In 850 CE Alba (present-day Scotland), it is night. A storm rages on the Great Sea and a Viking drakkar is shipwrecked against the cliffs. The only prisoner on the ship, a Northman, miraculously manages to escape. Fleeing from his past, from unforgiving nature and armed only with luck, the man moves into the clearings of the coast. Foreigner and hated in this land, the skilled Viking warrior will clash with the inhabitants of Alba, while a powerful witch watches him. Fighting for his life... surviving for revenge. A Northman.

I found myself really getting into this book.  Yes it did make me think of Vikings and other period shows we’ve seen but overall it really struck me how well it would fit into those worlds while still be an amazing stand alone story.  I love that we see, the Northman with no name, still living by the will of Odin and Baldr and doing what he knows how to do, fight and survive.  I’m intrigued by what we learn here and I want to know more and this is thanks to what we learn and how we learn it.

I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continues to portray them as familiar people.  The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we’re caught up in what we see and have this burning desire to know more.

I do very much appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge and grow.  The layers contain the characterisation and the plot twists and all the good bits and whether or not they work with the main arc or simply swirl around it they add depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceedingly well.

The interiors here are absolutely gorgeous.  The linework is sensational and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level of detail work is exceptionally rendered.  I love seeing the backgrounds and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  I have to be honest with y’all the artwork here is so incredibly beautiful and it completely amplifies the enjoyment of this already amazing story.  The colour work is brilliantly rendered.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such a masterful eye for colour and how to maximise its effects.

This is the beginning of what I think will be a phenomenal story.  To be stranded in land that fears and hates him after having been outlawed by his own people is going to be something he has to learn to deal with and overcome if he’s to survive.  Finding someone, anyone willing to listen and offer him shelter, and more for his services if my thought process is on the right track, and food is going to be a hard sell.  This has such strong, intelligent writing with great characterisation and mind numbing interiors that will have you swept up into the story faster than he was shipwrecked in this land.
