Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade & Kato

Dynamite Entertainment 2015

Written by G. Willow Wilson & Erica Schultz

Illustrated by Noah Salonga

Coloured by Dinei Ribiero

First impression is that I wish this was a mini-series!  I’m really quite taken with this pairing and how well they worked together and the fact that both women can stoically strong and effective.   The whole Swords of Sorrow crossover wasn’t really on my radar but perhaps now that i’ve read this one i’ll have to be giving it a shot since I’m that impressed by what I see here.  Oh and as usual the interior artwork here is fabulous!  Love the attention to detail in the characters, backgrounds and page layouts not to mention Masquerade’s power in use and then that 3/4th’s page pin-up yeah that was the clincher it’s phenomenal.

It still surprises me how well the Green Hornet and Kato have protected their secret that they are criminals even from “fellow crimefighters” such as Masquerade and with all the company crossovers lately I wasn’t aware anyone didn’t realize it was all a ruse to get closer and more trusted by the criminal element.   So this is my introduction to Masquerade and what she can do and I must admit i’m plenty impressed with her and strange ability.  So that when a strange man allows her into his mind and offers her the position of General in the upcoming war she takes it since she can see the truth.

When we get to Kato we see her chasing down the Black Beauty which seems to be going on one hell of a joyride without her.  Once she gets in the car and realizes there’s no one else in it is when Masquerade joins her and suddenly the two women have their first adventure together.  So what is going on well we soon learn who is behind this and it’s not whom I expected it to be.  Now I’m a huge Purgatori fan and seeing her serving this man she refers to as her Prince seems very out of character for her.  On the other hand yay Purgatori’s involved and looking as beautiful and deadly as ever!

After your typical heroes meet and fight then realize they should be allies not enemies though a very spectacular fashion thanks to Masquerade’s powers and a quick visual recap and Masquerade’s narration of what she sees of Kato’s life.  Then we turn to who is possessing the Black Beauty and it’s Masquerade who manages to defeat Purgatori this time around.  Wow this is pretty good stuff here and if you like me aren’t familiar with Masquerade then pick this up because she’s definitely worth knowing and this kind of introduction is perfect.

So the ladies do manage to get back home alright but it’s a one shot and that makes me sad because this is so well done it’s a solid story with incredibly good characterization and some stunningly good interior artwork.  While I question Purgatori’s motives in serving a man period since that seems out of character i’m going to have to follow this to see what she’s really up to.

Want to know who these characters are then pick this up you don’t have to read the main story but somehow if you’re like me than you’ll want to.  Dynamite is home to consistently strong, powerful and beautiful storytelling and here they just reaffirm that.

Hashtag Comics 2015

Written by Martin Dunn

Co-Plot, Art & Letters by Derrick Fish

Colors by Challenging Studios

I’m enjoying this book though I don’t see the horror aspect of it but that’s okay it’s more like this supernatural soap opera where you’ve got the pretty boy vampire who can basically do no wrong, literally, and the other factions jealous of his behavior and the immunity granted him.  Sure Las Vegas has this supernatural side that’s hidden away from the world, on purpose, and yes Dante Rivera flaunts his actions in front of everyone provoking them but still it’s more like something we’d see on the CW as a weekly series.   Don’t misundestand me here folks i’m really enjoying this it’s got all the drama and intrigue mixed with the power struggle of the supernatural to make things interesting.

Before I get into this issue I’ve gotta say i’m extremely impressed with the work Derrick did this issue.  Challenging studios does a remarkable as well but it’s really what Derriick brings that just grabs your attention, expands your imagination and takes the writing to that next level bring you into the story and being a part of this world.

Well what’s the old saying “be careful what you wish for because you just might get it” well that’s something miss Chelsea Nobles is going to have to learn the hard way.  I really do like the fact that she was whining about her life, job and that she wanted to be a writer of some note and now well she’s going to be one of the most influential writers around and she’ll never know exactly what she’s writing.

There is some incredibly good characterization going on here.  From what happens to Chelsea to the rantings of the Goblin at the council meeting to the fight between the Rivera brothers there is so much we learn about all the characters here.  Some through dialogue some though their actions and some just by looking at them, seeing their expressions and attitudes so that we are getting a much larger and complete picture of the player involved and what and how they feel about things going on around them.

Okay the introduction of  one of Cthulhu’s daughters who happens to be a sometime lover of Dante’s was a tad surprising as well.  Regardless if she, Mynoghra, shares her bed with Dante or not he has immunity from the council the members of whom she is currently allowing to breath.  There’s more here than meets the eye and it centers on the Rivera brothers and that mystery is one we’ll get to learn more about as things unfold.  For now I like this mystery before us it’s ambiguous enough to be intriguing and certain enough to draw some of the council to try and kill them.

I’m having fun with this book, it’s got great solid writing and characterization and some really great artwork to enhance the story.  Next issue we’ll see another faction of the Vegas supernatural underworld join the fray and I look forward to seeing how that plays out.  This is fun, original and full of that something that makes it special.

The Black Hood #4

Dark Circle Comics 2015

Written by Duane Swierczynski

Illustrated by Michael Gaydos

Coloured by Kelly Fitzpatrick

Well I kind of like that this issue it the proverbial you know what hits the fan.  That Duane has been able to keep this story moving at such a fast pace and not lose any time for characterization and character development has been wonderful to experience.  This is not like any other origin story out there and I greatly appreciate that because of it’s uniqueness this really can find a way to resonate with readers more making it one of those instant new classics.  Of course it doesn’t hurt that Michael and Kelly are involved as well because dang do they do something extraordinary on the interiors.  A great story is one thing but when combined with this kind of great illustrations it ramps the book to award winning worthy level.

I’m not sure if i’m in love with him or just enamored because really with only his cop training and experiences growing up he’s throwing himself into being a vigilante thanks to pain meds and other narcotics that he thinks gives him an edge.  Forget the scarred face I could still fall for a man who looked like that if he had a great personality and was fun to be around.  Still that he’s out there doing this is kind of crazy and kind of awesome at the same time it’s like he’s trying to rediscover who he is after the accident and being hooked on drugs and i’m all for that kind of journey.

That he’s doing it blindly, possibly a side effect of the drug use, is kind of crazy though and that things get to a point that even recognizes that something has to change is freakin incredible.  That he’s growing as a person seeing what he’s doing to himself and that he needs help well holler at ya boy because this is the true turning point now.  I have a feeling this is going to be that moment that changes his life and direction for good.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Archie lines of comics are some of the most sought after books on the market right now and it’s because of books like this one.  I mean everything that happens this issue should shock, amaze and thrill readers because you just don’t expect these things to happen in issue four!  The fact that Graham and Savitz have the drop on him even though he had the element of surprise shouldn’t be shocking they are more than street thugs they are organized crime and work for a scary man so the whole fight and his thinking about what’s happening it’s a wake up call.

There also seems to be a supporting cast finally developing for real not just people in his life who worry and check in on him.  Though let’s face it his old partner isn’t gonna be in the loop quite as soon as Jessie is let on the big secret.  Still the potential is here and from what i’m seeing from Duane is remarkable stuff and I can guess till sun sets on the dark side of the moon and never figure it out correctly.  Let’s face it too that’s a huge draw to reading this series you don’t know who’s going to be friend or foe not really.

The interior artwork here really is among the absolute best in the business.  Rarely will you see such dark stuff with so much detail and emotion.  Seriously the attention to detail in the backgrounds rival all the detail put into the characters and yes this dark and brooding but it’s also full of life and hope at the same time.

In my humble opinion this is a five star book and award worthy so if you haven’t experienced it yet call your local shoppe and order it today!

Flashback to a Coppola party after his movie is released and he’s somebody but the chat he has on the balcony is kind of both telling and a tad ominous as if foreshadowing something not so positive to come.  The way this issue starts off with that before the big rise and fall he goes through was a nice way to do it.

Back to now as while driving away from the scene of the diner trying to talk to police about what had just transpired which gets turned around into a big mess.  Trying to dive and talk not the smartest move to begin with he should’ve handed the phone to the bartender and let her try to explain.  She however has a piece of paper the killers had on them and well it has nice revelation on it one that well isn’t all that uncommon in L.A. considering but still adds enough occult stuff to make it creepy.

I do love how the two decide to work together to stop what’s happening.  The writing here is fantastic I mean all the while these two aren’t talking about themselves or really giving one another any sort of background information instead it’s slug some whiskey and go kill the killers kind of stuff.   Seriously this is fantastic writing from Chris as they hit a gun shop and Kleio she uses her feminine charms on the clerk oh man i’m loving it.  Way to go and write a transexual black woman and make her act and seem completely like any other woman around.

If you remember last issue we had those reporters who went to interview that creepy guy who ended up shooting them, if not what are you waiting for already?, well he’s back and we get a very good look at him and what makes him so damn crazy and leader of these animal masked marauders.   I’m a little sorry he was in his tightie whities when he did what he did man on man again magnificent writing because I dunno which dark gods these are, though one  is familiar like Anansi or something, but it makes his holy mission more understandable from this point of view.

I’m a fan of how this ended too.  Just how many twisted followers does this man have anyway?  I mean it was interesting enough to see his pet pigs early on  in his space suit, though I really have to wonder she’s topless why are they wearing bottoms at all?  Real animal kind of play would either be furries or naked why this halfway stuff?  Can’t be because you don’t wanna show nudity I mean there are nipples.  Alright but this army that gets them at the Hollywood Bowl is really rather large.

Now the ending ending well that’s just plain creepy.  Loved it but it’s odd and creepy.

I’m a huge fan of this, the way Chris is writing it is full of all kinds of cliche moments but the way he weaves it together makes this so much fun.  Add Curt and Pete’s work on the interiors and boy you’ve get the complete picture.  They do a wondrous job in bringing the characters to life, making our cult leader seem silly and deadly at the same time and somehow can also convey the urgency of what’s happening through their work.  I still think those two pages of multi-panels should’ve had him full frontal naked though and i’m sticking to that I mean why stop there when you are doing that?

Mayday is the breath of fresh air madness and mayhem you need in your life

Valiant Entertainment 2015

Written by Fred Van Lente

Illustrated by Francis Portela

Coloured by Andrew Dalhouse

We open with an assault on Future Neela’s headquarters it’s a spectacular spectacle to say the least and it’s one reason why Francis’ work is followed by so many.  What he did there in demonstrating one her defenses was just perfectly done.  Now that the original and the future Neela, who are one and the same but don’t worry confusion isn’t really present it’s easy to follow so all this time travel stuff shouldn’t intimidate anyone and well it’s Fred he can literally can write anything, anyone, any genre and be amazing doing it.

I do find it interesting to see how Neela feels and interacts with her future self, there’s a part of her that’s frightened by what she’s become and you can see that in her.   There seems to be the inner conflict that actually will end up breaking the whole can’t change history thing that’s been around for well forever.  I think it has to do with her and her future self though because if she couldn’t do it the first time what makes this time any different?  We’ll see it’s different or it wouldn’t be part of the story.

The characterization here is phenomenal all around from both Neela’s to Ivar to his siblings.   Ivar is a sneaky little thing isn’t he and I love it by going to Gilad first that we see and visiting him with a bag of Five Brothers, cajun fries, it really has this unique charm to it that you do and don’t expect.  We know the brothers have no real love for one another they seem to fight more often than not but at the end of the day family does win out and actions do speak louder than words after all.

By having the two have their conversation the way they do really does showcase not only what Fred’s capable of but the relationship between the brothers and who they are at their core.  I like that this one was more involved because Gilad really needed more coaxing and working with than Aram does and the fact that both Gilad and Aram make it quite clear that if the other’s in than he’s out, this fun in dysfunctional family dynamics when you are all(?) immortal.  Interesting thing here is that it’s alluded to that Ivar isn’t an immortal which I didn’t know considering the whole time travel thing and being their brother and exposed to same thing that granted the others their immortality.  See Fred can add some surprises into the story in some really unexpected ways.

I’m kind of sad yet glad that Archer isn’t going to be involved in this one only the brothers three.  I kind of like that the beginning of the book and the end seem to be the same thing, the ending first the actions leading up the beginning in the middle and then the realization of what’s happened/ing is really well done.

There’s nothing about this book that isn’t likable.  The writing is so solid and the characterization is beyond what you expect and Francis on the interiors dang son this just went to a whole new level of crazy awesome.

The future belongs to the Valiant and only they thrive this way!

The Order of the Forge #2

Dark Horse Comics 2015

Written by Victor Gischler

Illustrated Tazio Bettin

While i’m in love with the premise here but something happened this issue that I actually have a real problem with.  How many times was the word Fuck used?  It’s generally well accepted that Washington didn’t swear and while okay the word might have been used to suggest intercourse at that time it wasn’t until much later it became used in a less vulgar sense that we are familiar with today.  All the swearing that happens is in my opinion inappropriate out of place for all characters concerned.  A little more research into proper swearing in that era, Google and Bing for instance, would have shown what terms were commonly used then as compared to today.   If you can’t tell it really threw me off this issue I just can’t get past it for some reason it really feels that out of place here for me.

Big thanks though to Tazio here because his work on the interiors are flawless!  The attention to detail here really is amazing and Guillotine in action was beautiful stuff.  Also look at the backgrounds when Bestys is being yelled at and grilled check out the fireplace I mean c’mon Tazio is really an amazing talent.

So last issue the three friends along with Kate were struck by lightning during Ben’s experiment.  This issue we see the effects the lightning has on them.  Oh boy oh boy so naturally you see Ben’s brain glow through his skull and Paul and his horse bond but it’s what has it granted Kate and George, that he didn’t already have?    Just the thought of a team of well for lack of a better term super friends running around in this era is just the kind of thing to capture the mind and imagination of readers.

That the story already has a built in bad guy is pretty nicely done as well.  Kate’s Uncle who happens to be George and Paul’s boss is as nasty as they come and he’s got ambitions that go farther than we realize.  We learn he has a map and to what it could possibly lead to and if it’s true then I thank Victor for having them actually have landed before the colonists.

These guys are just not going to have much luck now that after Kate kind of forces George to reveal that he indeed cannot tell a lie thanks to his recent events she goes off to her uncles and steals the map and they meet up with Paul and Ben.  The pacing is great the way things happen here go smoothly and naturally nothing feels forced or out of place story wise.  Though we do finally get to see what Ben is capable of doing now and that’s pretty interesting since he’s an inventor and his brain has been seemingly expanded, so he “can see the entire universe at once” now.

This is incredibly good, solid and well thought out concept and one that we as an audience can get behind.  Swearing does seem out of place here though and i’m surprised it’s so prevalent but that’s Victor’s choice.  They have abilities now and a mission and someone trying to stop them oh and there’s a bit of romance too which lights up the past in new and wonderful ways.

I actually like this swearing aside it’s fun, interesting and adds a new element to history plus the interiors are just that darn good you can’t help but admire them.  Plus there’s a mystery and an adventure along with a good old fashioned stopping the bad guy.  Dark Horse can find some great works to bring to life and this is no exception.

Indestructible: Stingray #1

Darby Pop/IDW Publishing 2015

Written by Jeff Marsick

Illustrated by Luca Reguzzoni

Coloured by Zac Atkinson

She was a high school swimming star until her mutation was revealed, and Kelly (aka Stingray) was barred from competition. Turned lemons into lemonade by going “pro” as a superhero. Exceptional underwater strength and speed, but only limited “fish” physiology (i.e., she can’t breathe H2O).

Welcome to the not so secret origin of Stingray.  This story takes place five years ago with her public introduction to the League of Defenders on Santa Monica Pier.  I have to say that the interior artwork here is gorgeous and her sexy youthfulness really is a PR lovers dream.   Not everyone is happy with induction to the team however but this is the story of how she becomes a member and wins her spot on the team.

Her tour of their headquarters though already leaves us with questions as she’s told to pick a criminal out there and his record and everything about him is brought up and she chose Black Adder, though Princess doesn’t believe her reasoning and doesn’t like her and her standoff nature with her could be an interesting facet of the story.  Yeah thanks to the interior artwork we see there really is more here than meets the eye and could she have joined just in order to betray them?

I love Princess and her question about why you’d need someone with water based powers on the team, heck I think every since Aquaman that question’s been on most lips.  Still they are based in California and we all know the ocean is right there so they’ll be plenty of opportunities for her to show her mettle as a hero.  Confronting villains on bridge it really does open up a great opportunity for her to show she can be a valuable member of the team.  Then however something happens underwater that again calls her motives into question.

Infiltrating a super-team isn’t anything new but for once i’d like to see where the hero in question actually likes being a hero and ends up betraying those who got into this position in the first place.  This leads us to learning already why she asked about the Black Adder and who he really is to her as well as who the person is she’s working for/on their behalf.   Daddies little girl is not the brightest and has a habit of making bad decisions and he’s using his own daughter to further himself as a player in the underworld.  Here’s hoping that we’ll see her finally find herself and become a true hero and make amends for her past.

Darby Pop has some really innovate stories coming from their ranks and here’s hoping they continue to break the mold we’ve come to know all too well.

Sabrina #3

Archie Comics Publications 2014

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa

Illustrated by Robert Hack

As we continue this look at Sabrina growing up her life is portrayed wonderfully as a human teenage girl who happens to be a witch and belongs to both worlds struggling to fit into to both.  This issue opens with an interesting home school field trip where her aunts quiz her on the history of witces, a baptism, and the difference between the Salem trials and the Inquisition and we see from their point of view why.

Robert does this amazing job in bringing this to life, we start in 1962 and he sets the mood, tone and dress for something soft and beautiful but at the same time tinted with something darker as if just behind the scenes.

we move ahead to the present, five years later, and a white haired Sabrina and her boyfriend Harvey are at Baxter High School where Ms. Porter is lurking and wants to talk to Sabrina.  Last issue we saw who Ms. Porter really is so seeing her here you just know she’s up to no good and well let’s face it she isn’t  and what she’s planning all ties into this issues prologue.   She really is a wonderful villain and it’s kind of exciting to see her in action and almost root for her to cause as much trouble as she can.

I have to admit that kids are universal and the writing of two young love birds being well sexually frustrated and waiting is portrayed nicely as Harvey really wants to move their relationship to the next level.  Though let’s be honest back then high school sweethearts did tend to get married a lot more often.  Still between the dialogue and the interior artwork it paints a lovely picture of this time and Sabrina’s upcoming baptism where she must decide whether to live the life of a witch or a mortal it’s all being done perfectly.

Ms. Porter’s spy the talking crow however knows what’s coming for Sabrina and that Harvey feels sexually frustrated and left out and you can see what she’s planning here with her whole ominous warning that “it would catastrophic for all parties involved” if a mortal were to lay eyes on such a ceremony.   There’s just something so darn creepy about this darker look at Sabrina and her life that’s incredibly appealing and fits in with what’s happening over in Afterlife with Archie.  While personally I cannot wait to get back to seeing Sabrina’s ramifications for starting off that whole zombie outbreak getting a look at her life and her decisions leading up to that are well worth the wait.

I love the conversation between the cousins here too and the dialogue alluded to his orientation coming into question when he describes Harvey well it all just does add this whole new level to her.  Actually the whole story intertwined from the past to the present with her baptism and Ms. Potter’s intervention of the ceremony with the dark one, though really they worship Satan hmm okay he gives the witches their power and long life we’ll go with that, and Harvey showing up witnessing this is what you call incredibly storytelling.

The way things play out and what we’ve always known about Sabrina being twisted on it’s ears makes this the most fascinating and exciting version of the character ever depicted.  I anxiously await each new issue of this series to see what is going to happen next because it really is better than we could have possibly hoped for.

Surface Tension #1 (of 5)

Titan Comics 2015

Written and Illustrated by Jay Gunn

Alright here’s something we don’t see everyday and for that i’m thrilled.  There’s something already mysterious about the world’s oceans and then to see some sort plague that reacts to people turning them into almost these zombie type creatures who melt and go into the sea that’s creating a whole new kind of end the world scenario isn’t easy to do and I applaud Jay for his creativity here.

So at first with the two people coming from the sea, the British Channel Island of Breith, you get the impression that this isn’t like our world at all instead there are spires of coral jutting out of the ocean and ancient sea creatures littering the beach.  While we see the woman full on may I suggest in this day and age that the black out on him looked odd so if there’s a next time just show it.   However this is our world forever changed and as you see Shauna and a new species of pet you realize this world is incredibly well thought out and brought to life wonderfully.  It helps when the writer and the artist are the same person too since everything on every page is exactly how he envisions it.

Jay draws you into this world with such an amazing grace full of awe and wonder.  When Shauna finds the two who came out of the water, something that’s never been done before, and they are attacked by an dinosaur type sea creature help arrives and the real story begins.  A new religion is formed from the ashes of the old ones as we see at a burial for a local man and the questions keep coming for us as readers.   Surrounded by beautiful scenery and yet trapped for years thanks to the plague that’s swept the world the way these people are surviving is a story unto itself.

Cassel comes to fetch Mary who has been asked for by name by the woman who came from the sea.  Shauna’s been quarantined with the two as Mary makes her way to where they are and another part of the story is revealed.  While their blue hue isn’t explained a lot of stuff happens as we start to see what happens around the world as the “sea sickness” takes hold of people and changes the world’s population forever.  Thankfully right now not much of the magic or science or whatever is behind this new world is given to us but we get more than enough of how this spread and the effects it has on humankind.

This isn’t going to be a good book for me to explain to anyone other than to say that this is something you need to experience.  It has all the classic makings of a great detective novel but instead of a whodunnit it’s more of what did it and how did it spread so quickly.  Then there’s another added factor that there seems a moment when it’s almost like something in the sea is trying correct what’s wrong.  Meg was a scientist before going into the sea and re-emerging from it and what we learn from her conversation with Mary manages to make this even more interesting it’s as if Jay keeps taking the story to higher level page after page ensuring that you can’t help yourself but have to return to see what happens next.

Hauntingly beautiful interiors belie the seriousness of what’s happening in this world Jay has created as it’s is just as deadly as it is beautiful.

Kids of the Round Table #1

Action Lab Entertainment 2015

Written by Robert Tinnell

Illustrated by Brendon & Brian Fraim

It has been over fifteen hundred years since King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table have left the world.   Now Kevin has dreams that Merlin appears to him telling him that the dark forces are on their way back and he must find Excalibur and free him.  Only the dreams remain elusive to Kevin during waking hours so that they disturb him but he cannot recall them.  This is how the story opens and it’s a nice insight into Kevin’s life and family.

At school that day Kevin McKnight meets the new kid, Ben Choi, at Huett Junior High School who is the target of the school bullies when Kevin steps in.  The two become fast friends though during the rain as the two leave school and head to Kevin’s Aikido class Kevin begins to see Merlin during the waking hours as if he’s seeing a ghost.  A ghost that only he can see.

During class however Maggie Winthrop is introduced as a new girl in town, from upstate, and suddenly she is in the circle of newfound friends.  Also it’s obvious there’s a love triangle going on right off the bat as Kevin and Ben are smitten with the young lady and she flirts openly with Ben thinking smart guys are attractive.  Ben’s the brains, Maggie the brawn and Kevin seems to the middle ground good at both but not quite on either’s level.

After class the three go for a soda and soon get to know each other better.  Very quickly you get a sense of who these three kids are and that their budding friendship is no accident they all compliment each other and destiny, or Merlin, seems to have put them together for a reason though none realize that yet.  The characterization is wonderfully done and I like that the time has been taken to really delve into what makes these kids tick.  Though as Ben and Maggie bond over his science fair project once again Kevin sees Merlin in the rain as if he’s formed from the mists themselves.

Unlike most stories like this there’s an innocence here and it feels like this is happening organically as if Kevin is reluctant to remember his dreams and doesn’t feel he’s special enough to warrant any kind of special attention.   With two new friends and being something of a new kid in town himself the three will be thrown into something they aren’t ready for and that is what makes it great.  They haven’t trained for this they aren’t prepared this is fantasy to them something they never grew up believing in and Ben’s a scientist type as far from magic as one can get.  That it doesn’t appear to be taking place in England is interesting as well and I look forward to learning how Merlin hid Excalibur and why Kevin can claim it.  So this has all the makings of a perfect all ages coming of age story where they kids find themselves and what they are capable of.

The interior artwork here is really very good.  I like the way it all comes together with a realistic cartoon style art and that when Merlin appears it’s slightly different than the rest as he should be.   The artwork is expressive and descriptive and more importantly all age appropriate and that’s delightful.

Welcome to a new version of the legacy of the Knights of the Round Table one that is easily accessible, enjoyable and smartly written and wonderfully illustrated.
