A new science fiction miniseries that gives us another vision of the cosmic horror entities! With the Gods Beyond Our Understanding nothing is coincidence. Duplicity and greed comes as standard. Titan, the "new" Mother of Monsters, knows the rule: "None Shall Be Greater Than Another." Yet deception and force keep her unwilling to bend.
Alright so at first glance I thought this wasn’t so much a science fiction story as it was one pertaining to the old gods. Then as I kept reading I began to fully understand how it was both of those things and so much more. Amigo has this habit of putting out some the most unexpected and interesting stories and this is is clearly no exception.
I like the idea of a woman named Titan and the opening here was definitely one of those opportunities where they made the most of it. It is dynamic, sharp and leaves you wondering what the heck this is all about ensuring that me as the reader wants to keep going. The need to know which is inherent in all of us is piqued rather well and from what I can gather well Kronos appears to be either saving her or wanting to kill her we’re just not sure. That I am not sure is the kicker, I want to be sure so suddenly I am in.
The way in which the book is structured is nicely done. We do get a flashback to a month ago which is when the story begins and they make it take off in earnest. In the depths of space we join Titan as we see the events that push the story forward to the now portion and it’s an excellent time to see more about her life that she leads and those in it. I do like that the computer A.I. is Persephone it just fits beautifully and the man in charge of the company she works for Heraklion, her father, and the type of man he is.
With all the characters that are introduced to us they come complete, well no one is complete but the characterisation is so exceptional that we know who they when we meet them. The dialogue and body language and how the represent themselves paints a surprisingly clear picture and we kind of know who among her contact and family that Titan needs to watch her back from. Also it creates a whole subset of storytelling here that broadens the way I see the book. Aside from what she’s going to be dealing with Cosmically speaking she has to deal with multiple fronts “at home” as well while some of those fronts are going at each as well. It is like watching a flower bloom it’s petals connected but growing out strongly on it’s own.
I am huge fan of the interior artwork here as well. There is something almost classic comic book style about it that resonates well with me. The scratching effect used to denote facial lines and in other areas is nice to see. The manipulation of linework using varying weights to create the effects needed here are well done. There is some really nice attention to detail here that brings things to life superbly. While backgrounds are more limited the way colours are used offset that a bit though I would like to see more used. The way page layouts are utilised and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a great eye for storytelling. Also there is some really nice creativity and imagination on display here.
From the concept to the story execution this is something new and different and while based on a familiar idea. Amigo once again has some very talented creators here who are telling a strong story that is easy to become engrossed within.
