Well the book opens with Wally taking the kids to Gotham only to find that once they are there the city is enclosed by a dome and their powers are gone. So for the past year Wally and his children have been trapped in Gotham with no way out and with a wife at home he’s become obsessed with finding a way out. When suddenly a voice lights up the sky and the dome is lifted with an ominous warning and viola his powers return.
Okay so this may not really be the universe we left behind with the whole New 52 deal but it’s close enough and the fact that we are also seeing remnants of all the other Earths that we’ve come to know is just an added bonus. While i’m not seeing any real rhyme or reason here for the return of all this I’m not sure I really care because so far i’m actually enjoying see these characters again. DC on the whole has been pretty lackluster over the past year or so and yes it seems like one gimmick after another but here and now all that matters is that Wally and his children have their powers again and are back in action.
Personally I miss all the old characters and we see as Wally races around showcasing each of the fights well that on the surface seems pretty irrelevant to me as a reader. Though yay for the Freedom Fighters at least! He is trying to find a way out of all this but there isn’t one the mysterious voice who seems to have total control has decreed he fight the Amazons of Flashpoint and this race is just to prove his current course is futile.
Well this is called the Speed Force right so my real question is where are all the other speedsters? Jesse, Jay, Max Mercury, Bart or Christina not to mention the plethora of other speed related characters? Maybe that comes next issue but in all honesty I was expecting more I may not be entirely sure but just more there really wasn’t much to this other than discovering some god is out there dictating a superpowered fight club between worlds.
Best thing about this issue is that someone from one of the cities followed them and offers his help in fighting whatever it is that has done this to them. One of the most unexpected and fun things to ever happen since Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew was cancelled or that travesty when they were supposedly turned into real animals.
The Positive here
We get to see Wally and the kids again not to mention snippets of other worlds and the reemergence of Fastback.
The Negatives
Just another episode of superhero fight club without revealing any rhyme or reason as to what it’s all about. Seems pointless and without direction and there was no real story other than what feels like a set-up to a fight.
Overall this was fun for the fact that we see characters we’ve missed and the artwork is really well done but what else do you expect from Grummet and company?
