I am such a huge fan of this series. Yes it’s set in a Dungeons & Dragons world and but it’s really a damn funny comedy buddy story at it’s core. This arc we see their notoriety has garnered enough attention that someone left a newborn baby at their door for protection. This is a special baby and it isn’t long before they are besieged with those who want the child, preferably dead.
I like how this issue opens with a display of will. One man wanting answers from another who deals in secrets and knowledge. Ah his lordship in bed with his favorite despite that another bore him an heir. When Domitius bursts in on them I do wish we’d seen more of what she suggested after all his lordship seemed open to the idea. I will also say that will all the naked women we see a little more equal opportunity among the men wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Back to Weasel, Bram and the baby as they learn exactly who the child is and who is after them. What I like about this is the fact that even knowing doesn’t mean they are going to have an easy time of getting out of this. Malikita is vicious and she craves her power and has the means to do what it will take to stay in her current position.
I like that when she summons her new wizard to replace the old one he looks decidedly like a version of Doctor Strange oh and he’s the old man’s son to boot. While at the same time we see the Chief Magistrate give orders about the pair to his men. Torres really can weave a tale that seems haphazard or full of contradictions but in the end he manages to pull it all together so that it seems genius in retrospect.
What i’m really enjoying too with all this is the chance to see Nacho, Sergio and Veronica bring what’s happening to life. The interiors here are pretty amazing and the giant rock creature that’s summoned is both formidable and fun to witness. Not to mention the great detail we’re getting to see in all the characters. This is some of the most detailed in both features, backgrounds and all around panel usage and page layout I’ve seen the first arc.
I’ve been impressed with the action/adventure we’ve continue to see in this arc. They’ve got the added hinderance of trying to keep the baby safe while fighting and it’s been absolutely delightful to see. Part of this is the whole way Torres is able to keep their characterization evolving and changing depending on the circumstances they find themselves in. He manages to keep them fresh, interesting and unpredictable and that’s why I keep coming back.
Also with each threat they face it seems they become bombarded with faster and with more ferocity than the time before. This time it seems divide and conquer while one is facing the rock creature the other, with child in hand, faces daytime vampire women. We also see more and more how each of the storylines are blending into one another more. This is excellent writing.
Amigo is like the little engine that could surprising us time and again with the quality of what they produce.
