(November 26, 2019) On Saturday November 30th, the Los Angeles-based Secret Movie Club is screening Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal anime AKIRA. This just-announced pop up screening of AKIRA kicks off Secret Movie Club’s Anime Buffet Programming, which runs from January-April 2020 and is scheduled to include such films as Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millennium Actress, Metropolis (2001), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Vampire Hunter D, Grave of the Fireflies, andTokyo Godfathers.

“We can’t do an overview of Japanese anime without screening AKIRA,” said Secret Movie Club founder Craig Hammill. “Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo in 1988 based on his own manga, AKIRA has basically influenced all international pop-culture that has come after it. You might notice traces of its DNA in creative works as disparate as Rian Johnson’s time-travel movie Looper, the video game Final Fantasy 7, The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Tetsuo, and Ready Player One, just to name a few.”

AKIRA will be shown at Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:59 PM at the Vista Theater in Los Feliz, the historic single screen theater built in 1922. The Secret Movie Club screening will present the restoration DCP in Japanese with English subtitles. This pop up screening will be a unique opportunity to see the film on the big screen; AKIRA will be indefinitely removed from rep theater circulation on December 1, 2019.

“Like another famous sci-fi landmark movie of the 1980’s, AKIRA takes place in a future dystopia 2019.” said  Hammill. “AKIRA set the template for almost every cyberpunk story that came after it: a dystopian metropolis, shadowy government secret police, underground resistance fighters, an oppressive central government.”

Attendees can purchase limited edition SECRET MOVIE CLUB posters for every screening at all events, which feature new art by contemporary illustrators. Each film is preceded by a brief talk from Secret Movie Club founder Craig Hammill and a trivia question for the audience.
Secret Movie Club is a group project among the founders and the audience. Audience suggestions are taken and often used. Secret Movie Club aims to celebrate the wonderful experience that comes from watching the world's greatest movies in great movie theatres with great audiences.
