Elvis, John Henry, and the rest of the team get ready to take on a horde of vampires and an army of skeletons as they approach the house!
I have not seen the film this based off of, yet, but I will say this much this book has been utterly amazing. These misfit folks being brought together to fight supernatural problems is something I wasn’t expecting and now realise that I cannot live without it. Elvis is utterly delightful as the main man here and while I never got into him, his music or his films I do recognise his importance to history and all he brought to the world. So all that to tell you that I love Elvis here in these pages he’s everything that we know of him and so much more.
I do like the way that this is structured. The way that Joshua is able to handle the myriad of characters and their different paths in the story is nice to see. I also like the fact that Elvis won’t leave a man behind and is willing to go after Jack alone if he has to. That kind of thinking which I am sure he got from his time in the Army sets him apart from some of the others and it’s an admirable quality to possess. The characterisation throughout continues to be top notch and I am immensely impressed that it maintains it and more. The life Joshua has breathed into these characters is sensational and it makes me like them to the point where this has to be the first in a series of arcs featuring these characters.
I am totally digging John Henry too and I've seen him used here and there for various projects but I really dig how he’s being portrayed here. Swinging that hammer of his and being able to see that in all it’s glory well it makes the heart sing. If there was one thing I would ask for though it’s a previously on the inside cover and maybe a little who’s who boxes as well I mean the know the Blind Man and the Colonel but I don’t remember who Jack is or Jenny so a little bio box would be great. Big Mama is one crazy ass demon from another dimension that’s for sure and I have to say I don’t think they can kill it but drive it back to it’s home dimension for a while seems totally do.
I love Tadd’s interpretation on the interiors here. When he puts Elvis in that Jumpsuit I got chills to be honest. His imagination and creativity is marvellous and how he can bring the blob to life and show us these things being born in a pool of goo well I am completely impressed. The linework here is fantastic as well the way he’s able to manipulate the linework through it’s varying weights to create some fine attention to detail keeps getting better and better. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a solid eye for storytelling. We don’t really see a lot of backgrounds being utilised here and I am torn but ultimately I am really okay with that because of the style of the work. Ryan’s colours here are just as amazing and to see him do that black and green from Big Mama that entire page is stunning. He really makes the tone, mood and feel come alive for the reader.
Elvis leading a team of forgotten folks against everything that goes bump in the night yeah this is a complete and total winner. It is fun, quirky, smartly written and with crazy good interiors that will make anyone a fan in not time at all.
