FINN HAS BEEN RESCUED FROM THE KEPLER CONSPIRACY AND IS
ONCE MORE IN THE COMPANY OF HIS FRIENDS. UNFORTUNATELY, HE'S ALSO
BEEN IMPLANTED WITH FOUR EXPLOSIVE DEVICES THAT ARE CURRENTLY WALKING
AROUND THE INSIDE OF HIS CHEST. CORRECTION---MAKE THAT THREE.
So the action picks up where we left off last issue with a car chase while while Finn is having those bombs removed. It’s exciting and looks incredibly painful I mean she’s in there with those instruments pulling these spider thingies out without any kind of anesthesia. Finn is one tough S.O.B. I’ll give him that. I’m still kind of enamoured with his look too it’s really got that great human but alien thing going on that kind of makes hot so seeing him like this here gotta like even more now.
It does take long for them regroup after rescuing Finn to start up a reaction. I kind of like that we don’t see them plan anything just that we dive right into it. We’ve already seen Jeff, this big hulking man, who is overzealous when it comes to his job disobey orders and it wouldn’t surprise me if they are going to target this guy and make sure he pays the ultimate price at some point in time. Personally I think he deserves it but that’s just me and the way that Brandon is writing his characterisation so he’s doing bang up job on that.
Now i’m kind of impressed with Juan’s work because the attention to detail he’s putting into his own style here and the use of the backgrounds here is pretty good. I think we’re seeing him grow a bit as an artist here and I like that a lot. His use or page layouts with angles and perspective are used nicely. While I’d still like to see more detail in the faces it’s not his style and i’m kind digging what he’s doing here anyway.
There’s a unique pacing to the storytelling here. We go from action scene to action scene with little clues at the end of each one that lead us to the next. Brandon isn’t delving into them and it’s leaving this kind of gap that you kind of crave to know what they see and how they come to conclusions but in the meantime you’re just enjoying what is going on.
It’s an interesting book. I’m invested and i’m not entirely sure what the heck is really going on yet. We’ve gotten glimpses of reasons and whatnot but overall as a reader i’m still in the dark and that drives me to keep coming back because I want to know. If this series is going to continue to jump from action to action and we aren’t going to get much in terms of the bigger picture than i’ll complain then. In the meantime we’re getting some nice characterisation in reactions and how they deal with the situations they are in and you get a sense of who they are. We’ve seen of their past at home and now it’s time to see how they were discovered and why they are being hunted.
Simply put there’s a real fascination that surrounds this book. It’s what keeps us coming back and leaving us with the desire for more.
