Honor can’t seem to stay out of trouble and the opening demonstrates this nicely as she’s in some sort of arena fighting for her life. But how did she get here is the real question and it’s one they don’t waste any time in telling us.
One month earlier as the HMS Fearless has returned to Manticore for repairs when Honor’s mother contacts her with a request. Her uncle Jacques has gone missing and she’d like her to find him. Oh the dialogue of her mother’s message is classic too I mean we all know our parents worry about us but so few are as blunt as this. She’s definitely a character and one that while worries over her family is able to inject some much unexpected humor into her message.
This request changes Honor’s plans of staying on board the Fearless while repairs are made and she clears it the necessary folks and off she goes leaving the ship in the first officer’s hands. Again i’m really liking the dialogue here so while i’m glossing over the series of events what we get is great characterization and a really good look at the relationship the two have with one another.
Honor needs help however and her first stop on Hephaestus is to see her crewman Mr. Harkness who plans to sleep a week solid. Very quickly she enlists his aid in doing work that wouldn’t be considered legal showing him her trust in him and her admiration of his skills. Harkness isn’t alone there as his buddy Scotty is with him as well and comes back to the room to discover what’s going on. Soon the three of them are off to the pleasure station Eros in search of Honor’s uncle.
The writing is fantastic i’m really enjoying how much we’re getting to know these characters and see them interacting with one another. Honor would’ve done this alone but the boys well where one goes the other follows, could there sexuality be fluid and more than just friends hmm I hope so that would spice things up for sure. Still they are going there under false pretences, R&R and having fun still they are flagged coming in and with a Treecat they are placed immediately under surveillance.
So now that they are on Eros and have settled in let the good times roll, right after Alia head of security on Eros has chat with all three of them. Though right off the bat Nimitz, the Treecat sees someone that sets his fur on edge.
With Linda’s ability to bring this life this book really has that wonderful science fiction feel to it where we see three-d screens, holograms with bright colours and clothing that looks more like uniforms that you think of when you think a futuristic world like the one they inhabit. Plus the alien animals based on ones we know showcase some great imagination.
You don’t have to have read any previous Tales of Honor stories to jump in here it’s completely new reader friendly. The story starts off easy to follow, grabs your attention and doesn’t let go and leads you into this amazing adventure.
