator owned especially because they have this passion and dedication to bringing this to life so that the reader sits up takes notice and spreads the word that his is a project you need to get.

Fantastic premise, strong writing, characterization, plot development and advancement alongside some truly inspired interior artwork combine to bring this story to life in the most pleasantly unexpected way.  Seriously the artwork is nice people, the attention to detail the colours the emotions and verve that come from the pages just enhance the reading experience.

Wolf #2
Image Comics 2015
Written by Ales Kot
Illustrated by Matt Taylor
Coloured by Lee Loughridge

Antoine Wolfe, a hardboiled paranormal detective with a death wish, has to cope with sudden responsibility for an orphaned teenage girl who might be the key to the impending apocalypse, California-style. Also featured: a bag full of cash, a serial killer on the loose, and many secrets.

Okay Ales I love you seriously the way this issue opens and kind of ends with the Scheettish Vheempir yeah okay that was just a stroke of sheer brilliance.  Just the fact that he thought of that and it made it into the issue sealed this book’s fate for me as one of the most offbeat and brilliant pieces of storytelling around.

Then we get back to Wolf with his unexpected young visitor.  A thirteen year old girl who may be the antichrist whose grandmother, a ghost, has led her to Wolf and wants her to avoid the police since she doesn’t know which ones to trust and doesn’t seem intent on leaving anytime soon and isn’t quite mourning the loss of her parents.  Actually when questioned about that she makes a lot of sense and comes across much wiser than her years would suggest.

I love the way their conversation is scripted and that she doesn’t flinch or bat an eyelash at learning that the world is filled with Vampires, Werewolves and the like.  Regardless of how much he tries to persuade her how dangerous his life and being in it is she doesn’t care it’s I’m here I need your help and that’s that.  There’s something incredibly endearing about it really and it just adds this certain something to the mix that while he’s unprepared to deal with you can see he has grudging respect for.

Oh the Santa Ana Winds and what they really are and that she can see them just as clearly as he can yeah that’s a pretty amazing moment.  Not just from Ales either because Matt and Lee do some wonderful imagery with for us as well.  The colours and the outlines the whole thing is really kind spooky and beautiful.

One subject is brought up twice this issue and honestly Im surprised and laughing about it since it’s not something usually brought up a lot in comics and that we don’t see him squirm from it.  People I am such a huge fan of Ales writing because honestly you never know how his mind is going to work or where he’s going to take something or how nonchalantly it’s going to be presented and that’s such a huge draw.

There’s this intelligent simplicity to the way he writes that engages the reader.  Case in point is the inner dialogue Wolfe brings us as he tries to figure out everything that’s happening in his life and connect the dots as it were.  I like how he thinks and how he tries to unravel the puzzle around him it keeps the reader engaged and interested not to mention shows a nice way of thinking that perhaps you wouldn’t have thought of.

The end of the issue spotlights something coming and again the way one character talks is just something that will stand out.

This isn’t your normal supernatural detective style story.  There’s a panache to this that really helps it stand out and make it a must read book.

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #217
IDW Publishing 2015
Written by Larry Hama

After an unsuccessful attack from Cobra’s Night Creeper units, Sean Collins—the new Snake Eyes—infiltrates Cobra Commander’s inner sanctum and sends a very direct message… while in Seattle, Fred 172 agrees to meet with Fred 191. At the Pit, Duke orders the underground hidden base to be sealed and classified until further notice. Meanwhile, Hawk assembles a coalition of international military specialists to start looking into Revanche and Cobra’s business dealings.

It’s been awhile since I’ve visited this series.  Larry knows these characters inside and out and he’s been able to keep this remarkably fresh and interesting for such a very long time and now our classic G.I. Joe characters are finding themselves in a new event Cobra: Rising.  We’ve seen allegiances change with Storm Shadow leaving Cobra and joining the Joe’s and most recently the death of Snake Eyes and a young man paying homage and taking up his role, Sean, so it’s time for something big and new to happen to keep shaking things up.

G.I. Joe always seems to work better when you have these large sweeping arcs with major changes or developments that can set them on a new path or direction kind of renewing their resolve and purpose.  I love the fluidity of these characters because no one is ever really what they appear to be on the surface and for a perfect example of that is the conversation between Storm Shadow and Zartan.

Ah the Fred saga deepens and honestly I kind of like the idea of these guys all being kind of cut from the same cloth as it were it makes for controlling your ground troops easier and that they all seem to be Crimson Guard makes sense.  After all with the same name and same face with the same job you have this “unlimited” supply of men to do the job without worrying about training and names.  Though as we learn here what happens when they are being systematically eliminated by other Cobra against well I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I love seeing Psyche-Out and Duke talking about Cobra and what’s going on with them during what seems to be a full blown encounter only to discover it’s really a simulation.  We’ve seen them have these talks in the field before so honestly I thought it was legit and what Psyche-Out brings up to Duke’s questioning yeah it makes sense from what we’ve seen thus far and the whole Cobra: Rising story arc.

Cobra is in a reconstruction phase and it’s interesting because no one seems to know where the usual suspects fit into the new regime or if they do at all.  Destro and Baroness seem to be on the outs along with Zartan and with Cobra’s current affiliation with Revanche well it just makes the Joe’s harder to figure out and intel even harder to come by.  So many questions so little answers make for gripping and interesting reading.

With the classic cartoon sensibilities and a more modern take to storytelling the Joe’s are as fresh, fun and interesting today as they were when they first hit airwaves.

Doctor Who Four Doctors #2
Titan Comics 2015
Written by Paul Cornell
Illustrated by Neil Edwards
Coloured by Ivan Nunes

Clara came across a mysterious ‘Time Shelter’ containing a photo of the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors together – a meeting that would supposedly lead to the end of all things! Wanting to prevent this, Clara took the TARDIS to Paris, 1923, to a time when all three Doctors and their companions would be in the same city – and the same café. Warning Gabby and Alice, Clara tried to stop the Doctors meeting... but failed! After some argument, the Tenth and Twelfth Doctors touched - sparking the Blinovitch Limitation Effect, a flash of temporal energy. That’s when the Reapers, antibodies of time paradoxes, attacked!

Oh after last issue’s spectacular start the roller coaster ride has begun in earnest here.  With the appearance of the Reapers all three Doctors have a different first response and their companions leap into what their Doctor suggests it’s great to see how the dynamic between Doctor and Companion works.  Still the dialogue between the three is perfect and really demonstrates how each Doctor’s personality changes when he does.  Though they do seem to all have at least on thing in common and that’s that they think best on the run.

Neil and Ivan working on this book I mean really could the interiors get any freakin better than this?   Seriously they’ve actually made this art the kind you hang in your house quality in the attention to detail in clothes, faces and backgrounds.

Alright so with the Reaper’s here the Tardis isn’t quite the same and seeing how the trio wake her up well it’s fun and different and honestly I still can’t get over the dialogue.  It’s pretty much a good thing they don’t get together annually or that there aren’t any other Time Lords running around since I don’t think they can handle being around someone who is as smart as they are without turning it into some kind of competition.  Though to be honest part of the appeal here is seeing each incarnation of the Doctor trying to prove he’s the smartest of the three.

Any time we see the Tardis as a character in it’s own right always brings a smile to my face and now that all three versions are together and we see them all traverse all three versions, it’s more interesting to see how the inside changes for each Doctor and their preferences as well as seeing being used the way they do.  Also we never really get to see the interior rooms as much though they are alluded to so honestly this is great to see here.

It’s nice to see Clara finally show the picture to the three Doctors so they can start thinking about why it’s the three of them involved in all this, though why the Ninth Doctor isn’t saddens me.  So with all three Tardis’ separated the three teams head for Marinus the planet we saw when last issue opened.  But why is the real question here who made sure that Clara found that photograph and ensured that the Doctors and their companions would be in the right place at the right time in order for this momentous and disastrous event to occur.

Paul’s managed to weave in all the action that we love in a Doctor Who story along with some of the most interesting characterization we wouldn’t be able to get any other way for us in this adventure.  With some of the industry’s most interesting and incredible artwork bringing it all to life this is the Comic Event of the year!

I’ve been awaiting this series since I first heard of it.  What we get is a very big first issue nearly eighty pages in length that really does allow the reader to get a chance to meet the characters involved in the series.  What Matt is able to do with a larger introduction is not necessarily get the party started but delve into characters more instead.

We open with hell of a start too.  With a father shot through the head to stealing the infant daughter so seeing her fifteen years later in a coffee shoppe targeting a man and then blowing the place up to take him out.  So it begs the question was she kidnapped and raised to sacrifice herself for an as yet unnamed cause?  Is there a network out there that kidnaps children and teaches them to fight, build bombs, speak foreign languages all for the purpose of using them as foot soldiers, expendable pawns so that they “make the world a better place?”

Then we’re off to what seems to be an elite prep school where a rather smart young woman Sera whose world we watch come crumbling down around her in a rather spectacular fashion.  As a reader you can see what she goes through at school is clearly a setup and you get the impression she’s a victim whose being manipulated into something though we don’t know what.  The response from the school and police however seems harsher than I would have expected as she’s clearly a top student.  Granted we don’t know much about her life at that school or if she’s popular but still something seems off about the whole thing and this just makes you want to learn more about her, her life and what this is all about.

We are introduced to Christopher Johanssen who comes across as something of a raving madman full of conspiracy theory nut that the mainstream seems have tried to suppress and discredit but in his rantings he has the seeds of truth.  It’s interesting to see and think that in this world full of social media and internet access that someone like him can exist and people don’t pay more attention to him after the powers that be have successfully labeled him a “nutter.”

Next we meet a young man called Cesar as he is hitching his way around the country and his story is being told.  It’s pretty straight forward his parents come to America and got sent him and smuggled him back into the country alone.  Something of an animal rights activist even at this young age he’s been receiving notes from someone all too aware of what he’s up to.  What he has to do to earn a few bucks well yeah that’s interesting too and while part of me wishes we’d seen it happen what he buys well that says it all.  His struggle at the truck stop, showers, gas the whole thing well it’s kind of well yeah uhm something I would’ve done had been able to at the time lol but seriously it’s kind of messed up.

As his story unfolds again what he does and how he does and how he’s treated it’s as if he’s being set up to become a young terrorist while all he wants to do is survive.  Oh and how he gets out of this well that’s something to see.  To be honest he’s naked a lot throughout this and we see one of the truckers naked and i’m a little surprised and disappointed that we don’t see any full frontal if it were a girl we’d probably see it all by now and I look forward to a time when that double standard goes away.

So then the story takes this kind of surreal underground fight club route that’s highly sexually charged.  I mean it’s erotic and powerful and slightly arousing and there are no boundaries who who’s doing what with or next to whom.

The last part of the story brings Sera and Cesar together.  It is one heck of an interesting conversation to be sure but I just get the feeling that Sera isn’t being as honest with her intentions with him though her assessment of where they are and how they survive well that’s pretty spectacular and incredibly well conceived.  I like the idea behind where Sera lives and how it’s organized and how it came into being it’s something you wouldn’t think of immediately but can see the brilliance of it and how it could actually happen.

There’s something about the disenfranchised that sparks so much interest for the general public.  Many can sympathize, empathize and see the struggle though fear the opposite side for the power they wield and the secret threats they make which we all know about.  Who is right who is wrong and is there a medium balance where people can work together, which as long as both sides continue to wage their own secret wars that isn’t likely to happen.

Amancay and Jean-Paul’s work on the interiors is fantastic.  There’s emotion, drama, expression and if you closely some great easter eggs throughout that really kind take you by surprise.  My only real question is how Cesar’s mohawk goes from white to red (orange) on page 74 otherwise the attention to detail is stunning, the page and panel layouts are great and you really get a heavy emotional impact from what we see on the page.

This is interesting, different and highly addictive as it leaves you with so many questions that you want answered, ensuring your return, and delivering something that when it’s over you don’t even realize it’s that large of an issue and automatically you are craving more story.

Say it isn’t so!  Riverdale’s ideal couple, Archie & Betty… Split??  After the infamous “lipstick incident” (don’t ask), their breakup was all anyone at Riverdale High seemed to talk about!  Following a failed attempt to bring them back together (thanks, Jughead!), it looks like everyone is FINALLY ready to accept some change in their small town…

I have to admire after reading this issue that everything i’ve known about the characters is still fundamentally here.  Archie is a cutie, he’s clumsy and while your all american boy he isn’t the smartest or fastest kid in town he’s just him.  It’s like that reassuring blanket or pillow you sleep better with knowing he’s still Archie and yet there’s a whole life he’s leading to discover at the same time.

Jughead gets a nice spotlight too as he and Archie are walking and talking and Archie is complaining he has no money.   We get a great background on Jughead, Forsythe P. Jones III.  His family was once the richest in Riverdale and he kind of rivaled what we think of Veronica in excess till his father made a bad investment and the family became broke.  Forever changing Jugheads outlook on life.

This leads us directly into the unlucky life of Archie Andrews and some of the jobs he’s had.  His desire to work so he can fix his car since he lost his best mechanic when he and Betty broke up.  It’s a perfect segway into what’s happening with Betty.  Tomboy through and through more at home fixing cars and playing video games than dealing with boys and trying to look girly but her friends have other ideas for her birthday party.

I love what Mark is doing here the characterization is phenomenal!  In very short bursts we get plenty of characterization and understanding of the gang and how they feel about their friends.  He manages to combine old school Archie sensibilities into his storytelling like breaking the fourth wall and having Archie talk to the reader while integrating modern technology like camera phones into the mix.

We’ve always known that Mr. Lodge has disliked Archie that’s been a staple of his life that Veronica likes him the way she does and his disdain for the boy.  This issue actually has their first meeting, officially unofficial if you will as Archie is cleaning up his mess from earlier that day at the Lodge Manor worksite when Mr. Lodge and Veronica come to take a look.  One giant mishap which pretty much sums up Archie’s life sets the stage for their relationship moving forward and perfectly demonstrates a reason why Mr. Lodge dislikes Archie so.

Fiona’s work on the interiors have done what very few have been able to do and that’s take such a realistic approach to the characters and giving them a modern look and sensibility to them.  We’ve seen attempts of this in the past but it’s always done by a change of hair or clothes here she really gets into the new essence of the characters making them familiar and yet distinctly new at the same time.

This is a highly entertaining and well done look at making the Archie’s fresh and new again while still keeping the original sensibility of the series.
