For a hot minute I wasn’t thrilled with a new Magnus. I get that Dynamite has been great at showing us legacy versions and alternate reality versions and always end up going back to the original in some way, shape or form. I know that and yet I was still apprehensive go figure. Still Kerri has won me over or more accurately I should Kyle won me over. That she has switched jobs and is a A.I. Psychologist now from I’m presuming was a job with the police we see her as a decidedly unsure of herself kind of woman. The characterisation of her as second guessing herself and the actions she’s taking is rather intriguing.
I think what’s being done with her here makes for fascinating stuff. When you add in the police who have brought her into this job and then her former contacts who continue to flesh out her previous and current roles well it paints this picture where we want to know what the hell happened to put her in this situation. Then throw into the stuff that’s happening currently and it’s like this wonderful whirlwind of action and excitement that is about to be unleashed.
The interior artwork here is pretty nice. It kind of feels like what we’ve been seeing in the Young Animals imprint but with more attention to detail. The use of page layouts through their angles and perspective are handled extremely well. The utilisation of backgrounds is nice to see as well it’s got that ability to flesh out what’s happening in the panels that much more. I do very much like the whole vibe brought to this to make feel like some kind of Noir Detective throwback as well it adds a nice dimension to what is happening.
Kyle is an incredibly good writer and the kind of story he’s delivering isn’t what I was expecting at all and i’m grateful for that. There’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye and I can’t wait to see how the different angles, three of them investigating this murder, converge into one. It’ll be interesting for sure when we find out who’s behind it all and how it can be stopped or at least thwarted temporarily.
