“We’re heartbroken to have to make this decision, but our fans’ health is of the utmost importance to us,” said Carl Doninger, co-owner of Indy PopCon. “This event is what we work toward all year, to have our family of geeks and gamers come together to celebrate their fandoms. But right now, the only way to do that safely is by being apart.”
The July event is postponed with the hopes of rescheduling for late 2020. All pre-purchased admissions and items will be transferred to the newly scheduled dates. If ticket holders are unable to attend the new dates, or should Indy PopCon be canceled for the entirety of 2020, admission will be transferred to the 2021 dates at no additional cost. Vendor agreements will also transfer to newly scheduled dates.
New for 2020, Indy PopCon was set to introduce the first PopCon International Film Festival at the convention this summer. This event will now be held online. Anyone with pre-purchased tickets will have access to the full lineup of feature and short films submitted from filmmakers around the world beginning July 9th.
“We’ve seen streaming platforms step up as movie theaters have closed across the country, and we’re excited that we can make the same pivot to digital content for our first film festival,” said Kris Keys, co-owner of Indy PopCon. “Filmmakers from 10 countries have submitted their work, and we look forward to sharing them with the Indy PopCon family in July.”
As Indy’s premier comic and pop culture convention, Indy PopCon aims to bring some of the largest names in pop culture to the city each year. The event’s true mission, though, is to give creators of all kinds a platform to find new audiences. Instead of focusing on one specific fandom, Indy PopCon flips the script on the typical con experience by focusing on all genres of pop culture fandom. Indy PopCon is working to ensure it meets this mission in 2020.
Fans can still expect to see their favorite artists and creators, podcasters and YouTubers, and celebrities and voice actors at the postponed event, as well as participate in unique workshops and events, play board and video games, enter contests, and more.
Further information and updates about Indy PopCon’s in-person event will be shared on its website and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
