So when we last left the gang Dust had been eliminated and everyone but Spatz had been teleported into the future. Dust’s destruction meant that all the criminals that had come to this era and were imprisoned were going to be let free since he was no longer there to contain them.
This issue opens with something of a surprise as we get a look at Eve and her life before meeting Spatz. I have to say I wasn’t really expecting something like this but props to Porto for it. I mean wow this was intense and kind of brutal and yet completely fits with these future scenarios. It’s also interesting to see where Eve kind of lost her innocence and became the girl Spatz met because that was one moment you’ll likely never forget.
While I’ve watched Gavin’s work grow and improve since issue one came out I have to say the point he’s at is amazing to see! This opening and the crazy amount of detail work on the characters and the backgrounds have taken my appreciation for him and his work to a whole new level. His eye for storytelling through pages and panels, perspective and angles keep growing and become better and better.
So while we see Eve grow and evolve as a character we also get a bit of me, myself and I. Meaning Spatz of course the older one in stasis is now free and is with the young man we’ve seen throughout the past 10 issues. If you think the odd couple was a nice pairing you ain’t seen nothing yet as you watch an old mad, manipulative man and his younger less experienced self interact with one another. Just for good measure we see the in-between Spatz complete with new scarred chest.
So the characterization here is phenomenal. We see the evolution of Eve and that’s something to witness as it basically covers her life from a little girl to a woman. Then with everything we see and learn between the two Spatz well that is some stuff kind of boggles the mind and yet explains and makes you question more. When a writer can do that all at one time you know you’re in for it. There’s this different, unique way that Porto has approached his storytelling that really kind makes you sit up and pay attention and it’s kind of subtle. Before you realize it you’re invested and totally involved in what’s happening and have become part of this world.
One things for sure while this series needs to keep continuing on these creators are going to be big deals someday. Blue Juice has one heck of a creative team on this and it should be a mainstay of everyone’s reading list. I mean c’mon it’s got science fiction, action/adventure, mystery and intrigue and heck even romance. Not to mention some soap opera style backstabbing and hidden agendas thrown in for good measure.
So contact your local shoppe or service and make sure this is on your list. Don’t worry if you’ve not read one yet there are trades of the previous issues and this is new reader friendly so you can jump right on in!
