Sometimes something comes along that you weren’t expecting. Insane Comics has a very good amount of books out there, granted some are better than others, but it’s always worth a look see. No idea what this was about going into it, I prefer things that way after all so upon reading this I was like okay I like it. Don’t let the cover fool you either, it’s very much a fight club looking moment and well it’s apropos we’ll leave it at that.
This is a story that focuses on Jack and his life after society collapsed and America was quarantined and forgotten. It opens with a kind of regression happening and once again the idea of Roman Gladiators fighting for their freedom in front of the masses and the ruler have taken hold. I think that’s pretty neat actually the whole concept of regression isn’t new when society collapses but to go this route I thought was a nice touch. Definitely raises my interest level and I like throughout his time there Jack is seen like a modern day Spartacus.
Naturally that can’t be allowed by the cities ruler. I can’t get over how Rome this whole thing makes me feel. If you are going to reclaim a city and rule why not proclaim yourself Emperor and rule like one. To model this society on that is both genius and dangerous as Jack is beloved by the people who watch him fight for his freedom. Should something be done to him the populace could revolt and overthrow Eddie Scott.
At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like the artwork here but the more I see it the more I find it strangely fascinating and compelling. Chris’ eye for storytelling evolves throughout the issue and he’s a good grasp of anatomy and bringing emotion from the page. Also those Jack has to fight in the arena well yeah nicely done there too! The black and white style is one i’ve grown to really appreciate as it gives us a chance to really see the linework and the skill of the artist. I’m excited because if this is something early from him than I can’t wait to watch him grow.
We learn a limited history of the world this issue. We see Jack’s struggles when the collapse started and how he ends up in his current predicament. We don’t however learn how exactly the collapse happened and right now i’m not sure I want to. Let that be revealed over time as the story think it’s appropriate, see when it becomes important to the story that we learn how and why. We also get a fair amount of solid characterization as we see him on his journey.
That we open with his time in the arena then hit a point where there’s suspense and before learning why we go to his background. Seeing him try to protect his family, that he once worked for Eddie and why he fell out of favour. We see him grow to a point where this world starts getting to him and it’s the catalyst for a lot of what happens here. It’s very well told actually and the flow of the story is nicely done this way.
I’ll say this Jack isn’t your typical star of this kind of story. His own path is laid out before us and his motivations by the end of the issue. So yeah this is extremely well done and while we’ve seen a lot of “End of Days” types of stories this is has a nice originality to it. I’ll be on the lookout so I can follow his journey and see if he finds what he’s looking for and you should too.
