Jake searches for his visiting friends as his family prepares for a dinner meeting that could reveal what is causing the green aurora and electric outage.

Now I know most people and we are not afraid to admit that one of our guilty pleasures is watching those made for SyFy disaster movies.  My friends this is like that but one hundred times better, more realistic and the production value alone is something else.  What James is able to do with the story is exactly what needs to be done for an audience to understand the technical stuff while not feeling like anything has been dumbed down.

This issue takes us on a nice balanced journey.  It has the right blend of Jake trying to figure out what’s going on, discovering the state of the town and action sequences.  The revelations that come aren’t that much a surprise to us but to him yeah and it’s only going to get worse the more he learns.  Which by the way is something that I am so looking forward to.  The more people around Jake that we meet the more likely things are to skyrocket out of control at some point and of course with looters, opportunists and whack jobs out there ready to step up and take what control they can we’re guaranteed some interesting moments.

Now with this massive solar flare and emp that came with it the power is out and as it so happens it’s dark out.  The Earth is surrounded by this green/blue hazy light show thanks to the CME and it’s messing with people.  However the interior artwork isn’t challenged by this at all.  No it’s extremely impressive to see this kind of darkness represented and how it impacts the reader making them think how it impacts the characters.  The use of page layouts through angles, perspective and the utilisation of backgrounds is superbly done.  The attention to detail is magnificent to see.  The visuals really hammer home the story and that’s as it should be.

The way this series has been structured is fantastic to me.  We’re in issue three and we’re getting to some of what i’d call the meat of the story.  We opened with a now moment and here we are still in the past seeing how things got to that point and it doesn’t feel like it’s either taking too long or being rushed through.  There’s a natural progression to the story and how it needs to unfold that I am impressed with.

So far the characterisation is equally as impressive.  I say so far because this is just the beginning we’re going to see some drastic changes in people as truths are revealed and the reality of the situation changes and becomes more dire.  So there will be plenty of character development still to come and while I anticipate that it’s still exciting because we haven't finished meeting everyone yet.

This is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen in how to come up with a premise and then execute it flawlessly so that it can appeal to the widest segment of readers possible.  This is a must read story folks so order the trade today!
