When the kids come face to face with the Deserters and their leader, they are offered a terrible choice—turn on one another, and survive, or stand together against certain death.
This is one of those books that I am not happy is a limited series. I am so going to want more of this, these characters and this art of the world. Because they were forced off the bus and evaded those Deserters were after them they ran into the house and in this new reality of the Copper Sky their lives have been forever altered. It is a fantastic story with an interesting premise and it’s beautifully told all around. This really is something I don't’ want to see end and with only two issues remaining everything is coming to a boil and the way the book is structured and how it’s paced is so well done I am always thrilled when I read this.
Opening this issue up with Amir reading the journal’s that Abraham wrote and hearing the words in your head as you read from the page is some sensational writing here. I really am extremely impressed with the way the book flows and the transitions between segments. There really is more than enough time spent on the three locations where the kids are. Amir in the house library, Ben and his sister in the basement where they ended going elsewhere and Shawn with the rest being accosted by the white haired man and what’s left of the Deserters. All three of these have time to move the story forward and further the characterisation.
There are some very interesting revelations that happen within these pages. Some are expected some aren’t but all of them have a major impact on the story and the reader. While some may be more politically geared, though really more like revenge on someone for something someone else did but then again I see as a result of Trump’s machinations so it all fits. Still this land and what’s happening on it for exceed anything that would be considered remotely normal just the reasoning for some folks to be here now.
Flaviano does some really wonderful work here. The sheer amount of creativity and imagination that is on display here is sensational. From the way that the pages are utilised so that colours bleed and there are no definite endings to the page is stunning. I like the linework here and how it’s used to really give these characters facial expressions and emotions that we read so easily read is great. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a very good solid eye for storytelling. The way backgrounds are utilised also has that effect of expanding the moment and bringing us the size and scope of everything. The colours are phenomenal as well and how they used with moments that absolutely pop and others that have a darker more sinister tone and feel to them.
This really is one of the break hits for this year. It checks off all the right boxes so that we have those highs and lows throughout that continue to make the pulse rate quicken then slow a bit before racing up again. The level of storytelling that we are getting here really is extraordinary and that I have become so invested in seeing how this plays out and that I do not want to see it end is just another testament of how well this is all put together. Boom! Puts out some of the most out there premise I have read and one that you dont think would do all that well but in reality it’s just what the doctor ordered.
