RENOWNED GUESTS AND MORE ATTRACTIONS
Multi-genre popular culture convention continues to act as economic incubator for the city
INDIANAPOLIS (May 22, 2018) – Geeks, gamers and superfans unite! Indy PopCon, Indianapolis’ celebration of all things pop culture, is back for its fifth anniversary, and they’ve raised the bar again for attendees and the city of Indianapolis.
The three-day event takes place June 8-10 at the Indiana Convention Center and will welcome more than 20 special guests, including several big-name celebrities, YouTube sensations, gamers and creators from all aspects of pop culture.
Attendees can meet Kristian Nairn and Isaac Hempstead Wright from HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, LeVar Burton from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Reading Rainbow, Wil Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory, Pom Klementieff from Avengers: Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Elizabeth Henstridge from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Tara Reid from American Pie and Sharknado, just to name a few.
PopCon continues to bring some of the largest names in pop culture to Indianapolis, but the event’s true mission is to give creators – of all kinds – a platform to find new audiences. Instead of focusing on one specific fandom, Indy PopCon flips the script on the typical con experience by focusing on all genres of fandom.
“At its core, Indy PopCon is a celebration of Indianapolis and everything our great city has to offer. Unlike other conventions that visit Indianapolis, PopCon originated right here in our city, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to host the event for the fifth year in a row,” said Carl Doninger, president of Indy PopCon. “Indy PopCon prides itself on being open and accepting of everyone, which is why we focus on a variety of different fandoms. There truly is something for everyone at PopCon.”
In honor of Indy PopCon’s fifth anniversary, the convention will be more interactive than ever, including 24-hour tabletop gaming, cosplay contests, arcades and more – all included with a general admission ticket. PopCon is also family-friendly, with interactive kidzones and fun, educational opportunities the whole family can enjoy. Additional interactive events including escape rooms and laser tag will be running throughout the weekend.
In 2014, Indy PopCon welcomed roughly 9,000 attendees during its inaugural year. In recent years, the popular convention has grown to more than 28,000 attendees with an economic impact amounting to more than $5.8 million for Indianapolis. Now in its fifth year, PopCon is expecting more attendees than ever and has reserved more than 275,000 square feet at the Indiana Convention Center for thousands of attendees from 48 states and nine countries; more than 350 vendors, creators and game developers; and over 220 panels, events and workshops.
The title sponsor of this year’s PopCon is Indianapolis-based tech consultancy company BitLoft. Bitloft recently announced the launch of Player One eSports, a rapidly growing community of competitive high school gamers. The company will be hosting an eSports competition at the con, awarding $35,000 in total prizes to the top competing teams.
