Grimm Fairy Tales the Little Mermaid #5 (of 5)

Zenescope Entertainment 2015

Written by Meredith Finch

Illustrated by Miguel Mendonca

Atlantis goes to war to reclaim the king’s heir. Little does he know, Erica has an escape plan of her own. This is one princess that does not need saving! But will Erica choose her freedom or accept the burden of rule now that she finally has a choice?

Oh wow this was one heck of an ending for this story as well as perfectly setting up for the next arc.  Meredith really went ahead and takes it to the reader with all that happens here and keeping with most fairy tales there isn’t exactly a happy ending.  I will say however that this is what I love about Zenescope lately it’s high powered storytelling with incredibly detailed powerful interior artwork.  It also has that element of horror to it that is the company’s bread and butter making this a true standout.

Unaware that her father and his forces are making a full assault on the compound she’s in Erica makes good on her escape during all the confusion.   The look about her when she’s in the water goes to show that this is as farther from a Disney Princess as you can possibly get and one that more falls in line with fearsome creature of the sea,  Though her escape is somewhat halted by a mysterious voice that reminds her while she may be free if she doesn’t go back to deal with them they will continue to hunt her relentlessly.

Because of the experiments done on Erica they have an army of human hybrids all their own to stem the invasion by the Atlanteans.   Since they are surprisingly outnumbered the King decides to fall back as the face overwhelming odds.  Though of course the mad doctor is not going to be content with that since he’s seen his Trident in action and wants to possess that now.  This guy really is a rare breed of villain willing to commit genocide against the Atlanteans all to further his own dark ambitions making him terrifyingly fascinating.

Erica’s entrance into the fray changes everything however and her reunion with her father is short lived.  Suddenly she knows she isn’t the only one and has found her biological father in the midst of a battle for survival.  After he takes a bullet and dies for his daughter Erica goes ballistic showing us all what she’s truly capable of.  Her powers and abilities far outpass those of her people and as she leads them to victory against the Doctor and his monsters she’s declared by those present as the New Queen of Atlantis.

While Erica is reunited with her mother and made Queen of a people she never knew existed this is far from the end.  Don’t forget the Sea Witch is still out there and her role in Erica’s birth, kidnapping and her deal with Issoro are all still on the table so that we can revisit the kingdom under the sea again.  Plus i’d love the opportunity to see how she handles her new role in life and the responsibilities of ruling a kingdom.

This was a great adaptation and the twists, turns and gender swapping really worked for this story.  It’s nice to see Zenescope embrace the future with series like this, mature, smart and beautifully rendered without being cheesy it really makes an impact on readers.

Herald: Lovecraft & Tesla #4

Action Lab Entertainment 2015

Written by John Reilly

Penciled by Tom Rogers

Inked, Coloured & Lettered by Dexter Weeks

This issue opens up with Amelia Earhart having gone missing over the Atlantic.  This immediately goes to Tesla seeing his outgoing bills and Lovecraft’s enjoyment at selling one of four stories to Weird Tales.  One is a start for Lovecraft and it means his time with Tesla is being well spent, that and the fact that they’ve become friends of a sort doesn’t hurt matters either.  Still with the bills piling up what’s Tesla going to do?

As it turns out before they can continue to search for the Necronomicon they must attend Mr. Mark Twain’s retirement party in Connecticut.  Oh there’s a moment that Tesla realizes on those flying crab things is back but nowadays it’s another of Lovecraft’s mother’s pets.  Before they leave however Harry shows up seeking help and offering no new information and of course Susan offers to keep him company while the boys are off doing their thing.

Now if you’ve ever wondered what really happened to Amelia well then look no further as she’s found her way to what appears to be another dimension.  Running from monstrous monsters and seemingly being somewhere even those in the Looking Glass would scared of she’s seems to be handling it rather well.  Where she is the creatures that inhabit it are maddening to say the least and yet to the reader they are entertaining nicely done by John writing this so we get a distinct look at both  views here.  Also the work by Tom and Dexter in this segment is bright, odd and full of imagination on acid complete with those swirling colours.

One of the things I am really enjoying about this series is the banter and dialogue between Lovecraft and Tesla and seeing just how fundamentally different they are in their desire and how they go about things.  The best example is when the two are at Cuttle’s crypt and what transpires outside and within.  While this may not be in the Danger Zone line of books it certainly has the appeal for those of all ages.

Menlo Park and we learn that a Mr. Albert Einstein is in line to replace Tesla seems to have a solution to their current problem.  This isn’t exactly what Tom wishes to hear and his demeanor isn’t that friendly but it does add another aspect to what’s already in play in this world.  The mystery of how it all interconnects remains to be seen but the interest factor has definitely been raised.

At Mr. Twain’s retirement party there are a number of things that occur that make the boys seem to make them magnets for the bizarre and unexpected.  It really is kind of fun to watch as you learn more about Tesla’s role in the people there’s plans and Lovecraft’s inability to keep his mouth shut when something bothers him proving that he his manners remain uncouth and should be revisited since he is a guest in someone else’s home.

This is the kind of book you don’t expect to find but are thrilled when you do.  It’s smartly written, highly entertaining and extremely well illustrated.  The interiors while having a very cartoon quality to it really does aptly convey the world they all inhabit and the mood and emotion we need to experience from each character.  History’s most interesting people who shouldn’t have connections do and they make for the most interesting of bedfellows.

This is one of those touchy subject matter books that’s wrapped up in some excellent modern technology and full of action/adventure and intrigue that makes it not only socially relevant but also ripped from headlines at it’s core.  This is a smartly written edgy look at what happens behind the scenes of those mega-churches and the two opposing forces that while may have the same end goal are going about it in very different ways.

The relationship that is going on between James Howard of the FBI and Sam leader of the Samaritan’s has so much potential, there’s this drama to it and that desire on James part to prove that this unknown is not a better hacker than he is, see injured pride, is something we see play out beautifully.  Plus adding to all this is the fact that James while fundamentally believes in what Sam is doing he’s working for the government to shut her down and it’s that personal involvement level that’s almost clouding judgments.

What Samaritan is doing with social media and swaying public opinion on those that they see as hypocritical and damaging by doing things that are incredibly illegal the Bureau can’t fight things on that level making what they can do much more limited.  Yes the Bureau would like to take these false prophets down within the legal system and not by using technology and equipment that can be considered intrusive and unethical really does hamper what they can do and how quickly they can do.  Instead of pooling resources they are at odds and it’s this kind of writing and angle that makes these two opposing forces such compelling reading.

Rashan and Mike’s work on the interiors really has this way of hammering home just how both sides feel at any given moment.  The facial expressions alone are wonderfully done and the mood, tone and setting we get from page to page just enhances the reading experience.  Page seven has a great example of the impact they have with that Sorry game they find in a casket and just that really bright pop of colour on a page with otherwise muted tones really makes a strong statement.  Also seeing Rachel and Mike in the motel room is just another instance of what they do to keep this story as powerful visually as the words themselves are.

On a side note it’s too bad that Mike had that sheet where it was on his otherwise very enticing body.

It was only a matter of time before this rivalry between to very high emotionally strung sides escalated to the point of no return.  It happens this issue in a spectacular way that just cannot be imagined.  With what we see this issue as the action unfolds is both smart and scary all at the same time.  It’s such a interesting story and you can’t help but get lost in the Mission Impossible feel to while they take justice on those who they see as men of god who feel they are above the law and moral judgment by others.  It’s a slippery slope but not preachy and yes there are plenty of sources to quote for mega-churches being too solvent and their ministers being too wealthy as a result but it’s a damn good story.

Matt has gone and taken something inherently personal, religion, how it’s seen and how those who oppose the hypocrisy involved and made it the kind of read you’ll never forget.

I am absolutely adoring this series.  No it isn’t like the cartoon was and that’s okay it’s an interpretation of that by these incredibly talented ladies and one that fuses modern day sensibilities and things that are currently happening with girls in the world and putting a positive spin on that.  Sure the Misfit’s are their rivals and Pizzazz is well a bitch but that’s normal you have that in life and in an industry where someone feels threatened by an up and comer that you feel has more talent than you do.  The Romeo & Juliet romance between Kimber and Stormer well that’s just another modern twist on things showcasing that you can be who you are and still thrive.

I’m loving Sophie’s work on the interiors too.  That each girl has a different body type and aren’t ashamed of that and then seeing Kimber’s hair this issue like that is pretty amazing.  Plus the creativity involved in creating their stage looks and hairdo’s not to mention the vibrant colours involved in  both it’s so visual and that is important when dealing with these characters.  Then seeing the emotions and feelings come off the characters mainly through facial expressions is some really strong stuff.

I like that both groups seem to have a parallel thing happening at the same time.  While the Misfits are going on a talk show Jem and the Holograms are setting up for the benefit they are performing at and both bands are short one member.  Of course Stormer is trying to stop whatever is starting with Kimber thanks to pressure from the others Kimber’s not having it and is going to fight for something that could be so right.  Maybe it won’t work out ya never know but not trying that’s even worse.  Still seeing how each group deals with the same thing happening says a lot about the type of people they are.

Rio shows up and it’s cute ya know the whole I like him he likes her but there’s the hologram secret still.  Jerrica is so shy and it’s kind of adorable and Rio’s desire to be there and be supportive it’s endearing.

If we are going to get that page each issue where they sing and we get a glimpse at the lyrics and the energy they give off then we really need to find a way to use some sort of Shazam app or another app to hear the songs made real because that would be innovative and just plain incredible.  Oh and part of me really does like that the Misfits have to send in one of their roadies, Clash and Blaze, to do their dirty work and try to sabotage Jem’s show.

I think the writing, characterization and the way Kelly and Sophie have decided to introduce us to the girls.  It’s been a nice process of establishing personalities and their relationships with one another and how Jem came into being and it’s still unfolding before our eyes.  Just like real life things don’t happen within one issue it takes time and never really ends it just keeps going.

This is a strong series that says a lot to many people about acceptance, being whomever you want to be and to embrace your life with both hands.

Fight Club 2 #2

Dark Horse Comics 2015

Written by Chuck Palahniuk

Illustrated by Cameron Stewart

Coloured by Dave Stewart

I have to say that this book with only issue two is without a doubt already better than the movie that spawned it.  Chuck’s able to really get into some incredible characterization and express their feelings in such ways that make this the most exciting new series of the year.  The tension is palpable and the story while moving along at such a lightning pace is superbly crafted and really just grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let you go.

Cameron and Dave’s work on the interiors is just as powerful in conveying Chuck’s words.  The kids in the support group have that poor aged look that kids with that disease have and then Sebastian's humble personage borders on the pathetic and when he transitions to Tyler he’s just so strong, confident and dynamic and the boys are able to showcase and more with what they put on the page.

Chuck’s writing this issue as both husband and wife tell the tale of their son and what’s happened to him and with the house being simultaneously played out page by page was such a great way to demonstrate how they both feel and the fact that they can’t seem to do this with each other.   Though let’s face it Sebastian’s shrink has ulterior motives as well with his hypnosis sessions that bring Tyler out to play for a bit each time and then of course she’s been cutting his meds to have her affair and excitement with Tyler too each of them creating that wall which separates the two of them to crumble more and more.

With the Fire Marshall, F.B.I. and the insurance people each evaluating what’s happened we get a bigger and clearer image of what’s been happening with their son, who is no longer considered dead but now kidnapped as the body of a second year med student has been discovered to have been killed and placed in the house to cover the kidnappers tracks.   Even more interesting however is who the real kidnapper is.  Also as the story continues and the investigation went on we learn more about Sebastian’s home life and his parents and quite possibly the first time Tyler came into his life.  All of this makes for that grippingly solid reading that seems to explain so much and yet leaves you with more questions.

It shouldn’t be surprising at how strong the writing is but it does come across that way because you never know how well a person take the movie they wrote and then translate it to this medium.  Chuck however has some serious writing chops behind him and seems have had a solid plan coming into this to tell this tale.  There’s really some serious characterization happening and everyone but Sebastian seems to have ulterior motives and while he slowly begins to realize that Tyler’s been released more often these days he knows what he has to do to gain control of the situation.

This is a powerful and strong book that is pure enjoyment to read.

Rasputin #6

Image Comics 2014

Written by Alex Grecian

Illustrated by Riley Rossmo

Coloured by Ivan Plascencia

I’m such a huge fan of this series and while it seems logical to take this to where it’s gone I still miss seeing him back in the past even if that’s just what Alex imagined the Mad Monk was like and how he was used.  There’s something majestic and beautiful about that era and those living in it.  Still the thought that somehow Rasputin has moved forward in time either having lived his life entirely in secret or not doesn’t matter.  Seeing how a man of his sensibilities makes his way among our modern society should prove to be something extraordinary to see.

As we open with Harrison running for President as she’s making a speech and quite well demonstrated in an assassin’s crosshairs and Rasputin is in the limousine hearing screams what he’s doing here with her is somewhat revealed.  Once again Rasputin’s skills at bringing the dead back to life or healing them before their truly are dead comes into play.  In this day and age however this kind of act will not go unnoticed what with cellphone cameras and all.  There’s one woman who smells a story in this and her part in this little drama is just starting.

As we head back to the past at the camp where Rasputin tried to heal as many of the wounded soldiers as he could the interior artwork takes on that clouded past feel of an old movie.  I think Riley’s interior work here keeps getting better and better with each issue, as if this experience has taken his work to a new level.  He’s always been talented but now it just feels likes he’s been able to elevate it to some new place and he deserves accolades and praise for what he’s able to bring to the page.

What happens with the little ghost boy after Rasputin falls to the ground after healing so many is remarkable.  The fates have seemingly decreed that this isn’t his time nor how it is the end of his story.  The whole thing here is just something I wasn’t prepared for and the way that Alex depicts it in his writing is superb.  This adds a  whole new level of characterization to Rasputin that we hadn’t seen before but will this be a positive or a negative?  Will he change how and whom he decides to heal again remains unknown but perhaps this instance was that moment in his life that made him hide away from the rest of the world.

I like how this issue ended.  Shanae Tolliver has made her grand entrance and Rasputin isn’t alone in his apartment.   Who the mysterious person with him I can’t wait to see and hopefully there will be a massive twist in that but even if not who cares with Riley’s interiors and Alex’s writing they’ve managed to make his legend even more exciting and thrilling than I ever thought possible.

Innovate, fresh and full of mysteries this really is groundbreaking stuff and in my humble opinion is award winning worthy.

Doctor Who the Tenth Doctor #12

Titan Comics 2014

Written by Nick Abadzis

Illustrated by Elena Casagrande & Eleonora Carlini

Coloured by Arianna Florean

After a brief break in New York City, the Doctor and Gabby were ready to set off in search of a new adventure – but trouble is never far from the Doctor. Picking up a mysterious signal in the heart of Manhattan, he discovered a secret auction where, among the junk, he found something of true value: an alien device with unknown and powerful properties! Purchased by a private bidder, the Doctor followed its signal to actress Dorothy Bell’s apartment – stalked by the streetsmart agent, Cleo! Having got her hands on the device at Bell’s home, Cleo revealed the device’s true power: reverting Dorothy’s assistant Vivian back to a baby! The Doctor was hit, too.. and is retro-regenerating back to his ninth incarnation!

So last issue ended on such a cliffhanger note and part of me was hoping it would’ve lasted longer, at least so Gabby could meet his fomer self and see him regenerate back to the body she knows.  Alas dear friends that wasn’t meant to be still wow what a moment it was to see that happen.  Nick is fully immersed in the Doctor’s world and the way he writes he’s equally able to immerse us in this world as well.

Cleo is wonderful and while yes she’s working for the “bad guy” and is aquiring objects for him, apparently just her mother did, but as we see so aptly demonstrated here their relationship is exactly healthy.  So hopefully this isn’t going to be the last story we see Cleo in or her mysterious boss because their introduction to the Doctor’s world seems to be the beginning of adding a human to the ranks of his enemy species and someone could continue to pop from time to time either seeking revenge or just acquiring artifacts that keep him alive, rich and powerful.

So while all the action is happening to the Doctor Gabby is with her friend Cindy when she receives something of a mental S.O.S. through her phone and the pair go rushing off to find out what’s happening.  Gabby to help the Doctor and Cindy to see this man who has apparently usurped her friend and made her more distant.

There another aspect to this story that we haven’t really a clue as to what it really is or what it’s intent and purpose is.  We do know however that a sliver of something left it’s mass in space and came to Earth after it’s been awoken by the events with the Doctor.  This will undoubtedly bring Cleo back into contact with the Doctor and I look forward to seeing that happen.

The interior artwork remains the high quality stuff that we’ve come to expect from Elena, Eleonora and Arianna.  The characters come to life so wonderfully and the effects, mood and emotions flow freely here.  They make the Doctor’s world come to life beautifully and help Nick’s story reach new heights.

Titan Comics has taken the Doctor and his world to places we’ve not seen from anyone else and by creating new mythos and situations make this feel like a continuation of their series and it feels natural and exciting.

Over the past year or so I’ve been extremely privileged to be reviewing so many self-published books, thanks to them and to kickstarter and the like.  I’m always up for when I’m sent something i’ve never heard of and the blurb sounds promising, in this case we get the first case of a detective from Chicago and a murder mystery as nice welcome to town present.  The victim also happens to be one of the city's biggest men so they’ll be a lot pressure on him to solve this quickly.

I have to say when we I see a new book like this one of the first things i flip through to check out is the interior artwork.  I will admit that at first I thought it a tad immature but then I took a really good at it and began to appreciate what I was looking at.  The attention to detail in his jacket, the way the ink is strong on the linework and the way the colours seem to be washed and flow like a nice watercolour.  The detail we have that in the panels that highlight what’s important to see it’s really rather nice.  It has a unique quality about that I find charming.

I love a good mystery and this one took me a little by surprise.  I like how Robles was able to see the crime scene and evaluate showing off a sharp mind and nice skills.  It wasn’t hard to notice the book on the table in front of the dead man and it didn’t take a giant leap to say it is probably important in some aspect to what has happened what I wasn’t prepared for is the age of the book and what it contains.

That there is a similar murder in the book that goes back to colonial times to one that has taken place in the present adds a touch of the unknown and impossible that is a nice twist.  Suddenly the story seems to be more about the past intertwining with the present in some way that causes the reader to pause and think.  Is there some supernatural thing going on here or is this just case of history repeating itself?  We aren’t sure and that’s part of the appeal.

The past comes back to haunt the present in this new murder mystery from Paul and it’s a well crafted first issue full of weirdness and fascination.  The characterization is very well done, the introduction and setup is great and the interior artwork stands out.  From concept to execution this is a great offering and it only goes to show once again that sometimes you will find something that sticks with you after reading it from the most unexpected of places.  This is why I encourage everyone to visit the little guys you don’t know at conventions, look for them in Previews and take a chance when reading reviews like this one.

The Black Hood #5

Dark Circle Comics 2015

Written by Duane Swierczynski

Illustrated by Michael Gaydos

Coloured by Kelly Fitzpatrick

This series for me is already the breakout hit of the year.  It should be something that everyone is reading.  Duane has gone and taken an established hero in the Black Hood and given him the most unexpected of legacies and an origin story that is as dark and gritty as they come and yet ends with this redemption and brightness that is just amazing.

Equally as amazing is the interior artwork by Michael and Kelly.  There really such a grittiness to it that is gorgeous and detailed to give us this world Greg operates in.  It’s powerful and emotional in ways that hit you like a ton of bricks and honestly this couldn’t be done by any other team as effectively as it’s being done right here.

The way this issue unfolded was pretty darn spectacular and the brand of justice this Black Hood dishes out well he’s a cop and he’s not afraid of killing a man.   From threatening and beating up men to get to the higher ups yeah that’s par for the course.  What was nice to see was that chain of command went, who was involved and how he was able to take advantage of his position and his family to get away with things that are decidedly unlawful and counterproductive.  Granted I get it he did what he did to catch those people who were his rivals and even went so far as to frame Greg to disgrace him so he’d be in the clear to continue to grow his operation to greater heights.  Still that he could do this on the back of his brother is reprehensible.

I get ahead of myself here though.  Jessie’s driving Greg around getting him from place to place here watching him in action.  This should go against everything she stands for as a therapist and as his friend but I think she’s as fascinated by him as we are and is willing to see just how far he’ll go and if he can get this out of his system perhaps he’ll calm down and be able to move forward.  Of course let’s face it even if he weren’t popping pills like they were Pez he’s got the bug for vigilante crime fighting and this is only the beginning of his career.

We see Greg get exonerated and welcomed back to the force and the city as the “Hero Cop” once again and Jessie got him into a rehab center to get him off the pill dependency.  It would be a good ending to his story framing the man who tried to ruin him, bringing his underworld life to light and getting clean but he’s a cop and he knows what’s out there on the streets of the city he loves and he knows he can do something about that.  He clean up his city and keep his secret again after all when one Black Hood falls another one rises to take his place but this time he’s also the one who used his cop’s skills to figure everything out and now he’s in this for the long haul.

The Black Hoods adventures are just beginning and this creative team has done the impossible and made him one of comics most interesting and emotionally powerful men.

Sons of the Devil #2

Image Comics 2015

Written by Brian Buccellato

Illustrated by Toni Infante

This book has all the creepiness and intrigue you could possibly ask for.  As we open with what appears to be some cult leader who has sired so many children with the women who follow him, he as the two different coloured eyes that mark many of his children, and he talks about how they have the faced the greatest evil in the world and how they have chosen to live and can choose how to die as well.  I think what makes it more scary and why it fascinates so much is because it can be true.  We’ve seen dynamic cult leaders and what they can do with their words and that Brian can weave that into this is a real testament to his skill as a writer.

Meanwhile of course Officer Pope wants more time off as he has a lead on Vanessa but he’s denied the time off as he’s taken too many of em already.  Yet before we head on he receives a message to come get his child because they are scared.  A small prelude to the role he’ll play in this for sure but there really isn’t any greater pain a parent can face than knowing their child is in fear.

So as Travis is moving in with his girlfriend Detective Young stops by to ask a few more questions that sound suspiciously as if he’s hinting it was Travis who killed him.  His questioning about the connection to him and Klay and the search for his parents well it’s all but seriously Young is going about this as if Travis has more or a known connection to what’s happening than he does and he’s like that dog with bone who just won’t let go of a train of thought once he has it, could be he doesn’t have many trains of thought to latch onto I dunno.

I have to say i’m awfully impressed with how Brian is having the story keep moving forward and sometimes in ways that seem completely random and yet feel so perfectly right.  While his girlfriend wants to meet the photographer Klay found, who happens to be a local and is willing to do all the talking when Travis recognizes the voice as belonging to the man who killed Klay well it should seem more farfetched than it is but there are no coincidences it all happens for a reason.  Also I like that she knew that this man recognized Travis and he’s not making this up so she’s behind him, supportive and loving though now I have to wonder if it’s real love or a set up of some kind.

This is exciting stuff it has all the nuances of an old time mystery thriller woven into something stranger and more unnatural.   There are moments I get this whole Omen feel and that Travis is the next Damian though he’s completely unaware of any of it.  His past is complete mystery to him, he has no clue to who his parents were and why he as this temper of his.  There are those keeping an eye on him and monitoring him and keeping him from finding the truth he so desperately searches for making things that much more interesting and fueling the desire in the reader to keep coming back as we too search for those answers.

Toni’s interior artwork keeps that kind of old school noir feel to the book while still being expressive and at time explosive.

This is one of those books that captures your attention and imagination wonderfully and embroils you in the characters life and troubles in a way rarely seen.
