BRAM the northerner and the sultry WEASEL, are two notorious (and poor) thieves in GERADA, the big city where everything is possible. So possible that they have faced angry thieves, angry killers, angry undead, angry dragons... angry gods! Well, let’s just say that everybody’s been angry around Gerada lately.
I’m a huge fan of the Rogues and that’s because while El Torres is using the Dungeons and Dragons world as a backdrop this is pure comedic joy. Ne’er do well duo perpetually down on their luck thieves who seem to always come out of any situation on top has been a favorite of mine since I discovered them. Yes at times it’s incredibly silly and slapstick but there’s also a damn good story revolving around all that so it’s definitely not mindless. Many a times it’s inappropriate which I adore and other times it’s tad more subdued and serious so it really does run the gamut of emotion.
This time around at the Golden Palace of Gerada it’s king has been finally blessed with an heir and because of that has dismissed his harem. Good on him for wanting to raise his son and be a good father. Only of course there’s one woman who isn’t thrilled by this and will do whatever it takes to ensure her power and influence remain intact. Gotta love a power hungry bitch who has at her disposal the means to carry out her threats, ala Game of Thrones.
So one of the King’s advisors has a plan to save the baby from Malikita and her enforcers. It entails taking the baby to people who will protect it and who aren’t associated with any of the people from the palace. This is of course Bram and Weasel’s book so they are given the baby without instruction. Malikita’s has people are as diverse as can be and she’s able to have someone scry and locate the baby.
This is the beginning of the story and how the pair will keep the baby alive and when they will learn who the boy is is anyone’s guess. I have to tell you though expect the unexpected with the characters and dialogue. There are moments that make you do a double take and laugh hysterically because it really is that wait what oh my moment. We get to see this playful whimsical side of El Torres in the writing and the characters that showcases his range as a writer.
Sure it’s a Dungeons and Dragons story but at heart is buddy comedy with some great action and adventure mixed with outrageous situations. There’s this Game of Thrones evilness in it’s conspiracy and actions and yet you still have this total Pink Panther/Don Knotts comedy involved and that he can meld the two into a story that works this well is utterly amazing.
The interior artwork is very apropos to the story. The characters look incredible and the mood, feel and emotion the give off is wonderful to see. Aside from these Brides of Battle, who are just this fun version of northern amazon warrior barbarians the baby boy throughout is so stinkin cute it’s not even funny.
When you need a break from all the darker serious angst out on the market this is what you need to be seeking. This is pure unadulterated fun and definitely not PC! Amigo has some strong titles that are certain to hit any mood you have.
