Alterna Comics 2015
Written & Lettered by Wes Locher
Illustrated by Eduardo Jimenez
Well this is the last issue of this wonderful introduction of a new world and wonderful characters and a complete and utter sense of silliness and fun that is desperately needed in the world today. This has made me laugh out loud, grin like the Cheshire Cat and has left me wanting to see more of their adventures.
We open this issue with Albright being interrogated and a look back at how exactly the alien invasion played out. I have to say that Eduardo’s two page spread was a delight as we see just how big these aliens are compared to humans as they all are going after each other. Ironically enough one of the soldiers with a rocket launcher decides to take out Albright’s ship with Gibson still dangling from it.
I have really enjoyed how Wes has structured and written this story. He’s been able to infuse great characterization a few surprises into this over the top silly look at the Men In Black cliche and turn it into a buddy story that doesn’t stop. Not only do we have Gibson and Hatch but then there’s Ike and Chester the good ole boys who have been shall we say recruited into service, Albright and his assistant not to mention Snahkuhn all running around trying to get the crystal. It really is this merry go round of action and comedy to rival anything in movies, television or comics today.
Once it’s all said and done and the dust has settled and it’s time for Albright to learn his fate it’s too fitting for him. With Snahkuhn’s people sent home and with him still here on Earth they are going to find themselves spending a lot of time together. Also while we don’t see what happens to Ike, Chester is now one of the team and he’s paired up with the boys for now. But wait there’s one more final reveal on the last page and then it’s time for this crew to come up with something new for the boys to face.
There’s a reason I love self-published books and that’s because they don’t have established characters and rules on what they can or cannot do with them. The love these guys have for this project is clearly evident and honestly it’s rather infectious. Sometimes people go for stupid humor or crass and base humor to compensate for their shortcomings but Wes took a more intelligent approach and made the over the top humor smart.
It’s truly a unique offering unlike anything you’re gonna find anywhere else.
