Health and the Challenges That Inspire Authors
Many graphic memoirs share a common theme of mental health issues that the subject has encountered as a spouse, child, or family member, or that they have overcome or continue to deal with. This session will explore the ideas that inspired these creators to share this experience. How can educators and librarians use these stories as a way to either instill compassion and empathy or to help that reader find a way to resolve their own challenges?

Join Lion Forge editor Christina "Steenz" Stewart, Eisner award-winning store owner Jenn Haines, and others for ideas on how both can help strengthen their graphic novel section, as well as produce events to serve their collective.

Get In the Van & Take the Blade: ComixTribe Announces Highly Anticipated New York Comic Con Exclusives(Friday, September 28, 2018, Newburyport) -- ComixTribe announced full details today for its New York Comic Con exclusive books, including the highly anticipated return of its best selling series of all time, the smash hit crime horror series SINK, and the world premiere debut of the new dark fantasy series, WAILING BLADE.

"We debuted SINK to rave reviews at New York Comic Con a few years ago, before it took the direct market by storm last year," said writer John Lees, hot off the heels of taking home a BEST WRITER award for his crime horror series from the Scottish Independent Comic Book Awards. "It's only fitting that we launch the new volume of SINK, BLOOD AND RAIN in NYC this year."
In SINK #6, titled "Death and the Midden", Lees and acclaimed artist Alex Cormack return to the critically-acclaimed crime horror cult sensation with its most audacious, violent chapter yet! A young nurse wakes up in the back of a blue van, surrounded by murderous clowns.... And her night only gets worse from there! But in her fight to survive, she'll discover just how resourceful -- and dangerous – she can be.
But a new issue of SINK isn't the only thing ComixTribe is wielding at New York Comic Con Booth #1765 this year.
WAILING BLADE #1, a bloody, brutal fantasy adventure from writer Rich Douek (Gutter Magic) and artist Joe Mulvey (SCAM) will be unsheathed for the first time at this year's NYCC show.
"Wailing Blade is a no-holds-barred mash-up that fans of Conan the Barbarian, Mad Max, and the Masters of the Universe are going to love, " said co-creator Rich Douek. "We're thrilled that fans are finally getting the chance to #TakeTheBlade!"
"When you name a character the HeadTaker, it comes with a responsibility," said Joe Mulvey. "The first issue contains 30 pages of intense action, and yes, a lot of heads will be taken... and we're just getting started."
Douek & Mulvey are joined for the series debut by a superstar team including colorists Chris Sotomayor and Jules Rivera, letterer Taylor Esposito and a featuring a cover by Declan Shalvey!
To bring some of these exclusive books to market, ComixTribe has partnered with Ivie League Comics, Mutant Beaver and The Comic Mint.
SINK Volume 2 "Blood and Rain" begins with SINK #6, an extra-sized issue that will be available with three New York Comic Con exclusive covers, a month before it releases in the direct market.

Image Comics: We Believe in Horror

Image Comics has ushered in a new era of horror with cerebral writers and visceral artists elevating sequential-art dread to claustrophobic heights. From W. Maxwell Prince’s suburban doom in ICE CREAM MAN to Pornsak Pichetshote’s reflective haunted house boiler, INFIDEL, comics are evolving terror to new personal, socially minded levels. Join a roster of the most sinister storytellers including David F. Walker (BITTER ROOT), Matthew Rosenberg (WHAT'S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE?), Dennis Culver (BURNOUTS), and Will Dennis (editor on MOONSHINE, WYTCHES, GIDEON FALLS) to discover how they're altering an entire genre.

Friday, October 5 @ 2:45 – 3:45 PM, Room 1A24
Image Comics: We Believe in Vision

Since its creation, Image has remained a bastion for creators to foster their biggest, boldest ideas. Join a vanguard of storytellers as they walk through their most daring projects and how they arrived there—including a surprise announcement. Join panelists Jason Aaron (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, THE GODDAMNED), Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, DIE), Stephanie Hans (DIE), Gerry Duggan(ANALOG, DEAD RABBIT), Jen Bartel (BLACKBIRD), Joe Casey (MCMLXXV, JESUSFREAK), Daniel Warren Johnson (MURDER FALCON, EXTREMITY) and special guests for an introspective dive into the comics defining the future of the medium.

Saturday, October 6 @ 3:00 – 4:00 PM, Room 1A21
Image Comics Presents Deadly Class 101

In 2014, writer Rick Remender and artist Wes Craig unleashed a relentless tale of brutal vengeance and discipline in DEADLY CLASS, where the homework is homicide and the lectures are lethal. The neon-drenched world of Marcus Lopez Arguello and King’s Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts will soon debut as an original television series on SYFY, as the comic series continues to crank the pressure on a group of teens training to be career assassins. Join the creators of this groundbreaking comic as Remender, Craig, editor Sebastian Girner, and colorist Jordan Boyd recount the origins, development, and future of their transformational epic.

Sunday, October 7 @ 3:45 – 4:45 PM, Room 1A21
Image Comics Live Draw: Art Jam with Todd McFarlane, Wes Craig, and Mirka Andolfo

Join us for a special live draw session, where a trio of Image’s most imaginative trailblazers each collaborate on one exquisite corpse-style illustration. Image co-founder Todd McFarlane (SPAWN), Wes Craig (DEADLY CLASS, THE GRAVEDIGGERS UNION), and Mirka Andolfo (UNNATURAL) will each contribute a segment to a kinetic digital canvas, while also discussing their work process and expansive histories. An experience designed to show off the sheer skill of Image’s line-and-shape maestros, stop by for an unforgettable experience.

As different iterations of classic superheroes emerge (Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Gwen), what remains consistent is the archetypal journeys of so many heroes in comics. Using Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces this panel will discuss the universal appeal of comics and how so much of that appeal is based on readers seeing themselves in the work and following along on the hero's journey.
