One hundred years ago, Bowen Tyler, a handful of British allies, and the crew of a German U-33 submarine were lost at sea. What they discovered was something that defied time, and all of known science: the island of Caspak! Hidden inside impregnable rock walls lay a prehistoric world, filled with terrifying creatures and murderous primitives from every era of time and evolution. Somehow, the island was never again found, and the stories of the survivors of Caspak were considered fantasy.
I’m a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original story and I was intrigued when this was on the weeks offerings. I wasn’t sure if this would be a new take on the classic or just a retelling but knowing that Mike was writing it it was one I wanted to try. So much to my happy surprise I discovered that this is a continuation of that story set in the present. Abby is the co-chair of research and development of Tyler Industries and she’s putting together an expedition to find her great grandfather’s mysterious Island and the truth behind it.
It’s a great premise to keep the tale alive and well, and as a reminder that great literature never goes out of style. One of the people Abby seeks out to invite along is someone she’s never met before a young man named Ethan Bradley, whose great (x3) grandfather was a very good friends with Bowen Tyler and on that expedition and if rumor is to be believed his wife was resident of Caspak Island. It’s a nice tie-in to the original story and cast of characters.
I have to say I’m pretty impressed with what Mike’s come up with and how the Island can be found again and modern technology be useless around it. So that this really is the land that time forgot as time doesn’t seem to work on the same scale there. I think that while getting there is half the battle in this case it was more like destiny was waiting for them to play their role in all this. Finding Caprona is just the beginning the real story starts once they set foot on it and I can’t wait for not only the culture shock to set in but for those living there to learn about the outside world.
At first I wasn’t so sure about Giancarlo’s work on this but the more I look at the more I like it. His style and ease of what’s on the page has a charming quality to it. Then with Flavia there are times when we see the ocean and it’s definitely a wow factor. The way the book flows though is nicely done, the characters have their own distinct look and personalities that come through.
This is off to a great start as Mike is able to use modern characters and place them firmly in a world that’s been nothing to them but legend and a fairy tale. With excellent characterization and charming interiors it’s time once again to enter The Land That Time Forgot.
